  • This is my version of the haunted monster in a box. I wanted to make a frightening prop to use for our haunted forest and this definitely fit the bill.
    I saw several designs using programmable electronics and I wanted to make one that uses all AC power so I could avoid having to include expensive power supplies or high maintenance batteries.
    The box is constructed out of old pallets. The drive mechanism is a geared motor attached to a wooden cam that I cut from my band-saw.
    The motion sensor is a replacement PIR sensor designed to use for outdoor motion security lights. It's just attached directly to an outdoor electrical box and cover.
    The sound system is using the MP3 player from an out of service cellphone connected to a computer speaker system. Pretty much any cheap MP3 player and powered speaker system will work as long as they connect together with a 3.5 mm headphone jack. You don't want usb speakers.
    Thanks for watching. Enjoy!

    Mine is kind of like yours but I use a wiper motor with the cam and I put a fog machine in it. I bought a remote control outlet (Clearance item after Christmas) and keep the remote in my pocket. I trigger it when I figure people are not paying attention. I usually scare the parents as they wait on the sidewalk for their kids. Funny story was this little pirate that was very brave. He snuck under my barricade and beat the box with his plastic sword. I would stop the motion and he would turn as if he slayed the beast... did this a few times until he commanded the beast to stop! Too funny, I wish I had that on tape, his mother kept apologizing and I told her that sword couldn't damage that box. :-) That kid made my day!

    Very cool! I made one but, I used a low frequency sub woofer with a sub power amp I had lying around. I used a deep growling monster track from an old Halloween CD I have that you can feel as well as hear. I also have a sound/light organ with which I use a separate lightning soundtrack. I placed all this in a spooky dimly lit hallway with a fake translucent window on one side and the monster crate on the other. I remotely activate it when no one suspects it. I get a big jump and a scream every time!

      Funny you mentioned that. A couple years ago I used a recording of my 8 year old daughter begging to be let out. It was kinda funny but it didn't quite have the scare factor :-)

    Very nice job on this prop Justin, That was smart adding the spring to try and save your motor. Your red rope lighting piercing through the wood slats looks good. Those pallets make you work for that wood don't they? I like the way you installed the outlet inside to run everything we always have to run two power cords to each of our props with motion sensors and your way is much handier. Nice video thanks for posting!

    • @diyhauntedprops
      @diyhauntedprops  9 лет назад

      c0pyimitati0n
      I can't remember what website I downloaded the sound from. I just did a search for "monster sound effects" or something similar. I actually found that it worked better to turn the speakers on with the motion and use a loud roar sound instead of the constant snoring sound. A much more effective scare.

    • @c0pyimitati0n
      @c0pyimitati0n 9 лет назад

      Justin Young So my box i almost finished and i think it looks great. I also made my own monster sound if you would like a copy of it. I have 3 different versions. One is 1 minute long and has human screams along with chains and monster growls. I also have two 5 second clips. One is just monster growls, & chains, and the other is the same with an added human scream. I can post them to dropbox and link you if you would like.

    This is amazing! The only thing i would add to make it more realistic is a loud scary monster roar when the motion sensor activates. Perhaps have a second set of speakers that turn on with the motion sensor hooked up to a second MP3 that's looping the roar soundtrack. I think I might just have to build this haha :D thanks for the idea!

    • @diyhauntedprops
      @diyhauntedprops  9 лет назад

      You are absolutely right. When I put this prop into use, I did end up changing the sound effect to a loud monster roar and eliminated the crappy snoring sound altogether. The MP3 player loops and the speakers are now triggered on the motion. It's a much more effective scare. Thanks.

    I’m very new to everything. What are cams?
    How did you get all the wiring? Did you order specific parts or? I just don’t really understand how much of it works, how it was wired or built in general. Me and my buddy want to get into this kind of stuff too but not sure where to start.

    How does the motion sensor only keep the power on for a few seconds? Most of them are 1 min at a minimum. ??

    • @diyhauntedprops
      @diyhauntedprops  9 лет назад

      Great question! This particular sensor has a "test mode" where the sensor will switch the power on only for several seconds. For this application, the sensor is always in test mode.

  • @timschippell3417
    @timschippell3417 8 лет назад

    how did you get the switched power cut off so fast? Because most motion sensor lights stay on for at least a minute.

    • @diyhauntedprops

      The motion sensor has a demo mode which only stays on for a few seconds.

      andrew Blake I'm glad you like it. Unfortunately at this time I do not have any written blueprints. They were all in my head. Eventually when I have time I would like to make a more detailed video or maybe an instructable for this prop.

    Justin. What kind of motor did you use and how did u connect it to the sensor

    • @diyhauntedprops
      @diyhauntedprops  9 лет назад

      Freddie Mendoza I really wish I had more information about the motor. There is no nameplate or numbers on it. I've had it in my stash of parts for years. You may check with Granger and search for AC gear motor. As far as the wiring, it's a little difficult to describe without a diagram, but the main power cord provides the power directly to the sensor and half of the receptacle. The switched wire of the sensor gets wired to the other receptacle that the power strip plugs into. It's difficult to tell in the video, but there are actually 2 (taped together) cables connecting the sensor to the outlet. One providing power to the sensor and one sending the switched wire back to the outlet. I hope that helps.

      Freddie Mendoza Also, if you want some better pictures, here is an instructable I created for this prop: www.instructables.com/id/Monster-in-a-Box-Haunted-House-Halloween-Prop/

    I've started to make this, I've finished the box but I don't know how to connect the sensor to a light and motor. Any help?

    • @diyhauntedprops
      @diyhauntedprops  8 лет назад +1

      Here is a link to an instructable I published about this last year. There is a little more detail there. I should have drawn up a schematic for the electrical though. www.instructables.com/id/Monster-in-a-Box-Haunted-House-Halloween-Prop/Basically the power cord coming into the box gets wired directly to power up the PIR sensor and either the top or bottom receptacle (make sure you break the metal tab connecting the top and bottom receptacles).The sensor switching wire is then wired to the other receptacle so one receptacle will be switched on with the sensor and the other will be on all the time. The power strip then gets plugged into the switched receptacle to run the motor, lights, speakers, fog machine, etc.If you are using the same sensor that I am using, it will need to be put in demo mode which switches everything on for only 5 seconds.I hope this helps. I have been considering re-creating this video with more detail, just haven't had time to do it yet.

    Hi, about the sound, are you try to trigger on the sound or the sound is always on?

    • @diyhauntedprops
      @diyhauntedprops  8 лет назад

      +THAM ZHI YUEN In this video the sound is always on. However, since making the video, I found it works much better to have a loud monster roaring sound effect playing all the time on the MP3 player and then trigger the powered speakers with the motion sensor. Doing this really adds to the overall scare factor for the prop.

    • @tzyuen
      @tzyuen 8 лет назад

      +Justin Young Hi, which mean that the powered speakers is trigger by motion sensor but not always on? I though the powered speaker is always playing the sound.

    • @diyhauntedprops
      @diyhauntedprops  8 лет назад

      THAM ZHI YUEN You can have the speakers on all the time (as shown in this video) or just have the mp3 player constantly looping the same track all the time and have the power to the speakers turn on with the motion sensor.

    • @tzyuen
      @tzyuen 8 лет назад

      +Justin Young Hi, if turn on speaker with the motion sensor by relay? or write a simple coding to turn it on?

    • @diyhauntedprops
      @diyhauntedprops  8 лет назад

      THAM ZHI YUEN I didn't use any relays or special programming. The motion sensor is 120vac for an outdoor security light. It turns on a power strip. The motor, lights and speakers are plugged into the power strip. Maybe this will help: www.instructables.com/id/Monster-in-a-Box-Haunted-House-Halloween-Prop/
