Yesterday my husband and I were talking about buying a smaller table. When I opened up Facebook, I had ads from 5 companies for exactly the same size table we’d agreed on. That’s just creepy.
I am guilty of clicking on targeted ads on occasion -- sometimes actually making a purchase. But I still believe that, for someone with discipline, we're less likely to shop impulsively via the internet than strolling through a shopping mall, where you've already invested in the trip, the time, the gas, etc. Most of the targeted ads I see are for things so closely related to what I've already purchased that I'm unlikely to purchase another version of the same item, like, the next day. It's true we're bombarded with online ads but in the old days, we'd often pore over magazine ads with lots and lots of copy and truly immerse ourselves in the product in a way we don't anymore (most of us anyway). I think the more online ads we see the better we become at just tuning it out. It becomes our everyday landscape: we stop paying attention. Great video as always!
My bank asked in a survey how much I spend on subscription services. The lowest amount I could choose from the multiple choice list was $10,000. Royal Bank, go home, you're drunk.
I don't even know how that would be possible. Even if someone subscribed to all the popular services, it shouldn't be that much. I only pay about $200 a year for Microsoft and Hulu. Maybe they included other services like utilities.
Good points. The advertisement is really aggravating. I'm quickly becoming numb to it...admittedly I have made purchases that I really didn't need as I was drawn in but fool me once and I learn! I keep a running list of needs for home projects. All projects, no matter when they get done...nothing gets purchased until i find that magic price I want to pay for the precise item I need. With the grocery prices now, I've learned I can wait, I can substitute or I can do without by changing strategy. I'm newly retired with a fixed income...some wiggle room which I wiggle only after sincere consideration. I in no way consider my situation confining...it encourages me to be smarter. My home operates very well with no television, no cable, no internet accept on cellphone, no paid apps or subscriptions, no paid services offered by stores.
Managing money is different from accumulating wealth, and the lack of investment education in schools may explain why people struggle to maintain their financial gains. The examples you provided are relevant, and I personally benefited from the market crisis, as I embrace challenging times while others tend to avoid them. Well, at least my advisor does too, jokingly.
Investors should exercise caution with their exposure and exercise caution when considering new investments, particularly during periods of inflation. It is advisable to seek guidance from a professional or trusted advisor in order to navigate this recession and achieve potential high yields.
Due to my demanding job, I lack the time to thoroughly assess my investments and analyze individual stocks. Consequently, for the past seven years, I have enlisted the services of a fiduciary who actively manages my portfolio to adapt to the current market conditions. This strategy has allowed me to navigate the financial landscape successfully, making informed decisions on when to buy and sell. Perhaps you should consider a similar approach.
this is definitely considerable! think you could suggest any professional/advisors i can get on the phone with? i'm in dire need of proper portfolio allocation
Well, there are a few out there who know what they are doing. I tried a few in the past years, but I’ve been with Melissa Terri Swayne for the last five years or so, and her returns have been pretty much amazing.
Appreciate this recommendation, hopefully I can get some insight to where the market is headed and strategies to beat the downtrend with when I hear back from Melissa.
AUSTIN-- YOUR APPROACH IS ALWAYS SO IDIOSYNCRATIC AND FRESH. THAT'S WHY YOU'RE SO TRUSTABLE (EXCEPT YOUR BUYING INTO THE ORTHODOX FINANCIAL SYSTEM-- ETFS, ETC.).
I totally agree that targeted advertising is a problem (and lack of discipline coupled with easy access to credit). I DO leave reviews on Amazon occasionally - they aren't all fake. 🙂 Even Amazon uses scarcity tactics - that I've fallen for more than once. Ugh!
Excellent video, I have fallen for the review aspect to where I might buy a product over the other but really not spending more because it was something I was looking for. The scary one is they spying manipulation, Im sure almost everyone has had a conversation with someone and a product is mentioned and next thing you know your getting ads for it.
Austin I just joined and want to say if you avoid living in the city, you should be able to save a TON Of $ by growing your food in one of those cheap Georgia towns.. Get a job for cash if needed, your RUclips income is above board so you're okay. If not, keep watching growing videos on RUclips. I finally feel like I know how to grow most things seeings that we have compost now broken down. I don't want to spend money trying to grow stuff unless it's cheap like carrots (50% sand/50% homemade compost) garlic, ginger, turmeric, yellow squash, pole beans, strawberries and elderberries. We've saved a good amount of money so far. Good luck to you.
Huuum, you are advertising your thoughts...I saw the heart with the money sing...people like your opinion and here comes the boom!!!let me give this guy some money to support his channel. Thank you for your teaching I get it now....😊
Thank you for the video. I found the pain/pleasure conundrum you briefly mentioned towards the end (the need to clear dopamine overload) especially thought-provoking. Considering ideas of how I could clear dopamine overload, I suppose that could be achieved by focusing on "the most important things in life" ("the simple things"). The things that money cannot buy.
I used to spend a lot on buying things I didn’t need and on subscriptions, RUclips, RUclips music, Netflix, peacock and maybe a couple others but I stopped spending money on useless things and canceled all subscriptions accept RUclips music and canceled the RUclips one as well and it felt great and saved a lot but after a while I couldn’t deal with all the advertising from brands and the fake reviews and 400 dollar hauls from people pretending to like stuff from SHEIN and temp and I deleted TikTok, Facebook and Instagram and it feels great not being bombarded by a bunch of garbage.
There is a certain grocery store in my area. When I go there, no matter how stuffed my stomach is, I almost always get hungry. Maybe it's time for earplugs.
Austin you have more furniture than me and I have only been at my place for 4 years. I have plastic storage shelves for furniture!!! lol I don’t even have furniture I got a couch, computer chair, small dinning table, a chair for it and a twin bed.
Yes, I have paid the $99.95 per year Microsoft Office subscription since 2017. That is like $735 spent on it along with tax. However, it's something I do use although I don't use it often.
I buy products that fit into certain categories...makeup...animals cannot be harmed in their creation...food...few to no hormones (meat is greatly limited), sugar is greatly limited, more fiber than non fiber...animal products...limited additional chemicals (my dog has allergies galore). Go ahead...sell away, but fit into these categories. Never again. I know what I'm getting from Amazon and it will be here tomorrow.
In India, we now have sports betting in the form of DREAM 11 , RUMMY CIRCLE etc apps . They are spreading like forest fire and wasting the precious time n money of young Indians.😢 Thanks Austin, for such a nice video. Love ❤from India.
Once a year I subscribe netflix for a month at Christmas holidays. It is then at a reduced price (or not). My own Christmas gift. And that's it. Greetings from the Netherlands.
The people behind these advertising schemes are mostly all trained in our universities to learn to become as psychologically and behaviorally manipulative as possible. End goal, get you to buy shit you never wanted. Anytime you are about to buy something, ask yourself, "do I actually want this or is this desire coming from external forces" AKA marketing majors set on getting you to spend.
The market took a big dive before April, 2020 that hasn't been seen since 2009,The key to financial stability is having the right investment suggestions for a diverse portfolio.
Where did you invest? I'm just trying to learn where or how do I begin so I can start the journey of compound interest. I am 24 and have saved some money, I just do not know clearly where everyone seems to know to put their money. It just says S&P 500 but I don't understand what that means
I'm 33 just got out of debt I might be behind compared to my peers I'm not happy but satisfied that I’m debt free only want to focus on investing I would appreciate if you recommend your advisor for the right knowledge.
You know her too ? I'm also a proud beneficiary of her superb platform. There are the biggest custodians. after this I also would not be asking investing advice in the RUclips comments. 80% are scammers.
I don`t understand why you have mentioned Temu and Shein but not Amazon? What is the difference between them? You criticized Temu because it is Chinese company but not Amazon because it is American? Amazon is the worst thing pushing us to buy a lot of crap ( probably from the same factories in China ) with just one click. One touch - this is what you need to buy something. No friction between the thought and the action. Very manipulative system. And, from what I know, the conditions of Amazon workers are not great either. You should be fair and talk about Amazon too.
@ 3:06.....why is the lady sitting on the toilet doing her business wth her pants all the way up? How is she pooping that way? This is false advertising.
I do not think he was trying to be funny or applying this to himself. I hear people texting on their phone clued to the loo at work and in public places, chill out Karen.
I do. It's boring in there while I wait for nature to do its stuff. I got licensed to pick and sell wild mushrooms based on videos I watched on the loo on RUclips. Don't knock it til you've tried it!

I really wanted something but I held off because I didn’t need it. It was hard because I was being tempted with $0 percent financing for 24 months.

The worst part of sports betting is how the leagues themselves embraced it.
