I’ve now had my r-dynamic for three years having had it as my daily driver all that time. I never bought it for its noise I bought it for the looks, the power, the top speed and it’s utterly no-brainer fuel consumption (42mpg is usual) and besides inside the cabin you don’t hear the exhaust anyway so lay off the noise it makes as it’s an amazing car and I still get out smiling (and able to move!) every time I drive it!! It’s just beautiful and we don’t see enough of them on the road..
Its weird that people think no one could possibly enjoy a sportscar of this caliber. I wish everyone else on the road would die so I could drive alone.
get what you know you will be happy with for the long term, dont keep buying different cars, I still love and own my 1977 Fiat 124 Spider, still smiling
Most people don't know its "only" got 300hp Its tens of thousands less than a V8 It handles better It looks the same You can get in it and drive all day for half the money you would spend on gas in a V8 I like it ! "a thinking man's car"
I just bought the 2019 F-type with the 4 Cylinders. Love it so much it's the first car I have purchased in 20 years. Light and good mileage. I just couldn't justify getting a V-8 with gas prices where they are right now and who knows for how long.
@@honestphil777 I own one. I also own a RE Meteor 350. So, I'm a slow dude or a girlie dude?! Are you that type of dude that's f#cks your wife in 1 minute? Not everything in life is about speed. Each if its own, my money my dreams 🤌🤌
Nice review.! This 2.0L is very much better than I was expecting. 300hp is not bad at all. 0-60 in 5.6-6.0, also not bad at all. Practically speaking, these numbers are plenty for the overwhelming majority of people (who will never track their car). Gas mileage over 30+, that's great ! I have a 5.0L n.a. XK which I love as I like the GT styling more than the F Type. My XK makes a great sound, but I am very envious of that 2.0L gas mileage....and yes, these hp/speed numbers would be fine for me. (I'm about 0-60 at 5.0sec, 385hp)
Totally agree with that. I have the 3 litre XF and honestly, you never get to use the full power of it, in fact you hardly get to use any of it the vast majority of the time. For this reason along with what you lose in practicality, as much as I would love an F-Type I wouldn't buy one - but now I just might, because in this guise it makes an awful lot more sense, and a 300HP 2 litre engine is easily enough power for most people these days. The improved handling due to lesser weight is a bonus too.
@@ryancrawford8042 Good points. But I really agree with the OP. This is the one to buy for most folks. Personally 300hp is enough for me. I'm never tracking the car, and I really hate the loud exhaust noise. Also, I don't want to get a speeding ticket so even with a more powerful car, I'll never ever fully open the taps. I just want a good Sunday morning cruiser with the roof down.😊
A lot of buyers wont even have tried the V6 or V8 and will likely be very impressed with this car. A properly good review this, thanks for taking the time !
From the "Thinking Man's" point of view it makes absolute sense. The HP/Torque numbers sound dead on. The handling for me is a plus. Its looks from every angle are stunning. Style, drive ability, sensible mpg, it's going to appeal to a lot of people. Not everyone buys a car for the pops & bangs & as you rightly said that exhaust note is going to improve. It's horses for courses at the end of the day. Would I buy one ? Probably yes. I'm old, done the big loud motors. I want something that drives, handles well & doesn't take a huge wad of my cash to get up the road. I guess I'm easily pleased, but not that easily. I like it. Great review as always. See you down the road. Cheers, Geof.
Good morning Sir. You are the perfect target market Geof and I am quite sure there will be many of you out there that will buy this car and love it :-)
In reality to drive this car with any vigour it will use just as much fuel. It would be far better crawling through traffic or sat on the cruise control but why buy a sports car for that? Tou can't just judge a car on the headline figures, even a less powerful v6 will be more tractable...add in the fact that the 6 and 8 are supercharged and this car just doesn't deserve an f type badge...this car was built specifically for Aisan markets where the tax on big engines is crazy
But not everyone wants a load of noise, the bigger engines just sound silly for everyday use. Not too keen on the gloss black plastics, could see those looking scruffy and scratched in short time.
They do cost. However, I'm 3 years and 17,000 miles in on a 5.0 XKR (similar enough for comparison with the F-Type) and total fuel and maintenance costs so far stand at £9,500. Tax is the same. Insurance cheaper as the car is older. 2.0 F-Type is an accountants car just like the 2.0 Mustang!
There's one huge advantage with this car over the V6/V8 models. An executive getting up at 4am to drive to the airport, who lives in suburbia, this is not going to wake the neighbours, which the others would. I drove a P300 all of last week and it was a joy. Loved it.
Right, I've found the original video, and I can't help commenting it too. 'Thinking man's F-Type' is indeed my favourite phrase here. Now, I've become quite environmentally minded recently, in all aspects. So, I was once driven in a Jaguar XF, and I was amazed how quiet that car was. I love quiet cars. I would take this car for a long journey from north of Europe across France to Cote d'Azure, or to Spain, that's about 1200 miles, hopefully in nice company. And what we would like to avoid is a headache after a full day of driving. I remember a neighbour couple near my place and they drove in a Ford Mustang 5.0. I once asked them what it's like to have something like that, the man said: 'It's a nice toy', and the woman said: "but it roars and it stinks". So, auditory pleasure is completely secondary for me, and these seem to be the last days for noisy polluting cars. (Un)fortunately.
Brilliant review, Thank you.. I have loved Jaguars since I was a kid, the E-type and I were born at exactly the same time in 1961, and I have been lucky enough to get out in the second E-type ever made and visit it quite regularly. Reg number 77 RW. I Love the F-Type, but could never justify owning one, given my daily 80 mile commute to work, which my current Jaguar handles very well with reasonable running costs. This 2 litre version could well be the answer to my prayers. Once again, thank you for an excellent honest review.
I've placed my order for the 2.0L opting for the improved handling, balance and Eco-friendly factors in lieu of the brutish H.P. and aural orgasms offered by V6/V8s. I always enjoy the reviews even though I'm no longer a boy-racer.
I am selling my Mercedes CLS (3 litre, V6). and am treating myself to my dream car - the Jaguar F-Type, and am considering my options, even the 2 litre, and this video is so very helpful. As a Jaguar fan, and owner of two previous Jags - S-Type and XFS, I love the spirit, design and beauty of Jaguar cars. After watching your video, for me, the real spirit of the F-Type lies with the either the 3 litre V6, or V6S, especially with the twin centered exhausts, and the sound. Oh man, that sound! Great video as always. My mind is made up!!!!!!!
Hey bro I got the f-Type s; and I jus gotta lyk bro I’ve had a lot of problems; faulty O2 censors; my water pump blew up and at 30k miles; and the cheap trash plastic water pipes blew up as well; costed me 2.4k in repairs
Some of the earlier comments sum it up. If your buying an F type, you want the roar of the v6 or the v8 - emotionally that's true. However, I have now driven the 2 litre and while it doesn't have the roar, it has all the excitement when I want it and the control when I want it (which is most of the time). I still feel privileged to be driving it. I'm sold!
Great video and an honest review. Just bought my first F-type (pre-owned 17 plate). Did seriously look at the 2 litre but in the end went for the V6. On exhaust sound alone, the V6 just made me smile (and still does everytime I push the stop / start button!). I completely agree, if you have a coupe, the glass pan roof is an absolute must. Thanks!
@@PetrolPed The V6 and V8 both sound amazing but the V8 is just stupid money, high running costs and you can't use that type of power on UK roads! Cannot believe JLR have done away with the V6!
This will sell with the older market the people in their late 60’s early 70’s that remember the original 1960’s e type. They ll still appreciate the looks of the F type and the jaguar style yet are a bit long in the tooth for the savage performance of the full fat f types. This will be plenty quick enough for them and still look amazing
I reckon this is probably the best F-Type for most people , most of the time, it's more refined, better ride and better handling but probably missing a little for the pure petrol heads.
Great video with very thoughtful commentary. Personally, I would go for the V6, but the turbo charged 4's that are being developed these days are seriously impressive. Despite a lack of straight line grunt, I bet this thing is a blast to drive!
A good review. Unless you have access to a track, most high performance cars have power that can’t be processed. 200 bhp per tonne is bang on the money for all roads.
I feel this going to be an absolute winner for Jaguar as it’s priced right in the Porsche Boxster / Cayman region. Having owned a Boxster given the choice in the used market this I would prefer. Not forgetting that Porsche have also opted for the 4 cylinder engines too. It offers a choice to that area of the market that was missing. Pleased that Jaguar are taking the risk for what would sound like a tiny engine in comparison to the others but for most it would be perfect. Hope this sells well as would love to see more F-Types on the road 😎
And porsche changed their mind and have brought back the 6 cylinder in the Boxster and Cayman GTS 4.0, as sales of the 4 cylinder 718 have been very disappointing.
Has to be v8. I had a xkr for about 5 years and once I fitted a sports exhaust it made a fantastic noise, only masked by the sound of the supercharger (and may wife screaming 'slow down'). I must confess that the 4 cylinder version is an attractive option especially given my xkr did 18mpg around town. Such a great looking car. Thanks for sharing.
Wow I didn't know this existed. Great idea from Jaguar. The bigger cars make too much artificial noise anyway, and the lighter nose makes a lot of sense.
One of these passed me on the HWY today. I was in my Beemer. The looks, sound and color (same) made me want to buy one for my wife. Would think about it
I've driven the F-Type R and V6S on the track and loved them both. This however actually appeals to me as a more practical, daily driver and is currently in consideration - to save $20k for two less cylinders seems fair enough, especially when you can load on more creature comforts with the extra money.. I currently drive a MY2017 XF Portfolio 25t and that is ridiculously fast for a large four-cylinder saloon - I also have a 28i Z4 and that is a scream to drive even though it's 'only' a four - I have no doubt the Jaguar would be just as much fun to drive...
As the driver of an MX5, this really does appeal to me. Sure, the V6 is probably more exciting… but… BUT, cost, mpg, and general running costs would personally worry me too much. With this model I get the stunning looks, fabulous interior and ‘everyday fun and excitement’ performance. Great, intelligent review by the way!!
Been looking forward to this one! Great in-depth review! The 4-cylinder was certainly an interesting choice when jag first announced it & I wasn’t too sure at first, but the jag never fails to win me over. Stunning car, brilliant review
I watched your video on the V6 F Type from 2016 when it was by your own description, your first high end luxury car review. Fast forward to this review and you say you may be a little jaded from driving so many powerful cars, maybe just a little but you did the car well and gave it a good review. I have often debated with myself about what car to get next. The powerful ones blow my mind and make me giddy for short periods of time but the less powerful yet still dynamic cars are just fun all of the time, without fear of losing the license in an instant. You sum this up quite nicely and I'm struck by the thought that since some smaller cars tour so well now too, I need to adjust my opinion on what it is that makes for a good car. Cheers
living in a country were road taxes are decided on engine volume and thus it is fucking expensive to own a 3.0 engine and just not affordable to go beyond 5.0, this car is actually worth considering.
Well, if you are looking to buy a beautiful car like this, the last thing you think about is the road tax or the mpg! You can either afford it or not! And, drop the language old lad, completely unnecessary!
@@boncolumbard3182 Anyone who knows how to handle money and was not born in wealth knows that taxes and costs do matter while being on some sort of budget is a given in life for most people. Unless you say that if you are not wealthy enough, you should stop appreciating certain beauties in life ?
@@boncolumbard3182 yep, buddy! I know too many folks who can't afford them but have them anyway. And too many people who can really afford the top of the line one, and buy the p300. Each one manages its own money.
I bought my 2017 F Type R V8 out of the showroom an have been in love since. You absolutely correct about the exterior and interior looking beautiful but I’m just as in love with the performance and sounds of the exhaust. I’ve owned many sports cars but nothing compares to sounds and feels of this beauty ♥️Great review!👍🏻
"Snap, crackle and pop" sold millions of packets of breakfast cereals in order to satisfy the audible developments delights of many a young lad and lass. Today they have grown up - or have they? Is their ultimate awakening 'carrot' still to be measured in audio-bites? No matter. An excellent review - great sound cointrol! - and informed, helpful commentary.
it make sense to me, the 2.0T is a better option even though everybody is going to disagree I still moving forward with it 300hp 39 mpg, f the V8 & V6. and the 2.0t sound better than the 6 to me. throw a turn e on it I bet you'll have more power than need be and excellent fuel mileage.
The thing I like about what they did was keeping the body the same. I hate what BMW and other car makers do by making the body look silly just because it has a 4 or 6 cylinder. Ohh and sound is everything ;)
I like when car makers make the lesser models different .its so people can see it’s the cheaper model and if I payed top money for the best version I would be hacked off if the poverty model looked the same as it doesn’t make the top model special or different enough for the greater expense.
Jaguar nailed the styling. Looks beautiful from all angles. This version of the car works for the majority of people who buy or lease them new. Has the looks, isn’t stupid fast since it’ll be used as gt or city car and better on gas with a lower price.
Thought I recognised those roads, the racecourse gave away the location. Great review, think your right about your expectation level. 300 bhp would keep most people engaged with their driving. But. The Jag V8’s all sound delicious.
The engine sound is just awesome. It screams "sport" six ways from Sunday - don't know what shall be wrong with that. And if the car now even handles better, it maybe gets closer to the idea of a "sports car" than the heavier V6 and V8. And as always with forced induction engines, I am sure there's some performance tuning package available out there for those that are not happy with 300hp.
Interesting car. I'm in Canada and I drive a 2017 Camaro ss with the 8 speed auto. Great car but like the reviewer said you can't hit it too hard or you're at go to jail speeds in seconds. I did drive a Camaro 1LE 6 Cylinder and the handling being a few hundred pounds lighter was darn good and had it had a heads up display I might have bought it. About 10 years ago i had a Boxster with the base engine and a manual and that thing was great fun and I kind of still miss it....it handled great and you could flog it and not go to jail. I'm not really a fan of the idea of 4 cylinders but this Ftype could be worth a close look. I really like the idea of something you can flog, something that handles well and with the increased fuel economy get good range on a tank of fuel....I'm into road trips. Thanks for this review - I didn't expect to be as impressed as I was.
Great review, well presented and interesting to listen to. I'm still torn between the V6 and the 2.0 but this video has given me a lot of useful information.
I would even consider the 4 cylinder. But on the german market the used ones seem to be barely any cheaper than the v6, while there is a huge gap to the v8. So the best option for me is still V6.
When Jaguar announced a 2 litre 4 cyl I thought they were mad. But on two circuit days the 2 litre I drove (and was driven in by a professional racing driver) had miles more performance than my old 5.3 litre V12. Remember when sports cars were small light and nimble? This is a proper sports car.
I think the commentary's spot-on. Ordinary mortals would love it but of course if you've driven the V8, the 4 is not enough. Better looking in basic form than the SVR though.
Okay, not as groundshaking as the V8 or angry as the V6, but it sounds cool. And it goes well, too: 0-60mph in under 6sec should be enough. And it can do nearly 40mpg. Plus, it's a freaking Jag! I'd sure have one.
Great review. I am driving a 2017 F-type V6 and considering the new 300 model now. There are some great deals out there, but I already know I'm going to miss the roar and the extra power.
One of the reason they having 2.0L is because of the road tax price in some countries especially Malaysia. The bigger cc, the more money you have to pay for the road tax. The 2nd value for this low cc ⁴³ also a little bit higher than 3.0l and above.
It's a beautiful car, but it just isn't as fun as the V8 or the V6. I drove both the V6 and the V8 on track back in April and my goodness they are fun. The sound, performance, driving feel of the V8 is heavenly!
Hi Pete, just stumbled on this old review of yours. The wife has just said that she misses not having a pretty two seater of her own anymore, it's always my practical 4x4 estates on the drive. Whilst walking the dog this morning I spot one of these and thought just how nice it really looks, I'd better read some reviews. The 2litre you've tested here would be perfect for her, I think your take on it may have convinced me it's time to take a look at one. Thank you.
Enjoyed this , i have a new one on order expect it in April.Reason i was happy with this 4cl Turbo was purely looks and i didnt want another noisy car if you like.I currently have a V8 Mustang and it has the sound you would want hence this purchase.Looking forward to the quality and looks.
Interesting review. Good attempt from Jaguar. Engine noise isn’t that bad. But when I saw the 0-60 acceleration I noticed the slow response from the engine. It seems to me the flywheel is too big for this car. Seems this is the catch-all F-type. I would suggest to Jaguar to get an A-class AMG or Yamaha/Cosworth tuned sporty 4 pot as reference to put more sensations and heart in the car, make it more of an experience. Thx for the review!
I've got a 2005 X Type 2.0 diesel. I don't give a flying fuck that it's a Ford-derived engine and Mondeo platform; it goes like a Jag and is a great, reliable, fun yet economical drive.
PetrolPed just found some of your reviews - subscribed! Excellent review with great photography. That F-Type is absolutely gorgeous with lovely graceful 'Jaguar'' lines. The sweeping camera shot around the body to its haunches and that exquisite rear is very seductive. The paintwork looks amazing and has been prepared really well. I suppose it should look good at only 39mls! Good explanation of how the important parts of the car come together in the real world. This review has inspired me to have a closer look at the F-Type for my weekend car. 2.0L 4 cylinder plenty performance for me - I'm sold on the looks alone!
The car looses about 50% of value in the first 3 years. I currently am looking at a 06/2017 which cost 77k€ and now is at about 40k€ with just 25.000km on it and pretty much full spec. Buy it after 3 years, guys.
@@TheSmartbear1 the whole point of a f type is a v8 you might as well buy a mx5 if you buy the 2 litre version it will do the same as the jag but cost you less and at least it’s less embarrassing at the lights when a normal car beats you
The reality is where can we drive the V6 / V8 anywhere near their potential, at even half their potential we will be breaking max speed limits and for most people driving too fast on A road to control properly. At the beginning of this video I thought who the hell would interested in this 2.0L engine in an F type, now after watching the whole video this engine makes more sense than the other two for most peoples ability / usage. So if you want to pose, if you think you are a racing driver by all means go for the V6 / V8 every time, but if you are normal and want a nice sports car that seems easy to live with and you most probably won't end up in the hedge with, then this 2.0L makes absolute sense - I am converted.
Watched this as it has the same exterior of my 2018 model year P340 V6 manual transmission, one of 200 only on UK roads. I daily mine on curvy roads and find it superb. This 2L is an incredible value for money right now so if you're not looking for a thrilling driving experience, then get this. And if you're considering this, give the V8 a pass but drive at least one V6 before making a decision. Manual, if possible.
I drive a 2 ltr TT daily (although with an aftermarket downpipe and stage 2 320hp) and was disappointed after a test drive of a V6 F-type (base model). It felt quiet, heavy and slow with slightly outdated interior. I love the looks, but it didn`t live up to the expectations. I did like the firm suspension & I must say the V8 version sounds amazing. But a 4 cylinder version at 50k.. a lot of better options on the market unless buying purely for the looks.
Definitely agree with you on this one! What a totally stunning car though but if was in the market for one I would have to get the V8, just couldn’t handle the lack of that amazing V8 noise!!
Why the constant obsession with its noise? On a long drive, believe me, you’ll be crying out for good sound insulation and a bit of quiet from the engine. Nobody in their right mind would want to put up with howls, cracks n bangs for a long road trip.
Nice review. Thinking of buying a used CPO 4 if I can find one. When I was younger the noise, sound, and power of a V8 kinda meant something a little bit. Regardless of engine this car will get looks. I went through test driving a mustang V8 and Ecoboost 4. After a few burnouts I found that at this time in life, the 4 was fast enough when I needed it to be for the real world. More HP than the V8s of my younger years. More interested in a well cornering car that can maintain a slightly above legal brisk pace. The V8/V6 growl will impress the fellas for which I have no interest, just the ladies that could care less about cylinder count. They cared more about Cubic inches in other departments where I feel humbly blessed. Red 4 cylnder Jag here in the U.S. more than adequate. Maybe because I’m more than adequate in other areas the sounds of V8s and power don’t matter so much. A beautiful car that handles and is more than fast enough for daily driving along with a beautiful woman to provide the only soundtrack that matters to me when my personal cubic inches get involved is all I need😂😂😂To each his/her own though.
Id have one if had lots of money. Not into speed but love a good gt car that gets me where i want with good handling. Definitely change exhaust and wheels for lighter design.
I can understand why they made a 2 litre...I couldn't live with it though...would have to be a minimum of a v6...every time someone asked about your car and engine...you'd have to tell them it's only a 2 litre.
No one will ask you - if they have seen and heard this thing, people can tell what it is on the inside. On the other hand, in these days of supersleepers and teslas, comparing engine volumes is almost irrelevant.
It's just not fast enough :( It doesn't help I drove it the same day as the v6 400 and the v8, but it's way too slow for how it looks. Even the Hyundai i30N I drove the same day felt faster.
One of the most beautiful cars for lines and shapes a successful project in its entirety, later called by an Italian ....Top Best Amazing really.... by Max from Italy.
The question is ,if i had 50,000 to spend would i buy this?Beautiful looking machine, sensible and probably more realistic for everyday use.I feel it should have been cheaper.Great review.
Great review. I think this engine format will sell by the bucket load particularly in company car land. You nailed it in this video in relation to public roads. This engines characteristics are more suitable to are roads and speed limits. Beautiful looking car.
Several such 2litre 4pots out there, the JLR unit is probably one of the best. 300 bhp from a 2 litre, fantastic. All credit to JLR in progressing the ICE at this time of EVs.
Honestly, not impressive. The 0-60 is over 6 seconds and is beaten by the Toyota 86, not exactly a fast car. The Audi turbo 4 though is ~4.3 seconds and with an $800 tune does 0-60 in ~3.8s, putting it in line with the top spec 5cyl TTRS. Now that's impressive 4cyl performance!
This review popped up in my feed. Coincidentally, I will be in the market for a new roadster in May of 2020. In May of 2009, I bought the very last Tan over White Sky Redline with the Turbo Upgrade Kit which pushed the stock twin-scroll 2.0-liter engine from the standard 260/260 to 320/320. I absolutely love this little roadster but, it's getting long in the tooth and it's time for a replacement. My initial thought was the SLC-43 AMG but, it's being discontinued and I don't want to buy another last year of its kind auto. After reviewing all available roadsters I have decided on the Jaguar F Type. I am leaning towards the V6 but, I will definitely give the 2.0 a go, as I am intrigued by all the reviews which praise its nimbleness in the twisties due to the very light front end. Thank you for this review. It is very well done. And, has solidified my determination to at least give the 2.0 a shot with an honest test drive at my local dealer before I make a final decision.
Well done for always quoting the Torque Figures. Not many reviewers out there do (grrrr) and in real world driving, on the road the torque numbers are mighty important 👍🏼
I’ve been shopping around recently since the new model update came out last year (which personally I don’t like the new headlights design) there are so many 2017-18-19 F types with low miles on them going for 30-35,000. Was considering looking at the 2.0 just for the fuel conservation but think it’ll have to be a V6. The V8 just isn’t practical day to day but the V6 just seems the perfect sweet spot between this and the V8.
Thanks - a very helpful review, unlike the kind of childish stuff you sometimes see from other reviewers. I've been thinking of getting one of these and you have helped me decide......
Yes to the 2 litre coupe. Ive got a milestone birthday in 6 months time, so that's my excuse. I normally prefer a drop top - but the F Type convertible boot is useless for a trip away and the Coupe rear looks so much better. Thanks again!
Jaguar will sell a shed load as this will be their entry car, but for me if I was to buy a Jag, I would want the bad boy noise the V6 / V8 noise will give at low speed. Nice car though.
2 liters are thirsty and sound dead. Better off going for the v6. More torque more noise more drama. Entry level? I doubt this car is cheaper than £50,000+....can never pay that for a 4 pot....
The 2l litre is more than adequate. As a Jag to use more frequently for road trips it's perfect.

Agreed, however for the price point, the figures are not impressive and resell for the 4 cycl will be very poor, at least in America.
Cheers Roger, I totally agree :-)
Trouble is the v8 and v6 are two of the best sounding and performing cars in their price range, this is a bit pants all looks can’t cook
Yep, I was and I bought one! 2018 P300 R Dynamic Convertible in Ultra Blue...great car, stylish head-turner and absolutely fast enough for UK roads👍🏻
Cheers,
Geof.
Then get a Toyota 86?????
geofo60 Geof Harris well to buy it it's going to take a wad of cash to start with.
geofo60 Geof Harris I
But not everyone wants a load of noise, the bigger engines just sound silly for everyday use.
Not too keen on the gloss black plastics, could see those looking scruffy and scratched in short time.
I've got them in my 5 year old Audi S4 and they still look great :-)
I have a 2019 with all extras. Its sophisticated and fun.
It has enough pops and crackles to make me smile.
A 2.0 or a 3.0?
Planning to buy one but can’t figure out 2 or 3 liter
@@75arda81 3 litre makes more noise and fuel consumption is higher.
pops and crackles that annoy pretty much everyone and everything you drive past.
@@johnw65ukYou sound like a right laugh don’t ya
1. Buy a 3 year old V8
2. Use the money you saved for petrol
That is what I would do too !
easier said then done...maintenance, tires, brakes etc...also cost alot, it does depend on your wallet doesn't it ;-)
They do cost.
Exactly what I would do!
I 100% agree , and feeding petrol to a v8 would be my absolute pleasure.
There's one huge advantage with this car over the V6/V8 models. An executive getting up at 4am to drive to the airport, who lives in suburbia, this is not going to wake the neighbours, which the others would. I drove a P300 all of last week and it was a joy. Loved it.
That my friend is a very good point :-)
My neighbours are obnoxious: nothing wrong with waking them up just for the hell of it lol
Great review. Also think they did a really great job with the sound, especially for a 4CYL. Actually, quite amazing.
Hi Dave. I love the E Type too :-)
You are what this F Type had been made for...you are running out of excuses ;-)
I've placed my order for the 2.0L opting for the improved handling, balance and Eco-friendly factors in lieu of the brutish H.P. and aural orgasms offered by V6/V8s. I always enjoy the reviews even though I'm no longer a boy-racer.
How exciting Jerry. Do you know when you are going to get delivery ?
do you have the car? how has the reliability on the 2.0 proved to be?
Did you get your f type yet??
Hey bro I got the f-Type s; and I jus gotta lyk bro I’ve had a lot of problems; faulty O2 censors; my water pump blew up and at 30k miles; and the cheap trash plastic water pipes blew up as well; costed me 2.4k in repairs
It makes absolute sense from the "Thinking Man's" point of view. Since I already have a daily, I got the V6 for weekends and fun..
I'm sold!
Many of the comments are from people who haven't driven it. If they did they would feel just like you :-)
Great video and an honest review. Thanks!
V6 would be my choice too. Lovely sounding car 👌
Um who can drive these big supercharged engines at half blast anyway.
You're right - I'm late 60s and have a V8R AWD. As you get older your hearing goes, so I wouldn't hear the 4-pot - it's gotta be loud!
Fkn idiot. I’m fifty and I’ll see you off on a track anyday...
I reckon this is probably the best F-Type for most people , most of the time, it's more refined, better ride and better handling but probably missing a little for the pure petrol heads.
I think you are probably right ;-)
Great video with very thoughtful commentary. Personally, I would go for the V6, but the turbo charged 4's that are being developed these days are seriously impressive. Despite a lack of straight line grunt, I bet this thing is a blast to drive!
Thanks Tim. It drives superbly, especially through the twisty stuff. I'd have a V6 400 Sport or V8 AWD ;-)
A good review. Unless you have access to a track, most high performance cars have power that can’t be processed. 200 bhp per tonne is bang on the money for all roads.
This thing is plenty fast enough for the public roads :-)
I feel this going to be an absolute winner for Jaguar as it’s priced right in the Porsche Boxster / Cayman region. Having owned a Boxster given the choice in the used market this I would prefer. Not forgetting that Porsche have also opted for the 4 cylinder engines too.
It offers a choice to that area of the market that was missing.
Pleased that Jaguar are taking the risk for what would sound like a tiny engine in comparison to the others but for most it would be perfect.
Hope this sells well as would love to see more F-Types on the road 😎
I agree :-)
And porsche changed their mind and have brought back the 6 cylinder in the Boxster and Cayman GTS 4.0, as sales of the 4 cylinder 718 have been very disappointing.
Hooded Claw they didn’t sell many as most people were disappointed by them and Porsche realized their mistake early on so stopped making them
@@bmwman1981 They stopped making them?
Has to be v8. I had a xkr for about 5 years and once I fitted a sports exhaust it made a fantastic noise, only masked by the sound of the supercharger (and may wife screaming 'slow down'). I must confess that the 4 cylinder version is an attractive option especially given my xkr did 18mpg around town. Such a great looking car. Thanks for sharing.
The fuel economy is attractive but I would have the V8 R AWD :-)
Wow I didn't know this existed. Great idea from Jaguar. The bigger cars make too much artificial noise anyway, and the lighter nose makes a lot of sense.
Definitely my fav reviewer along with Mat Watson. Keep up the great work
I’ll take that 👍
One of these passed me on the HWY today. I was in my Beemer. The looks, sound and color (same) made me want to buy one for my wife. Would think about it
👍
Had the V6 S - after 2 injectors failed I got rid of it - hopefully the 4 cyl + turbo is more reliable, I'll take reliability vs grunt....
Sounds okay to me, plenty of power for UK conditions, puts my 3.0 S Type to shame in the fuel consumption viewpoint. Could be tempted.
I have no doubt too...more than enough performance for most situations !
XE 25T 2019 here
What a rocket.
Used to drive a S40 T5 so I do miss the sound.
But I love my red Jag
Wife loves it so win win
As the driver of an MX5, this really does appeal to me. Sure, the V6 is probably more exciting… but… BUT, cost, mpg, and general running costs would personally worry me too much. With this model I get the stunning looks, fabulous interior and ‘everyday fun and excitement’ performance. Great, intelligent review by the way!!
Well said!
Been looking forward to this one! Great in-depth review! The 4-cylinder was certainly an interesting choice when jag first announced it & I wasn’t too sure at first, but the jag never fails to win me over. Stunning car, brilliant review
Thanks very much. Glad you enjoyed it and it was indeed a great car :-)
Cheers
Thanks for the great comment. Sometime I think all people think about is power and forget the driving feel and dynamics :-)
living in a country were road taxes are decided on engine volume and thus it is fucking expensive to own a 3.0 engine and just not affordable to go beyond 5.0, this car is actually worth considering.
Exactly. I've had quite a few people say that :-)
Well, if you are looking to buy a beautiful car like this, the last thing you think about is the road tax or the mpg! You can either afford it or not! And, drop the language old lad, completely unnecessary!

An excellent review - great sound cointrol! - and informed, helpful commentary.
Thanks 👍
it make sense to me, the 2.0T is a better option even though everybody is going to disagree I still moving forward with it 300hp 39 mpg, f the V8 & V6. and the 2.0t sound better than the 6 to me. throw a turn e on it I bet you'll have more power than need be and excellent fuel mileage.
I agree :-)
The thing I like about what they did was keeping the body the same. I hate what BMW and other car makers do by making the body look silly just because it has a 4 or 6 cylinder. Ohh and sound is everything ;)
I like when car makers make the lesser models different .its so people can see it’s the cheaper model and if I payed top money for the best version I would be hacked off if the poverty model looked the same as it doesn’t make the top model special or different enough for the greater expense.
@@bmwman1981 are you really that insecure?
Get a soundtrack and forget the car
Jaguar nailed the styling. Looks beautiful from all angles. This version of the car works for the majority of people who buy or lease them new. Has the looks, isn’t stupid fast since it’ll be used as gt or city car and better on gas with a lower price.
Its easy , plenty around , buy a year or 2 old v6 for less money and depreciation , job done :)
That is what I would do !
Yeah I was thinking the same, and maybe a private plate to hide the year ;-)
you are still fucked if you live in a country were your government has heavy yearly road taxes on anything powerful though
Loving my P300 everyday. I suspect it's "loud exhaust" is mostly played thru speakers behind the seats.
A very interesting review. A great car for what I would need, handling, looks and good commute vehicle. 👍
😂
Thanks 👍
Forget both of those - V8 is the way to go
I would even consider the 4 cylinder. But on the german market the used ones seem to be barely any cheaper than the v6, while there is a huge gap to the v8. So the best option for me is still V6.
I have the V6 S and the sound is at least 1/2 the enjoyment!!! I previously had a Maserati GranTurismo and it was the same with that car.
There is something very special about a great sounding car !
Who drives long distances without switching the entertainment system on. V8 for track days but as a daily this makes more sense
This would make a brilliant daily 👌
When Jaguar announced a 2 litre 4 cyl I thought they were mad. But on two circuit days the 2 litre I drove (and was driven in by a professional racing driver) had miles more performance than my old 5.3 litre V12. Remember when sports cars were small light and nimble? This is a proper sports car.
It sure is 👍
Bring back the Super Charged inline 6 cylinder engine (AJ16). It was the greatest engine ever made by Jaguar.

I think the commentary's spot-on. Ordinary mortals would love it but of course if you've driven the V8, the 4 is not enough. Better looking in basic form than the SVR though.
Going by this comment that makes us both immortal :-)
Okay, not as groundshaking as the V8 or angry as the V6, but it sounds cool. And it goes well, too: 0-60mph in under 6sec should be enough. And it can do nearly 40mpg. Plus, it's a freaking Jag! I'd sure have one.
Yep...exactly :-)
The V8 is geared for 330 mph at redline in 8th and gets 31 mpg with 575HP, and 700HP tuned. Thats plenty of mpg.
Great review. I am driving a 2017 F-type V6 and considering the new 300 model now. There are some great deals out there, but I already know I'm going to miss the roar and the extra power.
Still drop dead gorgeous though 😜
Nice and Professional Review.
Cheers, glad you enjoyed it :-)
One of the reason they having 2.0L is because of the road tax price in some countries especially Malaysia.
You're right, it isn't as much fun but it is still fun :-)
Daniel Sadjadian it's ugly pal. Somewhere, Mercedes and Porsche are laughing,
Anyone who thinks the F-type is ugly needs serious help. Not even its biggest critics say it is ugly. Like most Jags, it is dead gorgeous.
Thank you.
Glad to be of help 👍

Interesting review. Good attempt from Jaguar. Engine noise isn’t that bad. But when I saw the 0-60 acceleration I noticed the slow response from the engine. It seems to me the flywheel is too big for this car. Seems this is the catch-all F-type. I would suggest to Jaguar to get an A-class AMG or Yamaha/Cosworth tuned sporty 4 pot as reference to put more sensations and heart in the car, make it more of an experience. Thx for the review!
My pleasure. Glad you enjoyed it :-)
I've got a 2005 X Type 2.0 diesel. I don't give a flying fuck that it's a Ford-derived engine and Mondeo platform; it goes like a Jag and is a great, reliable, fun yet economical drive.
i think that this f type body looks the best i think its so much smoother than previous cars. it looks more like the e type which i fully support
Interesting, I've not thought of it like that !
Personally I don't care what it sounds like. Its an F Type Jaguar for heavens sake. Enough said.

Thanks for the great feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed my review. Let me know how you get on once you've gone and had a drive ;-)
The price is crazy for a 4 cylinder!
The car looses about 50% of value in the first 3 years. I currently am looking at a 06/2017 which cost 77k€ and now is at about 40k€ with just 25.000km on it and pretty much full spec. Buy it after 3 years, guys.

Very good review ! That's what i call an honest review ! Stunning car (yes the V4 2.0) and a pleasure to drive daily !!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow thanks Allan. Great to know I've been helpful.
Spot on review pal. I am totally on you with all points. It’s defo the 2ltr Audi TT market.
I looking at a used V8R AWD...not a great deal more money :-)
Why the constant obsession with its noise? On a long drive, believe me, you’ll be crying out for good sound insulation and a bit of quiet from the engine. Nobody in their right mind would want to put up with howls, cracks n bangs for a long road trip.
I've yet to get bored of it but then I am a child at heart ;-)
But on a long road trip you'd switch off dynamic mode and it's a very pleasant drive. I speak from experience, having a V8R AWD - and it's fantastic!
You can never have the right amount of power. It's just a slider where the 'not enough' and 'too much' lines cross.
yeah that 3,400 mile trip to italy in the TVR was really boring....
thespywholovedme1977 I do ✋🏾
Nice review.
Performance is not too bad 0-60 about 5.4 seconds... right not too bad... lol as i drive home in my 0-60 in "still calculating" Corsa Utility bakkie!
LOL 😂
Id have one if had lots of money. Not into speed but love a good gt car that gets me where i want with good handling. Definitely change exhaust and wheels for lighter design.
I can understand why they made a 2 litre...I couldn't live with it though...would have to be a minimum of a v6...every time someone asked about your car and engine...you'd have to tell them it's only a 2 litre.
"every time someone asked about your car and engine", less than once a year?
I know what you mean :-)
LOL...good point ;-)
...depends on how nice you car is I suppose...but yeah I think you're right...it wouldn't be too many.
No one will ask you - if they have seen and heard this thing, people can tell what it is on the inside. On the other hand, in these days of supersleepers and teslas, comparing engine volumes is almost irrelevant.
Brilliant, honest review. thank you!
My pleasure 👍
It's just not fast enough :( It doesn't help I drove it the same day as the v6 400 and the v8, but it's way too slow for how it looks. Even the Hyundai i30N I drove the same day felt faster.
+Tyre Reviews I can imagine when driven back to back with its big brothers it would feel really slow 😥
And where is the stretch of public road for 155 mph? You guys are sooo dumb!
@@realalsenor It's not about top speed, it's about acceleration.
@@JGreen444 If it's about acceleration any e-car is quicker.
One of the most beautiful cars for lines and shapes a successful project in its entirety, later called by an Italian ....Top Best Amazing really.... by Max from Italy.
I'd get the 718 if I was into 4 cylinder engine sports cars. The F Type V6 would be the best choice unless you're into that 911 Turbo S.
718 is a great car :-)
I have a XK 5.0 AND I LOVE It.
As to this car from what I see and the facts I think I would certainly buy it.
The question is ,if i had 50,000 to spend would i buy this?Beautiful looking machine, sensible and probably more realistic for everyday use.I feel it should have been cheaper.Great review.
It's still a whole lot of car for the money :-)
Yeah true, but i feel if i bought used for fifty grand would go a long way.Maybe even a future classic.
Great review. I think this engine format will sell by the bucket load particularly in company car land. You nailed it in this video in relation to public roads. This engines characteristics are more suitable to are roads and speed limits. Beautiful looking car.
Certainly looks great and drives great :-)
Just buy a slightly used v6
Yep, that is what I would do :-)
I did, just shy of 47K with 9500 miles on the clock, 3 years old, beautiful car that's mine for life 😁
Several such 2litre 4pots out there, the JLR unit is probably one of the best.
Why not?...the new Ford mustang has a 2.3 ..4 cylinder turbo..and a 5.0 v8 model
The 2.3 is awesome and sounds fine. Rented one in Arizona for 11 days.
Great to hear. Good luck with your search 👍
300 hp and nearly 300 torques? For god's sake, how much more power do people need on the public road???
Very true :-)
Never enough! I have 560bhp/720Nm and on occasions wish for a bit more!
350/350 would have been better tbh.
I agree most people can't drive anyway
There is never enough my drag car is 2300 hp 1900 ft torque. But 99% of the world needs a Prius detuned lol
Good review, voice never gets boring/atonal compared to others.
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it :-)
Well done for always quoting the Torque Figures. Not many reviewers out there do (grrrr) and in real world driving, on the road the torque numbers are mighty important 👍🏼
Torque is what gets you up the road quickly ;-)
Torque is what you need to keep passing the others...
Yeah, soooo many focus only on HP...that's nice and all but it's torque that gets the wheels turning, hp keeps em moving.....
Let me tell you, it sounds pretty damn well!
👍
Thanks - a very helpful review, unlike the kind of childish stuff you sometimes see from other reviewers. I've been thinking of getting one of these and you have helped me decide......
Wow Chris that is great to hear. Which way did you decide ?!!
I agree mate :-)
Gavin Ivers not necessarily true. Audi sells more r8 v10 than v8 lol
2 liters are thirsty and sound dead. Better off going for the v6. More torque more noise more drama. Entry level? I doubt this car is cheaper than £50,000+....can never pay that for a 4 pot....
With the new model the spare Wheel has been replaced with a flat tyre kit, this gives you a lot more boot space for those weekend trips.
Would love to see the manual transmission model reviewed.
I'll see what I can do ;-)
I think only the V6s come with a manual option.
