  • Let's breakdown the backstory of the madman, military genius, and vicious warlord Drago Bludvist! Now Drago Bludvist was a strange man from a strange world who was designed to look racially ambiguous and totally separate from the Vikings of Berk, who built an army, obtained a Bewilderbeast, and gave himself the title of Dragon God.

      Tiny thing: Drago is easily the weakest villain of the franchise and his backstory sounds like nonsense that’d never fly in the real world. You build Empires by learning from your failures, being flexible and peacefully proving that life serving under you is preferable to any alternatives. Drago does none of this: he can’t learn from his failures because he dodges the blame and executes the scapegoats he creates, he can’t allow his strategies to adapt to the changing times because he’s a control freak and serving in his army means a lifetime of fighting flying, fire-breathing enemies and being harshly punished when your op enemies always prevail. It makes so little sense that so many people would follow an obvious madman!

    My theory on how he turned evil: A dragon killed his father, who saw his son as nothing more than a waste of human for his lack of bravery around dragons. Dragon raids would still spiral out of control until a dragon would take his arm. He lost everything: His people, his father, his sanity. All he can do now to quench his thirst is to kill and abuse dragons.
    So when you think about it, he's what Hiccup would become if he became depressed

      @@matthewdoherty803 Drago probably thinks death is too merciful for dragons. When you stop and think his survival of his village was a case of cruel mercy because he's alive but he has nothing to feel grateful about being alive because they took everything his home his parents he's all alone with nothing but grief and probably in agony with a ripped off arm. Drago probably believes that dragons are merciless and the only time when they show mercy is cruel mercy after when they have taken everything else away from you they let you live just so you can suffer even more. He will make them suffer just like how they left him alive to suffer instead of actually finishing him off so he won't have to live with the pain.
      Also I think Drago let Hiccup live after Stoick's death as an act of cruel mercy since not only did he think Hiccup and the others had no way of coming after him because he takes all the dragons and ships not knowing about the baby dragons but it was also him wanting to leave Hiccup living with feeling the same grief he felt after his family was killed. He wanted Hiccup to suffer on the inside as he once did. Cuz Hiccup didn't even try showing Drago some empathy to try reasoning with him about that both of their village's were attacked by dragons only Drago actually suffered far more then Hiccup

      I don't think depressed is the right word to use. Depression is more of developing a lack of interest in doing anything, feeling hopeless or flat giving up on life. Dagur: Kills Heather's adopted parents and sacked her village before the whole twist that they're siblings. Gets forgiven and to be redeemed.
    Viggo: Tried to starve Berk to death and committed a form of biological warfare/terrorism by trying to cause an outbreak of a fatal disease which almost killed Astrid because she gets infected. Did I mention he starts of the disease by infecting his own men who all die? Gets to be redeemed (even if he does seemingly die in the process of redemption).
    Drago: Has an actual Freudian Excuse, kills a few chiefs and Stoick (who he wasn't even aiming at Stoick), is cruel to his men and wants war. HE'S EVIL AND AN IRREDEEMABLE MONSTER!
    Seriously Viggo and Dagur committed crimes which were either the same or even worse then Drago. Yet everyone is fine with Dagur and Viggo being redeemed despite their crimes but Drago doesn't even deserve a chance to be redeemed? I'm seeing double standards bullshit here!
    Note: This is referring to how a majority of the HTTYD fanbase treats Drago. Not Dreamworks themselves as Dreamworks didn't see Drago as irredeemable due to an earlier version of The Hidden World's script (which was failed to be mentioned in this video) but removed it due to it taking too long to write not because they thought Drago was too far gone and unlikeable to be redeemed and the fact that Drago was supposed to be way more complex then he looks but they rushed him and brought him into the overall story much earlier then intended due to the original script they had for HTTYD2 which involved Valka as the main antagonist while Drago was supposed to be built up as this approaching threat who wasn't supposed to physically appear into the 3rd movie as the final villain, due to them having to change the script because of an angry test audience.

    • @milicenty
      @milicenty 9 месяцев назад +1

      In regards to your statement about Dagur and Viggo there is one thing they had that Dragon didn't. The willingness to change their ways because they were proven wrong in their own experiences before the end of their respective stories.
      Dagur made amends by saving Hiccup's life, saving his fellow dragon riders, and actually caring about his village and Heather. His redemption took time and effort to flesh out because he grew to love people and dragons. He was forgiven because he proved that he was not the same evil kid he once was. Even Hiccup says he was really evil when he's introduced before Race to the Edge. Dagur doesn't even attempt or try to justify his actions. He knows what he did was messed up.
      Viggo's redemption was not all that fleshed out. What he did for Hiccup came at the end of his life. He was working with two toxic individuals who never gave him the time of day and constantly harassed him on a daily basis. The reason why he joined Hiccup again was because he was saved by the kindness of a wild Monstrous Nightmare. This changed Viggo's perspective because he never thought that dragons were just something to profit off of and hunt. He never cared for their well being until a random dragon decided he was worth saving. That's when he realized that Hiccup wasn't a fool and he was right, but he had stubbornly ignored him until he started to risk his life for him because he believes in Hiccup now. Plus he wasn't going to let Johann and Krogan get away with trying to trap him in a cave. He risked his life for the cause because he had no one else to turn to and with a changed mindset. This redemption was temporary and while Hiccup was surprised it didn't change the fact on what he did in the past and Hiccup is probably thankful for the life saving part, but he probably still holds a grudge for what he did.
      Drago on the other hand cannot be redeemed. The reason is not because of his Freudian Excuse or his tragic backstory, it is because unlike Dagur and Viggo, Drago WAS NOT WILLING TO CHANGE. He laughed at Hiccup and his efforts to befriend dragons, he killed people because they would not follow him, and he did not once think back about his actions with any guilt. Drago has no guilt, no mercy, no willingness to change his mind. That's the major differences between Viggo and Dagur. Those two were willing to look at their actions and say they were wrong, but Drago DOES NOT CARE. He is only focused on his own goals and it doesn't matter who tries to stop him, he'll use the Dark Bewilderbeest to control the dragons and destroy any foes he comes across. Hiccup tried to help him change, he tried reasoning with him and teaching Drago that dragons can be tamed, but that man is about the same age as Stoick the Vast and is outright crazy compared to him. It's not that Drago can't change it's mainly that Drago WILL NOT CHANGE. This is what made him the angry, bloodthirsty maniac he is today. He's the embodiment of Hiccup's mastery over the dragons and Stoick's hatred towards them. Drago is what Hiccup, Stoick, and Valka could've turned out like had they not decided to change their ways from their previous views on both humanity and the dragons.

    Drago is a sad and tragic example of what can happen to a child if they are born and exposed to the worst most hostile environment imaginable and if they are forced to grow up fast due to having no parents. Drago very likely has some level of PTSD which he never recovered from and taking note of how dark and sunken his eyes are indicates a lack of sleep so I bet he has insomnia or suffers from nightmares due to the physical and mental trauma he suffered. Drago saying he was left with nothing seems to imply he was the only survivor so there was nobody to take care of him so he was forced to grow up fast just so he'll live to see another sun rise. Drago probably has grown up basically not knowing how to enjoy life. For him it's just been fight and survive rise above the rest or you'll perish. Also it's worth noting Drago doesn't show off his missing limb like Hiccup or Gobber. Vikings clearly see missing limbs as something to boast about so Hiccup and Gobber don't care if their prosthetics make it obvious. Drago however his prosthetic is to hide that he's missing a limb so he appears as invincible. Because Drago is from a rather different part of the world (which Dreamworks needs to flipping clarify where) it's possible where he comes from missing limbs might be seen as a weakness and target for discrimination so people could have been assholes to him too scorning and mocking him. It's safe too assume Drago finally just snapped. Seriously how much crap do you expect a child to take before they finally snap and lose their innocence and positive view on the world? Drago killed the chiefs at the gathering because they laughed at him so he probably has been scorned and mocked in the past.
    He's basically Hiccup if his life was indeed crap. Hiccup might have been the laughing stock but he still had a village, roof over his head and one parent to look after him.
    People can cry rivers for Stoick all they want but Drago's backstory just breaks my heart in half.
    Also i'm disappointed this video mentions nothing about his intended return and development for the Hidden World.

    Drago is a 3 in 1 evil counterpart to the Haddock clan:
    -To Hiccup: Both are people who lived in fear of dragons and discovered the mechanics of taming said dragons and lost a limb due to a dragon related event. Drago lost an arm fighting a dragon, but uses a harsh boot to make the dragons submit to him and see him as their master, Hiccup lost an arm but uses a tender hand to make the dragons trust him and see him as an equal.
    -To Stoick: Both are chiefs with noteworthy hair and capes who are in command of a group of people, are deadly fighters and are tall and imposing in stature and tempers. Drago rules with fear, treats his people poorly and is willing to punish them for any misstep, Stoick rules with respect and treats his people with love and care. Drago seeks domination over others, Stoick is more content with remaining in Berk. Drago wears his cape around his prostethic arm out of a narcissistic desire to appear invincible, Stoick wears his cape in his shoulders, showing pride on his physical appearance. Drago was mourned by no one, Stoick was mourned by all his people.
    -To Valka: Both are seasoned dragon tamers in command of a huge dragon flocks, wear spear-like weapons and have a Bewilderbeast to their beck and call. Drago's bullhook is a tool for harm to dragonkin and abused his Bewilderbeast into servitude, Valka's staff is more of a shepherd's staff and emits sounds that sooth the dragons and her Bewilderbeast regards her as an equal.

    I am curious about where this information came from. I have never heard any of this until now about Drago which is weird since it's been 7 years since the movie came out and fans were finding out more information about the second movie way before the release date. Many die-hard fans comb through every inch of information about the second movie (myself being one of them) and I never heard of Drago controlling a Bewilderbeast since its birth or his army being called the Northern alliance. Also, none of Drago's backstory that was mention by Isaac was ever mentioned in the movies, tv shows, deleted scenes, or scripts. Everything about Drago has really been fan theorized and does not count as proof that any of this is true about Drago Bludvist. Nothing about his family or tribe dying at the hands of dragons. Fans only theorized this because of the information we are given about how dragons behaved from the first movie. The only thing that we can know about this villain is that he is in charge of warlords, he forces people to serve him or die, he found a Bewilderbeast sleeping grounds was able to wake it up and could control it by force (this was told within the TV series), and he hints that a dragon took his arm. Oh, and he only thought he had to deal with ONE dragon rider but then finds out there's a village and he gets super mad and moves his plans up so he can deal with it.
    Then it was never hinted at that Viggo or Ryker worked for Drago. They had their own business with dragon hunting and did not work for Drago but only for their own profit. Viggo didn't even know who Krogen's boss was, only that he was someone who Krogen feared and that was after Viggo was burned in the volcano to get the dragon eye that he began working with Krogen. For all Viggo knew was that Johann was Krogen's boss. Krogen also wanted the dragon eye so Drago could find a Bewilderbeast to take down Valka but that didn't go as plan either so it took more years to find the dragon and thus the beginning danger within HTTYD2.
    So for the long comment also. The small details that were put in this video don't sound correct and shouldn't be taken as facts.

    What we don't know, is what happened to Drago's alpha? We didn't see it die, all it did was escape in the water, with Drago hanging onto the alpha. It's speculated that Drago drowned, so that could be possible, but I do think it'd be cool for DreamWorks to make a series where Drago returns as either a changed man, or someone who's hell bent on getting revenge.
    P.s. Anyone in 2022?

    • @robonaught

      Drago's Bewilderbeast's fate was revealed in the 3rd movie. Its seen for a few seconds living in the Hidden World. How it got there even though it can't fly and the Hidden World requires flight to properly access it is another question....
      If Drago is alive they better do the former where he actually develops and learns his lesson to become a better person. Cuz return and redemption was actually the plan they had for him in The Hidden World. He was supposed to get washed up on an island home to one dragon so he had to learn and figure out how to earn it's respect and trust so he could ride it as it was his only way of getting off the island.
      I'd rather watch a series about Drago developing into a better person (and go more into his past and how he got to where he is now) then that stupid 9 Realms series.

      Also the Dreamworks website said Drago found the Bewilderbeast as a hatchling during one of his earliest conquests which we can assume is way before he even set foot in the Viking region so he totally has had that Bewilderbeast much longer.
      If anything he should have it fully grown during RTTE and he was just after the egg so he could smash it to eliminate the competition

    • @robonaught
      @robonaught 3 года назад

      As long as Drago doesn't cheat and use the Bewilderbeast i'd say 50/50.
      Shan Yu is clearly skilled in fighting with or without his sword but Drago is no pushover either cuz we flat out see him having the balls to fight Stoick in actual combat (with only 1 arm!) Valka tried smacking Drago on the head with her staff which didn't affect him at all so Shan Yu's head butt like he did to Shang won't work with Drago. Also Drago is officially 6'10 while Shan Yu's concept art reveals he's 6 and a half heads tall which would mean he's probably either 6'5 or 6'6 so Drago is actually taller then Shan Yu and has a slight height advantage. Though I think by width Shan Yu is bigger.
      Though I will say since Shan Yu's sword was able to slice through big thick wooden pillars with ease he could just chop Drago's bullhook in half or slice Drago's other remaining arm off. Also Shan Yu has claws so he could slash Drago's face or gouge his eyes even if he lost his sword.

    • @robonaught
      @robonaught 2 года назад

      Not really....
      A) Regardless of if he had control of that metal arm that arm would have most certainly drowned him cuz it's weight would have just pulled him straight down so him losing the metal arm gives him a better chance
      B) It is not impossible to swim with only 1 arm. Nothing ever points to that Drago doesn't know how to swim. This dude had probably been doing all sorts of training to his body during his "rising up" so he would be invincible which would include giving his disability of having one arm the middle finger and teach himself how to swim. Also he probably did lung excursive to expand his lung capacity so he can hold his breath for ages.
      C) He was planned to come back in the Hidden World due to getting washed up on an island that was home to one dragon and he had to learn how to gain it's trust and swallow his hate cuz the dragon was his only way off the island showing he was gonna survive his dip in the ocean.
      There is no official confirmation that Drago is dead despite his removal from THW so I say he lived and ended up on that island with the dragon.
      Cuz I hate the concept of this guy just being abruptly killed off even though he has so much potential to develop in regards to his backstory and how he grew up seeing the world as an obviously mentally broken and scarred person with PTSD who just saw his whole way of life die and had his arm ripped off when he was just an innocent child forced to grow up fast on his own just to live to see another day and with no positive role model to guide him so his sense of right and wrong is messed up.

      @zoorockf1 Drago wasn't developed well because they rushed him into the overall story (which you never seem to get the point about) and brought him in much earlier then intended. Cuz the early script of HTTYD2 Valka was the main antagonist while Drago was supposed to be mentioned as this approaching threat who was then supposed to be the 3rd movie's villain. But due to an angry test audience hating Valka being an antagonist they had to flat out rewrite the script by making Valka good and bringing Drago in earlier then intended but they obviously did a rather sloppy job at it. Even Dean DeBlois admits Drago came off as a bit flat and underdeveloped because of the changed script and has said Drago is actually more complex then he looks. His return in THW was to make up for his flat portrayal and actually show the more complex side of his character.
      Also Dagur in the TV show killed Heather's adopted parents and he got a redemption arc so I don't see how Drago doesn't deserve a redemption arc. Even if Drago does redeem himself just have it that Hiccup still cannot fully forgive him but he lets Drago leave to start a better chapter in his life because he can see he has changed and it's not right to kill somebody who has actually seen the error of his ways and is actually trying to become a better person. Drago had a horrible start in life never having any sort of normal childhood forced to grow up without any sort of positive role model to guide him. He deserves a second chance to finally have an actual normal life like he should have gotten as a child. He deserves some level of a happy ending.
      You can't just give one villain a pass and chance for a crime they committed and then go after another villain who is guilty of the same sort of crime with torches and pitch forks.

    I would actually rewrite Drago's backstory to something different. Drago lost his family, his home, and his arms not to dragons but to other humans. He learned that all humans feared and hated dragons so he would resolce to conquer and control them to unite humanity inder his heel.

      In other words: Drago is Hiccup is he used his knowledge for conquest instead of peace.

      @@robonaught I think that at first Drago did have noble intentions....and then it started degenerating. As Ragnar Lothbrok said: "Power attracts the worst and corrupts the best."

      Wish they would reshoot the movie lol I mean make Drago the primary antagonist, Grimmel as the secondary antagonist.

      @@jorgebersabe293 I think either:
      A) Drago got drunk on power
      B) Perhaps it's not just dragons that have hurt him but also people so he started to see less of the good in people believing it's not just dragons that need to be put in their place but people too. I mean Hiccup tried to see the good in people so it would make sense if Drago was the opposite and he's unable to see the good in people because people have been horrid to him. Drago could have been scorned because of his missing arm as he's not from the same culture as the Vikings so where he comes from a missing limb might be a sign of weakness and target for discrimination. Drago is supposed to be the unreasonable one but it's worth noting the chiefs weren't very reasonable either. The chiefs were all supposed to be desperate about the dragon situation which is why they were having that gathering in the first place to discuss about solving the issue. Then Drago shows up claiming he can control the very beasts thereby offering them a solution but at the cost they bow to him. What do the chiefs do? They laugh at him. These guys are supposed to be desperate for a solution about the dragons yet they laugh at the first person who claims he has power over the dragons and an actual solution? Pretty stupid move. If the chiefs had brains they could have easily been more polite and asked Drago for proof about his claim so Drago could have shown them without burning the place down. The chiefs laughing at Drago he probably thought "Screw these unreasonable idiots that scorn me, KILL THEM!" because he's probably been scorned like this one too many times in the past and it triggered him.
      As Sergei Bodrov's Mongol movie said "Do not scorn a weak cub he may become the brutal tiger"
