In the game, the darkness isn't that severe, but in real life, if a car has its headlights turned off at night and there's no light source pointing at the car, it's basically invisible. He then turned on his headlights at the very last moment taking advantage of the protagonist's bad tendency to go full throttle all the time (even when not racing), so the player scared and had to barely react in time to avoid crashing into him. Remember, it was in a moment when the player is supposed to be turning into another street. But the protagonist did not have time to avoid the wall. Basically, yes, he blinded us, and forced us to crash into a wall at full speed.
