Going by the photos from the 1980 Olympia I still like Mentzer's physique the most. To me his physique looked the hardest. Amazing what steds can do though given Arnold came in a late notice.
I think even Mike admits that he was off that show due to some behind the scenes issues with water retention. But in his words, he was happy with anyone winning but Arnold that day. The long and short of it is, Arnold didn't follow protocol or procedure for entering that contest in the first place. Regardless of how he looked, he shouldn't have even been there. In the end, he was a shadow of his former self and the stink followed him for years after
Quick correction for Jamie. The 1.6g/kg of bodyweight is what the science is currently saying maximizes hypertrophy, so he's right. But the conversion to g/lbs was off. 1.6g/kg converts to ~0.73g/lb. Anyway, hope you guys do more of these! This conversation was great!
Hey there! I'm about to order the powerlifting pack and dive in (from Jamie's website), but I''m also considering getting the Feast, Famine, and Ferocity book. My question is, I read all of the original articles on plague of strength, is there a ton of new helpful information in the book that is not in the articles, or would my money be better spent on bite-sized history or one of the others like juggeryoke or biceptual protocol? Thanks in advance! I'm a huge fan of both of you guys and learned a whole bunch.
I always felt the 6 meals a day was seen as a practical approach for some that got blown out of proportion. Basically guys were trying to eat enough food and fit it around their day, so they ate more often. Then some one took that and made it gospel.
It's interesting because Franco and Arnold were surprised at the meal frequency in the US coming from Europe. They were initially 2-3 meals per day. Arnold had a notoriously low appetite. Once MRPs and protein pulsing became linked to marketing it was like stated, the new gospel

Where did Jamie come up with the idea that people were living off of savory oatmeal and beans and couldnt get meat year round? I can tell you it was the opposit we could always hunt, and though tedius we could even fish. But we couldnt raise crops year round. And as far as bodybuilding contest in the 60s and 70s I can only say that everyone I knew considerd the IFBB Mr O the top contest of the time. Not Dan Lurie,s contest or the NABA universe. The Mr America was considered almost like a beginers introduction to larger compition.
There's a good reason why hunter-gatherers converted to farming when they could: food surplus on far less land. To be able to support any number of people by hunting for food required vast tracks of land. Furthermore, hunting isn't easy work at all. It's far from a consistent meal. Beans and grains are far more consistent ways to get calories and their shelf life is far longer. As for the IFBB, Jamie's right. The IFBB didn't really become the premier contest to win in bodybuilding until the late-70's. Regardless of who actually started the IFBB, it appears it was started as an alternative to the AAU Mr America contest in the 1940's. So, clearly, the Mr America had somre status amongst lifters than you're giving it credit.
Jamie certainly does not pull his punches. I would agree that Serge Nubret could infact beat Arnold. He waa sabotaged in the 1975 Olympia. He arrived to compete and had trained to win. If you see pictues of him in that shape he was a definite threat to Arnold. He was sidelined and lost muscle after being told he could not compete.Later a deflated Nubret was allowed to compete. Arnold was in great shape but the final would be more controversial with an in shape and bigger Nubret.
Absolutely. It would have derailed the whole production if Serge was a legitimate threat, which he looked to be, because the whole charade would've been captured plainly on camera minus the obfuscation of Weider's literal and figurative airbrush
So much nonsense in this interview. Your solo stuff is great, and I get you don’t like Arnold but you’re letting that cloud any sense of objectivity. Roger Walker and non Arnold judges had Chris Dickerson for the win.
That was the consensus even among most Aussies. I think Roger Walker looked great that year too
