I be thinking craigslist and scooping up a used kart and instead of taking all the time to build use all that time and go to the local kart track watching the young one learn how to drive, race, learn about apex and lines and all the do's and don'ts .
My granddad made a wodden car for me, with babycarriage wheel and a steering wheel from an old consul, I also wanted a motor on it but it never happened... Granddad, u were the best...

My father built a go-cart for my two brothers and me back in 1956. We wore out the asphalt driving on the street on a circle route. City roads. Oh the freedom that came with wheels! Very nice build for your son and daughter. I'm 70 years old now and I still haven't forgotten my father's love of machines and our love for that go-cart, his "love on wheels" for us. Your son and daughter will too (entertain a love for machines, the go-cart and their father). Thanks for sharing; thanks for building!

Initially, I hadn't planned on watching the complete videos, #1-2-3-4, the more I watched the more interested I became, mind you, my youngest Son is 40 years old with his own kids. This might make a pretty nice project for him and me to do for his kids. I'm very impressed with your prowess in machine shop procedures. In 1966 when I was a young boy in CT. we had a visitor to our metal shop class. He had a twin McCullough chainsaw motors and 4 wheel disk brake go-kart. It was a beast. I was hooked. You did a fine job building this sled. Congratulations.
Some people are made to be parents and some are not. You are probably one of the best parents I've seen in recent years. What I really like is you build the things your kids wants or to make their childhood fun, this teaches your kids that hard work is what gets the things they want as an adult and not to take for granted the nice things they have. It creates a unique situation where you can give your kids things without them ever gaining an elitist attitude. Plus I respect the hell out of people who can make the things they intend to make and can create it from their imagination and creativity. You are a better father than I was and trust me that is not an easy thing to admit, I just wish I had the same level of interest as you have when I was younger. I kind of gained that in my late 20's and now 2 years from 40 I can say this type of work is really fun.

You are an amazing Dad. In raising kids, you get one opportunity, there are no do overs and I cannot imagine your kids wanting it any other way. They are quite fortunate to have you. I ran go carts when I was a kid back in the 60s. We had basically 2 types, sprint carts such as yours and enduro carts where you were more laying down with a butterfly steering wheel between your legs and 2 gas tanks, one on each side of you. And..... we ran chainsaw motors, McCullough to be exact. Very high revving, could be clutches as you have or direct drive for more serious stuff. Old Tillotson carburetors. And your kids are out in the air, not sitting at some electronics console staring blankly at a TV screen. They will thank you later in life.
My Grandfather built me a relatively simple push powered wooden cart when I was about 5 or 6? but with "real" (a wheel) steering - all of the other kids had rope. I loved that thing beyond belief! Above all you've built memories for your kids that will last them forever.
Awesome build. Looks like a blast. Your TIG, Millwork, Lathe, & Fab, and CNC skills are awesome. To fab without a frame jig is very difficult! Keep the awesome videos & projects coming. Maybe cut where the frame is sleeved and make the frame longer. Make the seat a bench seat with a seat frame that's adjustable. This should accomodate your daughter & son. Make a cover on the front floor pan to protect rack & pinion from sneaker laces.

GOD DAMN - I thought I was a cool Dad when I got my daughter a Barbie Jeep from WalMart!!! This man is obviously the Greek God of design, welding and fabrication!!! I’m a “better than average” DIY’er and I’ve renovated most of my house & built a huge, 2 level, custom deck around our pool. Everyone compliments me on how good my work comes out (they’re obviously correct!), but this gentleman makes me feel like I’m playing with Lincoln Logs an Erector Set and Tinker Toys!! Genius level mastery - I’m in awe!!!! Your children are mire lucky than they’ll probably realize until they grow older!!

Just wanted tell you how much I enjoyed this build video, the second time. As a young boy I was obsessed with go carts, bb guns, and mini bikes. I never had them, but back then you'd just have to find someone who did. I really enjoyed seeing your mental process. Another thing that changed from way back then was that being a fabricator was not a compliment. Usually followed by a hiding, and lengthy retreat to my room to reflect on my misdeeds. Thanks so much. When I was probably about your son's age, I came up with the idea of attaching the chainsaw that we didn't use to my radio flyer wagon. My dad didn't seem totally opposed but needless to say it never happened. My young self never considered brakes or that the handle that was used to steer it probably wasn't going to manage the steering too well. This was awesome to see and a sort of childhood dream realized. Your son and daughter are lucky to have you as a father!
Drop tire pressure very slightly, like 5-10%. I use an infrared temp gun on tires. Measure across the tread, look at inside, center, and outside after driving a few minutes. Measuring temp then compensating alignment and tire pressure works incredibly well for tire life!
Mr. Tony, I'm just 21 years old right now, but honestly, if and when I do have kids, I want to be a father like you. Honestly, I love machining and building "things" so if could do that, and also make some of the most important people in my life as happy as your kids, I'd be just as happy. Downhill here, too. We used our feet to steer the 2x4 front axle. Somebody got the idea to put a rope on it. We had to drive it into the brush to get it to stop.
Growing up, my dad built me a go cart. We had a couple, and a few dirt bikes. Mine didn’t look quite as good as that one did but I’m 28 now. I still remember those days like it was yesterday. You did a great job and your kids will cherish this! Nicely done.

Hey Tony, I know here in the states that we have standardized utility-trailer tires. Usually they come like 8" or 12" and they also come with the wheel too. I know you are more knowledgeable than me; however, thought I would mention that. I have purchased them at tractor supply and they have excellent durability. You might also have those retreaded if they offer that there.
I got sucked in after seeing part 1. I ended up watching the complete build and I think I was smiling the whole time! I can only imagine what this means for your kids and the lifelong memories you will share with them. You sir, are quite possibly the coolest Dad on RUclips.

I had a small pocket bike that I took the engine off and started cutting up my son's pedal go-kart to put it on. Long story sure it's the same engine you're using and even though it didn't come out and eighth of his good as oh, your videos still gave me some great ideas and pointed me in the right direction. Pretty small thing to be impressed by but the swivel socket U-joint blew my mind. Great job please whatever you do don't stop

My day bought me a used go kart as a kid... I couldn't wait to drive it. Only thing was it had gears and a clutch for a 7 year old it was too much, I think Xmas day was the only day I ever sat in it with the engine running. I like wanted to grow up so I could drive it ! Now I look back with different eyes. ToT..keep doing what you do it's great. I hope your son Masters some of the skills you have. The world needs more Logical and practical people.. All I can say is WOW ! I'm impressed . All the work you went through to make this series and the cart itself. When I was 14 years old(many moons ago) I build a go cart using mostly parts from an old 60's era snowmobile . It was all done in my parents basement with a hacksaw and a 110 stick welder. It worked great.Now when I look back I'm amazed it even worked at all but it did.
Not to scare you,Tony! But I have a suggestion, based on persona (real-life) experience: Try to get a shoulder belt onto this. My go kart had a lap belt, which was good.... and it had a roll cage, which was good... and when I drove straight into a tree, the lap belt kept my waist secured. That meant my head snapped forward and I smashed my face into the padded steering wheel, which broke my nose and introduced two decades of sinus problems.
that is why you wear helmet and preferably neck support and if you really want to safe - a rib guard while riding these, that is safer than a seat belt and roll cages, because stiff - non shock absorbing structures, rigid seating and tight belts introduce problems and risks of their own, there are quite a few design problems when designing "safety cell", and making everything very rigid and tight is actually bad, think about this way - if you didn't have the belt at all in your accident, you would have hit the steering wheel with your rib cage while also absorbing some of your bodies kinetic energy with your legs, and there would be very little chance of your nose hitting anything - damage would still be done, but it wouldn't be concentrated at the head area - which is pretty much the worst part of the body to use to absorb impacts for a human as I've said times before in this series - just look at pro carting equipment for kids, it is FIA regulated stuff, every rule there is for a good reason, accidents do happen, and serious injuries are pretty rare, that being said, if I was a parent of one of the kids driving there in competitions, I would probably have 57 heart attacks average per race
I agree on all efforts to protect his kids, but looking at proportions, there is also a top limit for protection when you consider the moderate speed this cart has. I hope your injury has been cured and you are well.
I dont have belts on my kart. With a super low center of gravity and no roll bars its really hard to flip. The one time I did, I was glad to be able to jump free. Would have been a disaster if i was strapped in. Unless you have a rollbar installed you don't want to be strapped in if it happens to flip, imo
Or you pay attention to where you're driving... I drove two fast go karts from ages 8-13, I never hit a tree. Theres a steering wheel and brake to make sure that doesn't happen lol.
You can make a seat insert from expanding foam. Basically you put a bag full of expanding foam in the seat and sit in it. Then you cut and shape it to be more comfy. Cheap seat insert. That's what the pros do

Love it! I thought wow this thing really moves but sure it's sped up. Then I saw the normal video and though awwww it's not that fast until my daddy mode kicked in and thought OK it's plenty fast enough. Wish I had the skills to build one for my little girl.
This Old Tony While it was a pleasure seeing the machine and welding work done on this job due to my grandfather having done the same for GE for 43 years, and my father for the American Can Co for 27, you worried to much over inconsequentials . The chainsaw motor would have worked fine if you ran the chain drive to a belt slip compression clutch available on eBay for 30-40$ . And all the front steering technicaities with caster,camber, and etc were totally unnecessary at speed's under 30 MPH, just look at what Mr Ford did with the Model T & A .
My go-cart tires came from the airport, the take off tires from small airplanes they had a lot of tread left but couldn't be used on the plane, find a tire guy that does airplane tires, they use to give them to me.

You are an amazing Dad. In raising kids, you get one opportunity, there are no do overs and I cannot imagine your kids wanting it any other way. They are quite fortunate to have you. I ran go carts when I was a kid back in the 60s. We had basically 2 types, sprint carts such as yours and enduro carts where you were more laying down with a butterfly steering wheel between your legs and 2 gas tanks, one on each side of you. And..... we ran chainsaw motors, McCullough to be exact. Very high revving, could be clutches as you have or direct drive for more serious stuff. Old Tillotson carburetors. And your kids are out in the air, not sitting at some electronics console staring blankly at a TV screen. They will thank you later in life.

My Grandfather built me a relatively simple push powered wooden cart when I was about 5 or 6? but with "real" (a wheel) steering - all of the other kids had rope. I loved that thing beyond belief! Above all you've built memories for your kids that will last them forever.
Awesome build. Looks like a blast. Your TIG, Millwork, Lathe, & Fab, and CNC skills are awesome. To fab without a frame jig is very difficult! Keep the awesome videos & projects coming. Maybe cut where the frame is sleeved and make the frame longer. Make the seat a bench seat with a seat frame that's adjustable. This should accomodate your daughter & son. Make a cover on the front floor pan to protect rack & pinion from sneaker laces.

You're an amazing father. I've always wanted a go kart but my father was too busy working to help me build one when I was a teenager. When I have kids this is the kind of dad I want to be. Making time for them and letting them have fun.
WOW, what a ride for a youngster!! I never had a go cart or scooter, I am green with envy, but at 6' 1" and well, full adult weight, I won't be showing up at your house for my turn on the cart. Great build, loved every episode, and the humor? Well that is what keeps me coming back to your channel.

Comments, Stop stating the obvious! Mr Tony is a bright man, and it's his kid. People have to stop raising other people's kid or at least let the family's that are strong be a family. Yes, it's dangerous, yes he will most likely get a couple of bumps and bruises but that's the beauty of it, a memory shared between a father and son! Just wanted tell you how much I enjoyed this build video, the second time. As a young boy I was obsessed with go carts, bb guns, and mini bikes. I never had them, but back then you'd just have to find someone who did.
I really enjoyed seeing your mental process. Another thing that changed from way back then was that being a fabricator was not a compliment. Usually followed by a hiding, and lengthy retreat to my room to reflect on my misdeeds.

When I was probably about your son's age, I came up with the idea of attaching the chainsaw that we didn't use to my radio flyer wagon. My dad didn't seem totally opposed but needless to say it never happened. My young self never considered brakes or that the handle that was used to steer it probably wasn't going to manage the steering too well. This was awesome to see and a sort of childhood dream realized. Your son and daughter are lucky to have you as a father!
Drop tire pressure very slightly, like 5-10%.
I use an infrared temp gun on tires. Measure across the tread, look at inside, center, and outside after driving a few minutes. Measuring temp then compensating alignment and tire pressure works incredibly well for tire life!

not to be picky but when welding hardwood its best to use a dowel of the same wood for filler. chopsticks can also be used as a backup.

Downhill here, too. We used our feet to steer the 2x4 front axle. Somebody got the idea to put a rope on it. We had to drive it into the brush to get it to stop.

Growing up, my dad built me a go cart. We had a couple, and a few dirt bikes. Mine didn’t look quite as good as that one did but I’m 28 now. I still remember those days like it was yesterday. You did a great job and your kids will cherish this! Nicely done.

Hey Tony, I know here in the states that we have standardized utility-trailer tires. Usually they come like 8" or 12" and they also come with the wheel too. I know you are more knowledgeable than me; however, thought I would mention that. I have purchased them at tractor supply and they have excellent durability. You might also have those retreaded if they offer that there.

Wow just wow. The commentary the camera angles the tools the editing. Father of the year. Machinist of the year. RUclipsr of the year. I can go on and on. I had a small pocket bike that I took the engine off and started cutting up my son's pedal go-kart to put it on. Long story sure it's the same engine you're using and even though it didn't come out and eighth of his good as oh, your videos still gave me some great ideas and pointed me in the right direction. Pretty small thing to be impressed by but the swivel socket U-joint blew my mind. Great job please whatever you do don't stop

In europe ( i think tony lives in italy or something) cupholders are rare or non existent.... driving is a full time 100% attention job! No need to have a drink, eat a burger or read a newspaper ....
I'm sorry but I haven't seen a European car manufactured in the last 25 years without cup holders. The only exception I can think of are some of the exotic super cars.

My day bought me a used go kart as a kid... I couldn't wait to drive it. Only thing was it had gears and a clutch for a 7 year old it was too much, I think Xmas day was the only day I ever sat in it with the engine running. I like wanted to grow up so I could drive it ! Now I look back with different eyes. ToT..keep doing what you do it's great. I hope your son Masters some of the skills you have. The world needs more Logical and practical people.. Sounds like Super tramp time.

All I can say is WOW ! I'm impressed . All the work you went through to make this series and the cart itself. When I was 14 years old(many moons ago) I build a go cart using mostly parts from an old 60's era snowmobile . It was all done in my parents basement with a hacksaw and a 110 stick welder. It worked great.Now when I look back I'm amazed it even worked at all but it did.
Not to scare you,Tony! But I have a suggestion, based on persona (real-life) experience: Try to get a shoulder belt onto this. My go kart had a lap belt, which was good.... and it had a roll cage, which was good... and when I drove straight into a tree, the lap belt kept my waist secured. That meant my head snapped forward and I smashed my face into the padded steering wheel, which broke my nose and introduced two decades of sinus problems.
that is why you wear helmet and preferably neck support and if you really want to safe - a rib guard while riding these, that is safer than a seat belt and roll cages, because stiff - non shock absorbing structures, rigid seating and tight belts introduce problems and risks of their own, there are quite a few design problems when designing "safety cell", and making everything very rigid and tight is actually bad, think about this way - if you didn't have the belt at all in your accident, you would have hit the steering wheel with your rib cage while also absorbing some of your bodies kinetic energy with your legs, and there would be very little chance of your nose hitting anything - damage would still be done, but it wouldn't be concentrated at the head area - which is pretty much the worst part of the body to use to absorb impacts for a human
as I've said times before in this series - just look at pro carting equipment for kids, it is FIA regulated stuff, every rule there is for a good reason, accidents do happen, and serious injuries are pretty rare, that being said, if I was a parent of one of the kids driving there in competitions, I would probably have 57 heart attacks average per race
I agree on all efforts to protect his kids, but looking at proportions, there is also a top limit for protection when you consider the moderate speed this cart has. I hope your injury has been cured and you are well.
I dont have belts on my kart. With a super low center of gravity and no roll bars its really hard to flip. The one time I did, I was glad to be able to jump free. Would have been a disaster if i was strapped in. Unless you have a rollbar installed you don't want to be strapped in if it happens to flip, imo
Or you pay attention to where you're driving... I drove two fast go karts from ages 8-13, I never hit a tree. Theres a steering wheel and brake to make sure that doesn't happen lol.
Ive seen more kids hurt by having seat belts and roll bars on their carts than those without them.
You can make a seat insert from expanding foam. Basically you put a bag full of expanding foam in the seat and sit in it. Then you cut and shape it to be more comfy. Cheap seat insert. That's what the pros do

I wish I had something like this as a kid. I had to make one myself out of planks and ask adults to push me around.
I did the same with an old shopping cart and got the slightly younger neighbor to push me around.
I made one when I was 5 out of wood that used 2 drill motors to push it. I miss those days!

Amazing build.To settled the size differences between the kids you could make the seat slide FWD or AFT or tilt back.Again amazing cart build.
Love it! I thought wow this thing really moves but sure it's sped up. Then I saw the normal video and though awwww it's not that fast until my daddy mode kicked in and thought OK it's plenty fast enough. Wish I had the skills to build one for my little girl.
On the straightaways its maybe 15mph? For a 5 yo, if it moves, makes noise, and he's steering it, it's a win. :)

While it was a pleasure seeing the machine and welding work done on this job due to my grandfather having done the same for GE for 43 years, and my father for the American Can Co for 27, you worried to much over inconsequentials .
The chainsaw motor would have worked fine if you ran the chain drive to a belt slip compression clutch available on eBay for 30-40$ . And all the front steering technicaities with caster,camber, and etc were totally unnecessary at speed's under 30 MPH, just look at what Mr Ford did with the Model T & A .

My go-cart tires came from the airport, the take off tires from small airplanes they had a lot of tread left but couldn't be used on the plane, find a tire guy that does airplane tires, they use to give them to me.
When I was your young fellas age my dad started building me a go kart. This year I turn 44, still not done.
