- Training plans are vital to long term success of a player as is the correct training style. Mastery training allows us long term gains and lasting gains over fluency. I said in the video about the difference between the 2 and i highly recommend the book below

This book will help you understand how long term gains are made. This book called make it stick has a fantastic summary video link below

It's clear why you won awards for this stuff! Top advice I think. Thanks.
I throw kinda like Mvg and Clayton, I have no pause it’s just go go go, and sometimes I find myself doubting my throw, “maybe I should pause maybe I should aim different” etc, but I find that when I’m not overthinking anything is when I throw my best darts but I can’t throw good when I’m conscious of my throw
Started darts almost 2 months ago and I got stuck in that "Play my personal best" trap. It began with "Around the world" and "100 darts to bullseye"
My best ATW was 35 and finished 1st try at the bull.
My best at 100 to bull is 30 with a tripple.
Now every game is about trying to beat these scores. Im afraid to change anything because I might lower my average. I'm not able to really grow because every game is a challenge and not training. Thanks for this video.
What I do pratice is I break down in to game pratice where I break into either playing app up 2 legs and just work up levels or have game against a freind. Or I pick a individual thing to pratice like round board on doubles. But most importantly it's pratice it don't matter if u praticed rubbish it's just pratice enjoy have fun
Edgar, found your channel a few weeks ago and been loving the knowledge I am gaining, but your links to Dartsmad are not working anymore. Is there anywhere to go for training routines etc.?
I like your advice, but you need to work on your appearance. and I don't mean your haircut (debateably), but rather the graphs and editing. It really supports what you want to say and e.g. top right graphic is not helpful and even has a typo. rather increase the size and show them one after another with you talking in a corner
If that’s what your after go check out the darts referee his graphics and presentation is top notch. This channel is more naff
Would love opinions on the below. In darts or indeed most things is about controlling the controllables. Understand the end goal and control the journey. Celebrate the journey as opposed to the outcome. Small gains are sustainable.
With darts specifically and I am nowhere near where you guys are I imagine. However what helped me was understanding what I wanted to achieve and celebrated the small successes. I very quickly identified that focusing on my opponent gave me performance anxiety. When I was practising I considered I was playing the board as opposed to an individual. As such I took this to my games and noticed gains short term and coupled with practice became decent at my standard. I think there needs to be an acceptance that you will not win all the time. For me in practice I at times reduced the targets eg i want to hit more than 25 at every visit to the board which let’s face it we generally do more times than we don’t so this built confidence. Other things were get the first dart into the big 20. As i progressed I never aimed for treble 20 and times it just fell in. By focusing on small gains and bigger targets .ie big 20s I became more consistent. I also use to try for out shots at like 157 etc and what happened was I was all over the board. I then said that I would only focus on our shots that if I missed the treble I would have a second chance. So if I Meissen the treble I still could hit a single and then have a double shot
Mathew, I love when I can understand every word you say, you usually talk kind of fast and shorten the words so some words are hard to understand ... thank you for this...👍
This is brilliant teaching. I would love to have you take a look at my darts one day, but content like this is is enough to keep progressing. Cheers mate.
Amazin, amazing video! Every serious player needs to watch and think about this. Cannot thank you enough for the content you're creating Matt. Cheers.
I absolutely love making it no problems. If you wouldn’t mind sharing helps me out loads 😁😁👍
Amazing information in there! What is your take on the book The Darts Performance Centre Practice Plan sold on Dartscorner?
Thank you a lot Matthew. This is really helpful information! And you are providing it for us for free here. Great guy, keep up the fantastic work!!!
Happy to help
Thank you for this video, Only started playing in August, started at 35 ave, now a 50 ave with the odd 70-80 ave leg but always been setting the BOT to be slightly better than me, I have been either chasing the best version of me or chasing a BOT. I play my brother in-law when we get chance and even though I win I am more disappointed that I only hit a 52 average overall. I think like you said I need to look at progress over the last 8 weeks or so, I have noticed much more anxiety over the last 3 weeks to the point that my hand shakes because I need to hit a 140 or 180 to catch back up with the game.
Thanks again
Wow this is a great video.. wish I had seen it earlier. Great advice for improving in darts but also for lots of different aspects of life!
I'd love a lesson
I have listen to players say they need to work a certain section of the board. They will say something like I need to work on double 12, it’s my worst double. I think to myself it shouldn’t matter what you are aiming at. Your throw should be consistent and technique and fundamentals don’t change depending on what you are aiming at. I focus on my technique not a specific target. To me it sounds like a waste of time. Now I will say I prefer double 16 over double 3 but that is a mental thing. If I go inside on double three it leaves a bad situation where going inside on double 16 just leaves double 8.
Started playing when I was 10.
56 now. Hit my 1st 180 last year. I now have 10.
Pretty good on my doubles but lose focus.
Eyesight is pretty crap to, but I play better without glasses.
My major issue is always throwing high. Aim at the triple, often hit the double (tops). Almost always hit just above the triple.
If I try to aim low, I hit low.
I wish I could give this more than one thumbs up.
Share is just as good 😁
Edgar T.V. rocks. Thanks coach. Darts App's are great. I installed the one you recommended. Again, thanks coach. ☆☆☆☆☆
Excellent video, brings out the real recipe for improving your game. And pretty much everything.
Had to watch a couple of times as there is so much useful info, despite knowing that the problems with my throw came from physical causes I still pushed myself to be my best. That made things even worse, now that I've accepted the problems and made the changes to my throw and stance (thanks to you) I've started improving.
Awesome David glad the videos have helped
Absolutely fantastic videos. Great advice 👍🍺🎯🇦🇺
Thank you Matthew Edgar excellent recommendation
Really liked this Matthew, gave me a new perspective on how I should practice. The former chess Prodigy "Josh Waitskin" wrote a book called; The Art of Learning". I have always meant to read it. I can imagine it is a detailed version of what you spoke of.
Matt if you did ten 121 checkouts, how many darts on average would you finish in? Cheers
Some great advice as always, an app that had ‘levels’ from amateur to pro where you level up in stages would be a great idea to develop a player, get it sorted Mr Edgar 😂
Taking a smoke break in the back of my companies storage unit... perfect time for dart tips.
I train with an app that selects my personal best 10 legs and takes that as an average then I play a game against a virtual me. As I beat the virtual me the best legs also go up in average. I am by no means a pro player or anywhere near that lvl. Also a funny thing I found is that when I played league darts I used and still use a cheap set of tungsten darts. I mean I have a set made by Designa they suit me well and people were laughing at me while they use MvG or Phil Taylor darts or another pro player dart. I sense that it makes them feel like they become better by the name on the dart. I just went into a shop and didn't look at the name of the darts and just chose the ones that felt best for me.
I also have one of those dart apps. I shot one 96 average and now get smashed by the dart bot every time. It’s frustrating.
Woo that was really good not just for darts but im doing my pt level 3 and when I teach I want to be able to do this defo make more videos like this !!!!!!!
Great video matt the other day I went played darts against russ bray darts app wast feeling great I had food poisoning but I couldn't miss a double next day i went into our garage couldn't hit a double both times I won explain please u no I play for fun
By the way, if anyone wants one of the boards with dots on get some dress making pins with coloured heads, you may need to trim them slightly to get them all the way in.
Love EdgarTV, realism
Yea you can tell he's a good guy as wel.
Have just come across your videos today and love them. Lots of variety etc. thank you
My god I wish I watched this video 25 years ago when I first started playing darts!! Who knows how far I would have got! Thank you for sharing your expertise and wisdom!
Know this is 2 months old but worth a shot commenting...
Any idea why when I practice I can play really well, yet the moment I go into a game its basically like I've never thrown a dart before sometimes, as in playing against a bot i can average in the 75-85 region, yet that can drop as low mid 40's when playing a match against someone.
Is it just anxiety based?
There’s a video on this in my video library 😁
This is superb advice. I was almost laughing half way through because literally EVERYTHING you listed as limiting or pointless things to do are what I do! Apps, repetitive practice, chasing averages, changing equipment.....the lot!
We like to think we are unique individuals but when you look into psychology we are all very similar and follow the same patterns
Absolutely brilliant book. I use it to guide my teaching as well as my learning. I also participated (And will do so again) in Coach Edgar's coaching...absolutely worth it and is so on the spot and backed by research.
Great video again. I see a lot of my own downfalls now. I throw a few darts to get warmed up, and then just start a best of 3 against Darts Counter at a certain average that is my recorded overall average since I’ve been using the app. Sometimes I win, sometimes I lose, sometimes I lose with a higher average than my overall, and I don’t feel too upset, because it’s raising my overall average, which then means I make my ‘opponent’ more difficult to beat, even though I’m not beating it with ease before I increase difficulty. Then I find I get really frustrated with myself, when I miss 6 match darts, or I hit the wrong big number when tidying up a finish, but I don’t really practice these things. But then I’ll try shorter stems, or different shaped flights, like I think that will make a difference. I need more meaningful practice! Thanks you Matthew 👍
Exactly the reason I wanted to make the video to help people self reflect and sounds like you have done a great job at that, first step to a better you 😁👍
I’m not practicing in a tent I’m way to big 😜👍🏼
Great vid! can really relate with where im at with darts
Hit the nail on the head on whats been happening to me and the improvement i started to show and then it disappeared over night prtty well
Morning Lord Edgar. Will you let us know when you again will be offering face to face training, by way of video or website? I was interested but just saw on your website that it's on hold due to bloody Covid restrictions. 🙄 once freedom is restored I will need to acquire your services. All the best 👍🍻🏴
I’m doing online webcam based sessions still at present but not the face to face stuff due to lovely Covid 😷
@@Edgartvdarts only reason I say face to face tutorship when it's safe to do so, as watching me trying to set up a web chat would be similar to watching a monkey trying to fly a plane.🤦♂️ Technologically inept is an understatement as far as I'm concerned 🙄 all the best 👍🍻🏴
The perfect video i needed. Got into the habit recently of just throwing at the board for the sake of keeping my throwing arm loose but not really gaining anything from it
We fall into habits very easy and only when presented with it do we even notice. It’s easy to lie to or convince ourselves what we are doing is fine. So glad this video has helped
This is a great video
No intro today? Good video though and some good ways on how to practice
Yeah straight in today vital point was not skipped early so didn’t wanna hang around
Amazing takeaways here. I love the Smart goals point. Its something that has been a struggle for me as my practice is like you said, about besting my personal best scores etc. Its great insight and reflection.
Glad you could take away from the video. Hope it teaches you what to look for 😁👍
Great vid Matt, thx
great video, really interesting and helped a lot👍
Just got the book on Audible for a listen. Cheers Matt 👍🏻
It’s amazing well worth it
This is a great video and one everyone should watch. It's an area I'm really focusing on in my game and I am definitely seeing an improvement. (I'm a clinical teacher and I've read Make it Stick 😉. Great book!)
Thank you, give it a share helps the reach 😁
@@Edgartvdarts shared with the team tonight. Not that they ever listen to me 🙄😆
Thank you for all the great information.
Any links to help with this and the mental part of learning and improving
Have a look at the art of learning book in the description of this video
Matt edger seams cool
What do you think of around the board on doubles, some people say no some say its good
Nothing wrong with it
Well spoken !
How do u improve on 65-70 ave to nxt level, spend bowt half hr everyday, would i need serious hrs to get to 90 odd ave
Time and content. Doing the same stuff longer has no extra benefits
Is make it stick book sky blue
Pwi,pwi, pwi 😎 is it wise to still keep an eye on your match avg on d likes of webcam darts to see it's improving over time
Not at all only thing to watch is what’s left and get your score down to zero
@@Edgartvdarts well I don't mean during d match they have it up after beside ur name kinda an average over the last 30 games or that
Very interesting. More than just a pretty face
Yeah I am a pretty face arnt I
Such an intense vid mat you really try to help people will definitely have to watch the vid again
I just want everyone to have the best opportunity to achieve their goals. I’ve been lucky I’ve got to live my dream.
Seam such a great guy mat keep up the vid's
Definitely want to find that book
It’s amazing, if you look in the description of this video I’ve linked it in there
great video, so much to digest...ill be watching it again
Yes defo, why I wanted to a video so people can re visit it but also I find it easier to talk than type, glad you found it useful
@@Edgartvdarts I'm watching the linked video about the book...im a huge fan, but a beginner with little exposure. Im thinking about making check out flash cards to incorporate in my practice now...thanks for your content and character 🙏
Weres link for book or name of book

Great video but what has happened to the intro?
Didn’t wanna keep people waiting and risk skips as it’s important to watch the video in it’s entirety to understand the message
@@Edgartvdarts Very true thanks for the advice. I now need to look at one of your previous videos just to watch the intro.
The thing I found when using apps like darts counter is I found myself concentrating more at my averages that were on screen rather then the score ! And I’m sure others will be the same. I could beat the bot 5-0 with a 68 average. And others I’d lose 5-0 with a 71 avg. and I’d be more happy with the 71avg rather than the 5-0 win !
I can imagine this is very common
I’ve got a question which is quite important for me. I’ve lost every kind of feeling in my throw. My elbow is going everywhere, my wrist is completely lose and sometimes my whole arm twitches in some direction. I tried everything to fix it but it’s getting worse and the darts fly everywhere around the board. Do you have an advice for that or could you make a video regarding problems like that?
That sounds like me, mines down to nerve damage.
@@davidmirving3139 shit that’s what I’m fearing as well. Trying absolutely everything for fixing but it’s impossible
@@MadMax-zy4ld Stop trying, you'll just drive yourself nuts, relax and throw/ practice when you want to, not because you 'need' to. Apart from loss of feeling nerve damage also confuses the signal to and from the muscles etc, if you watch my arms you can see the different muscles spasm at random. I've changed from a 'flow' thrower to a cock and throw action which has helped a lot, I also release earlier which has helped with the 'twitch', less movement the better. I've changed to a parrelellelelelel barrel with a simple grip otherwise I have to hunt for the sweet spot. If you have a tens machine use it on a low setting to keep the nerves active and switch it off just before you play/practice.
Rather lose and play well than play crap and win .
Excellent video.....
