    Good comparison, thanks. You didn't talk much about video but, surprisingly, I think the Pixel did a better job for video in your comparison. One thing to remember, on the Pixel (at least on my Pixel 5 which is running Android 12) you can change face retouching to Subtle or Smooth, which would eliminate that over sharpening of her face.

      iPhone portrait was better because Pixel’s processing is too aggressive. But for flattering portraits, my 7 year old Fuji XT1 looks gorgeous compared to my iPhone 11 Pro. It’s the same reason - iPhone seems to over-process skin texture compared to Fuji. And it’s not just portraits. In most still photography images, the Fuji just looks a lot better. There are a few difficult situations where the iPhone processing does have the advantage, but usually not. I import a lot of my Fuji photos onto my iPhone. And when I’m showing people some photos on my iPhone, they often ask, “Wow, you took those pictures on your phone?” I always reply, nope - they are from my Fuji. But my point is that for even typical viewers, the difference is noticeable and even enough noticeable to actually ask about it.

      he needed to take pictures in 1x in a portrait, since there is not an optical crop from the matrix, but a digital crop, respectively, the photo will be worse in detail than the iPhone in a 3x portrait, since an optical sensor is used there, so this is not an honest comparison and not correct

I think if you owned either one and not comparing them side by side anyone would be happy with the pictures. I like night shots better on Iphone I think. A raw file doesn't serve as a parameter to talk about realism, that is why it is a raw file, because it is equal to a negative. Ultimately it is the photographer who develops the image. What matters is the dynamic range and sharpness, the rest, like the "colors", doesn't serve to measure the quality. From I appreciate is that the raw file on the Pixel looks better than the iPhone.

      Google just should've used a bigger sensor but with physically larger pixels instead of making them tiny and then recombine them which is stupid.

    3:47 It's not scaled to 12 megapixels. It uses analog binning (even though the official specs don't mention this), so it behaves like a 12 megapixel sensor (I personally would have preferred a 30 megapixel Bayer sensor for the tele camera). It is simply equivalent to 103mm, whereas the iPhone is equivalent to 77mm. That's why there are more details or approximately 75% more pixels per object.

    • @LeeZavitz
      @LeeZavitz  3 года назад +2

      so they aren’t downsampling 48mp to 12? I thought they were and that’s why it looked so good

    • @Quoutub
      @Quoutub 3 года назад +16

      @@LeeZavitz No, everything indicates that they don't downsample, even if some journalists think that. It is called charge binning, so it's not digital binning and makes the sensor behave more like a 12 megapixel sensor. A pixel can't measure the amount of light 100% correctly, that's called read noise. More pixels mean that the total amount of read noise is higher. For example, 100 light particles (photons) hit a pixel. The pixel doesn't measure the amount of light correctly and thinks that there were maybe 102 light particles, not a huge difference. But if 100 light particles are distributed over 100 pixels, then each pixel receives approximately 1 light particle, but each pixel still can't measure the light correctly, so some pixels think that there were 3 light particles, even though there was just 1 light particle, that's a big difference. That's the reason why more pixels are worse in low-light conditions, more read noise. The 50 megapixel mode of the sensor would lead to more read noise in the shadows because more pixels are read out separately. Google seems to ignore the 50 megapixel modes, I guess that no other 12 megapixel sensor of this size was available. The Pixel 6 (without periscope camera) still only offers 7x digital zoom like the Pixel 3.

    • @robertwilsoniii2048
      @robertwilsoniii2048 3 года назад +6

      @@Quoutub That's correct. They're using quad bayer arrays on the physically larger sensor, and they're pixel-shifting these large quad bayers too (that's what Tensor does. Tensor is an algebra in math).
      They're treating the thing exactly like a 12mp sensor with larger pixels just like the iPhone 13 pro max.
      They probably went with the Samsung sensor to save money over the Sony sensor in the iPhone to make Pixel 6 Pro cheaper. Google has always been about reducing noise in shadows. That's what Pixel 5 and 4a 5g and 5a were all about. They did this by using longer shutter speeds and hdr bracketing vs the old way they just did burst shot merging with a constant shutter speed and iso.
      They differentiated between shot noise and read noise (shutter speed vs iso performance). Pixel 5 reduced shot noise only, for less noise in the shadows. Pixel 6 kept that progress and added reduced read noise via the new hardware (bigger sensor, quad binning (bigger pixels)) for even less shadow noise and thus greater dynamic range in shadows (for photos). Burst merging reduces shot noise but increases read noise. Google used burst merging to keep 'zero shutter lag' (which was a dumb reason IMO and were right to scrap that reason with pixel 5) and because burst merging, though increasing read noise, overall reduces average total noise of a photo (especially in highlights) and increases dynamic range and produces a balanced even exposure (but does nothing for low light photography, which is why 5he original Pixel came with a high cri led flash).
      Later on Pixel 3 they addee night sight, which still used burst mode photography but added changes to the gamma curve to control color and greyscale tones. They made the photos look like famous night paintings from the 18th century (can't make this up). That was night sight.
      Pixel 5 changed night sight to add in hdr bracketing with different shutter speeds on different frames to reduce shot noise in the shadows; it uses user hand shake when shooting to do pixel shifting to eliminate demosiacing and eliminate hand shake motion blur from hdr bracketing. And then, now, Pixel 6 uses Samsung's physically larger sensor with quad pixel binning to reduce read noise. Together all these things produce Pixel 6 photos.
      Videos on Pixel 6 use HDRnet, which is like the old HDR+ burst photography on Pixel 4 but it's doing it for videos. I assume they assumed they'd need zero shutter lag for videos and so fell back on the old hdr+ algorithm used for every frame (so 30 or 60fps). But, it's probably still doing burst merging quad pixel binning and pixel shifting 30 or 60 times per second at 4k resolutions (hence Tensor) and this is probably why you can't shoot 4k 60fps video on every lense/sensor combo because for one the ultrawide is only the small 12mp sony sensor. I also assume Google assumes 60fps implies shorter shutter speeds with burst merging frame by frame via hdr+ thus they need to fall back on/rely more heavily on the larger physical primary sensor and the pixel-shifted quad binning to make it work without a lot of noise in the shadows. I also assume shooting 24fps would make the math weird and hence they exclude 24fps frame rates 🤷🏻‍♂️. iPhone probably got equaly large and top notch sensors/hardware for every lense on fhe iPhone because it is a higher cost no expenses spared sort of device, sort of (the iPhone does cut costs with display resolution and they do look blurry to me compared to a 515 or 538ppi device 🤷🏻‍♂️ like ghe Pixel 6 Pro, OneOlus 9 pro of Samsung Galaxy s21 ultra).
      This means videos on Pixel 6 have more shot noise than photos on Pixel 6 so the dynamic range of videos is worse than the photos a little bit but it's still better than previous pixels' video which had more read noise from the smaller old sensors and no hdrnet at all.
      All just incremental improvements. Google is always down in the trenches fighting for simple inches and then holding the line against iPhones. They haven't had a definitive breakout moment yet. But I suspect that the 6 pro photos look better because either the physical sensor on the 6 pro is larger than on the iPhone 13 Pro Max or the quad bayer pixel sizes are physically larger than the individual pixels on the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
      Now, personally, I'd rather have the high resolution image raw without the quad binning because I love high megapixel photography but that's just me.
      Also keep in mind Pixel 6 has no hdr10, hdr10+ or dolvy vision recording. It's doing just tone mapping. I think Apple is gearing up for dolby vision photos and is intentionally clipping shadows and highlights to test their phones abilities to do that -- maybe on iPhone 14. I don't think it's a coincidence that iphone 12 has better tone mapping on photos and videos than iphone 13 and that iPhone 13 suddenly has a 1,000nits peak brightness display. That's no accident. 1,000 nits is the hdr10 standard specification, along with wide color gamuts. Apple pioneered wide color displays, and created the heif 10-bit wide color photo format that it uses today. With Apple's LTPO display technology we may see true 10-bit displays on iPhone 14 pro. 🤷🏻‍♂️
      I think Apple is gearing up for 1,000nit photos pretty soon if you ask me.

    • @dylanraga
      @dylanraga 3 года назад +3

      @@robertwilsoniii2048 There no containers or standard formats for HDR/DV ages atm, but Apple is definitely looking out to push for HDR imagery ASAP. They actually already implement their own native version within some of their native apps; iPhone photos capture additional highlight information and saves it as a HDR gain map within the final photo, and the stock Photos app can brighten up those highlight regions past 100% display white. I did notice that the iPhone 13 does blow out photos more often, but the highlight information is probably still there in the HDR gain map, and they can be recovered when viewing the in the Photos app -- photo comparisons in reviews/videos loses this information.
      In regards to the 1000-nit display, that's not really a "coincidence", it's simply just the best panels that Samsung has to offer, and their own flagships perform the same. 1000 nits is also unnecessary for the implementation of HDR imagery.

    I prefer the raw dng from the pixel. Even when I use a DSLR, I never shoot jpg and what has drawn my attention to the pixel is its wider dynamic range. AI computational photography won't be as good as editing an image yourself. So if the pixel is capturing more data in its raw files, I would prefer it over the iPhone as my pocket camera. I am sure the pixel post processing will improve over time with additional software updates. What would be a deal killer is what is baked into the hardware that cannot be fixed later. So I would not go with the iphone.

    That Pixel's over-sharpening of facial texture is one of my biggest grunt with the pixel cameras. Many pixel donkeys consider it to be better details. It was clearly visible when you zoomed in on the potrait the hair detail on iPhone was so much better compared to the Pixel. Pixel just cranked the sharpening and and facial texture to the max giving out unnatural potraits.
    While, in the wide landscape shots the Pixel's computational sharpening does gives out better detail than the iPhone.

  • @syimang
    @syimang 3 года назад +1

    I like potrait mode in Pixel more. It's over sharpening yes..but at the same time it looks differrent & dramatic..iphone is good but it is as good as what samsung or huawei does in potrait mode, maybe because it's too natural looking true to life shot. I mean you see the person & you see the photo, then you would say..ok..nice! but Pixel is different. You see the person & you see the photo taken & you have that different feeling..you know..it's that wow factor..well..just my opinion anyways. 😊

    Constantly doubting whether Pixel sharpened the pics while not realizing that even Apple sharpens the pics is annoying. I much like Pixel's pics more. Apple has washed out looks on all its pics and iphone takes unnatural colours and makes it all blue in almost all the pics while Pixel has the most realistic colours I have ever seen. The details are a bonus on Pixel which Apple can't match.

    Overall prefer the iPhone, but more for convinience than everything: it's far easier to move your files to a macbook with airdrop, specifically if you shoot 4k video for example. hopefully Google will refine the computational processing over a few updates. They need to improve the white balance in night shots as I think that's the main area the iPhone has the upper hand. iPhone crushes too many shadows in high contrast scenes whilst the pixel goes a bit too far in it's HDR.
