However, it is commonly said that Nigerian pidgin English originated in Delta State, Warri to be precise.

Nigerian pidgin is creole. Like I said earlier I have a few Jamaican frnds who loves to hear me speak, and compares it to their own creole.
Creole is not broken down French. Creole means the same thing as Pidgin. A mixture of different languages. There are French creoles and English creoles and many share things in common but have their own uniqueness. Naija which is the pidgin spoken in Nigeria is similar to but different from Krio spoken in Sierra Leone and both languages draw from English, French, Portugese, Igbo, Yoruba, Arabic and a few other languages.

I'm an African American who is crazy about Nigerian pidgin....West African culture as a whole....being more familiar with the cultures and peoples of Senegal, Mauritania, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Mali, Guinea , Burkina Faso, Togo and Benin and of course Cote D'Ivoire. Believe it or not I know at least two people from each of these groups. I lived in Southwest Philadelphia for some years. It is the section of Philly that has the highest concentration of West Africans especially Liberians who I'm more familiar with and gradually picked up on speaking some Koloqwa through so much frequent exposure. The few Ghanians I knew walked me through learning Twi. My lady friend Fatou who owns a restaurant comes from Mali where they speak a Manding Niger-Congo language known as Bambara or Malinke. African languages are so beautiful. Even The Wolof of Senegal speak an enchanting toungue. " Nanga def ? " " Mango fe " it just sounds romantic. Sierra Leonians or ' Salone people ' as they call themselves speak krio which has English as it's based with African word and sentence structure and grammatical abbreviations so they'll ask, " how de bodi " or how are you doing... how's your body or health, well being. So it's a good way to understand the simplicity of word construction in creoles and pidgins all over. " Misef a well ' myself, I'm well. I flirted with Nigerian pidgin by watching Nigerian movies which I found all West Africans watch. I dated a Liberian girl who watched them a lot. I had seen them before I met her but more frequently since she and I were together. I always liked pidgins simplicity. ' how far ' how are you ' I dey fine ', I'm good " weytin' be dis " what is this " " I no go gree " I don't agree. " I go land you slap " I'm gonna slap you. africasfinest52 I b Jamaican I sabi every tin wetin dey talk just so u know jamaicas of now a days cannot spell the words they use over time they have adopted the simpler version. U can check RUclips for Jamaican maroons they still speak the language of our ancestors and I cant tell what it is because I understand some words that r Twi which is Ghanaian and I understand some words that r nigerian. When I first met my grandma I never understood a word she was saying because my father long stopped speaking like her b4 his kids were born but I realize that it is because of the way she talks that I understand the nigerian pidgin effortlessly because d way she speaks is more similar to the nigerian pidgin than the way people like me from the other side of the island speak. Like my grandma would say I dey come my side of d island say mi a come. The first time my grandma said kaka and nyash my spelling is probably off but I didnt know what either word ment. The older people who r educated they spell the words differently that we do today I find their spelling is hard to pronounce I still can't spell ngo na gummm but I know when my grandma said it it ment she was hungry and needed food. She would say things like eh woooo when something happened that was very funny to me because of her facial expression.

Pidgin English started in benin City not Warri. Benin City was the only cosmopolitan city in old midwest region of nigeria. It was the only region without a dominant local dialect. So english was mixed with local languages. It started in benin City then spread out to sapele not Warri, Because sapele at the time was more populated and vibrant than Warri. Warri pidgin english only got attraction when they started to put more slang to their pidgin. Benin City Pidgin is the sweetest

@@uchealisha9510 how did it start in sapele? When benin was the only cosmopolitan city in the entire mid west region of Nigeria. The west has yoruba. The east had igbo. And the north has Hausa. But the middle belt had no language homogenized dialect. And Benin was cosmopolitan. That gave birth to pidgin english. Argue with with your phone

Maybe you're right. I'm from Calabar and never even noticed there are so many different Pidgin until I moved to Port-Harcourt and heard a lot of Pidgin from different states in school. I prefer PH Pidgin shar.

Edo State and Delta State were once together and it was known as Bendel back then, the BEN represents Benin and the DELT represents DELTA..They later split into two different states known as EDO STATE AND DELTA STATE...The Edo people and Delta people have been doing everything together from their day one and the Edo people have so much copied the lifestyle of Warri and they now speak like Warri people but they can never know the complete slangs of Warri

I want to say that the original owner of the language is SAPELE not Warri. The language call pidgin was the official language of the "Sapele Boma Boys" They originated it.

Pidgin has been with the people since the trans-Atlantic slave trade as a means of communication between the colonialist and the locals. Check out Jamaican maroons and the Gullah Geechee of South Carolina, USA they speak the same variation of pidgin with southern Nigeria.
But sapele wasn't the the the commercial center at the time benin was. Pidgin english came into being because of trade

I always tell people pidgin didn't originate from Warri. I must admit it's very unique but it's not the original Nigeria pidgin. As a Port Harcourt boy, we have been speaking pidgin before the Warri version of Pidgin became popular in the 90s. I just look away when all these radio stations think if you are not speaking Warri version of pidgin you don't know how to speak pidgin. To be blunt, Warri pidgin is diluted Nigeria pidgin, more or less accented Nigeria pidgin. Nigeria pidgin is naturally 'sweet'. It doesn't have to be warri pidgin.

Funnily enough, I didn't hear anything special or that different about the pidgin they were speaking compared to the general Naija pidgin.
They even had many Yoruba words in their pidgin parlance.. Omo, Kpako, Ajebutter, Alaye, Oga etc....
The so called special Warri pidgin that people make to be one special pidgin that would be hard for the rest of us to understand is just a lie jooor.

The issue with Warri Pidgin is not even the pidgin itself but the accent, intonation and speed in which it is spoken, coupled with the demonstrativeness.
Besides, this interviewer didn't meet the real area!!! He met only "odonyos" in Warri. If you wan confam Wafi yarning, try take ekoro fall in to Agbassa or Okere-Urhobo. Uvwie boys sef na ese for he matter.

Warri is a western corruption.The real word/name is Ewere not warri.Ewe or ewere is what is known,or translated as hebrew today.One of the tribes of Ewere/hebrew is youda(Judah) misspelt as yoruba today.

I'm a Nigerian but I don't understand most of the pidgin English being spoken and tbh, I don't really like it coz it makes us look loud, rude and not educated which isn't true.
Pidgin is the pride of Nigeria. It is authentically Nigerian. It should be developed, renamed, and elevated as an official language in Nigeria.
