I am really looking forward to watching all of the POWER videos. About 7 years ago, I was involved in buying a lot of POWER8 servers and I never had chance to actually use them. This is making me itchy to get one off ebay and set it up.

Yes!!!! Holy cow this helped me sooooo much. Thank you. I was never able to get my Power 750 RAID array setup and I never could figure out why. I thought my system was broken as the array kept failing. I was using generic HGST disk and never knew what was wrong. I guess I need IBM official drives. Can't wait to see the rest of the series.
Glad to hear you're looking forward to the series! Yeah, usually with "enterprise" hardware the vendor-provided disk controllers are locked down to only accept disks that have the vendor-provided firmware. All in the name of "helping the customer" by ensuring stability and reliability with vendor-qualified disk firmware!

Great Video!!! A little info. When doing a full firmware reset, do you have to reload the Frame Power 7 - CoDs from IVM or HMC ?
Nope, from what I can tell those appear to be stored permanently somewhere other than the firmware settings.

POWER8 is pretty much *exactly* the same as POWER7, so no real need to do separate videos. I still use VIOS 2.x on POWER8 so I can get IVM for standalone management. Really the only difference is you can use AIX 7.3 instead of 7.2, IBM i 7.4 instead of 7.3, and you can use the ppc64el distros of Linux instead of ppc64. But installation, setup, etc. for all of those is exactly the same as for the one-version-back versions on POWER7.
I don't have a POWER9 or Power10 server, but from talking to some people who do, that's when some larger changes came. It sounds like IBM no longer uses the POWER-based service processor, and it's a somewhat more traditional BMC and the UI for remote management of the system has completely changed.

Thank you for sharing your IBM power server with AIX knowledge. I am thinking of getting a IBM iSeries Power6 P520 System for hobby fun. It is a headless server - has no graphics card which is typical for non INTEL corporate UNIX servers. But would it be possible to run X Windows on it and be able to use it remotely? Edit: I discovered a IBM graphics card can be fitted to a IBM Power6 P520.
I'd think you'd need to run a hypervisor within a LPAR and then potentially virtualize Windows within that

With all 8 hard drive slots populated with 10k disks, it idles at 280W and if I start a moderate CPU load with a multi-threaded compile job, it looks to draw 310W.
im new to this and when i access the ASM under power controls i dont have an option for Set AIX/Linux partition mode boot to Boot to SMS menu. Why is that?
Hi matthew could you make an episode on licensing and how one might get or not get hobbyist license for real hardware or emulated?
Unfortunately when it comes to IBM, there's really no such thing as hobbyist licenses. They are not interested in supporting/acknowledging enthusiasts (or even professionals working outside of their workplace) at all.
Nor is there any emulation possibilities for IBM i. It only runs on supported POWER hardware. qemu's ppc64 emulation doesn't include all of the necessary features (IBM i depends on, and IBM includes in the POWER chips they make, instructions for things like tagged memory that aren't in the Power ISA) nor firmware emulation to support IBM i (When IBM POWER servers are configured to run IBM i, they are no longer running as CHRP machines but instead are a super-proprietary IBM thing that isn't documented anywhere outside of IBM).
As for licensing IBM i, when you install it, it doesn't need a license until 70 days later. But then you can't log in or do anything, without a license you'd need to reformat and reinstall.
For AIX, there are no license keys or anything -- if you can install it, it will work, regardless of whether or not you're entitled to use it.
Linux, of course, requires no licensing.
You did not mention LPAR in the video :( I miss the ASM login screen, the P10 ebmc login isn't as pleasant looking. Btw there are ways to get serial console, but I'm pretty sure it's not in the documentation ;)

Hi Matthew, I have 2 Power5 550Q. Are you wiling to make how to install OS on those servers?
I don't have any IBM POWER servers older than the POWER7 in the videos, but @clabretro has done a couple videos on his p5 550Q servers (ruclips.net/video/UvdoILrlwww/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/FCIeqRgRNSQ/видео.html). The PowerVM/VIOS stuff might not be supported on your machines, but in terms of installing AIX or Linux, the ASMI looks identical so you should just be able to go into SMS and boot from your installation CD.

Hi Matthew, I'm looking forward to watching the POWER series. I work with IBM i on POWER9 and POWER10 servers daily but I only started when POWER8 was readily available. I got my hands on a 720 that was on its way to dispo and I was looking forward to getting it online with Linux with the same process I'm familiar with utilizing HMC but was greeted with a unfamiliar install process so it's been sitting on the floor in my shop. Hopefully with your series I can figure out how to cobble this together and finally get Linux on it. I plan to try and utilize my vHMC, vSAN, and VTL on direct attached fiber. Because this is my first experience with setup of IBM Power730 and I'm trying to understand how to deal with ASCII terminal connection .
Hi Alexei, it's the standard pinout used for network gear, so if you search for "Cisco console cable", for example, you'll find lots of them. There are the traditional ones that go to DB-9 to plug into a serial port, or now there are a low that go directly to USB and have the USB UART built-in so they'll just show up as a new serial port on your computer that you plug them into.

Hi Matthew, can linux be installed on IBM P5 server?
I think back in the POWER5 days, IBM still had separate "System p" and "System i" POWER servers; if you have a "System p" server, yes, it should be possible. You'll need to use a distro that support ppc64 big-endian (most have dropped it and switched to ppc64le), but Debian Ports still maintains ppc64. You can grab a netinst iso from cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/ports/current/
