There is actual a ton of bias in football as well. The same reason Americans want an American superstar is why English people are biased to their players, and they get sold for far more than they’re worth. They also force them to play in England, and as a result, miss out on the great football being played in Italy, Germany, etc. since all they care about is watching their guys. As someone who consistently follows those leagues it is so hard to find media in English where they know a thing about those leagues outside of UCL. It’s this foolish sense of “nationalism” that I will never understand because they just miss out on great futty just like I don’t understand it in the NBA. I’m American and stay on top of so many football leagues around Europe and it’s awesome. I also love the flavor Wemby, Jokic, Sochan, Doncic, etc have brought to the NBA. That mixed with Anthony Edward’s, KAT, etc has created such a good product. However, sadly I don’t think the overall stigma will ever leave, and really nationalism just grows right now :(. So Americans feel almost fear at the fact these Europeans are better than their players instead of just enjoying the awesome and unique way they play. Media plays a huge part in this as well. Hopefully as wemby gets older we get to know a bit more about him I will say that is one issue with how unique the current best player in the world is, jokic. He’s this mystery and not relatable, which I find super captivating in itself but we’re just so ingrained in seeing these athletic stars who dunk crazy and cheat on their baby mamas lol. I have so many thoughts on this in football and NBA if you couldn’t tell lol 😅
@@Labtiger69 I completly agree with you when you say that what many people find strange in Jokic, is exactly what draws me. Even here in Brazil, despite the fact that it is clear that we don't have good coaches anymore, the confederation and the media still resist in hiring a foreign coach for the national team. Ok... I understand that. But this shouldn't be enough or be the reason why people in America don't care about the NBA anymore. Why? Because there are no great americans? So what? You still have the teams and the games and a lot of great players. Maybe I'm saying this because I don't care. In fact foreign players make the league even more interesting for me. But I'd love even if there weren't foreign players, cause I just love the game.

Dirk is probably the foreign star that resonated most with the American public. Felt like everyone loved the guy and he beat the heat that first year when it felt like the hatred for them was at its peak.
Thats a good shout. I think its either Dirk or Yao, I lean Yao because he lead the basketball craze for the entire continent of Asia which still exists today. Worth noting, most megastar athletes have shorter, simpler to remember names. Yao Ming, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Steph Curry, Ronaldo, Tiger Woods, Tom Brady etc. Hard to market a dude like Giannis when half the world cant even say his name lol
Dirk was also drafted at 19 so NBA fans literally got to see him grow up. Good point about beating Lebron, ppl liked Dirk, but when he beat the Heatles ppl Loved him. He delivered the Justice we needed from the basketball gods. He was anointed, you have to love it. Also he was seemingly past his prime (definitely past his era) and he got one because he was that good that season. Dirk earned his admiration, why Giannis, Jokic & Luka don’t get the same love is beyond me. Maybe after Luka wins one.
“No major surprises this year in the NBA” The Cavs are 26-4 ffs, how is that not surprising and not at least worth mentioning!? I hope they win it all because then the National will have to talk about them.
@@charlesmcgovern2395 The small market is part of it, but as good as Mitchell, Garland, Mobley and the rest of the team are - they don’t have any sexy players to capture the general public’s imagination. I think Grizz-Cavs would be a really good Finals, but it would be terrible for ratings.
Wemby in the last 10 games: 28.5 ppg, 10.3 rpg, 4.5 apg, 4.9 bpg with 3.7 made 3’s per game on 47/37/92 shooting splits. This has the makings of 50/40/90 potential… this could be a 7’3” Kevin Durant on offense and the best player in the league on defense. The first player to lead the league in blocks and three-pointers made… multiple career quadruple-doubles… scoring titles and DPOYs - a lot is on the table with Wemby.
Wemby is more boring than Tim Duncan. I get the fantasizing about his upside but I don't get it. He's soft and I'd rather watch Zach Edey body his lanky ass.
@@abuyusufabdulhakim952 Unfortunately, I agree with you. If Americans didn’t care about top 15-20-ish all-time guys like Jokic and Giannis, I doubt they’ll care much about Wemby. What he may have going for him is a shoe line if Nike markets him properly and a more fan-friendly perimeter-oriented game. He can hit logo threes and there are elements of KD in his game. I do think the more he plays on national TV, the more he’ll grow on fans as they see the unprecedented variety of things he’s able to do well. Though I could be wrong. There’s no accounting for taste.

I’d argue they aren’t. I’d say they’re apart of the problem of there being no face right now. I’m a huge NBA fan, I’m friends with a bunch of die hard NBA fans, I don’t know a single person right now who is like “Lebron is on, we gotta turn this game on!!!” I think fans who watch 1 basketball game every month like LeBron and Curry. I think real nba fans without league pass sit and home and wait for real teams to play.
@@eliyarrows2456The rebuttal to your argument is evident in the ratings of nationally televised games. The Lakers, Warriors and Celtics have had the highest rated regular season games over the last two seasons regardless of who they play. The Nuggets and Bucks are among the lowest rated nationally televised games despite having the two best players in the league on their respective teams. As great as Jokic and Giannis are, no one is tuning in to watch them play in the regular season. Lebron and Curry, regardless of how good their teams are or are not, are the marquee draws.
I love the podcast, but the negativity over the league and this obsession with stars needing to be American does get a bit tiring. The next Lebron/Jordan/Kobe will come if they haven’t already, we are having a fantastic regular season so far, let’s enjoy it

@ totally agree. I’m from the UK but it amazes me he isn’t pushed as an American success story. Obviously he’s Greek, but he came from poverty, barely getting by with his family. The answer to 'why is this generational transition not as good as the ones before?' is much simpler and really obvious if you ask me: Steph and Lebron haven't declined as much as you would expect at their age, especially with Lebron who is 40. Two decades ago, you would have naturally passed the torch by retiring or accepting a more symbolic role on a team. This is clearly not the case and so our minds are still set on these two great legends. Fans are still wondering if they have another chapter to write (and better squad building would have definitely allowed that for them both). There is no actual vacuum for someone to step into. It takes a monumental american talent (I mean Jordan-esque) to rise and snatch the spotlight away from these types of generational, league-defining superstars - and I'm not sure even this does the trick. Perhaps if Ant was having an unequivocal MVP year after what we've seen from him last season - things would have felt a tad differently.
Wemby, as a player, is the future of the league. However, as far as being a star, 7 footers aren't usually embraced by the masses. And Derozan's problem is Mike Brown's offense, not his game -- he's averaging 20 a game on 48% shooting as the 3rd option on a team that doesn't prioritize what he does best which is score off iso's from 20 feet and in.
I agree with a caveat. Although Shaq was awesome, more people imitated Penny. Most 7 footers don't play a style people can or want to imitate as kids. Dirk was the only 7 footer who resonated to some degree because 1) the NBA's jobbing him in 06, 2) him taking down the Heatles in 2011, and, most importantly 3) he played like a guard. People and loved Dirk's shooting. He played an outside style. The inside game doesn't get people excited for the most part. Kids on the playground don't imitate players who's game is exclusively inside.
I dont think celtics are repeating anyway. For the amount of talent they have they should be winning more regular season games. They live and die by the 3 and turn on and off their intensity. Cant count on porzingis either
OKC isn’t going to the Finals…Chet Holmgren won’t survive the post-season. His current injury was caused by contesting a layup from Andrew Wiggins, who plays the 3.
Fox has never made an all star team but is a top 15 guy?? How? And no, injured reserves for all star games do not count in my book. What if all 12 or 13 guys nominated for all star game on both sides were all injured? So we would then allow 50 guys in one season to be dubbed "all stars"!?!?!? 🤣🤣🤣
Injury reserve definitely counts. Because it’s pretty guaranteed every year and at the end of the day it’s on your record. Plenty of young guys like Paolo were injury replacements
Why do people act like these media/fan created awards actually matter. His numbers and on court play shows hes an extremely impactful player. Lebron and Curry are gonna be in all star games until they are 55 lol its not a true metric of the best players
Wemby has more shooting / perimeter ball skills than any of those previous great bigs that didn't resonate with casual fans. There's an argument to be made that he can overcome the 7' stigma
Jimmy Butler is the most important trade piece this trade deadline. Miami will trade Jimmy if these other teams get serious with their offers. I can see 5 or 6 teams jumping into the championship picture if they grab Jimmy before the deadline.
Bill doubting the clippers again smh. After going through one of the tougher schedules so far to start without kawhi and a handful of games without N.Powell & T. Mann. And kawhi should return early next year with a softer schedule going forward
Whoever is going to be the face of the league is going to have to go and take it. The NBA can’t just give it to you. One of these young guys is going to have an MVP season and make a legendary playoff run.
Wemby is under contract for the next 2 and a half seasons at about $15mil annually. Hes already putting up first team all NBA stats and impact - so, if not already, he's going to be a "first-option on a title team" talent for the 2026 and 2027 playoffs, while being 40-50mil cheaper than his peers. The spurs need to act now to build a contender for those 2 seasons, because that type of luxury is an absolute godsend for building a roster in the new CBA era. Year 3 or 4 Wemby with avengers >>> Slightly superior Wemby with god-knows-what of a roster
@@thewalruswasjason101 Hes 2nd only to Jokic in net rating on/off swing, more than Shai, Luka, Giannis. That team is objectively Dallas-level when hes on the floor and objectively Blazers-level when hes off. Bam Adebayo tonight 2 of 10 4points 9 boards 5 blocks getting around 35 million this year, and is due 48,52, and 56 million in 2026, 2027, and 2028. This is a future problem down the line for Miami. The ownership of their draft picks from 2025, 2026, 2027, 2028 are all tricky because of protections and when things are conveyable and how some roll over into the next year. Miami headed for the play-in hamster wheel
The fact that someone (wink, wink, Jimmy and Bernie Lee) had to leak the trade rumors to none other than Shams Charania showed how impossible it was to move Jimmy. The only team that allowed Jimmy be Jimmy and had success with him was the Heat and when they're not interested in extending him, I don't know who would. I guess, like Bill said, trades are hard to come by in today's NBA, so if we had to be worked up about something, it's Jimmy.
Listen man, Pat ain't playing around these kids. I don't think this is gonna change much around the NBA as much as I wish it would. Miami is a very unique situation though. Riley is THE BOSS. All the other owners need to take notice.
So Bill not “all in” anymore on “Wemby’s stock” after one and a half season, just as he’s starting to kick ass all over the NBA, 6th in MVP ladder, guaranteed future DPOY… What’s going on here? I don’t get it. So all that hype was somewhat calculated? ESPN type of S***? I put you as high as I can just so that I can see you fall dramatically? Jesus… Even Bill… Farewell 👋🏻
They did not like the possible offers out there so they backed out for now. And made the statement they aren't trading him. I do not believe them one ioda.
One of the reasons the early 90s transition felt organic is that the stars of the late 70s and 80s were totally washed in a way that is not at all analogous to how Steph and LeBron are still top 5-10 players in the league
So the old man(Pat Riley) makes a “Old Man” decision and that’s a good thing?? So he decides NOT to trade Jimmy only to lose him for nothing in a few months?? He has a PLAYERS OPTION for next year. So JB is in TOTAL CONTROL. Not Pat Riley and the Heat. Not to mention Jimmy Butler is probably the most STUBBORN player in the NBA today!!
I had a discussion with an Englander on NYE here in Nevada County about The New England Revolution. At times, sierras SEEMS quite similar to Boston. Realistically, basketball is not getting less important here. Also, many here DO follow one, sometimes two soccer leagues. That might be because sierras often sends significant athletes out on loan. However, I have seen little Multiplayer here in the sierras. The Bay Area servers do at times, get extremely HARDCORE, for Multiplayer. However, pro basketball does not seem likely to neglect Multiplayer anytime soon, from what I've seen, NBA is doubling down on Multiplayer.
All of these stars can be had FOR THE RIGHT PRICE it’s also crucial to trade a guy a year before they’re going to ask for a trade to maximize your return You can trade a player who goes on to win a championship like AD with the Pelicans and STILL be the best move for your franchise Kings need to trade Fox if they can get a big return

Yeah, the future face of the nba "issue" is like 11th on the list of biggest problems the league has. And internationally, its not actually a problem. The biggest problem in the league is the most exciting part of a game (the last 2 minutes of a close game) being completely unwatchable.

I don't know if it's so much that the best players are foreign born as much as most are in smaller markets so less media coverage and smaller team fan bases? If Jokic or Giannis were on a teams like the Lakers or Knicks, won championships on them, they'd probably be all over national advertisements if they wanted that.
The reason teams don’t make statements like that is because it’s bad for business. Anyone can get traded. Classic out of touch old guy move by Pat Riley

It should be Tatum and Jokic with Ant coming up right behind them for face of the league, but Tatum just isn’t that popular. Jokic is foreign, a big man, and private. And then there’s Ant who isn’t consistent and hasn’t accomplished a whole lot yet. It’s a transition period. It’ll get sorted out.
Agreed. But I think people loved the Magic generally as the up and comers and loved Penny just as much because we thought he would be the next guy. Riley is saving face,if they could get any kind of postive trade asset for an expensive 35 year old player who wants an extension that goes until he is 39-40 they would trade him in a heartbeat. However because of the NBA's complicated cap apron rules he is harder to move then a comparable player of the same talent/age/value would be even 2 years ago.
He was a fun experience, and for a while it felt like it could be amazing, but you're right! Really good player, cool story, but never lifted off to greatness.

The answer to 'why is this generational transition not as good as the ones before?'
is much simpler and really obvious if you ask me: Steph and Lebron haven't declined as much as you would expect at their age, especially with Lebron who is 40.
Bill is afraid that Jimmy would get traded to a contender and make it harder for the Celtics to repeat.
