@@thatbirdguy9845 3 months too late, but yeah, you need an electronic screwdriver set or a shitty ratchet precision screwdriver like mine. Point is that the 4 grooves of the Philips format are less than half a milimeter OR 1/3 of 1/16th of an inch in thickness. Just tiny as hell, so a larger screwdriver will theoretically work because the opening of the grooves is > 0.5 mm (on top), but that's a shallow contact depth and so your screwdriver prolly just blunted the grooves at the top section and then only very fine screwdrivers can get these remaining screws out.

When disassembling your controller, I would recommend using a plastic card instead of a Flathead screwdriver to prevent damaging the plastic. It's also good to give it a good clean with some rubbing alcohol and compressed air while you're in there to get out any gamer gunk™. Also, if your battery is a generic Li-ion battery and not a hard shell plastic one or there's no PlayStation logo printed on the the circuit board then it's probably fake.
I had an issue with the analog stick seizing. Your video was perfect even for the second gen controller. Was able fix my issue. I will say, much easier than opening the Xbox one controller, though Sony tends to be better manufactured components, in my opinion.

I just recently bought a 1TB PS4 in October, and the controller that came with the console I'm already experiencing drift on the left stick. So this video helped me out, thank you.
I came here after I bought two new controllers, but still felt like I can maybe fix the first one, which I got with my ps4. There are two problems: 1. Left analog, usually used for moving around, isn’t working properly, you can tilt it in all directions, but nothing happens if you push it forward left diagonally if that makes sense. You have to really work it with small movements to get your character to move diagonally upwards left. 2. Pushing L2 causes also moving forward. This one is especially irritating when playing FPS games, but also non FPS like Overcooked as well as just writing stuff. Over the year of using this broken ass controller I kinda got used to all its flaws and I still win games with it! Now I’m halfway through taking it apart, and I’m not really sure if I can fix these problems here, I’m trying to just clean every single part as much as I can and hope for the best cause if I start working around with the cables or motherboard I worry I might break something. If anyone has an idea how to fix these two problems I have, let me know!
this was super helpful! I was afraid to snap a piece while taking my controller apart, and this gave me confidence that I was not about to irreversibly fuck up my equipment.
Followed this tutorial to try and deal with some drift. The tutorial worked great and I pulled it apart and put it back together without problems, I pulled out piles of cat hair. Didn’t fix the drift, but good job on the tutorial. 👍
Turned out the rubber thingy under the D-pad was my problem. As I was taking it apart you mentioned things about customs which made me look for a cheap copy blue controller I had laying around as a donor. so I did this for a third-party one I haven't been using because I'm hoping to be able to customise them. so I found your video very helpful. Obviously the third party one wasn't completely same but I got the gist of it... now to customise and put back together. Thank you
Well... I managed to rip the battery clean off the board while trying to unclip it.. fml 😂😂
6 years later, still helping people out!!! Thanks
I'm stuck at removing the screws, they're very hard that my hand was hurting for a day trying to unscrew them. I'm weak
Actual Idiot the screws are sooo tiny
@@umayrhussain3211 if it takes that long you may have stripped the screw trying to use a knife or the wrong size screw driver. Use the right tool for the job and it's waaaay easier
Do they sell a PlayStation screw specific screwdriver lol?
@@enflow8440 my pops had some a lot of tools so I'm just lucky
@@Prymistic no lie as soon as I posted this I looked on line and bought on. Specific size is 00 x 50 phillips
My dog ate the thumb sticks on my sons PS4 controller. $5 for new thumb sticks on Amazon and your video saved my $59. Thank you!
This is why I do these videos!!!
a controller is only 59? for me its 70 bucks
Dude i've already dented parts of my controller, trying to take the outer plastic apart. He makes it look so easy
So... I was trouble making my controller work after tearing it down so I came to this video. After doing absolutely nothing my controller started working again... i guess your video saved my controller 😂
When i took mine apart to clean the circle button i had to unplug the touch pad ribbon cable it was a pain in the butt to get out but putting it back in was easy good video this helped a lot
How did you get that out I'm stuck😭
Thanks you! Works for me. For anyone who wants to try this, don't use too much force to open the housing or you'll end up breaking the plastic holders. Good luck
Alright but how do you even get the thing apart?! I tried an old card I didn’t use, a flathead screwdriver, and a pry tool. Lol
Use your nails
Try a hammer
I don’t know but throwing it on the ground seemed to work for me
Try every screw driver in ur house or google
It sure u can find it somewhere iunow
I used a putty knife but the damn controller is so flimsy I almost cracked the shell unhooking the latches
Bro my controller was having some real right analog issues not drifting but like it had a stutter I had an idea of the issue I needed to disassemble it and clean out that area I seriously appreciate this video all the info was easy to digest you just saved me 60 bucks
Did it work ? How did you clean it ? I'm having the same problem as you
He just took the two pieces apart and I feel like I’m gonna break it!! ;-;
Ok so I one night at 2am had an idea to paint my controller and the console itself. I didn’t know how to take it apart so I found this video, I took it apart and paint the bottom shell and the buttons. After I finished painting I put it back together but what surprised me is that I didn’t look up anything on how to put it back together, it only took me an hour and it actually works and looks nice. And it was my first time too.
Thank you for helping me feel like a strong independent woman who can take apart her own controller and everything!
you depended on this video for help. you are not independent.
@@TravisBlack god forbid you were ever taught anything
@@TravisBlack and in case you feel all warm and fuzzy inside for tearing me down I have to tell you that you failed
@@trinerasmussen7099 was just me being silly my dude, wasn't trying to "tear you down" haha
Thanks for the tutorial. Gets right into it which I like. No 5 minute long intro talking about nothing.
If anyone is having trouble with the battery the best method for me is to just pull and wiggle and eventually it will come out
Ty that worked for me!
I had issues with a joystick that was just refusing to be pushed to the right. This helped get right down to the issue. I am grateful.
so I spilled some syrup in my triangle and O buttons( somehow ) and had to get my buttons unstuck. I could've brute forced this thing apart. And prolly broke something. Thanks for walking me through this the right way. Sexy voice btw
Next time you eat pancakes, Dont try to use your controller as a fork!! lol!
Im really happy I was able to help you get it taken apart and cleaned up!
Hope to see more of you around!
Me and my sexy voice are putting up videos everyday!!!
What size phillips screwdriver do i need
I have a set. I think the one i used was a quarter inch maybe one size below it. if you've put together any kind of furniture, chances are you got one laying around somewhere already
size 0 screwdriver works best
@@Drumblanket Great video. Mine turned out great except 1 thing was the bottom half was a touch darker shade than the top (obviously I did all 1 colour) is there something I can do different to avoid that?
Thank you. My son thought there was a spider on his PS4 controller so he threw it and one of the thumb knob came out. I was about to throw it in the trash and buy him a new one. I came upon your video and was able to take it apart and install that knob again. Thank you again for your video.
😂😂😂😂
Bro, you just helped me save my Spidey controller! All I needed to know was if there was a screw under the barcode on the back plate. Once you showed there was wasn't, i dived straight in 😂 appreciated! I have videos too if you ever want to check them out 😄
Please. Give a tip to remove the battery cable. Please. Inform others to bend the blue plastic of the ribbon cable for the touch pad inside the hole for it to go through. Remove the music. This is just the start :(
So, couldn’t get the 2 little springs back on but controller is working fine 🤷🏼♀️. Not really sure how they were on to start with.
TiffTaff ToeBoe no, they were little metal springs.
Best ps4 controller disassembly guide ever! The others were so useless glad I found this so my X-button isn't sticky anymore!
Great video! Thank you for making it quick with no BS and easy steps.
Straight and to the point. No bullshit, no fucking 10 minute Intro, no "pls like 5000 times and subscribe ".
Thx for that
Murrant Diller just happy to help!
Thanks for being quick and concise. You earned a sub from me.
There he is! where you been man!?!
CorcGaming took a break and did a lot of thinking about where to go with this channel. I'll be doing a news video soon.
I had an issue with the analog stick seizing. Your video was perfect even for the second gen controller. Was able fix my issue. I will say, much easier than opening the Xbox one controller, though Sony tends to be better manufactured components, in my opinion.
Couldn't find a flathead screwdriver but I fixed my controller! PS I have no fingernails left😅
Vanessa Medina happy I could help!!!
Drumblanket Thumbs up👍🏽
You didn't use your nails. The screws are tiny. You wouldn't get you nails in those tiny slots.

Hello, I really want to thank you for this video. Happens to me that my cat jump on table and split juice on my PS4 controller. Everything works perfectely, only buttons were sometimes stuck when I use them. So I want to try to fix it by myself and thanks to your video I can repair it back. Because of this, I do not need to buy a new one. Thank you!
You are very welcome!!! Im happy I was able to help you fix your controller!
I’m tryna hydro dip one and I suck at taping everything so I’m watching this
Way ahead of ya, on subscribing.
Right after "We're just gonna get straight into the tutorial, no long intro, no nonsense..." I would probably be subbing
I wish you would have showed us how to put it back together
Ironic that your name is Every Need...

its not hard use your head

Awesome video! I accidentally spilled water and my control kept pressing start by itself and searched up on RUclips and luckily found your video and I was able to open up my controller and dried up the water that was inside and now it's fixed! Thanks!
ayyy ur back!
LOOK AT ME GO!!!
Do not put a screwdriver between L1/L2 or R1/R2 as he does at 0:57. If you get that slightly wrong, you can cut the circuits there. I broke my controller doing that.
Love you so much you fix my controller ❤❤💖💖💝
Thanks you saved my life with this video i accidentaly pulled the L3 Joystick out of my friends controller. Now i could put it back❤
how do i readjust my R3 button? it keeps on going upwards and i dont even be touching it.
L3*
SAME BROOOO
Did you fix it?
Me too it’s really annoying
These have got to be one of the most pain in the ass controllers to break down and clean. I've done it with PS1/2/3 and all revisions of the Xbox. Even handhelds. The PS4 controller took the longest and the most patience for me.
I can't get the frigging screws out they're so tight??
Same bruh
I was trying to take them out by spinning clock-wize but then tried spinning counter-clock-wise and It worked lol. Maybe the same happened to you.
@@lucasrv2630 appreciate the tip but I know which way screws undo lmao
I took a pair of pliers to grip the screw driver to get a strong grip for stronger torque for getting the initial twists

Thank you for keeping this short! It was a great help, my 6 year old had some waffles and played LEGO Jurassic World so there was some syrup gumming up the works, I was able to take the controller apart and clean out the holes and re assemble in about 15 minutes!!! Saved 46$!!! AWESOME!

My niece and nephew spilled soda on one of my controllers so I had to open it up to clean the buttons. This helped so much. thanks, man!
My sprint button (left thumbstick) wasn’t sprinting so I wanted to find out what was wrong with it. I got it open but then I noticed that both thumb sticks are WAY to complicated for me to screw with.
All you have to do is spray some wd40 on it
Yo, Here’s a tip if you don’t have the right tool just use the tiny screwdriver from a TecDeck Kit? 2 years late
Honestly I'm just going to buy a new one. Lol
I'll buy your old one for 20
Thanks for this, I have 4 broken ps4 controllers mostly with different issues and managed to get 1 working from using others for parts, appreciate it 🙏

Thank you so much for showing us this video. I bought a used PS4 Pro and the controller was so Gunked up with dirt and god knows that the buttons were sticking and it could t be used.
After this video I was able to pull it apart and clean it, now the controller is like new👍
Putting it back together is nigh impossible...
I just recently bought a 1TB PS4 in October, and the controller that came with the console I'm already experiencing drift on the left stick. So this video helped me out, thank you.
Thanks for the tutorial bro, bought a preowned ps4 from a store, and the previous owner was clearly a smoker. Thing was filthy so needed a good clean.
I came here after I bought two new controllers, but still felt like I can maybe fix the first one, which I got with my ps4. There are two problems:
Thank you for making this tutorial. It helped me and my 6 year old repair a faulty joy stick.
Turned out the rubber thingy under the D-pad was my problem. As I was taking it apart you mentioned things about customs which made me look for a cheap copy blue controller I had laying around as a donor.
Now I have a working original black sony controller with blue top case, looks good with the blue light bar.
Many thanks 👍
