It's arguably the harder path as you not only do the same advanced pre-reqs as applied math but the upper division courses are all theory. So Number Theory, Graph Theory, Ring Theory, Field Theory, Euclidean Geometry, Non-Euclidean Geometry, Topology, Real Analysis, Complex Analysis, Graph Theory, Discrete Math, etc. You are expected to go to graduate school and do further research in the abstract fields of mathematics. Or become a teacher. I went for the harder math degree mostly out of spite but also cause I enjoyed it.
