@James Henderson if its racist then they would only allow certain races to watch it. They woukdnt cast them either. In a predominantly white country they were having jokes just like other countrys do to minorities back then it didnt mean they hated them and it went both ways with humour. Most people could take a light hearted joke unlike the pure hatred towards anyone who wants a harmless joke nowadays. There is a huge difference between light humour and pure evil racism which clearly you dont see.

The world's first "hole in the wall" was unveiled at Barclays bank in Enfield, north London, on June 27 1967.
As a tribute to the golden anniversary, Barclays has transformed the modern-day ATM into gold.
The invention was the brainchild of John Shepherd-Baron, who Barclays commissioned to create six cash dispensers.
On the Buses TV sitcom actor Reg Varney was the star of the opening and the first person to use the state-of-the-art invention.

Being from Canada and from a modern age; I often watch these kinds of things. I can tell you about stars of the 70's + 80's in the USA + UK and even France (I'm French-Canadian from a family dynasty going back 143 years in Canada/France) Nothing brings me more joy than watching shows like On The Buses/Only Fools and Horses/Upstairs Downstairs over your neck of the woods. I've even got a thing for Inspector Morse in the late 80's/early 90's although I ordered some episodes of Lewis I found it too 'box ticking/cultural marxist' for my liking. British comedy is hilarious. French is more philosophical (I won't go into your sworn enemies and their shows LOL) and whimsical. The USA: Oh god: I could go on about Robert Conrad, Barbara Parkins, Jacyln Smith, Karen Grassle, Peter Falk, etc. I'm obsessed with 70's and 80's stuff. My point: I wish you'd get back to this instead of BOX TICKING. How far our society has fallen :(

Every time I get the underground to Stratford and I go through Canning Town, I always think of Reg Varney. Wasn’t he great giving out the books to those children?👍🏻

What a great Actor. Sadly missed now :-( He was not like modern actors that enjoyed all the public fame. he was humble

I thought it would be quite a bit later than that but looking at the hairstyles on Anna Karen and Babs Windsor you’re probably right.
