I really hope they bring in Mr Freeze later on. Him and Bane are my favorite villains. Very curious to see how they do the Joker. The shots in this movie are beautiful. I agree with this, the first half was incredible! The scene with the guy who had that riddler trap on his head was fantastic and the car chase was so epic that I think it set the bar too high for all future action sequences. Honestly every scene in the first half of the movie was so so so good. Then the movie kinda lost me and it felt like a lot of filler was going on. I also found the climax and Riddlers overall motive and plan kinda disappointing. I was expecting some big final confrontation in like a building rigged with loads of traps and a bunch of hostages in danger that batman has to save with Riddler taunting him over the PA system or something. Instead he gets himself arrested and then the climax is just explosions and guys with guns. It also didn't make sense to me why he let himself be arrested. Why not have one of his followers shoot Falcone? I dunno... I really did love the first half of the film so so much but the second half and overall length let it down for me.

    • @uhuhuh1966
      @uhuhuh1966 2 года назад +6

      @@peskyspider5103 it wasn’t just explosions & guys with guns the entire city was submerged underwater it was Gotham’s Katrina lol that’s pretty horrifying and epic, and that flare scene of Batman actually saving people was so powerful and a rare moment to see in modern day superhero film. Even in the Nolan films I didn’t see him get down and dirty to help victims like that. I’m not saying your opinion is wrong, of course like what you like, but just don’t think that specific aspect should go ignored. I was in New Orleans when Katrina hit, & I would’ve loved to have seen some hope like that

      @peskyspider5103 2 года назад +2

      @@uhuhuh1966 I mean I was kinda including the flood as part of the explosions because they are what caused it. I put it in the destruction category the same as Joker blowing up the hospital and Bane blowing up the football stadium. Doesn't really matter that it's water causing the damage this time. I wanted something a bit different from Riddler but they just fell back into old tropes. The scene with the hostage in the trap having to solve riddles from earlier in the film was much more exciting and tense. I wanted more scenes like that. But I seem to clearly be in the minority here.

    I love everything about this movie! I really can’t pick out a single problem from it. None of the actors outshined one another. They were all perfect in their roles. Battinson was brutal and psychologically torn, Paul Dano was downright scary as the Riddler, Zoe Kravitz was electrifying as Catwoman, John Turturro was eerie as Falcone, Colin Farrell is hilarious as the Penguin and Jeffrey Wright is tied with Gary Oldman as my favorite portrayal of Gordon. The opening is the scariest moment to any comic book movie, and its usage of Ave Maria was the cherry on top! Michael Giacchino’s score is haunting and mesmerizing, and it’s one of the most memorable scores for a Batman movie. The Batman is a comic book film that rightfully deserves to be called a masterpiece! 10/10

      I don't necessarily disagree with all of this, but even after a first watch there some things that stood out as needing improvement. I really didn't like the pacing of the 3rd act after Ridler is apprehended, and his whole plan of drowning Gotham didn't make sense for his character. The Ridler only killed or hurt people that he thought deserved it. The whole drowning Gotham plan caused damage to all the citizens. That whole sequence felt like they needed an action set piece and so they just threw something in. It literally happened out of nowhere and was not set up at all. Secondly, I don't think they developed Catwoman well enough. At first we see some sort of connection to the Russian girl, but she gets killed off and it isn't developed. I didn't really care about that whole storyline. Carmine Falcone being her father was more interesting, but that is only revealed later.

  • @superzayman1

    You should watch Reeve’s explanation as to why he left the Joker scene in. Makes perfect sense, especially when if he would’ve used it as an End Credits scene it would’ve seemed like he was next. But using him as a small cameo-like role it allows for the tease and the “eventual” anticipation build up.

    Nobody else seems to have mentioned it, but the final act seems to be setting up a version of 'Cataclysm'. Obviously, if that's true then various aspects will be changed but it also explains the 'Joker' scene better - you need several of the key villains to do the whole 'carving up the city' thing. Plus, I'd love to see Nightwing and the Huntress on the big screen (though not necessarily both in the next film).

    You could interpret that Riddler does know Bruce Wayne is Batman, but doesn’t want anyone else to know. So he kinda tells him, but not fully, minding the security camera recording them. That would line up with the comics where Riddler figures it out, but doesn’t tell anyone because there’s no fun in a riddle everyone knows the answer to.

      I think the reason he repeated Bruce Wayne, a few times in that slow whisper, was because he was testing the water, if he got any reaction or tell from Batman when he said his name, but because Riddler didn't notice anything and Batman waiting before reacting, the Riddler moved along....

    There have been parts of several Batman adaptations I have loved "in the moment". Keaton and Burton gave me a dark, gothic Gotham, Bake and Nolan made Gotham more "real" and Batman less fantastical. But in every adaptation there have been elements I didn't like, Keaton casually murdering criminals, Bale's Bat-voice, Bane (either one).
    What Pattinson and Reeves did here was check every box I had for an interesting, dark, decaying Gotham... grounded hero that reatained enough comic book elements to be fun and a detective narrative that has never been done right before in these movies. And, on top of that, I have no complaints, no "yeah... but"'s. Things like Batman taking gunshots left and right and emerging from explosions unscathed are the "comic book" parts to me.
    I'm sold on Reeves' vision and will be eagerly awaiting anything else that comes out to expand on this world.

      @hotwings.. Nice to see someone not blinded by recency bias. The Batman is great. I’ve bought it, watched it 3 times and will watch it more, it’s a quality film. But the way everyone is saying it’s best ever, over The Dark Knight trilogy, is not my personal opinion. I still love those Nolan films, despite a few flaws they have stood the test of time. People just get something new that’s good and are blinded to all else.
      The Batman is in the top 4 Batman films ever in my opinion but maybe not the flawless, transcendent piece of art that most of these other comments are raving about.

    I'm very glad that you're on cloud nine about this movie. I really like it, but it's nowhere near my favorite Batman movie. I love the idea of a detective story for a Batman movie and I think they nailed the tone and the atmosphere. I just wish the quality of the atmosphere matched the quality of the story. The story just didn't wow me here. It's good, but I wasn't enraptured by it anywhere near as much as I was with the Nolan trilogy, or even Batman v Superman. Also, I'm not 100 percent on board with this version of The Riddler. It's a cool version, but I couldn't fully get into it. I thought it was way too reminiscent of the Zodiac killer, also didn't care for the look of him either. Robert Pattinson was great as Batman, but still not my favorite. Basically, everything that this movie gives us, except for the atmosphere, I've seen done better in the Nolan trilogy and BvS. The score, the casting, the emotionally captivating story, even the action sequences. So overall, I really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to watching it again, but I'm starting to think that people are hyping this movie up to be much better than it actually is in my opinion.

      I agree with most of your points. I really liked the Riddler and thought he really worked. Falconi on the other hand I felt didn't come across as threatening enough.
      I think Colin Farrel probably deserves an Oscar nod for his performance.
      But this won't be seriously compared to the Godfather for quality like the Dark Knight was (and still is, and IMO is better than the Godfather).
      I'd put it roughly in line with Dark Knight Rises. Not as strong in the first 2 acts as DKR, but doesn't fall apart at the end with the reveals as much as DKR.
      So still a great movie. For me better than Batman Begins (the first of the Nolan trilogy) so still a great start and this could go on to match that trilogy when we get more installments.
      Pattinson was a great Batman but his Bruce needs work. Alfred was fine but needs more time. Excited to see where they go with this iteration.
      I think the only place BvS tops this is action and Batfleck (still my no.1 overall Batman performance due to how good his Bruce and Bats is).

    Everyone has those movies that just stick with them and The Batman is that for me. It feels like the exact movie i have always hoped for in a Batman film. The actors are top notch across the board, especially Pattinson, Dano, Wright, and Kravitz. Andy Serkis was great, i just wanted more of him. Robert is MY Batman. He embodies that angry, vulnerable, smart, ninja detective perfectly and also delivers a great and understandable "Bat voice". I adore film noir and this movie perfectly hits all the noir cliches while making them fresh. The music does an absolute ton to augment every scene in this film from personal to bombastic to dramatic, the score slaps. Giacchino's best work hands down and that is a big task. I have seen the film upwards of 20 times(8 in theater) and i am always surprised when it ends because it moves along so well for a slow burn. The car chase in this movie is THE all timer for cinema car chases and highlights that, simply, this is the most beautifully shot film of all time. The cinematography in every single scene is unimpeachable. The atmosphere of this world is on i want to inhabit many times. 10/10 masterpiece and my favorite film since Lord of the Rings.
    Bring on the Penguin show!!!

    I finally saw this film tonight, and wow, it exceeded my expectations. Robert Pattinson was phenomenal. Zoe Kravitz was excellent as Catwoman; despite not surpassing Michelle Pfeiffer (I'm not sure anyone can unseat her), she compliments Robert Pattinson very well. I was also surprised to find out Colin Farrell plays Penguin.....his transformation into the role was brilliant. Jeffrey was great as always. I can't wait to see where the sequels go. I really love the Nolan trilogy, but The Batman almost surpasses those films for me.

    According to Matt Reeves there was another scene with that 'unnamed inmate' from earlier in the film that was cut, where Batman goes to Arkham to try and profile the Riddler, so Joker would've maybe served a similar role to Calendar Man from the Long Halloween. Whilst I'd rather there was flat out no Joker in the film at all, I think that maybe would've helped make that last scene come off less as an obligatory tease for the future. I have no opinion on this new Joker yet, from what little we got I like that he seems to have the more traditional curly/messy hair look from the comics and a grotesque face, but my biggest issue with that scene was I felt it devalued the Riddler a little bit by waving a bigger villain in our face.
    Personally going into this and hearing that we're supposedly getting a trilogy, I would have liked Joker to not show up until the third film, and even then he wouldn't be the main villain but instead Batman has to go to him for information on some wider scheme, with it being implied that between films Batman has met the Joker and already put him in Arkham. I think the smart thing to do at this point with the Joker is to give us a Batman and Joker who have a history, that's something we've still not got in a live-action film. Then again given how good of a job Matt Reeves did with this film there's probably some other angle he has planned for the Joker that we're not going to expect, so I'm optimistic.

    I saw it today, I thought it was really good. I really like the darker take on it, the directing is fantastic, the acting all around is great. I love that we finally get a Batman who actually feels like a legit detective. I love how creepy they made the Riddler. The character arc they gave Bruce Wayne in this was very well done. I also love that shot of everyone following him in the end, pretty nice ending. I'm with you on Joker, I'm sick of him, give me some new villains. I didn't have a problem with the third act, but I was starting to feel the runtime a bit. I didn't love it like you did, but this is easily top 3 Batman movies for me, I hope we get another one. Great review Cody, thank you.

      The consequence of Heath Ledger's Joker being so good is that it convinced DC that they had to put Joker in anything Batman related for it to succeed, a theory Jared Leto's terrible version proved wrong. There have been a few good Jokers since TDK like Arkham Joker, the Gotham Jokers, Telltale's Joker and Phoenix's but Joker's way overused at this point. I've always wanted a live action Clayface similar to the animated series one.

It trully is a film about him in every sense, because its seen nearly entierly from his point of view. Weather its Gordon, Alfred, Selina, Penguin, Riddler etc...they all have different relationships with him yet exisit in the same world. We needed a film that explored Batman as a character more, and we havent really had it since Batman Begins. Its just a great film on so many different levels, really excited for the future!

    Fucking loved it. Also loved this interpretation of the Riddler -- radical incel Elliot Rodgers-esque twitch streamer? Worked perfectly thematically and makes total sense especially as a modern iteration. It was everything they claimed it would be and I've already bought another ticket because I instantly wanted to see it again, if this is the first entry of a trilogy it could easily become my favorite. Pattinson killed it, he's probably my favorite in-suit live action. Only have very small criticisms overall and I'm so happy that's the case, not quite sure what to make of the sequelbait towards the end but given how well this one went I'm willing to just buy tickets to the next two right now, Reeves earned a pass to try anything he wants from me.

    Batman first reached his hand out to help the new Mayor, whom in the 1st scene of the movie critized having a masked vigilante for the last two years, and she was hesitant. The original mayor's son was the first to reach back to Batman and that bridged the new Mayor elect to accept Batman for what is , Gotham's Knight. Which is what makes the flare scene even more impactful. This movie had so many connections tie together throughout its runtime I agree with you Cody, it is a masterpiece. I also can get over how intimidating the new batmoblie was and how iconic it was to hear Batman's boots whenever he would appear from the shadows.
