In some ways, he is a "master of masters", quite peerless, with great respect to other tabla masters. Of course, it is also because of his lineage, experience and the fact that he has been continuously associated with music and the tabla since birth. Pedigree apart, he is a once in a generation talent.
In terms of other ways to describe him, the word "doyen" would be apt.
Doyen: the most respected or prominent person in a particular field.

    About the Tabla :
Those vertical bands make no noise. They are leather bands pulling down the leather surface on top. The surface on top is made of 3 ( technically 2 ) layers forming 3 rings. Each ring makes different pitched sound. The 3 rings is same on both the drums but the bigger one makes more base like sounds while the thin one makes more high pitch sounds.... On which ring you hit your index finger ( for thinner drum ) or the middle/index finger ( for the bigger drum ) decides what sound is made. And a combination of both drums makes the total sound you hear
    About Pt. Zakir Hussain:
He is a legend ( His name is preceded with Ustad meaning someone at the Sumit of their talent. ). The banging he did at the end might seem “just banging” but only someone at his level can do this and make it look so easy. He lives in SanFrancisco, California by the way.

  • @ni2says

The story of Ustad Zakir Hussain goes like this: When he was born and the maulawi asked his father Lt. Ustad Alla Rakha Khan (who himself was an accomplished Tabla player) to spell azaan(Islamic prayer) in the infants ears, he read the first four rhythmic syllables instead of azaan. When everyone got shocked and asked his father why he did that, he said that "My son will also do the same thing which I did and will take it to a new level". Which indeed he did and became a cultural icon. Now tabla means Ustad Zakir Hussain, they both have became synonymous to each other.

    Geeks-a-Musing,
Those leather straps running on the sides of the drums are there to tighten the skin drum-heads. They themselves don't make any noticeable sounds. You saw the pinky hanging over because he was moving his whole hand over so that his index finger would be centered when he snapped it against the center of the drum-head (inside the center of the black circle) to create that high pitched twanging sound.

If this is the first time that you watched a performance of Zakir Hussain, be preparad that this is only the beginning. I have watched countless of his performances over the years and whenever you think it's not humanly possible to get any better, you find another solo where he is even more powerful, complex and virtuous. There seem to be no limits to this man. If you can think it, he can play it. He might well be the most manually gifted instrumentalist in music history.

@6:30 the sound is phonetically denoted by “Tun”. It is an open sound created by striking and bouncing off the index finger on the black part of the tabala (the smaller one on the right hand. The left hand drum is called Baaiyaan). If the same open note is played closed by not bouncing the finger off, it creates a heavy muted sound noted as “ra” or “tak” depending on which type of notation string it falls in. For instance: “tiRAkita” are group of four notes counted into a single count and RA, contributes to the muted sound from the index finger. If played independently is generally called “tak”. There are other variations of it too at advanced levels.
The strings create no musical note per say, and are only used to create sufficient tension on the skin to tune the Tabla.

    FYI,
The side bands are only used to stretch the Tabla Percussion Surface. He is not even touching the band. There is a thin ring like covering between the Band and Percussion Surface of Tabla that makes the sound resonate at higher notes. The smaller drum is called as 'Tabla' that creates high pitched sounds and the bigger one is called as 'Dagga' which creates Bass Sound.

Tabla instrument has two drums - the one he plays using his right hand is called Tabla and one with the left is called Dagga... When you hit on different parts of Tabla you'll hear different sounds - that's how he was able to add those different pitches. Dagga is used for the "boing boing" sounds that Nathan was talking about. The rhythm he played was a 16 beat rhythm called Treetal and he showed different variations and speeds for that same rhythm Treetal throughout this video

  • @statusquoreject
    @statusquoreject 3 года назад

nice vid. it was entertaining watching your reactions & comments, the expressions of lady in the back were awesome.
I play tabla here's some info in case it helps... On tabla all notes are played on top of the drums and by using the finger tips & by modulating wrist & palm pressure. His fingers are actually moving incredibly fast... Like ridiculously fast! Zakir set some world record for strokes per second a while back. It's the perpetual motion of his fingers moving so fast that makes it look like they're moving slow. Like how a cars wheels will look like they're slowing down as they spin faster.
The black rings are made from ink dye and the vertical bands are pulling down tight on a skin/hide that's stretched over the top of each drum. The small drum can be considered the treble while the big drum is the base.
You get different pitches & tones by where you hit the rings & in-between the rings on top of the tabla, how much pressure you apply, and by how long you let the skin vibrate after the strikes - if at all. It takes a lot of finger strength to hit the drum as loud as he plays and to get the sounds he's getting. Sometimes his fingers are hitting the tabla skins with close to the force of what a drumstick would hit a conventional drum.
It's Indian classical music which doesn't have any sheet music, the notes are spoken out and sung in rhythm. When he sounds like he's 'scatting' into the mic he's actually singing/reciting the notes & rhythm he's about to play. In the vid he said the inspiration for the rhythm of one of the pieces was how it sounds when a horse runs.
This guy is the son of one of the greatest tabla players in history who played with Ravi Shankar, who is another amazing musician who influenced people like George Harrison and the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. You should do a reaction video to Ravi Shankar and see what his fingers can do with the strings.

Those bands arr used only to stretch the fabric on top and have no musical role.
The top of the Tabla emits different frequencies from different locations, which also needs different strokes of the finger or base of the palm (the deep base sound you were mentioning). So, if he hit the same part of the top with the flat of his fingers, he got a "tap" sound and if he curled his fingers and hit the same spot with the tip of his finger, he got a "Tung" sound. Same spot!!!
That pinky was tapping the very edge of the top of the drum and NOT plucking the string, for that metallic sound.
He was simulating a Horse sound.
