    Same dilemma on my 420s. I kept the one with a Honda swap as my mower and am converting the other one to diesel as a toy / work tractor.

    I’d love to see how you address the linkage issues. Love my 84 316 with the p218. Tons of torque for snow removal in winter.

      I’ll probably make a video once I figure out what parts I need.

      @@outdoorpowerhouse There is another vid on the Tube talking about a spacer sleeve that wears and how to fix it, stopping the creep.Mine does it too.Interesting that my 318 stays put with the lever in the neutral position.

      @@williamokrasinski9840 there’s that, but some other areas can wear also, such as holes that wear on an oval shape. In that case it’s either replace the part or drill it out and use a larger bushing.

    Could you make a video detailing your cleaning process for one of these tractors. I bought a 316 about a month ago and have been wanting to clean the inside of it but I am worried about getting something wet that I shouldn't be getting wet, thanks.

      Maybe I can do one some day. At the moment it’s winter time and I don’t have any tractors that need an extensive cleaning. Typically I put all the body panels including the rear fenders and then hose off any heavy buildup. After that I spray everything down with degreaser, scrub the heavier areas and hose it off after it sits for 10-15 minutes. Repeat for anything that’s left. As far as what not to get wet, there’s not much to worry about. I try to avoid directly spraying any electronics up behind the battery, but not much else.

    I just completed all Maintnence on a 1988 JD316 starts right up does not smoke the transmission is tight. The tractor has no leaks. I am not sure of the value. 48” deck no other attachments currently.

      Value is largely dependent on where you live. Prices vary quite a bit through the country.

    Thanks for showing your Vintage JD's. I also have a 316 and 318. Bought the 316 25 years ago did some engine work on the p218 $750. Fires right up and aside from cleaning the Carb a few times, no problem. Before Deere came out with the fix, I had trouble with the starter engaging. Installed remote switch direct to Batt. No further problem. The 318 came with Hyd Tiller and 3 blade mower, and also remote start switch. Removed mow deck covers and leave off for complete blowing off of belts & pulleys. As for keeping which, I would be tempted to keep the Briggs conversion if it's a reliable type when Briggs & Stratton made quality engines. I don't know if modern Briggs are reliable. The Onan is too costly to rebuild, but parts are readily available. Thanks again for showing your love for vintage JD garden tractors. One more thing. A Old 77 YO friend has a 316 that he has used and abused. He uses his two blade mower for grass and brush hog. But, it keeps running.

    Wow... I can't find any 300 series tractors in my area at all. I have a 214 that I accidentally found for 200 bucks. A great little tractor... But I would love to be in your position to have Many different options. I agree about parting one out once they're gone they're gone selling the swap one although you have plenty of work in it and might just break even. And now you have an extra Onan motor even though blown for parts for this one as well plus it is newer and you can cherry pick all the good parts and make the 1990 perfect. I'm a new subscriber and enjoy all your videos keep it up

      I find them a lot here but a lot of times they are overpriced. I really didn’t need this one but it was a good deal so I picked it up.

    If the new 316 has less wear and tear I would probably keep that one. That Onan runs really well - if it had high hours and was noticeably tired or worn out, I could see swapping the Briggs into it. But since the Onan tractor seems to have been very well maintained and you say it has a tighter hydro and steering, I don't think it would be a bad idea to hang onto it and sell the other one.
    Unfortunately the repowered tractors are hard to make any money on as having a replacement engine can actually hurt rather than help the resale value. You MIGHT be able to break even on it if you're lucky. A lot of people like the idea of a newer and more modern engine, but the fact that the engine was replaced may come off to some people as a red flag. I think that's the biggest issue with repowering one of these old machines.

    whats your thoughts on the 78 316 kohlers ?

    • @outdoorpowerhouse
      @outdoorpowerhouse  2 года назад

      They’re a totally different tractor than the later 316s, but are still a good tractor. They also have dual hydraulics, which the later 316s don’t have.

      We did a tug-of-war one time with a 78 316 with the kohler and an 84 with the onan Neither of them had attachments on no weights or anything not even decks that kohler dragged that onan

    Ha, do any of us "need" more tractor, but if the price is right, it's hard to pass up another Deere. I just got my first Onan 316 and then in quick succession, got two more, so now I'm watching 316 videos, LOL. I would probably keep the newer Onan one, it's even electronic ignition, so that's good. Both look good though. I also have a 322 (and a few more), but I'm afraid that after I get the 316 done and working and looking nice, I will want to keep it, so I know the struggle.

    • @outdoorpowerhouse
      @outdoorpowerhouse  2 года назад +1

      The electronic ignition is nice, but the P series have their own issues such as cracked starter mounts and valve seat issues. I did some later videos after this one, check them out!

      @@outdoorpowerhouse Oh I sure will, I saw there was one titled down to one 316 or something like that. I figured it was a follow-up, just haven't watched it.
