It's not ironic. Irony is when opposite of what is expected happens. The video is about computers being the future, it's is now the future and we are watching the video on a computer. This situation is the exact opposite of irony.

Holy shit, Pete Perkins was one of us regulars at the Tokyo PC Users Group back in the 80's-90's. Hadn't thought about him in ages. The foreign computer users were a small, tight-knit group in those days as the Japanese computers of the time like the NEC PC-9800 were incompatible with the worldwide standards.
I think you'll be happy to hear then that the 8/16/32-bit JPC scene is healthier than ever. With places like MSX Center and PC-98 Central Discord, the amount of people getting in and doing interesting things is only going up.

The Russians got z80s, reverse engineered them, and added support for more instructions. The clones were U880, T34VM1, and 1858.

Soviet computers, especially military at the time used hard drives like ИЗОТ А544Е or ИЗОТ А529Е, magnet disks and tape in proprietary standards. Never used audio-cassete tape.

128 Kb RAM on the IBM compatible PC, and it was lightning fast in 1984... Imagine 8 GB as standard RAM in 2019...

A few years ago, a locally owned garage in Charlotte called Hondaworks (they specialize in Hondas) had to change their name to Asiaworks. Because Honda threatened to sue them over the name.

The Japanese occupation by the US after 1945 brought tons of social reforms to Japan also rewriting laws left and right. So I wouldn't put it beyond them.
I think it was just him trying to open with a bit of humour. Humour that may go unrealised by many due to his nonchalent and very British presenting style (for back in the day anyway, we have since relaxed our presenting styles a little since then).

Soviet would have no use for the Z80, was much inferior to the superscalar microprocessors the Soviets invented 30 years before the west had them.
Kek they would reverse engineer the architecture and apply the knowledge to make their own ics which then would be found in anything from soviet bootleg personal computer to processors in their radars. It's basically leap and bound better than vacuum tubes that were still inside most soviet radar back then

The Soviet Union had a Z80 compatible chip in 1979. East Germany made their own in 1980. The Soviet chip could also run 8088 instructions.

@@mlc4495 I wipe my ass with 36 bucks. also the 6 dollars from 1984 is not the same as 6 dollars today because of inflation. In other words, $6 in 1984 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $14.50 in 2018, a difference of $8.50 over 34 years. The 1984 inflation rate was 4.32%
I remember seeing an American Fry's Electronics ad from 1985 that showed Z80s selling for $1.50 or $3.50 - I can't remember which.
Shenzhen in China was just a small fishing town when this programme was made. Today it's a giant megalopolis of millions of people and the electronics capital of the world, with massive bazaars selling any piece of electronics you want just like in this clip. Check out the Vice Motherboard video on YT from Shenzhen that's nearly the same as this 1984 video. How times change.

The Japanese were way ahead of the rest of the world when it came to Technology and Computers in the 1980s. Back in the 1980s if you bought a Computer, TV, Video recorder or radio with - Made in Japan - on the back of the appliance you knew you had a high quality product. They made a lot of great stuff in the 1980s. Since then China has taken over the mantle Japan had.

I wouldn’t say the Chinese have taken over the mantle quite yet in the same. The Chinese have copied or stolen enough know how for decades, bought enough companies, and are now starting to compete competitively but they are not dominating in the same way the Japanese did. Not yet, anyway.

Some of those places are still there. Specifically the arcade under the station.
in the case of the apple it might be "illegal", but in the case of the PC he was doing nothing wrong or weird, it has been open and made by off the shelf parts since day one. that was the accidental genious of it, anybody could buy parts and make an IBM PC clone, so it became the default standard for computers, unlike closed propietary architectures that died off.
That depends on whether or not he was using a legal clone of the ROM. Since this was in 1984, I highly doubt that. The genius of the open architecture wasn't accidental by the way, IBM had deliberately designed it as such.
Today we see electronic market like this almost in every corner of the earth...can u imagine how many underground electronic geniuses out there...

Ahhh, 15 years of my life doing exactly that in Japan, shopping for parts and building my own PCs from late 98 to 2013: Ebisu-cho, Osaka:) Meet my best mate in the morning, walk the shops, chill in McDonald's talking about games, and electronics, then off to work teaching English around Osaka. That's a life;)
