      Honestly it’s kind of borderline dangerous advice to get rid of a parka. Plus I was so excited when they finally became more trendy, because it meant I could feel comfy and warm without feeling embarrassed about what I was wearing.

    • @hotjanuary
      @hotjanuary 2 года назад +121

      I second this advice. DON’T get rid of your parka if you live in Canada or near Canada. It’s a death sentence. Wool coats are a joke. Wool coats are fall wear. Also, secondhand fur coats aren’t always available, and they only look good if they actually fit you. Good luck finding one that fits you at the secondhand store. It’s easier to find a nice parka that fits you.

    The thing about “costumes” as a raver is complicated. When I first started attending music festivals and raves, I barely bought any clothes as I tried, intentionally, to use the clothes I already had but I dress really formal/proper outside of the live music scene… so I started buying pieces from sustainable and small businesses to lower my impact on the environment. Also I limit my rave clothes to what can fit in one box. I see some raver-tubers show off how many clothes they get and it’s pretty overwhelming when first starting out but I was able to define my own style over time and not waste money. 💓

    I have quite a bunch of critique for this video !
    For the first two items (off white sneakers and big parka) i don’t agree with the idea of getting rid of these items at all. The advice and “ replacement “ items you gave was really good, but at the end of the day, those initial items stay basic and practical. White sneakers are comfy and go well with so many casual outfits. Big parkas are essential in some places ( i live in Canada and in my city, the temperature can drop to around -22 F in winter, sometimes even lower). These items, even if they aren’t the most stylish, stay practical depending on your current living situation and I think it’s important to consider that when we think about getting rid of/replacing the items we use. I think you gave great ideas to elevate a personal style tho !
    About getting rid of items that are the same but in different colors i also don’t necessarily agree. There has some talk recently about uniform wardrobes in the fashion community since the Rick Owen video came out ( Frugal aesthetic and Drew Joiner talked about it in some of their videos i think). It’s definitely a different approach to everyday fashion but i think sticking to a certain style of item of clothing that you love, looks good on you and that you know you’re gonna reach out to wear every time is a pretty sustainable way of doing fashion. This kinda plays into the whole capsule wardrobe idea too, were you have to restrict the items you own to what you really love. So for exemple, if when you go out, you always reach out for the same outfit in a different palette so be it ! in that case you just have to make sure that you really wear all of those items that look the same.
    Overall i truly think the points brought out in the video are valid but i think there’s more nuance to it to ! Ly 🫶🏽

      About the second point: some time ago I realized that I'm always buying black or white t-shirts and thought that I need to stop doing it and switch it up. But then I also realized that I'm almost always wear black or white t-shirts. So I decided to embrace it, but focus on fit and quality. It makes life so much easier - to always have something you are comfortable in and can just throw it on.

    • @laer.393
      @laer.393 2 года назад +19

      i agree, but i think the uniform thing vs. the “stop buying the same and find other things u love” advice can both work but depends on the person. i do find that i’m probably on the uniform side, i may feel weird about the fact i basically wear the same thing but at the same time the outfit works and makes me happy! but some people may benefit from more dynamic approach. i notice the main components of my outfits (top, bottom, shoes) stay kinda uniform but the clothing type i can be more dynamic with is jackets/layers, and maybe jewelry. that, along with changing my hair, makes the uniform approach not feel too repetitive.

  • @jennabernice

    Your point at 4:50 is so true, I feel like all the capsule wardrobe girlies always say "if you love it, buy another one in a different color!!!" And I headed their advice so much when I was trying to buy a sustainable wardrobe. i did just that, and oh my god did I get tired of it reallll quick. Now I am trying to get new cuts and textures of clothing items in similar colors, so outfits look cohesive yet still interesting!
    BTW I've been super into color analysis lately and i think it would make an excellent video topic since your wardrobe matches your natural coloring very well. And I love how you stick to a color palette, yet aren't afraid to add pops of color. I feel like your eye for color is so unique and I'd love to see your thought process behind choosing colors in an outfit :-)

    I think this is good advice for people who want a sort of "timeless" and "grown up" look, but obviously, this is for people who are looking for that, and some of us have a more particular style and want a different look. Some of the advice was amazing and universal because we tend to hold onto things we never wear! But really nice advice

    Some nice points here. My biggest struggle is always staying warm but stylish in the harsh nyc winter. Wool coats are just not warm after a certain point, neither are trenches. And I'm not gonna wear a fur coat 24/7, it's a little too dressy sometimes for the occasion. As for costumes, the only occasion I see worth keeping them is for Burning Man. I've been slowly building up some costume wear for that, as it's definitely things youd re-use every year with meaning and memory attached to them.

    I live in Seattle and there is no way I'm giving away my parkas... They are not just for warmth, in the winter it's often windy and rainy at the same time and a wool coat just won't cut it. This is why most people dress so casually here... You're always getting beat down with wind and rain, plus you have to walk up a bunch of hills. Not good conditions for dressing cute!

    I wish there were more options for plus size second hand. I've wasted so much money on poshmark trying to get gently used clothes to no avail. And parkas are an absolute lifesaver, literally when it's-30 and windy and wet. Function over form wins there!
    It's shocking how often my costumes have saved the day. Every year there is at least two occasions to wear a fun costume! I've even ended up wearing some items on the regular! I've now built up a cute little tote box of tickle trunk things to break out when called upon. I for one am against purging this as inevitably you will be at a loss at the last second for someone's random roof top 50th bday themed as a 90s rave kid redux, or something like that haha!

On the other hand, I have a thin cashmere sweater that I wore the crap out of last year. 2. summer dress pants...I have maybe 2 pair? That's enough. 3. summer jackets or sweaters: where i live summer is hot. I don't work in an office. As cute as these are, I just don't reach for them. It's too hot. 4. high heels!! My feet just can't take it anymore and I'm already tall.

    Puffer jackets are a must in cold European weather, especially if you don't have a car. They're comfortable and can look nice if you choose one that fits your style. There are tons of different options. Maybe US is too warm for that.

    White sneakers never worked for me bc they were dirty non stop. But I switched to beige ones and that was a game changer for me because they always look good and pair well with anything more dressed up bc they don't "scream" typical white sport sneaker

    This was a great video! All good tips. The one thing I’d say is that I’m sure there are a lot of us watching who aren’t all recently out of college/uni or living in America. Your advice is good for people from way more demographics, but it was weird being talked to like we’re all the same age or recently went to a frat party lol

    Great video! Such a great idea! Concerning video ideas you could maybe do more of the computer desk video where you virtually put outfits together on this program you always use. Or maybe make a run down of what sources you got your outfit inspo in X season from etc. Just an idea:) so happy for you and your beautiful growing family

    I think on a basis of purely looks, some of these takes are valid. But “dirty bar shoes” are way comfier than heels. Not everyone is willing to destroy their feet just to look cute. And not everyone wants to carry around a big bag with an extra pair of walking shoes to the bar. And while wool coats and fur coats might be more stylish than a parka, parkas are water resistant so if it’s snowing you will remain dry and not wearing an actual wet blanket around. I’d love to hear your solutions for remaining stylish but also being practical in these situations.

    • @LainiOzark
      @LainiOzark  2 года назад +8

      100% about the dirty bar shoes!!! i just mean try a black leather shoe opposed to a white sneaker, you can get them just as dirty and beat up but they'll never look nearly as bad. This could be a doc marten, oxfords, riding boots, or even a chunky heeled boot (I have a pair i could run a marathon in) And fur coats are water resistant! real fur coats that is, animal hair is water resistant so it doesn't change when it's dead (gross lol) Obviously these are just my hot takes, and as a fashion channel, a lot of the importance in my wardrobe has to do with style but these are definitely practical and i've been following religiously for a few years now!

      You can still keep white shoes white pretty easily if it's real leather. Just condition them before you start wearing them and spray a few coats of waterproofing spray or wax them and they'll be easy to clean. Just clean them and reapply the waterproofing when necessary.
      And yes real fur jackets are waterproof to at least some extent but should ideally not be worn when it's bucketing down since it can dry the leather out if it gets soaked, how waterproof a jacket is also depends on what kind of fur it's made of, for example mink, beaver and sable are more waterproof than chinchilla, fox or sheared beaver.
      A fur jacket is not for everyone but if you take good care of one it will hold for decades. My grandma's mink fur is over 40 years old now but it still looks brand new.

    Please do not get rid of or stop wearing your expensive, timeless puffer coats - a practical winter staple that is made to withstand winter elements - because your favorite content creator suggested doing so & instead wearing coats that aren’t as weather resistant or warm. They are timeless and are not an indication of young or basic style. Different coats for different occasions. Especially if you live in a cold area.

    Maybe you could make a video discussing stuff like balance in proportions and patterns, color blocking, mixing different “aesthetics,” etc.
    That might take a lot of effort though, so maybe talking about your “style” as a kid since you’re about to have one of your own?
    I actually like keeping items of my costumes. For one thing, I have a younger sister, so she’s been able to wear my old costumes. But some parts of my costumes have been able to be pieces I wear in real life.
    For example, my mom made a little cape that looks like a spiderweb for one of my costumes years ago, and I still wear it bc it fits into my personal style! I like to try get as much wear as possible out every piece of clothing I have.
