it's crazy how negative we feel when we wear clothes that aren't our style! I remember I hated my high school senior photos because the photographer made me dress according to her style and not mine 😭
@@katc2040 she made it very clear her brand was more important than her customers lol! I should have known. At least my college senior pics will be more personal because I learned that lesson.
no same!! i got senior photos done too and my mom and the photographer wanted me to dress a certain way and everyone always said they looked so good but i hated them so much cuz it didn't feel like me in the photos i thought i looked so bad in them
I think the distinction between feeling confident by looking “pretty” or like conventionally attractive and feeling confident because you feel comfortable and happy in your clothes is so hard to distinguish!! Something I’m still unlearning at 26. Loved this video, I hope this mentality is something that keeps spreading. It’s good for the environment, it’s good for creativity and individuality, etc etc
This totally resonated! Thank you so much for sharing with us. I don't think I've commented on your videos ever but I've been religiously watching you every week since the beginning of quarantine last year and you've really helped me get creative with fashion and come back to my own style. Love your energy so much 💓
This is dead ass the most helpful fashion video I've ever watched! I have always tried to force myself away from the clothes I felt most comfortable in because I thought that's what I had to do to "find my style" and not be boring. But those clothes are my personal style!! Seems so obvious but this is the first time I've heard somehow explain it so clearly
Definitely my new favorite video of yours! “Always listen to ur moms, they know how to dress” ur absolutely right! When I was younger I didn’t like the way my mom dressed bc it wasn’t the clothes everyone wore but now I LOVE her clothes!
You were preaching to the choir this WHOLE video!! I grew up deep in the suburbs of NJ and I got literal flashbacks when you mentioned being scared to wear things to school that the other kids werent wearing, it escalated for me too to the point where I wasnt wearing clothes for me, it was more to show others that I was ahead of suburban fashion lol. i think finding personal style comes with just the process of growing up and maturing! Im done with college now and feel more myself in my style than I ever have! and i no longer feel like i have anything to prove to the people around me! this was 12/10, love your vids :)
Literally the same thing happened to me with the y2k trend, I bought a ton of stuff on vinted (similar to depop) because I saw girls on tiktok wearing it, although I normally mostly stick to neutrals. Some of them I haven't even worn once because I currently work from home.
me too, i was in online school so i'd wear a cool item once and then go back to wearing comfortable jeans n t shirts. as much as the style is really cute, it's still not functional for my life or flattering on my body!
Kudos for having realised all these! If I remember correctly I found you through that viral video and I have been following you since. All these different phases you went through are recognisable to your audience and the evolution is admirable. Especially the sustainability-not buying mentality!
Okay this seriously helped me wonder why I keep forcing myself out of my comfort zone. I lately have been trying to wear more crop tops and tight tops and more revealing clothes because I thought that was the way to progress my style and look better but whenever I’d wear it I’d keep adjusting myself, fiddling, constantly have my thoughts preoccupied with how I look and my posture. I would feel so uncomfortable and not confident but I just thought all of that was necessary growth for me to become more versatile in my fashion and stop judging my own body. But the truth is, the clothes I always go to, and always have since middle school, were baggy. So I don’t know why I would force my style to change especially when I’m not comfortable in tighter clothes. Thanks for this awesome video. It helped remind me that you’re right, we have a fashion comfort zone for a reason and we sometimes need to listen to ourselves instead of push our own boundaries.
YES! For years my peers would just assume i was insecure about my body for wearing baggy clothes and all black all through out 2009-2014 when actually i just loved comfort. Even now, i'm 24 and i still love the fit of baggy clothes, i'm trying to accept and show a little bit more of my womanly body but baggy fits will always hold a special place in my heart.
1. Y E S, that first time (your nikes moment) is so important. For me it was wearing a gold chain and pearls as a belt on my skirt (90s chanel inspired) and people were like wtf but later it became very trendy to follow 90s runway aesthetic. 2. Oh. When you said you instantly felt when a piece was "for you", no matter how many times you saw it - one time is enough, I had no idea how to describe that feeling.. and yet I always feel it when I buy my pieces. This is probably why I'm so into slow fashion and mostly ignore trends, I just need to feel that something is right for me before I buy it.
YES!! during quarantine with the help of tiktok i fell into buying so many clothes from all different aesthetics, mostly thrifted but still a lot of it i dont feel comfortable wearing anymore...
I think the real lesson here is to be bold in your choices and dont be afraid to take risks. Im 30 and I started on the high waisted jean trend years and years before my peers did coming out of being a teen in the early 00s when low rise was everything. People did make comments and give me shit about high waisted jeans and mom jeans and now look...EVERYONE is doing it. Dont be afraid to take risks. if you think something is cool, just wear it with confidence and you WILL be stylish!
When you said at the beginning of the video that you grew up in Michigan and nobody really cares about what you wear. that hit home for me because I moved from Taxes to Michigan my senior year of hs and I stood out so much because of my style choices that it made me self-conscious to the point where I started dressing like everybody else to not stand out an in turn made me completely lose my sense of style
1000% agree with you! Give yourself credit for branching out and being yourself. Goes to show when you were younger you liked higher fashion version versus basic trends/fashion. I was like that too wearing the boyfriend/mom jeans & hair in a claw clip with black chunky booties in 2015-2016. My roommates were like you look like a mom. But now they wouldn’t say anything. HAHA. Moral of the story BE YOURSELF (&some people have better taste than others😜)
I'm in that era in my teenage years where I'm trying to find myself and gain the confident and working on self love to dress how i want to and express myself more with fashion I'm just now getting started this video was really helpful thank u so much
can you do a video of how to be confident in wearing things you love, and stay with yourself, even though it’s maybe not the clothes, that are super trendy at the moment, just because it’s not you
Just yesterday I was binge watching your videos..(again) 😂 and Wow, look how far You’ve come!!! Like this is your place now you own it you look more confident you speak more confident and I am amazed by you Laini! I just love you, thank you🤍
dude, seeing your old photos made me want to recover my myspace account so bad lmao i’ve had a similar fashion sense in my middle/hs years. i was like 14yrs old in 9th(?) grade in 2010 and the moccasins, ugg’s and jordans were a thing. growing up in Brooklyn,NY in public school was amazing but also exhausting trying to keep up with trends. and i definitely had a hipster phase in 2011-2012. even now, i’m still evolving & this video just reinforced that that’s okay💞✨✌🏾
i don’t know if you will see this but i just want to say that you’ve grown to be my favorite fashion youtuber. i remember so clearly subscribing to you on another account when you had like 2k subs. i’ve watched you grow and get your brand deals even your first princess polly order. i love how you’ve remained true to yourself and grown over the past few years. i admire how you are taking your channel on a more sustainable route and promoting more ethical outlets to buy clothes. i love how honest and raw you are on your channel, it’s something i don’t see often on youtube. you’ve had a really big influence on how i view fashion even tho we don’t have the same style. you’ve also made me more confident in my clothes and fashion. i’m so extremely proud of you and am so thankful i came across your channel back when i was in middle school. you’re like a big sister. i love you, laini! keep doing what you’re doing ❤️❤️
I got an awful trend boom last year about 00's, Avril, velour... Thank god I didnt buy lots off 00's stuff with lot of money, maybe 5 trifted things only. I wanted to show everyone that I know what trends are happening in this world and stuff like that😒 But Im happy that I got that boom because it teached me a lot about trends and your own style
Lovely video, it really resonated with me. Especially with you explaining being confident in your personal style clothes, instead of wearing “someone else” clothes.
this video is so important to me, i’m constantly looking for my true style and step by step i’m feeling like i’m finally reaching it since i’ve been watching you, it feels easier, you help me a lot and i wanted you to know that your content and your words have a positive impact i want to buy less but better, to have a kind of capsule wardrobe that screams me so i can wear clothes that are my real style everyday thank you for that laini, you are a real inspiration ! ☺️ have a good day 💖
I honestly started watching when you posted your "staples/basic" things everybody needs and to this day I am sooo thankful for that video because I never had basic things and now I have and I appreciate them so much! Just because of that my style elevated and now I am mixing these with second hand and my personal style... I realized I had to stop buying into trends (yes I am looking at my printed UO shirts that dont feel like me) because I never wear these things more then a few times
This is so honest, smart, and relatable! You're my favorite style person, I love your eye, whether it's trendy stuff and how to make it look cool, or your genuine day to day stuff, altho I prefer the latter. I totally relate to almost wanting to "branch out" and thinking that's what you're supposed to do, but you don't feel good in them, when what I really want to wear is something more muted, baggy, or casual - which doesn't make it unfashionable! I've learned so much from you, been inspired by you, keep wearing what you want to wear and show us how you do.
every experience of yours felt like my own . the feelings are same ..i am never comfortable in short skirts due to my insecurity of thick thighs ..my closet is filled with crew necks and trousers ...the only two pair of heels i have barely see the sunlight , all i wear is sneakers and that is what i have discovered about myself ...now i know how to invest in my closet and what actually makes me happy
i totally feel you. i was staying over at a friend's (girls night) she's currently majoring in fashion, so obviously we played dress up. she has so many cute pieces and we coordinated some objectively beautiful outfits on eachother, but each outfit made me feel 1. like a really pretty girl and 2. so weird cause it wasnt me at all. ive been living in jeans, cargo pants, hoodies and tshirts all from the men's section for like forever, and i always thought it was cause i was subconciously insecure about my body or something. and that isnt even true, i think my body is hot as shit. but that night just really really confirmed that i feel confident and happy in MY style and that i dont need to change to be conventionally attractive, that im cool as is. B)
You did a brand deal with Express. I remember thinking you would never shop at an Express store in the mall. I’m glad you’ve become more comfortable with your personal style.
I remember when i used tiktok and then one of my videos blew up i started wearing more of that and also more of like alt egirl i thought i liked those outfits because I saw it so much and it looked so cool But now I know what style i feel good in are lacy feminine minimalistic clothes which are like the opposite of tiktok egirl alt clothes lol A rly good tip is to think about what you liked as a kid I loved japanese clothes and lolita clothes and bought one but never wore it i liked lolita clothes but it was too over the top for me So i just chose some features i liked in lolita fashion and made it my style
Oh my gosh!! I’m from Michigan, I started wearing DCs in middle school because I worked at a skate shop next to the school that my brother worked at (he got me the job) So I started wearing DCs, all the boys also would give me crap saying “oh you skate board??? You don’t work there” haha their faces when they walked into the skate shop and found me to be the one helping them 😳😂 so yeah I still wore them and felt so confident! But definitely wouldn’t wear them now lol
Love this video! I've definitely gone through a similar progression the past few years. I used to buy tons of trendy clothes from the mall and fast fashion brand and I've gotten rid of literally all of it in a matter of 5 years or less. But things I've thrifted and bought second hand from depop, poshmark, etc, I've kept for up to a decade already. Really super cool thing to talk about, thanks for a great thoughtful video!
Great video, I think we can all relate to. I remember my epiphany moments and finding my style, it's great to feel confident in your outfits, mine was that I wanted to be a little more revealing and look like a "bombshell" and wear lots of red and dresses.
That’s crazy that you wore Janowskis junior year!! I did too, and as far as I knew I was the only girl that wore them at my school! This was in 2015-2016, not sure when you were a junior) but I felt like and was that bitch, I LOVED those shoes 😭🫶🏼 love this video and your transparency 💗
Have u ever thought about how growing up doing ballet has influenced ur style? I know for me at least, I gravitate towards more simplistic and almost elegant pieces that make me feel timelessly beautiful rather than trendy ones, which I think in part at least is influenced by my time doing ballet. I think a lot of people’s core personal styles stem from what they spent their time doing as a child and teenager
yes!!! i really like a classic, simple, elegant look more than a bright, trendy one. ballet was such a core element of my life that is almost impossible to shake off
Love the honesty here, Laini! We love a humble and fashionable queen. This was something we need to hear in the midst of ridiculous micro trends. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
the extent of fashion in my high school was wearing lululemon leggings and patagonia sweatshirts. i used to be so insecure in high school about dressing up and people saying i’m doing it for attention. then i realized that’s stupid and now i wear whatever i want
i remember getting torn to shreds for some chunky sole purple doc martens i had in middle school (i loved them! the band tee/canvas jacket/jaquard print skinny jean/docs look was very much middle school but also kinda fire) and by the time i got to high school everyone and their mother was in docs . and now that theyre so goddamn ubiquitous i don't even feel the need to get a pair like it doesn't say anything. i have a pair of studded platform crocs that feel way more punk than being another guy in doc martens . my style evolution is so fascinating to me as a trans dude bc i dressed really bold pre transition and then early transition i was like I Can't Wear Fun Clothes Or People Will Think Im A Girl and the process of rediscovering clothes i like that i felt i wasn't "allowed" to wear (for gender reasons, or parental influence, or size and shape of my fat body reasons) has been so wonderful (turns out i actually really like dresses and skirts of certain styles and showing off my belly n tummy hair is actually cool and hot i love being queer) . anyways. studs and patches and genderfuckery forever
hiii lainiiii!! this was such an amazing video!! I’m in my senior year and I do feel like sometimes there’s so much pressure on what to wear and not to wear. It was so nice to hear ur experiences of how even the smallest changes that we can add give us a sense of self and give us that confidence. I think I’m gonna try it out tnqqq xx
I’m a year late …. But I loved this so much. Dress in a way that let’s you be you. Amen. I’m sitting here in baggy jeans, an oversized plain white t-shirt with a jean button down over top. When I went out, I wore my ancient patent leather doc’s and the oversized, men’s waxed cotton jacket with corduroy detailing that I just recently found for a steal at a local thrift store that makes me happy to my core. I know it will be my best friend for ages and ages to come. It’s basically the outfit I have worn my whole life. I’ve tried out different styles but this is the one I come back to again and again. It’s so iconically *me* that for my high school graduation, my mother refused to buy the professional portrait’s from the school and had me put on my cap and gown over my ripped jeans and t shirt because that was me. I was exactly the same for my prom. Alllllllll my girl friends had their dresses made for them, all very formal satin and what not. I got a little black dress for like $20 and some crazy metallic tights … and everyone went bonkers over it mostly because they had never seen me in a dress. I was by far the most comfortable girl there that night. And I got a lot of mileage out of that dress …. I have an enduring love affair with patent leather chunky shoes and boots, and sneakers. Wether they are in fashion or not. I love me an oversized man’s blazer or coat. I always have. So, ya, sometimes I have been totally out of step with the trends. The whole skinny jean / body con years were a fashion desert for me (thank god for the men’s section in thrift stores …..). I’m a Mom now, in a small city. When I do the school run, I’m surrounded by Lululemon leggings and puffer jackets and Uggs … standing there in my docs and cuffed baggy jeans and an oversized trench and a ball cap. But I am totally, 100% myself and I am old enough now to have seen a million trends come and go and have endured being uncomfortable for the sake of trying to “fit in”. My mother was constantly trying to get me to wear clothes that “fit properly” and to show off my figure …. Ya. That’s just not me. I dont hate my body, I’m not in hiding. I just need to feel comfortable to … well…. BE comfortable in my own skin. And I think I look better in them anyhow …. And I am the only person I need to please with my clothing. You’re a gem, Laini. So glad I found your channel. Also, while you were sharing, I thought about the big style icon’s. They all have/had a uniform, really. They found something that worked for them and they never looked back. Tweaked here and there, some nods to the current moment, but always the same formula. When something endures for the long haul, it becomes iconic. That’s how I look at my clothes now. When I add something to my wardrobe, I’m kinda thinking about my Dad’s shirt that is hanging in my closet - the one thing I wanted from him when he died. I wanted it because he had that shirt my entire life. I have decades of pictures with me and my dad, him wearing that shirt. I mean, it’s a testament to the shirt first off that it survived all those camping trips and what not… but it was my dad in a nutshell - he always knew how to dress, always looked damn good, always bought quality, and his clothes became iconic. That’s what I want. I don’t want to be remembered for being the most up to date, on trend person around. I want to be iconic 😎😏😃
I loved this and seeing you go through your journey was amazing 🥰 You should do a video like this on how to dress for going out but in your style, I feel like especially in college it’s so easy to just follow the formula everyone else is wearing and it never feels like you! So i think a video talking about how to apply your style to different situations could be cool!
Gurl listen this is your sign to stop looking for inspos if you feel confident in wearing a crewneck sweatshirt and a leggings with some sneakers go wear it life is too short to limit yourself.
I have a hard time finding enough inspiration to figure out what I like and don’t like. I mostly just see all of the trends and stuff once it’s already "in". Do you have any tips for finding more inspiration/ finding influencers and youtubers who have your same style? I can’t find any youtubers who’s style I relate to.
it's crazy how negative we feel when we wear clothes that aren't our style! I remember I hated my high school senior photos because the photographer made me dress according to her style and not mine 😭

“When I’m wearing something that doesn’t feel like me...how can that be personal?” THAT CHANGED MY WHOLE STYLE PERSPECTIVE OH MY GOSH
LIKE SO SIMPLE BUT I COULDNT COMPREHEND IT FOR SO LONG

ive been living in jeans, cargo pants, hoodies and tshirts all from the men's section for like forever, and i always thought it was cause i was subconciously insecure about my body or something. and that isnt even true, i think my body is hot as shit. but that night just really really confirmed that i feel confident and happy in MY style and that i dont need to change to be conventionally attractive, that im cool as is. B)
You did a brand deal with Express. I remember thinking you would never shop at an Express store in the mall. I’m glad you’ve become more comfortable with your personal style.
I remember when i used tiktok and then one of my videos blew up i started wearing more of that and also more of like alt egirl i thought i liked those outfits because I saw it so much and it looked so cool
But now I know what style i feel good in are lacy feminine minimalistic clothes which are like the opposite of tiktok egirl alt clothes lol
A rly good tip is to think about what you liked as a kid
I loved japanese clothes and lolita clothes and bought one but never wore it i liked lolita clothes but it was too over the top for me
So i just chose some features i liked in lolita fashion and made it my style
You're so pretty! Thanks for uploading:)
To know what clothes i really like, i imagine myself with a random outfit but it reflects what kind of style you really like
Oh my gosh!!
This is such a reassuring video! I always think that I dress too basic, but it’s not basic if you’re feeling yourself! 💪🏻
The corset 😍 love your style!
I was a junior 2014-2015! M
100000%
yes!!! i really like a classic, simple, elegant look more than a bright, trendy one. ballet was such a core element of my life that is almost impossible to shake off
Literally loved watching this, been watching you since before 10k & i love you’re growth but still consistency in style.
Love the honesty here, Laini! We love a humble and fashionable queen. This was something we need to hear in the midst of ridiculous micro trends. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
"always listen to your mom"...my mom comes to me for fashion/styling advice
Awww, this is the sweetest video , brings back so many fond memories 💘
I love how honest and open you are here, what a great video!
the extent of fashion in my high school was wearing lululemon leggings and patagonia sweatshirts. i used to be so insecure in high school about dressing up and people saying i’m doing it for attention. then i realized that’s stupid and now i wear whatever i want
The video that we need ! Love from Paris 🤎
Love you and your vids!! Your my biggest inspiration both in style and lifestyle
That corset is gorrrgeousss
Love your honesty!!! Wear what makes you happy even if it isn’t something people would normally wear.
why did this make me emotional
Love your outfits. Yay 😀! Thanks for sharing this girl.
thank you for this video. I am kind of in that phase where confused about my personal style but this video cleared a lot of my questions :)
That’s awesome, Laini!❤️
i really liked your reflection and self awareness.
Absolutely loved this video. Super honest and thoughtful, wish I would’ve seen this years ago! Love your videos🥰
i remember getting torn to shreds for some chunky sole purple doc martens i had in middle school (i loved them! the band tee/canvas jacket/jaquard print skinny jean/docs look was very much middle school but also kinda fire) and by the time i got to high school everyone and their mother was in docs . and now that theyre so goddamn ubiquitous i don't even feel the need to get a pair like it doesn't say anything. i have a pair of studded platform crocs that feel way more punk than being another guy in doc martens . my style evolution is so fascinating to me as a trans dude bc i dressed really bold pre transition and then early transition i was like I Can't Wear Fun Clothes Or People Will Think Im A Girl and the process of rediscovering clothes i like that i felt i wasn't "allowed" to wear (for gender reasons, or parental influence, or size and shape of my fat body reasons) has been so wonderful (turns out i actually really like dresses and skirts of certain styles and showing off my belly n tummy hair is actually cool and hot i love being queer) . anyways. studs and patches and genderfuckery forever
hiii lainiiii!! this was such an amazing video!!
Love uuuu smch lainiii😍❤️❤️
my piece was some tennis too, they were some red converse, i was like 7, but i loved them so freaking muchh
I have pieces that I want and love in my head but it’s always so hard to find them, mostly bc they don’t exist lol :”)
ahhhhhh I love your videos so much💗💗idk you but I'm so proud of you as your channel grows!!

Loooooove your NASCAR jackets
your videos are popping off lately
Absolutely loved this video, Laini! Thanks for sharing :)
Check out my “stop getting influenced by influencers” vid 😘
Do you think that being able to spot trends before they begin has to do with ones ability to see patterns quickly?
Ooooo maybe
Yesss, Michigan girl 😂❤
