  • Today we tackle a parcel of Pea Nobby Opals, which is actually my favorite type of nobby opal to cut.
    There are quite a few opals to get through but it is worth catching a glimpse of each nobby's transformation.

    I've been watching your videos for several years now. I've got to say, of all the video formats you use, this is my favorite. Not only do we get a little bit cleaner audio and video than a live, but we also get to see the final product and price. Thanks so much for letting us see the details of what you do, when so many others refuse to show the skill of the cutter, or involve the subject of money.

      I couldn't agree more!! This format is far better than any other. Particularly for those of us who live on the other side of the world!! The live shows tend to be at an ungodly hour over here in England 😊

    Love you BOD, and Justin, thanks for the tutelage. As far as I can tell, opal should be cut for pleasure and that's why it seems just as rare as the stone itself to see someone make not just beautiful stones, but a smashing it living with the stuff. That's what passion does to an equation!

    Well done! IMO your touch is what really brings the opals to their full beauty and life. Not a huge profit, but well deserved. I'm torn between the hard work of the miner and your skilled work that you both should make good money for your efforts. Oz opals are truly the most precious in the world. No others really compare overall IMHO.

    Good deal or not depends on how long it took in total, and what your general other costs are I guess.
    I mean, how many parcels like that do you do every week? What is the rent/cost of the workshop? Chemicals? Employees?
    It looks like alot of profit in percent, but is it enough?

  • @MendocinoButterfly
    @MendocinoButterfly Год назад +1

    You ask if your viewers think the parcel was a good deal… I think it is a very good deal for whoever purchases the stones.
    I’m glad you were able to get $1750 out of it. I wouldn’t spit on one thousand, seven hundred and fifty dollars earned in a day if I could put it in my pocket, but I know that you have both employees and your business to support before you pay yourself.
    You don’t need me to tell you that you did a great job getting all there was to get out of that parcel, but I look forward to seeing you “going in” to some gems to reward you handsomely for your work.

  • @karynblue350

    You have to love what you do because the cost to your poor bleeding fingers and then applying years worth of accumulated knowledge and the time spent cutting and polishing, I don't know that you could hire someone at your level for the "potential" profit on these opals because you would have to bank on selling them pretty quickly to pay the person. I hope that makes sense. I love opals and I love watching your very skillful demonstrations. Now what really amazes me is how you work with such small little nuggets of opal and create such a beatiful gem out of it. I also sort of hold my breath watching you because if you make one wrong move and maybe the stone slips or gets away from you, well there goes your profit. In my humble opinion you earn every penny you make.

      @mm6705 Год назад

      He is REALLY fast, though. I've never seen someone push that hard on opal, and I haven't seen a single chip or crack in the dozens of vidoes I've watched so far. I think part of it is how specific he has specialized in making the oval shapes, you can see how well oiled and practiced his subtle hand movements are holding the stone and dop against the wheel

    • @stanmann356
      @stanmann356 Год назад

      @@mm6705 It also depends on what else he has on hand to work with. If those were the only stones he had available to work with, then yeah, time well spent. If he could spend the same time on better quality stones and make 2-3 times the profit then that would be the better option. In business it's called opportunity cost, how much you could potentially make doing something else.
