  • Jared Milrad sits down with Tony Award-winning writer/director Matthew Lopez about his directorial debut, RED, WHITE & ROYAL BLUE, which tells the story of a transatlantic romance that develops between the son of an American President and Britain's prince. Matthew opens up about his filmmaking process for RED, WHITE & ROYAL BLUE (which is based on the novel of the same name by Casey McQuiston); the importance of LGBTQIA+ storytelling and diverse representation onscreen, and the global impact of the film. Matthew also talks about his upbringing as a self-described "gay Puerto Rican from the Florida panhandle with New York roots," finding his voice as a writer, and his Tony Award-winning play, THE INHERITANCE.

Lovely interview!! Matthew really made history by telling his version of such wonderful story as Red White and Royal Blue and bringing to screen! I hope he and the cast get all the recognition they deserve and can do a proper promotion of the movie once the strike is over! 🙏🏻✨

Perez and Galitzine are wonderful in this film. Much has been said about their chemistry, which is palpable. But neither actor has shown as much heart or honesty in their other work. The difference is the sensitivity of the creative team. Director Matthew Lopez and cinematographer Stephen Goldblatt give them a glowing jewel box to inhabit. With the addition of the intimacy coordinator, Robbie Taylor Hunt, the intensity of the characters' relationship materializes on screen. You sense that there was pride and love coming from all departments and that that provided a platform which allowed the two lead actors to become two lead characters that make us laugh and cry and love them. Cynics have attacked the film for not being what they want or think it should be, but that is short-sighted. The achievement of RW&RB is that it is completely what it sets out to be -- a smiling act of hope and love.

Matthew - I simply have no way to express the magnitude of how thankful I am for RWRB. (I don't have enough $ to hire a plane to sky write over you to express my appreciation, while anything less seems trivializing.) I know I'm not alone in being completely obsessed (in the most positive and healthy way) over this movie - I watch the full movie or sections several times a day, every day, along with every clip and every reaction video I can find.
Much of the movie magic is due to Casey's writing, much from the extraordinary acting abilities of the actors. But also is much that I appreciate things that I know came for the direction directly, the craftsmanship, as well as what you were able to extract from the source material and how you knew how to get what you wanted from the performances of each person.
    So once again, thank you!

This was one of the best interviews I have heard in a while! As someone who once had ambitions to be a playwright, I really loved what Matthew had to say about the process of writing and how it has developed over the course of his career. He is serving the LGBTQIA+ community so beautifully! ❤
And as far as RWRB is concerned, he definitely honored the spirit of Casey McQuiston’s novel and created something extraordinary with Taylor, Nick, and the rest of the cast and crew. Having a fellow queer person alongside him for the intimacy aspect of the film made it that much more powerful. Here’s to EVERYONE receiving the proper respect they deserve once the writers and actors get paid like they have earned! 👏🏼

I had tickets to see the inherentance the week that it was shot down in NYC because of Covid. I never got to see it. 😢 After listening to this interview I hope some day it will return to NYC. So sorry I never got to experience it.

Loved the interview! Great to see Matthew talk about the film he directed which has become a massive hit worldwide and so many people are happy to finally see a gay rom com and a gay movie where the two characters have a happy ending instead of one that ends in heartbreak or tragedy.

As an avid reader I didn’t like the book. I however loved the movie. So great job Matthew. I feel like he pulled out what was good in the book and left the rest out.

Only so much story can be fit into a 2 hour movie. I do wish it had been made into a limited series as more of the book could have been played out onscreen.

@@kekwayblaze3176 I would love more of the movie as well in whatever way I could give it. That again for me is based off the directors vision and actors not the book itself.

What a great interview! I loved hearing all of Matthew’s answers to some really interesting, thoughtful questions. From his childhood/ upbringing, to his early work as a playwright, and The Inheritance.
I especially enjoyed hearing about RWRB, and how much he- Matthew- personally, really loved the book, and how he ( also) fell in love with the characters- Alex and Henry, and with their story/ love story. And how he wanted to bring it to the screen. 🥰 I feel exactly the same!

What a wonderful person and what an inspiration Matthew Lopez is. The perfect person of heart and insight and sheer talent and professionalism to turn RWARB into the huge success and movie landmark it has become. Perfect!

I've already listen to this podcast on spotify, but I'm here again to watch Matthew's reactions and expressions. This is the obsession level I am with RWRB and the incredible work Matthew and the whole crew had done! ❤

I really enjoy watching the many interviews Matthew has given since RWRB came out. I am so admiring of this virgin at adapting and at directing who so competently and completely molded the material he undertook into its own version of Casey's story. And he did it so well that I have never read a comment about RWRB the book vs the movie that gets his transformation.
