As a young man many moons ago,I used to operate a combine for 20 years. It was against the health and safety regulations in the UK to go anywhere near potentially moving parts with the engine running. I have no reason to suspect that they have changed. As if you are putting your hand around that toggle to pull and disconnect the drive. If for some reason it was to restart it could at the very least pull your hand off if it didn't actually kill you.
Very nice to get some instructions and explanation about the technical functions of the modern combine. Fantastic video. Really appreciate you taking the time to share these things with us. I'm increasingly interested in ag tech, the complex machinery that makes it possible for farming families to feed so many, and the challenges of acquiring and maintaining such equipment. Was great to learn a bit more about how this sort of equipment is used. Thanks!
A long way away from a John Deere Model 55 cutting maze in South Texas. Ate a lot of dust on that thing. Then I got to drive a model 95 with a pressure cab. Talk about living it up in 1971. All adjustment were done manually, by turning a screw to vary belt speed, adjusting levers to change the draft, or changing sieves by hand between crops. We did not have a grain cart, so we had to be careful to get the augers over the truck beds without hitting the truck with the header. The auger was only three feet longer than the header. If we had to load a simi we had to have the truck sit in the furrow while we ran on top of the furrow to get the auger high enough. Brings back a lot of bad memories.
Great video. Fascinating! I have wanted to know about this for some time. Even simple farmers a have to be tech savvy today. But what a help! I enjoyed the practical side too adjusting for losses was great. Thanks so much for this!
Dude, AMAZING video!! Coming from a certified and licensed instructor in the heavy equipment and trucking industry, you have an amazing ability to explain things properly unlike many others on here. Great job!!!!

Good explanation of the s series combine control. I am not full time farming but certainly miss not running big equipment. I date my self with this but biggest thing I've run was Jd 8800 and old NH Tr 95. Ridden on 9600 a few times but the new set it from the seat is so much better than old external settings. Auto steer looks like a great idea where corn is still standing. Thanks for the video.
You actually would be amazed at how well that thing steers through down corn. You can’t tell if you are still on the right rows or not but it usually gets it right. First combine I ever remember was dads 7700 turbo. What a beast.

Thanks a lot for the encouraging comments! I can’t take credit for this idea. Lots of people asked for this video in the comments of other harvest videos.
So much easier than the old equipment. Pretty much every setting at the push of a button. No trying to convince the shift lever to go into gear. No wiggling the H and L lever to get it to work. No having to find the sweet spot in neutral to get it to start.
Thanks for a great explanation! Although I had a more/less good understanding of the processes going on in the cab & with harvester in general like the one in the video this all gave me a more clear picture of what all those screens, dials, button and leavers do and are designed for and how exactly they operate in the field. Greetings from Kyiv, Ukraine!
That was great. I enjoyed every minute and the 15 minutes went by too fast. That certainly is a complicated machine and to learn to drive it certainly is not a short lesson. How does one learn? When I first learned to fly an airplane, it took almost 12 hours of dual instruction before I could even fly solo. Even that was not enough. The final license took a total of 40 hours of solo practice and more dual. The combine in a different way seems to approach that level of complexity in order to operate it as second nature. I could ask more questions that would keep you from doing your day job but I appreciate the time and effort you take to do this for us non-producers (the agribusiness guy on our radio avoids the term "farmers"). I look forward to whatever you post next.
Wow thanks Robert! I have a great appreciation for you airmen after studying and passing my “Part 107” remote pilot certificate with the FAA. Those sectional charts are a mess! Truth be told I started driving dads combine when I was about 9 years old. Before he let me drive on my own I spent a fair amount of time (from age 7) sitting on his lap and just steering. Then he’d let me raise or lower the header, and then maybe speed up and slow down the ground speed. Then he switched seats with me and rode with me for a while. When he finally climbed out of the cab and “turned me loose” I felt like a king! Thanks for your encouraging words and I hope you continue to enjoy the videos!
Quite a bit more high tech than the Super 92 massey combine I grew up with .and operated at a very young age ..I believe the cylinder was 36 inches wide ...a toy compared to the beasts of today 👍💜
Another great video on some of the equipment that is used today and all the help that computers have provided for you today. I can't tell you how many sore legs and back I've had trying to harvest lodged corn from a windstorm. Looking out the windshield and guesstimating center row and where to keep the head out of the soil and not to high to not pick up the stalks. Hopefully you and your brother are having a better rest of the year. We're still fighting the moisture in the forms they have taken this year. The freeze come earlier than usual by a few weeks and some our corn that was put in the latest wasn't quite to dent yet. I think that things will work out for the year. Just have to keep some equipment and thing on the want list go a little longer.
Thanks for the encouragement! We always have a list of things that need replaced or repaired and it’s always a game of sorts to figure out how to prioritize. I’m fortunate to have a good job with a good farm and a great boss to work with. We got lucky on the down corn lottery so far this year. Some guys right around us got it bad.
Farming is very interesting my uncle bought a farm house that sets on 10 acres. A friend who farms gave me a tour of a harvester. I went with him to harvest corn. And was awesome
That was a great video! You’re the only person who has demonstrated how everything works inside the combine. And to think I thought all those beeps was your chicken fryer going off 😂
Wow, very interesting explanation of the combine controls, all hi tech farm equipment, i wonder what would your grandfather say about this equipment. My grandfather farmed with horses, i grew up on a farm in the 50S with small tractors, our production was huge increase over his. The production now with modern farm equipment has made a much larger increase from my era of farming than the increase we made over my grandfathers farming with horses.
My grandma (dads mom) was 70 years old when I was born. She was born in 1915. We were very close and I love thinking back on the stories she used to tell me. She’s gone now, but I wish she could watch my videos. I think she’d just shake her head and say “why you need all those tv screens in the combine is beyond me. We picked ear corn by hand into a horse drawn wagon!”
Gosh idk why am I so attracted to all of this and I wish I can do your job, heck if offered I'd do it for free just as a hobby lol...great video and great explanation! you got my sub :)
Not a farmer but gotta say this doesn't look all to difficult but that's a guy looking in from the outside but your explanation was amazing I love when people go into detail on why things are there and what they do instead just yeah these buttons do this you actually give examples of what the buttons control
I find this S660 interesting myself. Around here all I see are S680s with the occasional S670. On our farm we operate a 2014 S680 and a 2019 S780 reason I find this S660 so fascinating.
Wow, fantastic. I may have missed it in prior comments but what are the "hot spots" in red, some in yellow and green on the display that show the field overlay?
These things used to come with no roof over the operator, just an umbrella, and you ate dust all day. And buttons? What happened there? Even since I rolled a 9610 when there were prototype 9650 and 9750 in the same field on harvest before those were released, lots has changed (1999). Very cool. Love Iowa corn fields, very scenic.
Yes! I remember my great uncle telling me about his Massey Harris combine with no cab. He rerouted the exhaust to a valve with one run under his seat to keep warm combining corn in late November. Lucky he didn’t catch his britches on fire!

Great instructional video. Thanks!
Thanks!
Spend 400,000 dollars, and head for the field!
Amazing I actually learned something today.
Awesome thanks for watching!
Excellent video, feel like I just completed a mini ground school like on a jet simulator.
Alpha, Delta, Bravo. Clear for take off!
They are impressive machines!
Awesome! Thanks for the great and very informative video!
Thanks a lot Brandon!
Hope more videos to come the best explain ever...,😁🤘
That was a great video! You’re the only person who has demonstrated how everything works inside the combine. And to think I thought all those beeps was your chicken fryer going off 😂
Thanks Allen!
This was super informative! Thanks for doing this.
Thanks for watching and encouraging me!
My grandma (dads
mom) was 70 years old when I was born.
This was such a good video
Beautiful explanation
Fun video. Thanks for the tour!
Thanks Marc!
Gosh idk why am I so attracted to all of this and I wish I can do your job, heck if offered I'd do it for free just as a hobby lol...great video and great explanation! you got my sub :)
By no means a farmer, but I love heavy equipment. Cool video!
Very good instructional video.
Thanks Jerry!
Not a farmer but gotta say this doesn't look all to difficult but that's a guy looking in from the outside but your explanation was amazing I love when people go into detail on why things are there and what they do instead just yeah these buttons do this you actually give examples of what the buttons control
Thanks! You are right. Farming is not nearly as hard as it was for our fathers and grandfathers especially in a physical sense.
Looks like fun wish I could do what you guys do
Excellent video!
Thanks 👍
Thanks Brian!
Great video thanks have a great day.
Thanks!
Awesome job 👍
I find this S660 interesting myself. Around here all I see are S680s with the occasional S670. On our farm we operate a 2014 S680 and a 2019 S780 reason I find this S660 so fascinating.
I’m a little jealous of the 780...
@@dodgebrothersfarmandranch9206 It's nothing too fancy, just a few cameras and a new control stick, also standard with a second monitor.
I grew up on a farm & now live in the big city. I sure do miss the farm
Boy I know I would. Thanks for watching!
Just the opposite of Oliver Wendal Douglas 😀
@@rotunda57... Whatever in the hell that means?
@@kirklothert3435 Woops. Generation gap. Green Acres television show. Sorry.
@@rotunda57... I've seen that show
Thanks alot,have learned alot actually
@@dodgebrothersfarmandranch9206 nice stuff
Great video 👍
Thanks John!
Guy knows his business
Wow, that was as good as it gets thanks.
Thanks a lot Dave!
I would love to volunteer for a week to help you guys out just to get the hands on experience of harvesting.
Ultra cool video. Thank you for it! :)
Thanks
That was great, THANKS.
Fantastic one machine I would love to drive but boy it looks hard learning how to set it up
