It was announced that Lou was late, but Ian & the Blockheads would keep playing until Lou was available. They played their hearts out, and they must have played Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll 3 times as Ian apologized to the audience for the band repeating their songs. Ian and the Blockheads won over every person in attendance that night! Then Lou and his band play this magnificent show. Since 1978, I had a bootleg of this show. I must have listened to this over 1000 times. That cassette is long gone, so it's nice to hear this concern again. I wish the Ian Dury part of that night would surface on RUclips. It was my all-time favorite night of live music.

They recorded every one of the "take no prisoners" shows so there are hours of recordings in brilliant binaural and even never released songs with this band🤯 Come on Rhino, do a box set!!

This is by far the best LR performance I’ve found so far; the music is super tight, but not over blown; the songs are like a best of ‘70s collection; Lou is in great form, actually hitting most of his lines, not parodying his own lyrics as he frequently does. Just beautiful.

I put Lou Reed in the company of Dylan and Leonard Cohen, but unlike those two, there’s a fair amount of Reed’s output I shudder to listen to.

He just blows as a singer live--way too mannered and awkward, rushed, out of tune, refusing to sing the melody, horrible timing--Just Awful. And I'm a lifelong Velvets fan.

As someone just sort of discovering Lou Reed beyond the "hits" I have to say Street Hassle is one hell of a fucking tune. That bass line is so simple yet so amazing.
yes Lou ( rip ) said there is 4 chords we think sweet jane is 3 but a hidden fourth. i prefer perfect day to wild side it is the same bass rhythym drums just four notes anyway lou was just lou ( rip )
yes Street Hassle the studio version the monologue is the Boss apparently born in the USA is related Springsteen it has to be the same 4 chords. Sweet Sweet jane the same 3 and a half chords.
This must be the best band in the Universe ever. Too bad it did not last longer. I think last songs they recorded was "My name is Mok" and "Triumph" with Lou Reed. And "America".

I had seen Lou a few years earlier when he performed at the Rainbow in London, during his 1974 tour. There is a video of his performance in Paris, during this year. As in London, he has bleached hair and wears his trademark dark shades - an image perfectly captured on the cover of Sally Can't Dance. I felt so proud to be there, witnessing the coolest act in town with a black girlfriend to give me extra street cred: how cool is that!
I was at the show and I seem to remember an idiot in the audience that had painted track marks on his forearms and had a guitar coming up on stage pretending to be Lou and having the security taken out anyway it was an amazing concert and Lou seem to handle the distraction really well😊

best live lou reed era 1978-1980 hands down. the growing up in public album isnt that great but the tour and band is still amazing. anyway this has some strong alt versions of the take no prisoners tracks and great fidelity. i wonder if they recorded all these shows binaurally.
I have the 'Take No Prisoners' live album, obviously the same band, TNP is my absolute live Lou or at least neck in neck with 'Rock N Roll N Animal'. Soundwise this is very good, a soundboard recording I assume? Anyway, this one is a must-have, not only because of the whole punk ethos this exemplifies (Lou Would probably cringe at the comparison ) of those heady times, but for the fact, this has some cracking songs, not on Prisoners. I'm listening to Leave me Alone as I'm writing this, and this one goes into some crazy free form, Jazzy jam. So you have these songs not on Prisoners: 'Gimme Gimme Some Good Times'-Dirt'-'Rock N Roll', and he actually sings 'Walk On The Wild Side' instead of taking the piss out of the song while rapping about how the song came to be. R.I.P. Lou Reed-genius, Rock N Roll poet.
This Chicago concert was recorded about a month before the Take No Prisoners shows. The TNP dates took place toward the end of Lou's USA tour. Perhaps by that time Lou had had enough of being on the road , and, back home in NYC, he could chill out a little bit. Hence the TNP shows contain those rambling and funny monologues. But this Chicago show is arguably a better showcase of the raw power that Lou and his band were capable of unleashing onstage.
I like every live of Lou Reed and all songs of "Street Hassle" and liquid air (Don Cherry : cornet trompet of Ornette Coleman who've played with him) on I wanna be black (more of boneheads talked to his "racism" a part of people are dosen't understand the push-humor

My goodness this band is blaring! High energy overload, one of the best live shows I ever heard by Reed- leaves Rock N Roll Animal in the dust.
