Before Daemon was in charge, being a member of the city watch was seen as as bad as joining the Night's Watch, but with worse weapons and army. Daemon gave them pride, armed them like soldiers, and gave them their own uniforms. Even Daemon's detractors claim he's probably the best Lord Commander they ever had.
Taking the black and joining the wall was a respectable honor amongst 2nd sons. The 1st son was the heir and held the highest of honor amongst their house. The 2nd son was just as honorable and would show it buy protecting the people of Westeros. It’s why Jon Snow chose the black.
@pvthurley Actually, I believe that would be 3rd sons because 2nd sons still have a chance to inherit if the firstborn dies, thus making them more valuable in marriage alliances.

@@SantomPhthe gold cloaks never betrayed Ned. The Gold Cloaks where loyal to Littlefinger. No Littlefinger did betray Ned but the City watch where just doing what they were paid to do.
@@BrawnyStreamNo they were loyal to the highest bidder and the side they thought was going to win. Like any standing army in a medieval setting they basically functioned like a mercenary company. It's easy to see the winner of the battle when it's 6 dragons to 0. The City watch is supposed to keep the king's peace and they blatantly disregarded the king's command and his protector of the realm Ned Stark.
@@BrawnyStreamDude that posted just before ke has the way of it, the king's, Robert Baratheon, decree was that Ned Stark would ascend from Hand of the King to Regent. He wasbto rule the realm until his son became and could take the throne, which was still years away. The King/King's Regent nominates and selects the Commander of the City Watch. A placeholder of sorts, or ,more accurately, a representation of the King's will and desires, acting on the King's commands while holding the everyday task of maintaining peace in the city.
Littlefinger and the City Watch were all aware of the letter from the king, the king's desire for Ned to take the throne, and the fact that turning on Ned was synonymous with treason to crown and king. If they had any doubt, when Barristan Selmy announced the letter was amidst the King's letterhead, in the King's hand, and completed with the King's seal. Coming from Barristan Selmy, the greatest sword for generations, the Lord Commander of the King's Guard, and known to be one of the most noble and honest men in the Seven Kingdoms, this fact is beyond reproach.
The Gold Cloaks were treasonous, backstabbing, treacherous traitors.
Daemon literally cleaned the city overnight by cutting off the hands of thieves, beheading the murderers and castrating the rapists.

Otto was really an asshole, ha? He looked down on these knights yet he advised that they should put Daemon in command. No wonder Daemon hated him so much, the man tried to humiliate him with this position. This is how highly Otto take himself compared to Daemon who was that time the ‘rightful heir of the throne’. Arrogant as hell. I bet he regreted this later 😂
to be fair to Otto, Daemon was a force of chaos who used his status like a club. Even if it was for political reasons and for selfish reasons ,Otto sending him away to the Vale and then the Watch kept him away from his impressionable brother Viserys and out of trouble. Daemon could have been the first Daemon Blackfyre (who is named after him) despite his protestations of loyalty. He also sired two sons to Viserys' three so a parallel branch of the line would have been a threat to Otto's ambitions.

I kinda hate how they portrayed Daemon in the show as more of a Villain, in the books his straight up an Anti-Hero, his Morality is Gray while Rhaenyra turns into more of a monster in the books.

Good point tho.
Daemon's actions are far from heroic at times, though his valor in combat is not to be questioned. He was also an excellent commander of the Goldcloaks, despite the rise in executions and amputations under his watch.
Daemon is an agent of chaos , hence his name Rogue Prince. He loves his family but cannot settle, even with Rhaeneyra ,and has several affairs. If Viserys had no sign of the madness of the Targaryens Daemon was lurching that way. Rhaeneyra ,without Daemon becomes a ruler without a conscience or good advice and ultimately creates chaos herself by inaction.

Otto got a brutal lesson in respect and loyalty, never underestimate or write off the love and loyalty that is inspired in men, when you give them a purpose that they can be proud of for the rest of their lives.
Daemon Targaryen was such an enormous character in the books. Very calculating and slow to strike but makes a major impact when he does.
He never looked down on them and raised them to a position of respect, ppl don't forget something like that.
Daemon is actually a real bleeding heart and the way he interacted with the gold cloaks is one great example. I think people will really overlook this quality because of how roguish he can be and how in certain situations he seems to be willing to do anything - but nuance IS there and I think that’s part of what makes his character so exciting for me.
George just couldn't make Daemon any cooler lmao 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Dude got the streets as well
Can't wait to see Daemon on Caraxes and Rhaenyra on Syrax when they take King's Landing.
Daemon had them disciplined , the attitude of Sir Harrold shows their loyalty in episode nine
Daemon the man that keeps his promises
Prince of the City for a reason
Very smart on Daemon’s part. Keep 5000 warriors on your side so that all you need do is arrive and they turn back to him, after being sleepers and spies for him in his absence. Reward a man who doesn’t expect it, and he’s yours through respect.
During the Dance of the Dragons, the Goldcloaks are the 501st of King's Landing and Daemon Targaryen was their Darth Vader. They were his armored fist.
_Beautiful analogy._ 👌
I don't think it's a matter of the Lords looking down on them, rather that they weren't impressed with their work, considering the rate of crime was still high. Even Corlys, a VERY high Lord himself, gives them credit when due, after they've scared the criminal element.
Corlys's appreciation was after Daemon's involvement dude. Before Daemon, the Gold Cloaks didn't have enough power to do stuffs like that to begin with lol... Hence why...

If I was a in A Song of Ice and Fire's world the last familes I would make a deal with would be literally any family from the Reach, maybe the Tarlys at a stretch but the entire kingdom is covered in beautiful flowers covered in deadly thorns.
the Reach have both the strongest single army of knights and men at arms , a navy to rival the royal fleet and the wealth to provide for them. It would be folly to ignore them.
it's worth noting that several Reach houses actually sided against the greens, including House Tarly and House Beesbury, while House Peake kept on sponsoring rebellions well into Maekar's reign (three generations after HoTD).
Oddly enough, apart from Blackwater Bay anyone who sides with the Reach tends to lose.
Daemon is an oddly good leader let's be honest.
Deamon is a good general. However good generals are not always good kings. We saw this with Robert
I suppose that's the greatest strength and weakness of the Gold Cloaks

the goldcloaks are supposed to be the law enforcement of King's Landing and obeying only the king and his Master of Laws. It always depends on who the ruler is, and who their Hand is. Tyrion led them in the defense of King's Landing during Blackwater and by all accounts they did well. Janos Slynt however allowed them to rot from the inside due to his own corruption.

I really hope that they keep this in the series, because that would be brilliant to see!! they do mention the city watch when discussing aegons traitorous succession to the throne. I think Otto mentioned that they replaced the captains that were still loyal to daemon. So it’ll be interesting to see if they take it out or not 🤔

I once had a good boss like this.. it's hard to forgot what he did for me.. I was so young.. n he helped me a lot
The north should learn.. how to actually "remember"...😂
I would love to see a moment in the show that mirrors the Gold Cloaks scene in season 01 of GoT, except reversed. They build it up that it seems like the Gold Cloaks have been bought and paid for, only for that last minute swerve to show it was loyalty this time around that wins the day. It’d be a cool parallel.
Daemon really deserved be all the time near his brother. Not that snake Otto.
I mean if they betrayed the greens when Daemon arrived on a dragon, that doesn't prove their loyalty. They could be sympathetic towards him, but I guess any man would switch sides when there is a dragon present. It would be better if in the books or show, they resisted the coronation of Aegon or at least desert their posts when coronation started.
They did - at the Coronation, they tried to close the doors and trap the Greens in the dragon pit with the mob of smallfolk, Meleys and Rhaenys. Let the chaos do the killing
Promises are worthless. Only actions matter.
Turncloaks!
Prince Daemon gave us these cloaks. And they're gold no matter how you turn them.
Daemon knew how to treat his loyal soldiers.
I love When says “YOU ARE A PACK OF HOUNDs”!
Daemon would have been such a successful king. Rules by fear but not sadistic, good to the ones serving him and with loyal followers
That’s definitely not true he was violent, undiplomatic, perverse and had little to no self control these are horrible traits for a king to have.
@@jaijoerik6233 True. But unlike a certain golden haired child king, Daemon had at least some redeeming qualities. 😅
That kind of loyalty is so rare in real life, whether back when it was medieval times like house of dragons is all the way up to the modern times we live in.
You can say a lot about daemon. But that first scene with him and his gold cloaks is utterly incredible and I love watching it.
