I just wanted to thank you for all the lens tests you have done. I am a frequent watcher and whenever I am interested in a lens, I search if you have covered it first. I like that you don't ramble as much and that I can quickly jump to the quality tests if I am in a hurry. Also your tests are consistent and I can compare lenses that you covered years ago to recent ones without a problem. Keep it up!
Indeed, if you compare this to Fuji's 10-24mm offering, it is hard to see why you would prefer that one over this. With the a6700 even the Sony body isn't as bad as it used to be although the 40mp fuji is nice.
@@Eikenhorst Fuji is bad at making ultrawides and ultrazooms. And Sony now stopped being delusional about gimping their apsc lines, imo they are leading the way in apsc right now with a6700 and all the high quality lenses (along with 3rd party).
Looks fab. I don’t worry about distortion or vignetting…my in camera corrections are always ON. Top priority for me is always squeezing excellence out of the smallest, lightest packages, so these new Sonys are exciting!
I must be in the small camp that would willingly give up OSS for the option to have the lightest and smallest lens possible. In any case, for landscape photographers this is fantastic. Usually shooting f/8 anyways, weather sealing and internal zoom is a nice feature over the old 10-18mm, and that 20mm at the long end is an actually pretty nice focal length on APS-C. Small detail I liked when I handled one at an event was that is has an actual zoom ring and the rocker on the side. Image quality here looks better than my old 10-18 f/4, but not as nice as my full frame lenses. That’s probably to be expected- comparing this to either the 20mm f/1.8 or the 16-35 GM is unfair, but it’s also considerably more portable. Really only complaint was that the focus and zoom rings are really close, probably not avoidable with the compact length.
I just bought this brand new on eBay for $250! I will use it on my A7IV for travel, along with the other APS-C lens, a 70-350mm G, which I own and find amazing for travel. The image quality, even on the APS-C image size from the A7IV, is terrific, and this lens seems, from your review, to be the same. The two should make an excellent pair. I matched the quality of the effective 525mm from the 70-350mm G against my Sony 200-600mm G lens, and despite 11MB vs 33 MB at 5K on my Apple Display, the wee, light lens seems sharper even at the long end, and 525mm vs 600mm seems very close. It blew my mind.
Thank you Christopher for another great review. I have included the new Sony 15mm 1.4 G and FE 24mm 2.8 G on my wish list for future reviews. And it's very useful to have a direct comparison between FF and APS-C for FF lenses, since some FF primes could also be used with smaller sensors.
Thank you for this review! Would really love to see a review of the NIKKOR Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3, as there are basically no video reviews of it and as it's an interesting contender to Tamron's 28-200mm
Hi Chris, do you also have a video about how you test a lens for sharpness especially? I mean a video showing you how you’re testing a lens on a tripod and at what distance with what focal lengths you are focusing on your chart you are always using? Very curious about that exact procedure. In your video about the canon Rf 15-35 you seem to get better results than my copy. Wondering if you are using different distances between camera chart. Would be very nice explaining us how you work! Thanks in advance for such a video, couldn’t find one on your channel so far. Greetings, Erik
I've been waiting forever for an update on the 10-18mm. Sadly f/4 without stabilisation makes it comparative to third party stuff about the same size for shooters with more pocketable bodies without IBIS. Just make us a quality wide with native optical stabilisation already, update the 10-18 or make a wide prime with higher image quality, please Sony.
This is one of the lenses which makes me feel a bit bad for not shooting Sony APS-C and IMHO it plays along with APS-C strengths very well. It's really small and light, image quality is excellent and the price is very competitive, especially when compared with its predecessor and similar offering for Sony and other systems. Sure there are some compromises, like distortion (which is very well corrected) and lack of image stabilization (which is less of an issue for wide-angle lenses) but there are no compromises in core areas of size/weight/image quality/price. I would be more than happy if something equivalent gets released for FF (like 15-30 F5.6) but I doubt that will ever happen.
i know this is an old comment, but me too... although there's the 16-35 PZ that looks fantastic, I wanted a 12-24, or 12-20, or similar - since i already have the 24-105, i'm more interested in the ultra wide..
hi christopher are you planning to test nikon's z 24-200mm zoom lens? i'm curious how it compares against canon's and sony's counterpart super zooms i think it would be interesting
That wouldn't be particularly difficult given the poor results that lens provides and how old the design is. Age of design is not a true problem as such if the design had been high quality.
0:37 Nice work Chris. I hope someone will be crazy enough like me to check this lens by removing rear plastic. I am guessing sony deliberately did to avoid using it on thier A7 series
I really love your reviews and you are one of my 'go to' reviewers that I've subscribed to. But why on earth are you reviewing this lens on a camera from 2014 that was discontinued years ago? Any of the A6000 series would be a lot better and are the series this lens was designed for.
Looks like every lens manufacturer is relying upon camera corrections for vignetting and distortion. I think it would be better to test those camera corrections. How far the camera corrects the distortion and vignetting. What say? As usual fantastic review though!
I have the Fuji 10-24mm v1, and am not that happy with it. It’s soft at the long end, and corners seem average. Also, it’s basically FF size / weight. This is a slightly shorter range, but less than half the weight and way smaller. Fuji need to up their game to play to the APS-C advantages of smaller size / weight
Which ultra wide angle lens best choice for indoor real estate videography with Sony ZV-E10 camera ? 1. Sony 10-20mm 2. Sony 11mm f.8 Or any other option
Did you set the zoom speed in camera or via the lens (will it reminds the speed on another camera) And are those speed adjustments on every PZ lens possible, I never saw anything like that in the settings with the kit lens.
Can you please review the new sony 50 mm f2.5 G for full frame cameras, I frequently watch your RUclips reviews, they are just the best, on point and fun, a review would be really beneficial before I make a decision on buying one. Thank you so much, God bless
Hi Christopher, I shoot images and video clips for stock agencies. Is it worth my investment in this lens? Technical issues associated with this lens are not so critical on video clips, but there are strict technical requirements for still. It seems such a good go-to lens when I am out and about. What do you think?
@@daniellehotsky1776 Not on my Amazon. 10-18 is for 700 dollars, new lens is for 930. New lens is better but it's way more expensive and don't have oss. Price's for Sony APSC lenses is a joke.
@@daniellehotsky1776 Yes. I don't buy Sony lenses. There are better alternatives like the Sigma which not only has better lenses, but is even cheaper. Tamron, Viltrox, Samyang / Rokinon. There is a lot to choose from. If it weren't for these companies, Sony APSC would have been dead for a long time.
Christopher, could you please, if you can or really want to, the file for me to print this test chart of yours? i do have some lens to test compare, like the nikkor 50mm f1.4 AI vs the AIS version, and compare too, against the Olympus Zuiko 50mm f1.4!
in principle yes, just unsure if everything is implemented as it should when using a lens that has a manual zoom button/rocker. this in conjunction with e.g. a7s2 having clearimagezoom as one of the 3 zoom options in settings (the other being lens zoom or similar naming), suggestive of potential "sensor" zoom (CIZ) on actuating the rocker on the lens if not implemented right. but good to know
The no-OIS decision is insane! This lens is intended for the ZV-10e which has no IBIS either… The mentioned camera and this lens are heavily crippled and for vlogging purposes useless.
The lack of OSS is annoying with a lens of f4 considering the fact that the majority of APS-C-Users don't own bodies with inbuilt image stabilisation. A total fail as also is 16-55 2,8 to this regard. A new flagship APS-C-Camera which will arrive soon won't solve this as it will continue that most APS-C don't own stabilized bodies. No real advancement to the 10-18 f4 regarding lack of OSS and image quality
It's a long term plan, probably. The newer mid range apsc may come with ibis as a standard. It's worth the sacrifice in weight, especially for tiny apsc bodies. Sony may be expecting the majority to eventually upgrade while the non-ibis bodies phase out, unless they're going to scam people by releasing another a6400.
It's absolutly fine, that they have gone this way to keep it small and lightweight. If you want the OSS, go for the older version. I personally wouldn't buy camera bodies without an IBIS. It's worth the money.

You’re mistake. The round vignette at 10mm is not from the rear plastic aperture, it’s from the image circle of the lens.
And the odd shapes vignette on the 20mm is likely from the lens hood, not rear plastic aperture also.
