So many great books on this list! I’ve only read Heads of the Colored People but it was on your recommendation and it was so good. I may not get to many new releases but I rely you on you to keep me up to date with what’s new and worth reading Russell!
Thank you Jo! I am so glad you loved Heads of the Colored People... I think it was just amazing. Backlist books were all new releases at one time or another ;-)
I have so many new wishlist books after watching this video! I've read Home Fire & Conversations With Friends already. Really looking forward to Normal People. There are some I haven't heard of that I'm going to read following this video. Great watch.
Ohhh what a lovely list. The Silence of The Girls is my boyfriend’s favourite book of the year! So he’s pestering me to read that🙈 Self Portrait With Boy sounds fascinating. Sounds like it would tick a lot of boxes for me. I received Normal People for Christmas! I’m so excited for it. I’m sure I’m going to love it as much as everyone else. Hope the new year treats you well, Russell!😊
Adding Putney to my TBR. Just received my copy of Normal People and I'm so pumped for it! Still have to read Conversations with friends and the Great Believers. Great list, glad you had a good reading year! Here's to 2019!! 🥂
Wow. What a fantastic selection. I recently got my copy of Normal People and cannot wait to start it. No One Can Pronounce My Name and Red Clocks are going into the cart as we speak. I always look forward to your videos and cannot wait to see what treasures you find next!
I have just been book shopping and whilst waiting for my bookstore to open one morning, I discovered a discount book warehouse / type of store nearby. I went in and came out with Circe, Home Fire, and Red Clocks for a very low price, so I am super excited to read them now. Also, have just finished reading normal people and so after watching this video, I immediately downloaded "Conversations with friends" to my kindle. Nothing stopping me now! Thanks Russell!
I agree with Red Clocks. Brilliant. Strike your Heart and Home fire -- right on. Glad you featured Conversations with Friends together with Normal People, as I loved the first better than the latter! I must read The Great Believers. Thanks & Happy New Year, Russell 🎉🎊🎉
What a lovely way to wake up here in europe!! Thanks, lovely boy. I’ve been massively slacking on commenting, but I hope you know how much I watch 💚 I am really liking Normal People (did you know Sally Rooney’s 27?!!!!) and you know how much I loved So Lucky too!! So many here I’d like to get to!! The Great Believers is definitely in my top as well. Iiiiiincredible. Here’s to another amazing year of reading in 2019!!!
Also, “slightly different future...like tomorrow” makes me want to laugh and cry at the same time. I think I said dystopian when I reviewed it, but I hear you - it’s not really dystopian in the slightest.
Thanks for your suggestions, so many sound good. I will give Self Portrait With A Boy , Putney and Normal People a try. On a side note, your suggested reading of Yoko Ogawa was great (i was properly haunted). Also, I was at a 2nd hand store the other day and found Conversations with May Sarton 😄 she spoke in an interview about the structure and idea behind "As We Are Now," it was so nice to know I knew what she was talking about because of your suggestion 😂 Thanks, Happy New Year!
I read the first chapter of normal people and really liked it. I've just added conversations with friends to my TBR. Thanks for the recommendations Russel. Happy new year!
Love your channel. Love your list. I will definitely check out Red Clocks. I loved Normal People but was a bit underwhelmed with Conversations with Friends. I have to admit I'm shocked that Ohio didn't make this list. That was one of my favorites and learned about it through your channel. Happy New Year, Russell
Wonderful picks Russell, Normal People was such a satisfying novel, don't have the words to describe how attached I got to the main characters. They gave me all different emotions of love, frustration, sadness etc. This is what an extraordinary book would do. I feel the same too, I think Normal People should have been the pick for Manbooker 2018. Not being shortlisted was such a disappointment. Have you read "Educated"? This was another favorite of mine of 2018. Happy new year to you
I loved seeing your top books. Glad to see some of your favorites that you have been talking about on this list. I am now VERY excited to read NORMAL PEOPLE. (As if I wasn’t already. 😄) Great list of books. Happy new year, friend!
I’m glad you clarified that Red Clocks is not dystopian/science fiction because those are automatic turn offs for me. Must try now, thanks and happy new year to you, your hubby, and fur babies?
Just finished Normal People (buddy read with Chris!) and I'm STILL thinking about it. I will read anything she chooses to publish. Couldn't agree more with your comments!
Just finished reading The Heads of Colored People and loved it. But my best book of 2018 was Ohio. It was your recommendation and i thank you fir that,
In 2019 seek out The Regeneration triology by Pat Barker. Particularly Ghost Road. Happy New Year Russell☘️🎉👋🍀 I'd also advise Milkman by Anna Burns ( on audio) I'm pushing more Irish writing your way. Below is a list of my best books read in last 2 months. The Italian Teacher by Tom Rachman An Unremarkable Body by Elisa Lodato Unsheltered by Barbara Kingsolver The Overstory by Richard Powers Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate ( based on true events) The Darkness by Ragnar Jonasson Dark Pines by Will Dean A Bridge of Clay by Markus Zusak ( on audio for lovely Aussie accent)
So Lucky was excellent and I don't think it got enough attention this year. I went to a reading Nicola Griffith did from this book and was so impressed with the reading and her as a person. Also Jacqueline Woodson is everything
Have you ever read ‘Unaccustomed Earth’? I read it years ago and still think about it now and then. Just curious your opinion if you’ve read it. Thanks!
Is it me or a lot of reviewers now at days really get going with books either on women, or for women, or by women,… or all of these?. I cannot help wondering if threre is now a line between good reader judgement and current idiology groupthink. I want to find very good books not the "currently correct" ones.
I think the reason for the trend is that the world is no longer androcentric and publishers can promote books that either ignore or offend the male perspective without financial repercussions.

I fully support the purchase of all three of those books. They are all amazing.I can talk about all three for ages.

I haven't heard about several of these books and they sound great! Thanks for new books to add to my growing TBR in the new year :D

i'm deligted you went with 18 books...i don't see that as indecisive at all...happy new year russell.
While it wasn’t my favourite book of the year I did enjoy Harbour Me. Thanks for a year of great recommendations!!

It is so good right! I loved it. My friend is reading it and I keep telling him how great it is.
Cool list.

Positively surprised to see Amelie on the list. Her family name is pronounced ''Noton'' .
