I love how you dissected the film. Here’s a few of my observations that added to the story for me. Alex listing Henry in his phone as HRH Prince Dickhead and Henry saying some bellend (Alex) called him at 3 in the morning…bellend is British slang for dickhead. In the Red Room, Alex standing by the portrait of Alexander Hamilton. Zara shutting down Henry in the hotel room when he spoke and the king shutting down Alex at the palace when he spoke. Alex having an iPhone and Henry having an Android. Henry during karaoke singing, “I’m gonna make a supersonic man out of you”, pointing to Alex and Alex “catching it”, then later on, Henry asking Alex to hurry back to London and Alex saying, “I’ll break the sound barrier for you.”

Sth I like to add to how structured and thoughtful the script is and how intentional the director used parallels (I think to show how equal and balanced their rshp is): 1. In London after the hospital visit Alex uses the same line "I need to get out of here" (as Henry explained in the broom closet) to stage his departure, taking back control. 2. Talking about the turkey and al. Alex lies in bed facing the virtual Henry (who is looking to the cealing), with his arm tucked beneath his cheek. The same position but reversed for A. and H. in the Paris hotel room. Henry with his arm tucked, listens to A. who faces the cealing. 3. Two air plane shots for A. and H. resp. Alex at night in the Paris afterglow, Henry after the lake debacle. 4. A. and H. unbuttoning each other, Henry (first night), Alex in Paris.

Girrrl, one minute into your video, I knew we’re the same. My husband is done with me. It’s officially my comfort blanket film that I’ve seen every single day since the release and have done an entire film/character analysis of every single condom wrapper, wall art poster, phrase spoken. I am so glad this story is out there because pure, unadulterated and explicit mainstream queer joy did not exist on screen when I was a kid in the 90s, but now we have it. Heartbreaker is superb. And this is too. To envision this as our future is healing.

The preparation in the beginning with the books and the flag got me. 😂😂 Also I’m ashamed that I didn’t put together the butterflies and “feeling butterflies” thing. Thanks for enlightening me! 😭😭 The texting sequence is my favorite part of the movie. 👏👏
On a deeper note, you talking about Miguel being the leak and outing them when he’s in the queer community, it suddenly made me think of Perez Hilton and Lance Bass and any of the other people Perez forced out of the closest. There was another reaction I saw that didn’t like the change from Richards to Miguel as the “villain” and the political/social ramifications of that. But queer journalists outing queer celebs isn’t unrealistic.
I read the book after the movie, and I really didn’t mind any of the changes they made. Like you, I just wish there were more emails. Any movie lovers who haven’t read the book should do so just for the emails. This movie is totally my comfort movie and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched. Your video is likely to be a comfort watch too. So thank you!

I want another book that’s written from Henry’s perspective. Or if there’s a sequel, I want it to focus on Henry with a bit of Alex sprinkled in, the reverse, so to speak. I want to read about Henry’s mourning and Henry’s boarding school experience and Henry’s obsession with writing and his friendship with Pez and his crushes and his emotional development and all that. I feel like I’d relate to it a lot more than Alex’s perspective, because I’m a writer, and from Europe, and struggle with depression, and went to an English boarding school, and I want an English writer to write the sequel because this one is very American and extroverted. But Henry discovering pockets of joy and happiness and the turmoil of pressure and elation and generally the strange realisations of being anti-royal as a royal and I want to read about his relationship with his parents and whether going to look at naked busts with his father was a moment of discussion about being gay did he tell his father, and was that his father’s way of being okay with it? Was his dad the carefree one? I have so many questions

THE TALENT
On the first hundred or so times I watched the movie, it seemed rude of Henry not to talk to Alex on the reception line. Then I convinced myself that Henry is smarting over Alex dissing him since they first met. There probably is very definite protocol as to how one is supposed to greet and address a prince. Alex's informal greeting actually to us might seem friendly but perhaps Henry is reading it as Alex is mocking him, which is why he snubs him.

On rewatch you can just see the full gay panic on Henry’s face when he’s face to face with Alex. He passed on through because he couldn’t be normal. That is the reason. 😂
And Henry has been in love with Alex since their first meeting. So seeing him in the reception line is something he has to run away from. Run away from himself more than running away from Alex.
Ok I have a whole theory about that. It is partly a "reaction formation" -- Henry has to pretend to hate Alex to avoid showing his attraction to him. But there is also a further context involving his sister. Beatrice specifically points out to Henry how good-looking Alex is (as if he doesn't know). Then she seizes Nora and peels her away from Alex, saying, "you're coming with me." So she is abandoning Henry with Alex, who now also has no date, thus throwing the two of them together. I think she knows what she is doing, and Henry knows she knows. And he is NOT happy about it. This is an impossible situation for him. So Henry is angry with Bea, and he rudely snubs Alex to show that he refuses to take the bait.
@@ambitionbird I hadn't looked at it from quite that viewpoint. I did pick up on Bea purposely dragging Nora away to set up the two guys. Your theory makes sense.
I also rethought what I wrote originally as there doesn't seem to be a formal type of greeting. So Henry couldn't have been upset over that.

I think this is my favourite reaction to the movie. I’ve been watching the movie in some form or other (like you said you have been) basically almost every day since it came out, mostly in the form of reactions, and you pick up on so many little details that are my favourite details. And still get genuinely excited about them. I felt like I could be all excited vicariously through you (while working with a stoic expression haha)

There’s something about the way they had Henry frantically and somewhat not smoothly or languidly grab around Alex’s hair in the red room I think was really curious. I remember initially thinking that the acting didn’t feel that polished in that moment, that he thought wait I need to do the hair thing that’s Henry’s thing. But actually, I realised that it makes so much sense that Henry would be super caught off guard and that his mind would be going all over the place and not knowing what to do first. I also think he’s not used to being surprised by someone kissing him as he’s such an in-control kinda person, and I think the hair grabbing thing is a good implementation of that. I think the choreography of the make out scene in the red room is so fascinating and telling in terms of what is going through their heads and the dynamics between them rearranging itself within such a small frame of time, through the haze of desire etc. I just want to look at it in slow motion and analyse body language and put it into literary and context, you know?
I also like that the move he makes to get Alex to stop kissing him initially is a trained self-defence move, not a “stop” or “get away” kinda move. As a prince he would have had that ingrained into him from an early age, so I think that little detail is really cool.
Yes, that impressed me too. Some of it is as directed in the book like hooking a thigh with a leg. But Henry's desperation in that hook up is vulnerable and so telling. He had spent two months as Nora commented freaking out about his lapse in self control by kissing Alex in the first place. So to be kissed back would have been both epic and terrifying.

I love this movie!!! I have watched it 4 times in 1 day and I cannot stop. The book and the movie are great. The chemistry between Nick and Taylor is off the charts!!! I laughed, I cried. Have you seen “Minx?” I don’t get Starz, but I bought the first season. It is sooo worth it! TZP is in 2 episodes, and he’s nearly unrecognizable. I ADORE his character! (And not just because he’s naked! 😉) Plus the show is just plain hilarious.

genuinely while I recognise that not everybody will like every movie, I'm glad to be a part of the group that loves this movie for me it feels absolutely in place with the roms coms of the 2000s i grew up with, like i loved having read the book before watching the movie and laughing at their 'enemies' to lovers like they are both delusional, i also love the movie height difference because i never picked up on it in the book so I found it utterly hilarious that it felt so alex is just so obsessed with henry that he is laser focus on the smalest details and comparisons that like a 1/2 inch of height is his breaking point. I just wish this was a series so we could get more of taylor and nick

After watching many reactions to Red, White, & Royal Blue, yours finally popped up as one to watch. You're clearly THE Subject Matter Expert (SME) on this film and book. I learned some cool things watching you.
HENRY'S INVTE TO THE LAKE HOUSE: If it helps, because you're so deep into the book, which I am just about to finish, it seemed clear to me just watching the movie several times without having read the book, that Alex told his dad that he was dating Henry BEFORE they showed up at their lake house. The differences from the book seem to support that. First, in the movie, Alex narrates that his father invited Henry. In the book, Alex asked if they could come. Second, in the book, they're staying in a room with bunk beds. In the film, they appear to be sharing a bed that at best is a queen-sized bed. I can imagine movie-Alex telling his dad, and dad saying, "I'd like to meet Henry. Invite him to come with you."
Unrelated, I will also add that I liked that Henry was a bit more assertive and reached out to Alex via text messages without having Alex make the first move to get that started.
I like that we know Alex is falling in love with him, but it gives us an earlier tell that Henry is falling for him, too, other than the heart eyes he is giving Alex as he leaves the hospital.
Chemistry off the charts in this movie. I will say the King's conversation with them doesn't make much sense given that Alex had already given a speech in response to the leak. The king and the USA would be thrown into worse political turmoil if they king called the president's son a liar than that caketastrophy every could. It makes sense for emotional-beats in the film, but logically it has to not be thought about too much or it falls apart.
I also heard you and your friends question why Henry's last name does not include Windsor. It seems clear to me for legal reasons they want to keep this fully alternate universe and not imply that a Windsor would respond the way the king or prince Phillip do in this film. Maybe that was done in exchange for getting access to the actual palaces. They filmed there, right? It was not GCI? I bet you know! :)
Finally, I love that you mention filmic things, like the long continuous shots along with all the SME details I feel like only you could provide. Thanks for being obsessed!
