  • Short conversation that I recorded and wrote in the Louisiana Creole language, a.k.a. Kouri-Vini. This is my first Scratch project and my first attempt at coding a conversation between two characters. Scratch is an easy-to-use, block-based visual programming language used to help facilitate creativity and reasoning skills through learning of the fundamental principles of coding and programming. Although it is mainly aimed to help young people, Scratch is also a great resource for adults who are interested in getting into programming. To view my creation on Scratch, click here:

Kouri-Vini is a French-based creole language spoken in parts of rural South Louisiana. It is closely related to Louisiana French (sometimes called Cajun French), but its grammar is very different, making it a separate language. Like French in Louisiana, Creole is also spoken by people of various races and ethnicities. Whether a person in Louisiana speaks Creole or French is determined by where in the state they are from rather than by the color of their skin. In both cases, there are many people like me out there trying to preserve and promote the daily use of Louisiana's heritage languages.
Music: "Morning Mood" by Edvard Grieg (1867)
Art: sprites and backdrop found in Scratch library
