  • Hi, guys! It took me hours and hours to film and edit this video but it is finally ready! It's long, but if you enjoy vintage copies and illustrations you will probably like it. As some of you already know, last year I started collecting illustrated copies of Jane Eyre. I really wanted to do a video that could be used in the future as reference to other people starting their own collections.

    Collecting vintage books while living in Brazil is definitely a challenge, but I ended up finding some nice copies and I’m still waiting for five books to arrive (hopefully...)
    BTW, there is this website that helps a lot if you want to start your own Jane Eyre collection: janeeyreillustrated.com/. The Etsy store is also great.

    Jane Eyre is a wonderful collection to have! My top favorites were the 1984 - The Readers Digest Association edition (Illustrated by Richard Levenson) and the 1974 - Heritage Press
    edition (Illustrated by Barnett Freedman) with that blood red cover! Thank you so much for sharing :)

    Thank you for this beautiful display of different artists' responses to this wonderful book, one of my favourite novels, though I'm no great reader of fiction. My copy is an old-fashioned Penguin, one with the wide orange and white horizontal stripes, circa 1960, no illustrations at all. It's a lovely idea to present such a huge range like this. As I looked it occurred to me what a beautiful exhibition these books would make spread out as in a museum. Some of the types used were very beautiful, too. How many different versions of the novel do you own now? It must be quite a number!

      Thank you! It's really hard to find these copies because many sellers don't ship to Brazil... But it's really exciting to see the collection growing :)

    Wow...such gorgeous illustrations! The 1980s Folio one is a bit too small, but still pretty...

    Every time I thought that I'd seen the best illustrations you whisked out another one. :D Have to say, excluding the Folio Society edition, all the ones from the 80's really appeal to me. And I always get a bit envious when I see those really detailed woodgravings. I could not accomplish that. :D
    Now you need one of those table glass cases, that they use in museums, to put all the really fancy ones in. :D

    • @BookCravings
      @BookCravings  6 лет назад +1

      I'm glad you liked it! It would be nice to have those table glass cases, but I doubt my husband would enjoy another furniture dedicated to books in the house LOL. But in the future I will have to come up with a solution, because the 1800 copies are really fragile...

      :D Maybe he could start charging people to come view your collection. Then the case would pay itself back in no time.

    I sense an obsession! I'm just finishing up the 1943 Random House "Wuthering Heights", with the matching copy of Jane Eyre next in the queue. Looking forward to it. It looks like your copy is in great condition.

    • @BookCravings
      @BookCravings  3 года назад +2

      Ubiquitous Books I absolutely love JE but I must advise you that it’s almost consensus that Wuthering Heights is a superior novel and Emily Bronte is a superior author... although I disagree. I find Wuthering Heights a bit annoying lol

    • @UbiquitousBooks
      @UbiquitousBooks 3 года назад

      @@BookCravings having gotten 80% through Wuthering Heights, I can see why you might say so. I have high hopes for Jane Eyre though.

    • @UbiquitousBooks
      @UbiquitousBooks 3 года назад +1

      @@BookCravings Now that I read both and have had a few days to reflect, I think I am in agreement that Jane Eyre is the better novel. I found it a bit slow-paced in places, but the development of characters is much more mature than Wuthering Heights (which felt far too contrived to me in its second half). Jane Eyre is also incredibly powerful in places. That chapter where Jane flees Thornfield and is wandering destitute-wow!

    • @BookCravings
      @BookCravings  3 года назад

      Ubiquitous Books oh that chapter is really good! But I must say that after that amazing description of her desperation the book goes downhill... the last part is my less favorite. The beginning of the book is what seals the deal to me... her childhood in that institution is what made me love the book and the character.

    Great collection! Your editions contain so many beautiful illustrations. I have the Folio Society Simon Brett edition. I especially like the satin like cover. Although I really like wood engravings, I was somewhat disappointed with the size of most of them in this Folio Society edition. Thanks for sharing!

    • @BookCravings

      Thank you! I totally agree about the size of the illustrations. They are pretty, but it's difficult to see all the details because they are so tiny...

    My favorite is the 1911 edition by G.Bell & Sons. There seem to be a rather lot of illustrations, Is that right? And they are both in color and black and white, making for a very rich enhancement to the text. Somehow these pictures feel right for the story to me ... that is.... seem to capture the spirit well. I would have loved having them in the edition I read, so many years ago now. Needless to say all your books are wonderful. Thanks for this totally delightful excursion through your Jane Eyre collection. I'm very glad I've found your channel! I always enjoy your videos.

    Great video and those are beautiful edition! Jane Eyre is my most favorite book of all time and I collect them too! I have 9 different editions, ranging between 1930's to now... I want to get some copies from the 1800's but they are hard to find and not cheap. I found a 1847 edition on Etsy a few months ago but it was sold before I could get it. I have a Booktube channel of my own and I have been wanting to film a video on all of my Jane Eyre books, but I won't do that until I get to 10. I've subscribed to your channel too!!!

    Wow, what an impressive collection! Super cool to see the range of different interpretations, art styles and eras. Do you have a favorite edition among these? The effort you took to make this definitely paid off, it's a very beautiful and comprehensive video. :)

    • @BookCravings
      @BookCravings  6 лет назад

      Thank you, Laura! I really don't have a favorite.... I enjoy all of them. My least favorite is the comic book, which is quite tacky lol, and the manga adaptation has it's problems, but all the actual books have lovely illustrations, as you said, it's really interesting to notice how each artist have interpreted the scenes. Maybe I'll do a top 5 of individual illustrations, because some of them have caught my eye more then others. ;)

    Jane Eyre is my all time favorite book! Which edition was your favorite?

  • @ShawnBirss
    @ShawnBirss 6 лет назад +1

    I *really* liked that Heritage Press edition. Very pretty.
    Are the pink spines on the 90s Folio edition meant to look like that? Or are they sunned? I like how they look. But it is very unusual. The fabric is very pretty.
    What do you think of Readers Digest edition books?

    • @BookCravings
      @BookCravings  6 лет назад +1

      I was quite impressed by the Heritage Press copy when I got it last year. It's definitely one of my favorites.
      The FS edition looks like that originally. It's bound in a kind of pale pink silk cloth. But I wish the illustrations were bigger.
      The Readers Digest copy was another good surprise. It looks old fashion but it is well made.

      I do like it! It's my favorite book. I love everything about it, even it's flaws. Jane is a character that speaks to me...
      I don't really have a favorite so far. I guess that the big contender will be a book I got online in June/17 but I don't know what happened to it (maybe I'll have to buy another copy :/). The name of the illustrator is Dame Darcy and I'm so curious to see how the story was illustrated by her unique style. Fingers crossed. Sometimes it takes 6 months for a order to arrive here, can you believe it?

    • @Herodollus

      Wow that sucks. Wait how does it take 6 months? It takes like 20 ish days if even that to order from north america to Scandi. You must be able to track the package somehow? If it's gone, i feel your burden sister, that really sucks of whoever the hell screwed up and lost it

      Brazilian customs is an unpredictable black hole. It slows the entire process. Sometimes I know when the order have arrived in Brazil, but as soon as it goes through customs I just don't know when they will release the parcel. It could take months... :(
