"So...what do you have to feel good about if you're a Washington State football fan right now?
We brew our own beer and bottle our own wine!?!?
On a serious note, we Cougs understand where Pullman is and that we can lose our coach. It has happened for decades and we somewhat expect it. It was the way Dickert left that really upset us. For weeks, he's talked about loyalty and somewhat criticized players leaving before finishing the season and the bowl game. There was rumors and flight records revealed of an upcoming flight from Pullman to Wake Forest so we knew it was coming. We would hope that Dickert would then use social media to give a thank you to the school and fans but instead his first post was him with his family in a private plane saying, "Headed your way Deacs!! See you soon!!!". Then a short video he reposted him getting off the plane and meeting the Wake Forest administration and mascot. Then a photo with his family in what looks like the Wake Forest indoor practice facility. Then he has an interview where he talks about the lack of nearby recruits available and the lack of financial support at WSU. After all of that, then he posts a thank you message to WSU. It's almost a case study of what not to do when leaving a place. If he would have sent the thank you message to WSU on his social media first and/or given a short video that he thanked WSU for the opportunity then him leaving wouldn't have been as hurtful.

Oregon State experienced a similar situation last year. They face uncertainty, just like Washington State does. Things like this also indicate that a certain amount of these non-playoff bowls will have to cease to exist in the not-to-distant future. Ever since the playoff was implemented 10 years ago, players and coaches alike have made it very clear that they do not care about such games. These games have turned into a big waste of time and money and at some point, enough people will catch on to that.

So, he left a program without a power conference and without a full schedule for a P4 program that will pay more and has a more stable future.
How long would it have been before WSU decided to cut his salary because they could no longer afford it? Considering that OSU was only paying their coach 1.2 million and Dickert was earning 2.7 million, I'm guessing not long.
Expecting a coach to stay at a dying program is foolish.

College football is dying, and it's dragging the rest of college athletics down the tubes with it. The second the NFL decides enough is enough of drafting unprepared players and establishing their own version of the G league is when college football will officially die.

This is the future not only for OSU/WSU but for all of the "not P4" programs. Perpetual destruction on a yearly basis, as rosters get pulled apart by the P4 programs, any promising coaches get poached, and all progress in moving forward/rebuilding is lost over and over again.
College football (except for the SEC and B1G maybe) is over.

Coaches rarely stick around after they announce they're leaving. The school's administration and athletic director don't want them there anymore. Plus, the coach has to move on to recruit his own players and to pursue transfers from the portal during the window. It may suck, but it's just a fact of the times. Personal attacks and criticisms may make the fan base feel better, but it's just business.

All OSU and WSU essentially are now are farm clubs for the P4. College Football is ruined for the foreseeable future. It shouldn't even be affiliated with colleges since it's literally a play-for-pay league. Just make it an Official NFL minor league. These players have no accountability or loyalty to any school/brand. I'm curious the ones who do eventually play on Sunday, what college will they even identify with as many will go through two or three different colleges on their way. The sports has been completely ruined by money. NIL needs to get figured out.
As a Beaver Fan/alumni, there's zero point in getting invested in the team or excited for any player, because if one of our players who we develop has a good year and gets exposure, well they will naturally be gone and hit the transfer portal, and honestly, who can blame them? They would be foolish not too. There's no incentive to see my players have success either. The reward for their success is they leave? Cool. And how are we supposed to get/keep a quality coach either? How frustrating it must be to recruit and develop guys knowing if they perform they're gonna bounce.
I don't have a problem with the concept of players getting paid, but the players should be locked into contracts the same as pros. We're in an era of perpetual Free Agency. The sad thing is the changes being made are only worsening the problem, because there's no interest in helping/saving smaller schools. It's stacking the decks further against us. How is OSU/WSU supposed to have any pipe-dream of rebuilding/branding and MaYbE hOpeFuLLy oNe DaY getting back into a P4 Conference if we can't string together one or two solid seasons with a roster because turnover is 50 percent?
The whole thing is a joke. We're a couple seasons away from mid-game trades/transfers. The fans in the stands will be crowd-funding transfers at half-time. What a joke. OSU is going through its second dismantling now and honestly I'm not even invested enough to care. I've been a die hard beaver for 20 years and even this season only watched about six games. It's just not that interesting... We were never a Power House School, but at least we had rivalries and it was interesting. Am I supposed to give a f**k or Get Up to Watch the Duck$ drop 60pts on us every September so they can have a warm-up game and we pretend there's any "rivalry?" Rivalries are dead. We could have a better rivalry with Corvallis High School at this point. F**k college football.

Wake Forest will be Jake's 10th school he has coached at in 18 years. His record at WSU was a dismal 23-20 and that was with the aid of super star quarterbacks of Cam Ward and John Mateer who both gave Dickert the middle finger and left his program. Notable 2024 games include losses to powerhouses of New Mexico, Wyoming and coming in LAST PLACE in the Pac-12 in 2024. Christmas has come early - HE IS GONE!

The NIL situation was going to suck either way. Dickert got a lot of grace because he was a good PR guy, but he was NOT a good coach. The team collapsed in Oct/Nov two years in a row. He lost the locker room. Long term -- IF we make a solid hire -- the situation is likely better. Cougs are pissed because of how he left. The fact that he left doesn't make the situation any worse in the long run.
Also -- Jim Mora is the worst. No thank you.
