    In my opinion, the Nutrient Paste Dispenser is the best item in all of Rimworld. Not only can it be a great tool for beginner players, intermediate and advanced Rimworld players can also benefit from its strengths!
    Not only will a nutrient paste dispenser free one of your colonists from the task of cooking, allowing you to get a lot more done early in the game -- such as researching, construction, tailoring, crafting, etc. -- but also, nutrient paste will last longer than any other source of food! If you're having trouble surviving in a more difficult biome, like ice sheet or extreme desert, a nutrient paste dispenser may just be your solution!

      I have this one colonist who used to be one of the best in combat, and had so many other great skills, until one day when she got severe brain damage when a pirate shot her in the head, so now her consciousness is capped at 50% and now she just cleans most of the time, since she can't do anything else efficiently anymore. it's tragic, but anyway. whenever she got food poisoning, it was enough to incapacitate her and I'd always have to have another colonist carry her to bed and she couldn't get up until she recovered. long story short, nutrient paste is a godsend

    You definitely have a good point when it comes to colonist efficiency in the early game, but I'll still take my pro chefs cooking fine meals over nutrient slop any day of the week. There is nothing more frustrating than colonists frequently getting break risks, and every little thing you sacrifice for the sake of efficiency puts them one step closer to the edge. Meanwhile, because the difficulty of rimworld scales with your wealth, there's nothing actually inherintly wrong with taking things slow and making sure that all of your colonists are happy, and getting constant go/shoot frenzies and inspired recruit/creativity is extremely satisfying.
    When you're doing a challenge though, or for tough early games, you make a good point.

      Before the next winter, get some indoor greenhouses built up. No more food shortages for the rest of the year, unless you lost food due to some event. Along with the idea of nutrient paste freeing up people from cooking, even just 1 vegetable growing on a farm will free up your hunter(s) and gatherer(s) from doing this...or additionally, frees you up from having to select plants and animals to be hunted/gathered (assuming you don't have other mods that do this for you).

    If you set up your stock piles correctly, a cook will spend very little time making food. Here's how to set it up. Look at your number pad, if the stove is occupying 789 then the cook will stand (sit put a chair there) at 5. Your vegetable stock pile would go on 4 and 1, while meat would go 6 and 3. Critical prioritize those for haulers to keep filled. Put a stool in 4163 and maybe 5 if you can't put a better quality chair there (the 5 slot is least important). With the stools in the stock pile, the cook won't budge a smegging inch when making food. Set him to take the food to the nearest stockpile (5 and 2 on minimum priority so he drops it on the ground, but it counts as made for keeping x meals in stock). The haulers will bring raw food to the cook and haul meals back to the freezer.
    Yes, you deal with food poisoning, but this can be almost completely eliminated on even a skill 1 cook by having him clean before cooking (set cleaning as a lower number than cooking in management page). Early on, just use vegetable stock piles and make simple meals. Convert one side to meat as needed.
    The whole trick to making meals efficient is in the stock piles with stools so the pawn doesn't move when cooking and cleanliness of the food prep area. Even a low skill cook with a hauler can make enough food for a large colony to eat for the next month easily with 1 day of work and you don't get the -4 mood for nutrient paste which I love using to feed animals and prisoners for most of the reasons you list, especially the mystery meat. Animals won't care and screw the prisoners. This is a great way of corpse disposal if your cook is a psychopath or cannibal, or you put some flowers around to counter the butchered human debuff and a great source of human leather for very nice clothes for a mood buff for the colonists. Weird that they don't like butchering or eating people, but they love wearing them...

    • @Nathankinamorh
      @Nathankinamorh 5 лет назад +3

      You wrote all that and the dispenser is just.
      Power it, fill hopper, food forever.
      Until one has a dedicated cook with passion and +6 skill. The paste dispenser is absolutely vital in saving initial work time. Especially when running on harder difficulties when defense from raiders really matter.

    • @skavies2351
      @skavies2351 5 лет назад +2

      @@Nathankinamorh I have no clue what you mean by raider defense unless you are talking about food poisoning. Food poisoning is much less about the cook's skill than it is about how clean the environment is. A high skill cook will negate the chance of food poisoning if you are cooking in a very dirty place, but if you keep it very clean, the base chance is so low you don't need skill to be reasonably safe. As an added benefit, your pawns won't be getting dirty environment mood penalties. Get cooking before the first raid, and even a skill 1 no passion will be outside the food poisoning range for a clean kitchen before raid 2. The first 2 raids are pretty well set scripted events that are very predictable even with Randy on extreme.
      Oh, and something even most "pros" at this forget is to not let a low level cook butcher then cook without forcing them to clean up between butchering and cooking even if they do use proper clean kitchen/storage tactics and the stock piles.
      Clean Kitchen tactics:
      1. No hunting while the cook is working, they will track in dirt to the freezer/food storage area making a mess. (no pawns in or out of the kitchen/freezer area)
      2. If you can, lock out the other colonists so they don't enter the freezer or kitchen while the cook is working. If you want to make a lot of meals, lock the hauler in with the cook, no one in or out of the kitchen while cooking.
      3. Put the stove in the dam freezer early on., It makes keeping the important things clean much easier, and the speed penalty for cold environment is not that bad until you are trying to feed 20+ colonists, but by then your cook can make safe food in the basement of an outhouse.
      4. Floor the freezer (and kitchen and every space between them if you ignored #3) before you cook anything.

    • keep your kitchen cool and place 2 stronage zones right next to your stove. One where the cook stands and one right beside it. Set one only to corn and the other only to meat.
    If done right, the cook now has to walk 0 tiles. Set your cooking bill to dropping the food right there and not haul it to a zone.

If you utilize troops that fall into those categories, big reccomends for these. I actually had no idea about the freezer/wall/hopper ideal setup, so this vid was super helpful. Many thanks for that.
    I will also add that in the late game, this becomes much more of a last resort kind of option; colonists that feel they are owed all the fine things in life will struggle with this food method a lot more. The debuff doesnt actually get worse, its just harder to manage since the colonist is so damn needy.

    Here's a hint as to WHY nutrient paste is considered an "awful meal" by most colonists: in the game "Tropico 2: Pirate Cove", nutrient paste has another name: slop. Slop is what you feed to your working captives, and it's both made and served in a chuck tent. HOWEVER, that -4 "Had an Awful Meal" moodlet can be more than offset if your colonists have the Cannibal trait, and you add human meat as a component of your nutrient paste. That's because nutrient paste containing human meat will give cannibals a +15 "Cooked Cannibalism" moodlet. So that makes for a net mood increase of +11!

    1:47 You only need a 4x4 stockpile for the meat and a 2x4 for your meals. Maybe a temporary freezer of 6x6 to use ONLY when there is a huge influx of meat, more likely, an animal corpse storage as many animals take more space in bits than in one piece... THEN, you need to look at how much time your cook vs how long it take to cook a meal, THEN take your observations in count and descide to put a 2x2 meat stack next to your cook so as you can have him be very effective. Same for vegetables... Now you will have simple meals or fine meals: simple meals require almost no work and are almost instant to cook. A little bit of time vs no mood penalities at all. Then you have the fine mean... for this one, you will, indeed, need a 70% cook for your colony size as show at 1:47. BUT, you will get a huge mood bonus. :-)
    And even if he dies, you can at worst replace it by a nitriment dispencer while you clean up the mess unti you are stable enough to invest in a new cook.
    2:20 You only need a lvl 3 cook and a clean room to start this without problems. Don't put the butcher in a travel area, make sure the path to it many clean tiles. A little bit of woor and concrete does the trick. if large enough, you can store your vegies in the kitchen too. Kitchens are like bedroom: They should not be a place for transit.

    food poisoning happens with a one tile cooking space, there is just too much traffic, too much dirt to clean.
    Also in terms of feeding a colony, you need one chef in that 6 colony number, so you actually have 5 active colonists vs 10. (some spare time, but cleaning limits it)

    With the mod Researchable Stat Upgrades you can research Increases for your Dispenser
    1000 research points to lower the food used by 33&, bringing it down to 4.
    And a late game research that will change the mood debuff from -4 to -2

  • @treyfolkmen7942
    @treyfolkmen7942 5 лет назад

    Actually you can remove debuff from human and insect nutrient paste. For this you need to drop paste on hopper by drafting colonist, hauling said paste, when he passes hopper. Then forbid it. You will get nutrient paste made from nutrient paste without debuff :)

    Still not sold on the concept - as cool as it sounds. I prefer to sacrifice a day of a cook's life to stockpile weeks worth of meals, never had an issue with the guy being busy all day every day - it's all about efficient cooking, i.e. with well positioned stockpiles around the stove or with fridges if you got the mod so they're not running about all the time.
    Admittedly, without anyone having a decent skill in cooking, risking poisoning or not even being bale to get fine meals, nutrient paste is the best option. (then again, there's also pemmican, aye? ^^)

    Starting as a tribe, do you think the nutrient paste dispenser is worth the research? By the time you actually have access to it, most if not all your food problems thus far have been eliminated (or you died). So it is no longer an early game boost. So far I have been making pemmican as a food reserve for my tribal colonies and that worked fairly well, but it requires lots and lots of cooking.

    To be honest, as long as you have a cook, you can easily mass fine meals early game with no issue. I used to love the dispenser, but now I realize just how pointless making one is (other than for prisoners - it's a must have if you're making a prison)

    • @RawkL0bster
      @RawkL0bster 3 года назад

      In terms of pure mathematics, it's still the best when looking at it in a utilitarian way. 100% reduction in food poisoning and the best way to stretch out your meals per raw ingredient is far from useless, your colonists will just hate it when compared to a fine meal.

    • @jabbathetrump187
      @jabbathetrump187 3 года назад

      @@RawkL0bsterI have a cook with 10 cooking skill. The kitchen was a an electrical oven in a 2x3 steria floor room. Not once have I gotten food poisoning from his meals. While nutrient meals are more efficient, the mood penalty isn't worth it unless your colony is extremely happy, at which point you should already have a farm to sustain your colonists. It's, in my opinion, only useful in emergencies / prisons

    Ok long story short I get greedy and a raid showed up that killed 90% of my people and forced the remaining people to find a new home. They did but only 3 survived the journey. Winter was hard on us and we were always on the edge of starving because our cook was too slow. The paste machine helped us alot.

  • @Maddog3060
    @Maddog3060 5 лет назад

    ....eeeeehhh. I might try it once, but that size takes up a bit more space than I like. I know it's about the same for a small kitchen but at least I can just use a wood-fueled stove for that and don't have to worry about making meals when solar flares hit. The bigger bottleneck I've found is growing enough food to keep the larder stocked. Damn cold snaps and animals, man. Once I get past that kind of problem I usually have several colonists who can cook and autodoors work wonders in reducing the time it takes to transfer food from the freezer.

    Any mod maker gonna make a mod out of Nutrient Paste Dispenser btw? I kinda feel it needs more attention and it should go like this.
    Hoppers connected.....Ingredients used...................Buff........................................Debuff.......
    1 6, vanilla? Healthy, +1 mood, 1% all stats vanilla debuff -10%
    2 3-3 Healthy, +2 mood , 2% all stats vanilla debuff
    -20%
    3 2-2-2 Healthy, +3 mood, 3% all stats vanilla debuff
    -40%
    4 2-2-1-1 Healthy, +4 mood, 4% all stats vanilla debuff
    -60%
    5 2-1-1-1-1 Healthy, +5 mood, 5% all stats vanilla debuff
    -80%
    6 1-1-1-1-1-1 Healthy, +6 mood, 6% all stats No more ate awful meal
    7 1 from all hopper Super Healthy, +10 mood, 10% all stats
    So on and so forth until max hopper connected is achieved. Please give Nutrient Paste Dispenser the love it deserves.
    Also, to build a Nutrient Paste Dispenser, it will use 20x more resources with this mod, if ever it got made and why? Cooks revolted all around the world for taking their jobs away. 20 is the max cooking skill so yeah, 20x more to build the NPD.
    Pawns with burning passion and 10+ on cooking skill will have a debuff of "I lost my job to a machine", -5 mood. And pawns with passion to cooking will have a buff of "I dont need to cook anymore", +5 mood, why? Coz they rather spend their time shooting boomrats and see it explode than cook 24/7.
    Oh and it should be 20x harder to destroy as well. That resource aint easy to find yo.
