I was at an Elton John concert in Norway when Watford was promoted to top level. Elton got the message during the concert and it transformed in to a 3 hour party 🙂
Today I was telling my wife how Elton John grew up near me and then this comes on. Grew up in south oxhey and went school near hatch end, everyone knew about Elton growing up in Pinner. Peter Andre to
@@dannoscfcYes he is. Whats your problem. Working class kid who became one of the greatest artists of his generation. Massive star. Has given hundreds of millions to HIV/AIDS through his foundation.
I'm another Pinner boy, lifelong Watford fan. Great to hear Sir Elton's still enjoying football, and suffering along with the rest of us recently... True legend of music and the game.
I used to play for Barclays Bank 9's (progressed to 6's as the club shrank) at Eailng next to the North Korean embasy - often the ball went over the fence into the garden - the side gate was usually unlocked and we just went in and got it!
Proper football fan. Some other club owners should watch this interview and see what owning a club is really about. Nice mention of chesterfield too.up the spireites 🔵⚪
My Dad was an Elton John fan and he got me into his music back in the 70's. Dad was also a Watford fan. He told me of the time he wen to Watford with my Grandad and there was a Pat Jennings playing in goal for Watford. My dad said to My Grandad, he won't be here long. I have many fond memories of my Dad and I going to watch Watford. I'd always gee him up to go when they were playing Ipswich as that's my team. More often than not, we got stuffed. We walk back to a pub near the train station, have a couple of pints and go home. Elton John put Watford on the radar and appointing Graham Taylor was a stroke of genius.
My dentist plays the RUclips pod in his waiting room. It really does have a calming effect! Concentrating on the content takes your mind off the sound of the drill 😂😂
I’ve always been worried about going to the dentist’s, until one new dentist was always playing UB40 (a band i love) on a stereo in the corner. Instantly put me at ease, I know it’s different, but also a similar effect
In the 90’s Elton was recording something at Teddington Studios, down the road from where we lived. My friend’s Dad was a technician/engineer at the studios and he made a frantic call home to say, ‘Elton John might be coming over to watch the Watford game on Sky.’ as there was nowhere else to watch it. In the end he found somewhere else to watch it, but my god, for that half an hour we were buzzing! (Good thing too, as my mate’s house was a bit of a hovel (despite having Sky). 😅)
In the early 90s, we used to ride our bikes over to Watford to go to the wave pool... best memories. I recall the newsagents at the end of the lane had a giant inflatable banana hanging from the ceiling that said Watford on it.
It's a boyhood dream for any man to buy their local club that they watched as a kid Elton is living that dream if you like his music or not you have to respect that.
There’s a heartwarming story in Elton’s autobiography from early Watford owner days and at height of his fame. On one away game, he drank all the expensive liquor from the other Chairman’s office. People weren’t happy, and Elton got told off like a naughty schoolboy by Graham Taylor. Essentially, he was able to be a diva and do what he wanted everywhere else, but at Watford he was kept grounded and in check.
Whilst not a music fan of EJ, I listened to the audiobook of his autobiography. The stories and details re Watford period are great as are some of the 70s and 80s rock n roll stuff. Some great stories and definitely on the old list of a bloke you’d want to have a pint with
John barnes played for sudbury Stuart pearce played for stonebridge Paul merson grew up in harlesden Luther blisset went to my high school Cyril regis went to my brothers school North west london had alot of good players who grew up there. Alot of them would of been drawn to elton johns watford in those years. Amazing what times elton john had at watford during the 1980s, a good team they had back then. Another one of my brothers went to the school where grange hill was first filmed
Pedants corner with that "Horse whisperer" story: They mention it wasn't a good season and Bilic was sacked soon after but also says it was at Upton Park. It could be genuine confusion but we'd moved to the Stratford bowl by then (Bilic's second season) and his first season was the last one at UP, which was actually a pretty good season, except the last month or so.
On the smoking off topic, topic.....I worked in the Hospitality industry when the smoking ban came in so saw both sides of it. It's actually crazy thinking it was allowed back then when you look back now but I remember turning the lights on after a wedding function etc. and the top half of the room would just be thick with smoke. Used to come home absolutely stinking of smoke too and as a non smoker always wondered how many cigarettes I passively smoked!
200 minimum. I moved seats several times in France this summer outside on terraces due to smoke being blown in my direction. I know it is allowed outside but I still think it is so anti social. Thank goodness have never smoked. It is still much more prevalent in France than the UK. As for obesity, that was an eye opener. France has lost the plot with the fast food. No more the thin nation of the past.
Great content why don’t you get Robert plant on to talk all wolves in the 70s I went to see a testimonial gig at the civic hall Wolverhampton it was for David wood field who had been a great servant at wolves then he moved to Watford it was rumoured that Elton John would make an appearance which he did he came on the stage to thank the people in attendance and to our delight a piano was wheeled on Elton said he would sing his hits with the piano being the only musical instrument on stage I’ve never forgotten this he was magnificent
Something about the way those West Ham stories are written says to me it's Gary Firmager aka OLAS boss - the former editor/owner of the Over Land and Sea fanzine.
Big respect for Sir Elton, but im not sure him giving the team talk for the 84 cup final would have changed much. That Everton team was a great side who would the next season be champions. (From a liverpool fan).
not sure he's quite on the money about young players in the xi there are so many it's impossible to put them all in key is to go out on loan against mature players, develops their game enormously

A true football fan, good on him.
Awesome interview. I was at an Elton John concert in 2022 at Vicorage Road. Front row. The energy was phenomenal. You could feel his love for Watford
Looking at him, you wouldn’t think he’d be a multi million record selling pop star! Legend.
Came across very humble on this.
Crazy guest to have. There's pretty much no bigger star you could get. EJ is absolute legend.
what a guest, love the passion he has for football, national hero ❤

He’s definitely not a national hero

Global hero. Got to watch him live 4 years ago in Thailand. Rocked the concert for 3.5 hrs non-stop. Legend
Awesome interview. Elton is not just an owner, but a true fan.
How Roque Santa Cruz has missed out on the Christmas XI I do not know. He's been waiting his whole career for the call up and he's out. Disgusting...

Brave. The barbers round the corner offering Kim haircuts received a visit from the embassy who were not pleased.

Lovely chat. I had the pleasure of knowing Elton back in the 80s. Genuinely nice guy

Brilliant, honestly, listening to Elton, I realise that, in many ways, he is just like us…..but with extraordinary talent

This is true
Elton is a legend. He did football ownership the romantic way too. Take a club down the divisions and make them into a top side.
