have you thought of having a large tin pan inside that cage ? To be used as a tray which you can wash daily with plain water. On which you harvest the grass daily with a scythe and serve them chopped grass daily as fresh greens, you can also add some leaves if you use knife to chop on that tin pan but keep them safe.
I am from India, and in my home we had a room where we kept 40 hens and 2 roosters, and everyday we use to feed them ground up dry fish with some marble chips added to the fish powder, and everyday my sister use to buy wilted vegetables from vegetable vendors. Since I was in New Delhi, the egg production always dropped in winter in Dec/Jan months but other 10 months they gave 38 to 40 eggs daily.
Our eggs were so heavy that you'd feel full with just one egg. I can still remember, vs to eat from outside you'd need two eggs to make an omelette. This was in 2004/05 before we immigrated out of India for good.

    Little potassium nitrate factories.
Eggs, meat, bug control, fertilizer or gunpowder. Chickens are awesome.
