I love my 300rum. With my H&S prescision stock and a muzzle brake, Custom added recoil lug and bedding, 28 inch fluted barrel, I shoot 1 hole 3 shot groups all day long. Recoil is not an issue. But treat your barrel nice and give it time to cool after 3 shots, I know you will be addicted just like me. It's a fantastic long range hard hitting extremely flat shooting cartridge and a handloaders dream. My fav load 180grn accubond loaded Max & chronographed at 3504fps. Zero extraction issues, no sticky cases, all powder is burned and chamber is clean. Zero heads pace and/or primer issues. I love it, it works for me all day everyday.
I always wanted one of these rifles when I was younger because just by changing the powder and the bullet weight you can alter the entire parameters of the rifle and it just saves a lot of cost that way but as a modern round in a machine gun or a semi-automatic rifle it would be even more versatile with different powder loads and bullet weights, all in the same you know cartridge size. Whether or not the "power levels" ammo is there now or not, the idea stands up to reason, it's just ahead of its time. With a small understanding of how reloading ammo works, you realize it's pretty simple to make the ammo at home to the standards of the different "power levels."
I built one for ELR. Tried rem 700. 33” Lilja 8 twist. It pushes the 245 grain Berger at 3150 fps with zero pressure. It’s a hammer. Super sonic out to 2250 yards
I have owned my 300 RUM for 14 years and I am now 71 years old. The recoil is significant but manageable. I have hunted with it a number of years. I have taken a 6X6 elk at 75 yards , a Nilgai bull at 130 yards, a 3X3 mule deer at 200 yards and a 27 inch Aoudad ram at 400 yards. All were 1 shot kills and all but the Nilgai dropped in their tracks. The Nilgai ran about 50 yards before he collapsed with hardly any lungs left. With all that said if I were in the market for a 300 mag today I would purchase the 300 Win Mag because of ammo availability and I doubt any of the animals I have taken would not have known the difference between the RUM and the Win MaG

Good video and well put together! My Rem 700 Sendero SFII mounted with a 28oz scope and bipod totals up to almost 15 LB shooting system in this magnificent caliber. It is still an animal when shooting it mainly the recoil. Thanks goodness I hand load otherwise it would cost me lots of money for factory ammo. This is one caliber that requires precision and custom hand loads due to jumping of the bullet and in the throat of the chamber.
I hand load and shoot my 300RUM often. With and without the brake. Without the brake its really not that bad. Its very sharp and quick. I can get unbelievable groups without the brake as well as with. I love it
300RUM has a lot more to offer when hand loaded. Factory loads do no justice for it’s true potential. If you had one with a 28-30 inch 1/9 barrel. With about 103gr of super slow powder, you can send a 230 Berger well over 3000fps. I shoot a 212gr eldX with a BC of .777 at 3250 with a 26 inch barrel. That’s only 5.6mrads at 1k, a 338 lapua can’t come close to that. 200inches compared to 260inches, 5 ft less drop at a k.

Those 2 calibers lock you into nosler and weatherby. I saw weatherby ammo (270 & 300) at $140/box a year ago during the ammo shortage (at Cabela's). Maybe try a 300 prc but I would stick with tried and true 300 win mag.
The .300 RUM is a great cartridge! No argument! My take on it is this: The .300 Weatherby Magnum is still at the top. Why? The RUM has a realistic advantage of up to 90 fps over the Weatherby. This is a difference that isn’t recognizable in the field. But also, for the small additional amount of powder capacity, barrel life will and does suffer greatly. It will suffer to the point that one can start to question its practicality. With reloading, I’ve been able to drive a 200 grain Banes to 3195 fps from a 26” barrel. As far as accuracy, the Weatherby has achieved a long track record of outstanding accuracy over 80 years. This includes target competition records. The 300 Weatherby first appeared in 1944. That’s back before most of us knew what a 300 magnum was. Since that time the big Weatherby has achieved accuracy records and a trophy from every continent in the world. Some say that accuracy is better when you head space on the shoulder rather than a belt. I don’t completely agree with this. With good quality cartridge case and proper reloading practices, I would challenge someone to show the accuracy difference. I’ll wait. You can’t do it. Not in any substantive test. The first meaningful improvement over the 300 Weatherby was the 30-378 Weatherby. A 200+ fps advantage is recognizable. But again, barrel life is so dramatically reduced, that practically is even more of a question. Just like it always has been, many shooters and spokesmen just like this one in the video will talk about the RUM as if the 300 Weatherby never existed. The cost of the Weatherby rifles and ammo has always put them into a bit of a different category with consumers. I completely understand that fact. Still, after all that hard work and research, Remington gives us a “whopping” 90 fps advantage? The facts are still the facts. I’ve achieved 3285 with a 180 grain round, 3195 with the 200 grain, 3780 with a 125, and 3552 with a 150. Nobody can give me a substantive reason why the RUM is actually better. It’s not. I’ve also had outstanding groups out to 1000 yds. The Mark V rifle is made to be a hunting rifle, not a benchrest rifle. It will give you 3-4 precision shots in quick succession before needing a cool off period. Nothing wrong with that. 80 years of success doesn’t lie. The 300 Weatherby still ranks at the top for me.
I did shoot the tightest group I have ever shot with factory loaded ammo in the 300 ultra magnum though at a 100 yards I shot 3 bullets into 1 hole just cutting a quarter moon out of the first hole 2 more times I was sand bagging the rifle and it took tremendous concentration to do it the loads were Remingtons loaded with swift Siroccos
Look into a 300 H&H. Its the most efficiant 300 mag out there. Mine shoots the same velocity as my 300 wins with 10 grains less powder and recoil like an 06.
One of my hunting buddies has a .300RUM and he took a deer at about 300yds with it, there wasn't much useful meat left, specifically, the tenderloins and backstraps were shredded.
Is this an exaggeration when you say there wasn't much useful meat left? So where did he hit it that ruined most of the meat from the neck to the hams?
My sako 300rum doesn't kick that bad i can shoot a box no problem thats standing on a bench it does get uncomfortable after about 10 or 12 rounds that is with no extra padding.
Good deal. That Browning gives you more flexibility with bullet choice than other 300 RUM rifles that have a slower 1:10" twist (like the Christensen Arms Ridgeline)
Same here. Great rifle. I cant believe the recoil. A 270win in a really light rifle i was shooting the same day had the same or more recoil as my xbolt westerner. That brake is spectacular.
Yikes! That's a good 150fps or so faster than the fastest handload I've ever seen listed for the 300 Win Mag using a 180gr bullet. I'd bet you're exceeding the SAAMI pressure specs on the cartridge...

I wonder what happened to the power levels Remington had at first? You could have 30-06 level, 300 win mag level or full house
I have several boxes of the power level 1, 2 and 3. I think they were discontinued all together.
Sure wish their new parent company would bring back the power level ammo.

Never had that issue. Usually blows a quarter size hole in and out right behind the shoulder. Usually tip right over.

30-378 weberthy magnum is more powerful than any of them. 300 PRC is better than any of the 300 magnums though.
The 300 PRC is equivalent to the 300 WM not the RUM or 30-378 WM. The PRC can’t shoot a 180 grain projectile at 3400 FPS.
