As another reactor once said if he'd been there and was describing it at work the next day - "I went to a concert last night and at the end they crucified the lead singer on stage while 10,000 of us jumped up and down chanting Death Death Death" friend: "Who did you see, some Norwegian death metal band?" "No, BABYMETAL - and now my brain doesn't work!" That is without mentioning (what looks like but with Japanese facial features, so probably isn't ... although they did start the concert with 'Ave Maria') the Virgin Mary statue behind her being decapitated This was the moment we all realised and fully accepted that a Japanese girl celebrating her 16th birthday and her two 14 year old friends are far more 'metal' than any of us ever were or will ever be.
⚡ 💀 💕 / 💀 💀 💀 I've told this story before, but I saw BABYMETAL open for Korn & Stone Sour in Chula Vista, CA back in 2017. The concert was on Yui's Birthday (June 20th). There were devoted Korn fans on either side of me, who were expecting something called BABYMETAL to be pretty mellow. They opened with 'BABYMETAL Death'. The look of shock was worth the price of admission by itself. : ) BTW, the song title and lyrics are a play on words in Japanese. The full title is 'BABYMETAL Death' (BABYMETAL is part of the song title.) The word "desu" which can mean "I am" or "We are" is pronounced "des", which can sound like "death", especially if you stick your tongue out a bit when you say it. So when they say "Su-metal Death!, Yuimetal Death!, Moametal Death!, BABYMETAL Death!", it also means "I am Su-metal, I am Yuimetal, I am Moametal, We are BABYMETAL". This song has usually been a show opener, but for the 'Legend 1997' concert, it was the last song of a five song encore with the live Kami Band.
"I am Su-Metal. I am YuiMetal. I am MoaMetal. We are BABYMETAL!" Hi Michael! Good reaction! "Legend 1997" was Su's 16th birthday show, she was born in 1997. Yui and Moa were born in 1999 and there was a "Legend 1999" celebrating their birthdays as well. There's also been a "Legend - S" and a "Legend - M" for Su and Moa's respective 20th birthdays played in their hometowns. There would have been a "Legend - Y" however Yui had to leave the group in 2018 due to unspecified health reasons. "BABYMETAL - DEATH" is really a play on words in Japanese. When a native Japanese speaker says the English word "death" it sounds like the Japanese word "desu" (u is silent) which means "is/am/are". This was generally their opener as a way to introduce the band to the audience and get them hyped up, however here it was a closer with the sacrificing of Su-Metal to be reborn as a metal goddess. There's a lot of nods to Metallica here, which the girls have often said is their favorite metal band. The opening guitar riff is like Metallica's "One", and the Mother Mary statue is a nod to Metallica's "And Justice for All" Lady Justice statue.
BABYMETAL - Ijime,Dame,Zettai - Live at Sonisphere 2014,UK (OFFICIAL) ruclips.net/video/Ro-_cbfdrYE/видео.html IDZ is always great live but this was at their first big concert in Europe. They were supposed to play on a side stage but the promoters heard them and moved them to a main stage. Played before 30,000 brits who had mostly never heard of them. This was their finale.
"ready" or |not ready" ? LOL, some people were probably having a laugh. :-) Her "death" was so she would be reborn as a goddess of metal. Obviously, the kind of thing you do casually like it's nothing LOL. In Japanese manga it's common to use rebirth as a way to symbolize a new phase in life. Anyway, best sweet 16 party ever ! Babymetal is a lot of fun, which is why it's fun watching reaction videos.
This has been their intro song until 2018. Only for a few performances it was moved to the end to allow for a crucifixion. :-) It always makes me smile when I imagine people going to the show of that Japanese girl-band for the first time, expecting Pop music with some mild hardrock influences, and then being greeted by this song. :-)
10:12 - Great to hear you say that - it's the sort of comments they deserve. When People ask if Babymetal are 'really' Metal, I tell them that Babymetal crucified their lead singer live on stage as her 16th birthday treat while 10,000 fans screamed "Death! Death! Death!" and a statue of the virgin mary crumbled behind her and that, yes, they are pretty fucking Metal. The lyrics are simple - they spell out B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L and then shout out what sounds like 'Death' but is the Japanese form of 'to be', or I/You/They are' - Desu. So, the lyrics are "I am Babymetal" and, er, that's it. Babymetal often like to play on Japanese words that sound like something in English. As the word Desu has a silent 'u' and the 's' is spoken with the tongue between the teeth, it sounds like 'Death'. And that's that explained! Amazingly, this was the opening track to their 1st album - what an intro (though here it was done at the end of a performance as it was Su's 16th birthday!
Great reaction!! Thanks!!!! I'm so glad you considered my suggestion! It's so much fun watching a first reaction to this particular performance of BABYMETAL Death. And yes, few things are more "metal" than this!
I do not freaking know what I did on my 16th birthday. Suzuka will know it for sure for the rest of her life, I guess. I own the Blu-Ray they released from this show and I say the whole show was beyond epic! Rick already told you some general things about this song, so I will add some details regarding this particular performance: The show "Legend 1997 SU-METAL Seitansei" ("Legend 1997 SU-METAL Holy Birthday") not only was the 16th birthday celebration show for Suzuka Nakamoto. It also marked the transition of BABYMETAL from a mere side-project of Sakura Gakuin (Cherry Blossom Academy) to a band in its own right. And this was done with a lot of symbolism. For instance, the show kicked off with a special dubstep remix-version of "Headbanger!" with Suzuka very obviously lipsyncing to symbolize the pop-idol she was before and with the music completely coming from tape. "BABYMETAL DEATH" on the contrary, ended the show including the crucifixion of the former idol Suzuka Nakamoto and her rebirth as the metal goddess SU-METAL while incorporating real musicians playing the music.
11:20 - Keep on headbanging! And what better way to start than with Babymetal's 'Headbanger' live! - ruclips.net/video/YjjWZpf_jSs/видео.html . Epicness multiplied and Su shows her Death Stare at least twice. You will fucking love it!
It's funny you should react to this one today. I was driving to and from the London show yesterday and listening to a lot of Babymetal, like you do. I started thinking about the track list from this first album. So people had probably heard Doki Doki Morning, lots of pop with some heavy backing, and they may have heard iine, lots of everything, and then they probably saw Gimme Chocolate, heavy with cutesy, poppy vocals. So these same people go out and buy the album, or their kids pestered them to buy it, and this is what they get for the first track, Death. Virtually no vocals and THAT music. It made me smile thinking about it anyway. Anyway, nice reaction and you know you can follow all the recommendations you are given by all the knowledgeable folk on here. Keep it up.
I think it's safe to say that with BABYMETAL you're never truly "ready" for the next song :) The usual rule of thumb is to expect the unexpected. With that said, I think you're definitely at a point where you don't have to worry too much about which song to do or in what order. BABYMETAL is an experience. We'll try to suggest the best performances so just pick a song/performance and enjoy the ride. We'll be riding along with you. \v/
Really great to see your reactions to one of the best bands in the world (and I've seen Zeppelin, Floyd, Sabbath, Underworld and many other world class bands over my 58 years!). You're clearly happy falling down the Fox Hole at Mach 7 so looking forward to watching the rest of your journey. You'll always have thousands of views, likes and comments (99.9% positive too, because Babymetal fans are so fucking lovely!) reacting to Babymetal. 4:30 - We're all happy to bow to/sacrifice ourselves for/worship/etc our Metal Queen Su. Same goes for Princess Moa, Angel of Love and owner of the best smile ever. But we're not a cult! Though some more conservatve types might well question that after watching tyhis performance. Try the iconic performance at Sonisphere in 2014 - ruclips.net/video/Ro-_cbfdrYE/видео.html . Kitsune up! as Su always says at the end of concerts (kitsune=fox=the fox hand symbol).8:37 - They are always fucking epic but this was just a bit more epic than normal. Could see you loved it so that's the main thing - some get scared! :) Another epic performance is Headbanger - ruclips.net/video/YjjWZpf_jSs/видео.html
It is... BABYMETAL! Concerning this performance, I always like to point out how careful Yui and Moa are about Su's hair while they put on the neckbrace. Very considerate metal minions, those two. :D
Been binge watching all of your BM reactions over the past couple days and having a blast watching you fall down the foxhole like I did. If you're ready for another super heavy track to go along with an insane performance, check out 'CATCH ME IF YOU CAN - Live (Makuhari Messe)' ruclips.net/video/VANhYO1TLno/видео.html. Gotta love a song about playing hide and seek with a flesh-eating ogre!
Let me tell you a secret: this song is in one of my playlist along with Nine Inch Nails, Tool, Marilyn Manson, RATM, Deftones, Jinjer, Slipknot, well you know what I mean...
The statue falling is a tribute to Metallica who had the same thing in a concert back in the days. BABYMETAL has lots of metal heads behind them so they know all about metal :)
this is the birthday present Su-Metal got from YuiMetal & MoaMetal. they decided it's better to crucified her in front of the crowds & have the crew to filmed the process so all the fans & people around the world (especially the haters) can see how they celebrated Suzuka 16th birthday & witnessing the reborn of the Queen Su-Metal. but keep it in mind, this is definitely not a cult,..LoL
Only those people say it who watched gimme chocolate as their first song from bm and formed an opinion...... Pathetic..😑 Today's metalheads don't give enough time to a particular band...😔
4:30 ..... “you know what I mean.....” Yeah, man. We know what you mean. 😀 You must have nerves of steel to withstand BABYMETAL DEATH this early in your foxhole journey. Mad props, good sir. The Fox God has bestowed his blessing upon you.
I strongly think that they wrote this song for those people who just keep saying all day all night ' baby metal ain't metal ' 😎 And this is one of favourites....😊 Amazing reaction sir...!!
