this is my favorite dkc song!!! you did it so much justice!!! and i've listened to "tonight's a jazzy night" so much that i can very clearly here the inspiration and instruments taken...good job!!
Once I heard the second loop started, I was like wait this sounds familiar. I checked the description and there it is. I love Tom's arrangement and it sounds SO damn good on this!
Oh man, if you werent already at the top of my list of, "favorite youtube YM2612 composers" this would have assuredly put you there. Alas, I cannot raise you any higher than you already are- you absolute King of FM Synthesis. P.S: I'd love to hear your take on either Mining Melancholy or Forest Interlude!
I'm back! I'm doing a 365 Days of Music Challenge, and I ended up picking this for Day 349. I like to do little writeups for each of the entries, so here's this one's: **Day 349:** "Snakey Chantey (YM2612 + SN76489 Arrangement)" This will probably be the last chiptune I select for the year. Which is really wild to think about. We really do be in the homestretch now. I've been a fan of David Wise's work for a long time; he's got one of the most distinctive sounds of any game composer out there. That said, to tell you the truth, I'm not super familiar with "Snakey Chantey." I know it's kind of an "alternate take" of "Gangplank Galleon" without the intense bit. And boy, lemme tell you, I'm glad that it exists. Sometimes melodies deserve a second go-round to get the most out of its melody. This jaunty John Tay arrangement is heavily based off of Tom Brier's performance, which is also worth checking out (in my opinion, mandatory viewing material if you enjoyed this version). John Tay sort of fashions a "meeting-in-the-middle" scenario here -- he maintains much of DKC's sound and energy while keeping that ragtime and improvisational fun present in Brier's take. It's one thing to do this on piano, but it's something else entirely to sequence this note-by-note. The fact John Tay not only did this but also did it so marvelously is a testament to his talent. And he's so young, yet! Easily the Jake Kaufman of his generation, imo. There's so much to talk about here. The start hearkens back to the sound of "Gangplank Galleon," but the added pad and trills and the harmonies in the lead make it sound so fresh and new. I've talked about how I love that feeling of revisiting a theme and staying faithful while polishing it up, and we get just a little taste of that here before Tay totally changes the tone. It's almost impossible for me to sit still when the ragtime hits. By 0:36, it gets even *harder*. The drums and pitch-bent instruments do so much for this arrangement. The little touches are everything. Like the bit with the pipes at 1:24. So airy and nostalgic. Easily one of my favorite chiptunes now.
The Tom Brier part is amazing. But can we talk about that opening? The stellar use of pads and harmonies? Goosebumps. Kinda wanna see more Tom Brier arrangements from you now
i want you to know that this specific version of this track is what played in my head when i got prescribed estradiol pills and testosterone blockers today
If this is laziness, I don't think I'll be ready for you going all out. This is a ton of fun to listen to.
My man really said "I'm partial to doing it in the key of A-Minor, myself!"
THE SOUND DESIGN OF THIS IS AMAZING
This song makes me happy

Also - is it me or do your furnace uploads sound "less louder" than the ones you used to do before? As in, the volume seems down?
oh yeah volume mixing improvements were made
@@johntayjinf i remember some your old works were just all channels blasting at max volume
*dances my gay little jig*
based
I’m not knowledge in the slightest on Genesis sound hardware, so I was just curious: are your tracks possible on real hardware?
Yes, as John is using furnace tracker
@@olifloof holy shit, that’s insane how hardware from 1989 can pump this out.
Do I hear some Tom Brier in there? Or am I just hallucinating.
