Wow, 3 seconds into the video it already brings back some serious memories.
My dad had one for several years back in the nineties and treated it like a punching bag.
Once he accidentally left it on the roof of his car, a red Honda Concerto and forgot about it. He later drove away to a business meeting in central Stockholm and on the way the phone fell off the roof and landed on the highway.
Somehow someone found it and could track down my dad.
And he could use it as normal again. Don’t know how long the phone laid on the asphalt and what weather conditions it was, still pretty impressive quality.

0:17 The good old GSM/TDMA signal that would produce this sound if your phone was too close to a speaker, microphone, or other electronic equipement. It also lit up a lot of LED light antennas and stand alone notification devices that would flash or blink when these signals happened in the beginning of calls. I collected those and gave them all up when I moved to CDMA which did not have that signalling.

You never disappoint. I love those deep dive ins into hidden service menus.

The GH337 was my first phone I used for my own Telstra Communic8 prepaid service. Before then, I was just borrowing my parents Nokia 5110 and using a service in their name.
I got given the GH337 from a friend who had it lying about and not using it in 2001. I really enjoyed using the GH337, although I had no charger for it so I would charge it very crudely with alligator clips connected to the battery and carefully monitoring the charge from a power supply.
I swear my phone had the ability to send SMS messages, if only because I liked the relatively nice LCD screen this model had compared to the GA628 (another phone I was given at around the same time). Although, it has been many years and I am probably mistaken 😁

Maybe you had a GH337 with the mythical firmware that included SMS send. I have been searching for years to confirm if it was ever released. It's possible it was released and I'm wrong. But from the research I've done and people I've asked I don't think so :(

@@JanusCycle I still have the phone, however it is in a storage unit that is jam packed full of boxes and such with no room to move around. One day I'll need to go through it and re-sort it all. I'll make a note of getting that phone and checking for you. Heck, I can donate it to you if indeed my memory is correct and it did have SMS sending capabilities..!

I quite liked the Ericsson phones. They weren't Nokia like everyone else had and the sound and status led were always useful. My T28 was awesome too
That GSM sound effect at the start, is how i knew i was about to get a call.

Love how you're using a *Sony* tablet (of all things) to interface with an *Ericsson* phone, that's a nice touch and great attention to detail.

I had a couple of Ericsson phones, the first one being a GH688 - I really liked it - felt superior to the Nokia I’d had previously, and it was well made, with a quality feel, and I especially liked the metal chassis, clear plastic buttons and signal status LED.

The GH688 had that beautiful big screen and amazing build quality. I had one as well. A very underrated phone indeed.

Know this is sort of an old video and you probably don't check the comments anymore but I was wondering if you know how to remove the SP lock on the CF/CH 337? I've got a CF388 that's unlocked but the speaker is almost unusably quiet even with the volume set to max, though my 337 is MUCH better (even though all I get are the no service tones since it's locked to omnipoint). I have the data cable and can get to the test menu but EEWR 1587 00 won't remove the lock (still returns EEWR, OK). Think that only works with the GH and PH versions. If you happen to have any insights, that'd be fantastic! Thank you

      @JanusCycle  Год назад +5

Hi, I don't know much about the CF/CH versions or SP unlocking these. There seem to be differences in memory locations between models. You could try using the read eeprom command to see what values are stored at different locations in the eeprom. Look for locations with a 1 and write a 0 and see what happens. There is very real risk that you could kill the phone trying this though.
I enjoy checking comments and getting questions such as yours. But my knowledge is limited. I don't know much more than I put in these videos. I do enjoy experimenting and sharing what I find. But often break stuff as well.
I have listed the stuff I have found about SP locks and eeprom reading and writing below. Please feel free to let me know how you go, or ask more questions. I'm keen to help if I am able.
      -------------
"DO NOT write or read from the IMEI or SPCK area! If you try that you can send the phone to service at once, because you will automatically write FE or EF to EVERY cell in the EEPROM. In other words, all the calibration values for the radio is overwritten…"
      nandanamitsolutions.wordpress.com/2008/02/17/sony-ericsson-mobile-phones-tricks/
      Disabling the Service Provider Lock
To disable send the following command:
      EEWR 1587 00
To enable send the following command:
      EEWR 1587 01
"EEWR xxxx yy EEprom write, xxxx = address yy = value
EERE xxxx yy EEprom read, xxxx = address yy = no of bytes to read"
"EERE [address] [number-of-bytes] reads the contents of a single memory address.
Pressing G several times gets wierd features - these still need to be mapped. K returns from this mode"
      --------
I also have an eeprom memory map of the GH388 that's interesting. Probably not accurate at all for other models. But might give an idea of what kind of info is stored in other models. drive.google.com/file/d/1fW-nfJ757G402iDiwBP0yReDFBr_-P-f/view

there's a "send a txt msg" function on GH337. I was with a Telstra plan, I remembered I've tried to send one out but not sure if the other end have received it or not. I think it was around 1997 / 1998.

You may have been remembering the GH388 released in 1996. I have made a video about the GH388 recently.
The GH337 never had a send text message function.
I believe Ericsson did announce a firmware upgrade for the GH337 at CeBit'96 that would have added 'SMS send', however this was never released. Instead they released the G388.
