    Gunnhild was only 13 years old when this band was formed back in 1999 and the other band members weren't much older. They've released some fantastic albums over the years. I admit I never imagined them competing in Eurovision, but it pleases me no end to see people reacting so positively to a song inspired by a medieval poem and an ancient "kulokk".

    A lot of people weren't convinced about the song until it was performed live. And then people started screaming winner potential. Now imagine how much they can elevate the song and staging in Malmö! And the stage design will be perfect for the group! The 4 guys in each of the ends of the + and Gunhild, the lead singer, in the middle. And with the cameras spinning around, capturing the whole audience on the way... just wow!

    I´m so happy Gåte won and I loved all of yours reactions.
    For those who doesn't understand the song. The lyrics are based on Norwegian folklore from over 1000 years ago. About a girl who lost her mother when she was born and get's bewitched by her evil stepmother. Her stepmother transforms her into a wolf and the only way to break the curse is to drink her brothers blood. She finds her stepmother wandering in the woods and kills her finding out she is pregnant with her baby brother.

    • @jatojo
      @jatojo 11 месяцев назад +5

      There may be differing versions, but according to an 'official version' I've read, the girl (who must be several years old by then) knows her stepmother is pregnant and therefore ambushes her (wolves are good at that) in order to break the curse by drinking the baby brother's blood - that's a better scenario than if she didn't know about the pregnancy. By the way, it seems the brother survived.

      Yes, I am having a very hard time figuring where they end up, but regardless, I'm very proud Norway is sending this. Finally an entry singing in Norwegian, it has all the mystical Scandinavian elements, and I personally love it. It doesn't have quite the catchy singalong thing going though, so it is hard to say how it ends up. I do think the sheer quality of it, will put it anywhere from top 15, all the way to potentially win.

    Adele can probably correct me if I'm wrong, but the lyrics are inspired by a poem from the viking age, about a person that's cursed to be a wolf, but they can become human again if they drink their brothers' blood. They kill their pregnant mother, and therby drink their brothers' blood, and become human again.
    The intro and refrain is a "kulokk" from the 1800s, which was used to call catlle in for feeding time at the farms in upper Telemark (a county in Norway).
    Norway's probably not going to win with this song, but I'm guessing 8th place.

    • @PeterPanorama1
      @PeterPanorama1 11 месяцев назад +7

      She kills her evil stepmother, the one who put a spell on her in the first place. Not knowing her stepmother is pregnant, she also breaks the curse by accidentally drinking her own brother's blood when killing her. That's the horror of the story as I undestand it.

    • @pezlover1974
      @pezlover1974 11 месяцев назад +6

      Kinda right but a couple of corrections. It was her stepmother who cursed her to become a wolf. She would remain a wolf until she drinks her brother’s blood and the intention to the stepmother is that killing her brother would mean her death anyway. But then she encounters her stepmother in the forest and kills her. The stepmother is pregnant so she does in fact drink her brother’s blood and becomes a girl again. The “kulokk” (cow calling) could be found all over the country with a few regional differences but essentially the same sound) As for the story, it’s at least medieval, could be as old as the early medieval period (which is the Viking age)

    • @jatojo
      @jatojo 11 месяцев назад +2

      @@pezlover1974 The story is found outside of Norway too and is probably a common Scandinavian tale, maybe even (north) German. Btw, the girl/wolf knows that the stepmother is pregnant. That's the cool thing - that's why she (the wolf) makes that ambush.

    the song is taken from an ancient (1000 year old)norwegian medieval ballad, called "Møya i ulveham"(The girl in wolfskin). The Norwegian story exists in various versions, mainly from Telemark.[Basically, the story revolves around a young maiden being transformed into a needle, a knife and a sword by her evil stepmother. However, the people of the world appreciate both the needle, the knife and the sword. To punish the maiden even more, the stepmother transforms her into a wolf. The story ends with the stepmother staying with the child, and on the way to church the wolf pounces on her and drinks the stepmother's heart's blood. This lifts the curse, and the maiden emerges from the wolf's den.

    The song is a dark one. It tells the story about how "she" was a young girl with an evil stepmother, cuz her mother died.
    She gets sent to the king, as a tool for the stepmother. When everyone at the king's place liked her the most, the evil stepmother cursed her.
    She became a wolf, and had been sworn by her stepmother that she would walk the woods alone, never to become whole again before she had tasted her brothers blood.
    The full version of the song will tell furthermore that she in the end got to her evil stepmother, who happened to be pregnant with her unborn brother. The girl (who still was cursed as a wolf) killed the setpmother, ripped up her heart and drank the blood. That way, she got to drink her brothers blood, and the curse was lifted.
    Personally I like the band, and the song is well made. Folk music, using a norwegian instrument called "langeleik", mixed with metal (which is soooo norwegian!) :)

    Well, I'm a bit like Katie and Micael. At first listen, I wasn't impressed (not really my kind of genre) plus I'm a big KEiiNO-fan. But that all turned around after the semi. What a live performance, mindblowing!! If they can do this on the big stage in Malmö as well, this will be a potential winner.
    Interesting fact: with the 40/60 split, Gåte won by 6 points over KEiiNO. If NRK would have stuck to 50/50, KEiiNO would've won by 4 points.
    So, this is an example of how defining another voting method can be.
