    First posted in March 2010, this review is a re-edited version that loses 2m 5s from it's original running time. This is one of the most extensively recut videos, tightening up the pacing and has numerous cuts to reduce the amount of movie footage featured. (Some of the abrupt cuts were in the original edit of this episode.) In addition, the first part of the movie's history has been completely redone because the original version simply used extended clips from X-Men and X2 (a big no-no, and visually dull), and the audio of the film clips has been significantly boosted.
    I know I said before I wouldn't re-post episodes by Fox, but I'm going to use this one to see what happens, given the new film coming out. If it suddenly disappears, you know what happened.

      What's the point of removing clips, it won't stop the video from being flagged?

    • @FilmBrain
      @FilmBrain  7 лет назад +16

      It does. It certainly causes less hassle at the upload stage because it doesn't get detected, and many won't go after it if it doesn't. Yeah, sure, there's manual searches, but it helps. Also, it tightens up the pacing of the video, so it's as good an excuse as any. None of the clips are outright removed, they're just shortened, so a shot there, some frames here, and so on.

    It's interesting to watch this review in hindsight of the recent X-Men films. Without "X-Men Origins", we wouldn't have "Deadpool" the way as it is (Or "Days of Future Past", for that matter). Without "Deadpool" the way it is, "Logan" probably never would have happened. While "X-Men Origins" is, by far, the worst X-Men film to date, it was ultimately a necessary evil for the greater good of the franchise!

      This film 'X-men origins' is a fascinating one, it's extremely polarising.

  • @FilmBrain

    I should clear up one long-standing complaint, since I saw this one keep popping up on the unofficial version: yes, I am aware that bone claws came from the comics. However, they were not in the film universe previously, and the first X-Men movie implied they had been grafted onto Logan's body during the procedure, it was not something he was born with. Bone claws themselves were an addition made to the comics during the 90s, so it's understandable why the 2000 film a few years later didn't include them.
    The other point, however, is even as a piece of comics fidelity, I think the idea is silly, mostly because if you grafted metal onto them, they wouldn't look like thin knife-like blades, they'd look like... well, bone-shaped metal. So it creates a glaring logic hole on top of the continuity one in the films. It seems this is the one addition this film made that stuck with all the films afterward, since they also appeared in The Wolverine and Days of Future Past, despite this film being retcon'd out of existence by the latter. Obviously, 2010 Mathew wasn't to know this.

    • @shizuwolf

      Also how would his bones and claws be so polished have you ever seen an actual black smith at work. I watched Man at Arms and there's a lot of work in make blades you can't just coat something in metal and turn it into a knife.

      the bone claws came in a comic after the first x-men movie specifically made for lore for the movie if they did make a wolverine origin story. the comic was called "Origins" and its actually pretty fucking good.

    • @grayscribe2125
      @grayscribe2125 7 лет назад

      Actually the bone claws were indirectly introduced in 1993 in Marvel Comics Presents #72-84 which was reprinted in the Weapon X paperback. The funny thing is, they kidnap him for the Weapon X program and never do an X-ray of him. They only notice that something is wrong when the machines pour more adamantium into his hands as planned. The reveal of the claws was... brrr...
      They never explain the shape of the claws in the comic, but still show how they clear paths so unsheathing them would not hurt too much.
      Great comics with great art and stories.

    • @Xehanort10

    • @lnsflare1
      @lnsflare1 3 года назад +2

      In all fairness, A) the comics spent decades intimating that Sabertooth and Logan had been father and son while his memory was still scrambled, B) the extremely dissapointing comic revelation about Logan's past had his half-brother Dog look pretty much exactly like a young Sabertooth and I don't know if the revelation that he DIDN'T eventually grow up to become Victor Creed had been made at the time of this movie, and C) them being brothers was less dumb than Wolverine's half-brother just somehow looking exactly like a completely unrelated guy that has the exact same powers as Wolverine and who becomes obsessed with Wolverine decades later.

    To be fair, the comics has the inconsistency about the claws, as well. For a couple decades, they were referred to as bionic implants. The "Weapon X" storyline made mention of an unusual amount of Adamantium going to his hands, but that was all they mentioned.
    Then they did a storyline where Magneto rips the Adamantium out of Wolverine and in the next issue, we learn they were bone all along, but even Wolverine and people who knew him when he was younger, never knew it. Problem is the bone claws were portrayed as considerably thicker and rounder than the blade-like Adamantium ones ever were.

    This film takes place during the late 70's, according to the fashion along with the tech in the movie and Scott Summers looks to be, in Hollywood terms, about 15 (because in hack writing land Teenagers in High School are always 15 lol).
    So just say for easiness sake, lets say the movie takes place in 1975, so Summers is 15 and he was born in 1960.
    So in 2000, when the first X-Men movie was made, Summers is around 40?
    Also Scott Summers has special Rose Quartz lenses in his glasses, that just look like red tinted sunglasses and those were made especially for him by Professor Xavier. to stop his "Concussive Blast" eye beams from destroying everything he looks at, normal sunglasses would do absolutely nothing.
    Just like the problems with continuity between all the X-Universe movies the timeline doesn't make sense.
    Agent Zero is basically a rip off Domino, in the movie, her power is the ability to manipulate probability (luck), her powers allow all of the bullets fired by her to have 100% accuracy practically all of the time and the ability to avoid being hit/injured.
    In the comics Agent Zero, formerly named Maverick, was German not Asian and his powers were the ability to absorb kinetic energy.
    For example he can survive falls from great heights and other hits that would normally turn a human into paste. He was also an expert marksman with practically all weaponry (possibly Marvels version of DC's Deadshot with a mutant power)
    In this movie Agent Zero's powers seem to be literally copied from "Domino".
    To be honest Wade Wilson, before he became "Dudpool" in the movie, his powers are also somewhat copies of Domino's as well. As both Agent Zero and Wade Wilson seem to be have extreme accuracy as their power set.

    I should mention that Tom Rothman's micromanagement style of running 20th Century Fox seems to be the main reason why Rupert Murdoch sold the studio to Disney. With all of the decisions that Film Brain mentioned here as well as his failed attempt to take over Time Warner, lack of support for digital streaming platforms, and aforementioned micromangement style that caused lots of great filmmakers to bail, is it any wonder that Rupert Murdoch wanted to sell the studio?

    So after this review and the movies you mentioned: The Magneto origin movie became X-Men First Class and the X-Men Origins series was killed after this one film, The Wolverine and Logan came out with both being VASTLY superior to this, Deadpool's movie was extremely faithful, respectful, and successful to the point where it has two sequels, one of which comes out in 4 days and is a part of the MCU, we got a nice sendoff to the original movie timeline with Days of Future Past, a decent movie with X-Men Apocalypse (don't hit me I actually liked it), and then a shitty rushed movie with Dark Phoenix before Fox was bought by Disney and thus Marvel owns the X-Men film rights again, but they released one final movie with The New Mutants before this year releasing a continuation of the 90s cartoon

I liked this movie more than the trilogy. possibly because it focused on Wolverine perhaps because I was never a big X-Men fan (did like the '90s show) and I had no idea who or what Deadpool is. aside from a background in Mortal Kombat II of course. What would it be like to watch it today? hmm...

    It's kinda interesting you make that correlation because Ryan Reynolds stunt double in this movie IS darth maul . So they ripped it off even more so than what you stated.

    • @FilmBrain
      @FilmBrain  7 лет назад

      Weapon XI's not played by Ray Park, it's Scott Adkins, who has gone on to be a direct-to-video action star in this own right, top-lining the later Universal Soldier films among many other things.

    • @Ash-op2ql
      @Ash-op2ql 7 лет назад

      Sorry, I checked and you are correct. I had heard it was ray park but I was misinformed.

    • @FilmBrain
      @FilmBrain  7 лет назад

      The fact I didn't highlight Adkins is one of those things I wish I caught in retrospect, but he wasn't quite as known when I made this. It's a bit like the times I didn't really point out Chris Pratt or Kevin Hart in some reviews from around this time.

    To be honest, the amnesia bullets make sense. In the real world, sharp diamonds are used to cut other diamonds. So, an adamantium bullet would penetrate adamantium.
    Also, if he has a healing factor able to regenerate tissue and organ parts, it would make sense for his brain to regrow after a shot to the head, but his memories growing back would make no sense. It would be like regrowing a tatoo.
    Granted, the amnesia bullets make sense but the rest of the film doesn't.

    X-Men Origins: Wolverine is 15 years old!
    It didn't get the best reception from fans and critics despite making $373 million worldwide
    My late dad still liked Wolverine
    I remember he said the guy on channel 9 on tv said the movie wasn't good during the first half, but at the second half it got better and by the last half it was the best part
    It sucks this was deemed by fans and critics to be one of the worst X-Men films in the collection
    Hugh Jackman's 4th time as Wolverine with him being a producer as well, yet it would be affected by a leaked unfinished cut online before it came out
    Yes, I know it’s full of cliches, bad effects, and makes the continuity inconsistent
    Ryan Reynolds had a short part in this movie as Deadpool but the creators really screwed up adapting him in so many ways it was angering especially towards the climax
    Some might call this a bad Steven Segal movie and Gavin Hood's direction with the script really could use some polishing
    It stinks this is so short too
    But my dad and I still liked the character, the performances, and the action sequences
    I’d rather they give us answers to why he joined the Weapon X program and how he lost his memory rather than no answers at all
    I really still like Hugh Jackman as Wolverine next to Danny Houston as William Stryker and I also don't mind Liev Schreiber as Victor/Sabertooth (he brings more personality than what Tyler Mane did)
    Taylor Kitsch doesn't do a bad job as Gambit either, he practically steals the movie
    Lynn Collins does what she can with the portion of time she has as Kayla Silverfox
    And the score by Harry Gregson-Williams is intense
    The whole thing comes across like a dumb anime or cartoon, to be honest none of that really bothered me cause I just took that as the tone of the film
    Let's face it; there are a lot of people out there who really love this character and there are still nods in this to several other comic storylines
    Thankfully it wouldn't be the last time Jackman would be playing him even after admitting he wasn't happy with the final product and the video game itself is 10x better being more violent since the character itself is more tailored to it
    I'm thankful more movies happened afterwards
    I just imagine it'll be hard to find a replacement with the current state of the MCU having the X-Men now joining the ranks

    So if Victor WANTED the bonding process, why didn't they give it to him first? For that matter, Wolverine and Sabertooth have pretty much the same powers, so why did they need Wolverine for Deadpool at all. If anything, Sabertooth has always been shown to be a little stronger than Wolverine.

    I know this is an old review, but just a friendly correction... Wolverine is not indestructible. He's just really difficult to kill and recovers very quickly. Indestructible would be someone like Superman who's legitimately nigh invulnerable to virtually all forms of physical harm.

    The claws in the first 3 movies ARE in no way mechanical. They, granted, did a poor job of explaining this, but the adamantium only coated his bones. If the bones were mechanical there would be more of mechanism displayed in the X-ray. However what is quite visible, his bones. His METAL coated bones. If there was a launching system of some sort, they'd show up in the X-ray too.

    The cyclops thing is inacurate the "blast" you refer to is due to him shutting his eyes or using stuff like special lenses that block the beams. In the first movie it even shows it: In the cartoon in the comics it also states it one of the cartoons goes as far with it saying it is him not being able to fully control his powers due to how he has psionic powers that protect him and control the beams. They don't call it heat vision because the origin of where they are suppose to come from but work the same way and basically project nonstop

    • @FilmBrain
