Riding the Lexus hoverboard in Spain

- Опубликовано: 3 авг 2015
- Lexus invited us to Spain to ride the hoverboard it created for a commercial. Our resident skateboarder Sam Sheffer found the board to be very difficult to ride - but it does hover! Read the full story here: www.theverge.com/2015/8/4/9091...

To save your time: it runs on a magnetic rail planted under the ground. The skatepark was custom built for it.
Knew it was too good to be true.
This will be the start to something big though. Imagine pathways all over the country for these lol
How about on the water ?
@@luqman2626 water doesn't stop magnetic forces
I’ll answer what was left out, it uses quantum locking. Its liquid nitrogen not water. The nitrogen deep cools the super conductor causing it to lock to the magnetic strip on the ground

This is more like a Maglev train than anything. Not what the consumers are looking for.
ValiantPixel You can say the same about original radio experiments in the late 1800s not being a thing consumers were looking for or could find useful. Over time it lead to wireless telegraphs, then audio radios, then televisions, then cellular phones and eventually smart devices. The great thing about this technology isn't that I can buy it now, but the potential it has in the future as people work on refining the concepts and creating better utilization of the early models. Might not be now, might not be in 5-10 years, but with enough people looking at the tech it might evolve into something usable and surpass our expectations.
Scigic And technology speeds up exponentially. It's cool but I think what makes skating cool is its simplicity. I doubt hover-boards will be really hyped anytime soon. Hell, you almost see more longboards these days than skateboards.
Scigic Well said, you two. Maybe my children will grow up using hover boards :)
Scigic Except that unless you can somehow use gravity against itself or natural Earth's magnetic field to force yourself against it on a skateboard (which you won't be able to do) this is indeed useless.
They basically "tricked" the board into being a liquid-nitrogen-cooled train. Nothing more, nothing less.
But yeah maybe one day they will make magnetic skateparks, forget about riding anywhere outside and doing tricks, which would be a waste of money and time instead of working on real life solutions.
Scigic thank you haha its a step in the right direction yea I would prefer a normal skateboard but its still pretty cool haha like you guys are telling me if you had a free chance to ride it around the track you wouldn't. Keep your consumerist views out and its still an awesome thing haha
I don't understand why nobody has figured out how to make one of these things yet, it's so simple. Cut off the wheels to your skateboard, swish and flick, say wingardium leviosa and call it a day.

I like this. An honest, realistic view of a product. It's stupidly impractical but very cool (literally!). There reason stuff like this exists is because it lets the engineers have fun and stretch out creatively. Just rebuild all the sidewalks and roads in the US with the same material as the skatepark. Then we can all have hoverboards as well as hovercars. These companies don't think.
I know right
Potty mouth
+Sam Stringer No one said it was easy, but he has a fair point. It will take time to complete the entire transportation.... but you gotta start somewhere...
It ain't whether it's easy or not. There isn't enough money in the world to do that.
But apparently America has the money to spent 300 billion dollars on making F22 raptors and barely uses it and barely trains any fighters to fly them. Funny. America makes a lot of things that we don't even need. They're just sitting on our backyard.... 300 billion dollar can stop world hunger lmao.
I’m sort of curious about what happened to this park. Was it abandoned? Was it opened to the public? Are the tracks for the boards still installed?
i think the only way we could *maybe* have something similar from bttf
in the future we may be able to miniaturize things small enough, where we could get a large amount of small air jets going out the bottom with enough force to make it hover, though it wouldnt work completely the same

Hoverboards would decrease frictional resistance
Exept this is only works on a special track of magnets. And the technology has been known for a very long time
wheels are for boomers.
Floating is where's it's at
A couple of gyro stabilizers on that and a chip to control them, and you would improve that design to where it would actually make sense.
Yeah but then you cant change the direction of the hover board... Or is that what the chip is for?

so what you're telling me is... hover SNOW boards. i like it.
if we ever DO get fully functional hoverboards, people are gonna learn REAL quick how brakes are supposed to work. I foresee a massive amount of injuries from people realising that without it touching the ground, making turns and stopping will be nearly impossible
Doesn't need to be impossible.. you could like push air out from the front to brake, or have some flaps.. easy to solve.
Beep Boop
well planes have airbrakes but they aren't nearly as good as normal brakes on a car
Practicality aside, I'm sure the theory behind a Hoverboard would be beneficial for future technological growth in this sector.
5yrs Later HACKSMITH made it come true.
so i was just recommended this now
5:07 hasn't brought us any closer? You sure?
Im just glad we as humans are developing something like this. This is a big step towards something great.
I wonder if ion thrusters would work for this.
I just realized that this video is very old! How we are now? Any advance?
Q:How to improve this?
A: just bring room temperature superconductors
It's true and progress has been made. I think the temperature now needed for a superconductor is -130 compared to a little above 0 kelvin fifty years ago. So give it a 100 years and we might do it.
when u talked about magnets i thought why not build a whole skatepark out of a - magnet and u ride on a + magnet board
Because opposites attract? The skatepark and board would both need to be magnets of the same polarity to create the repelling force you're thinking of.
i.e.: Either both components be positive (+) or both negative (-) for that idea to possibly work, or else have one be ferromagnetic and the other be diamagnetic.
A year late but opposites attrack, you’re thinking - and - or + and +
Brallit attach a opposite to bottom of hoverboard
how did that guy apparently do it in the commercial if they said it needed to be on the track?

Honestly, the back to the future hover board is still the coolest one for me even though it's just special effects.
And I actually like those futuristic and colorful commercials most companies make these days. Specially this one.
They don't have the technology yet?! I mean we went to the moon and back in the 60's, right?
Brendon Fields well, generating tons of thrust to shoot something in space is a bit easier due to the fact that you can use actual fuel. The thing with the hoverboard is, that you don't want it to be loud or too heavy, because people would want to use it in public. Just ripping apart streets worldwide to add such magnets won't work either, no company would want (and probably would have) that much money to spend.
Hovering isn't a thing that's easy to create, if you take that into account, it requires a completely new technology, one of the kind you don't just come up with by chance
pepole who think the world is flat: *"earth is flat, gravity dont exsist, the moon landing was fake"*
real pepole who think right: Science...
It's only a matter of time. The history of spacecraft, look them up. The history of computers, it will take time.

Can we stop hyping up these worthless Hover-boards? Having a board with a superconducting magnet on the bottom doesn't mean you've got an effective means of transportation. They can only go over metal surfaces and weighs a crazy amount, making them widely impractical. This tech is a huge dead-end and will never lead to mass produced hover-boards.
***** Can we stop hyping up these worthless radio signal technologies? Having a means of converting wavelengths of sound into electrical signals doesn't mean you've got an effective means of communication. They can only be used with giant metal towers and weighs a crazy amount making them widely impractical. This tech is a huge dead-end and will never lead to mass produced radios/televisions/smartphones.
Scigic Are you honestly suggesting that in the future, we will build magnetic roads and pavements, just so we can have transportation that levitate a few inches off the ground?
Radio is a very versatile technological advancement with many applications, but this is just a superconducting magnet. it's nothing new, and other than floating stuff over other magnets, there's not much else it can be used for. Maglev trains can use this tech well, but again, they aren't new and that's the only application I can see for this tech in the real world. Even with weight reduced, better control and a functional fuel source, this tech is a dead-end just because you'd essentially have to turn every car and board into a mini train for it to work. If it can only go on one hard to manufacture/maintain surface, why would we ever swap wheels for this?
Maybe if they changed the tech so it didn't need the specialised surface, it'd be interesting, but right now it's hardly better than a party trick.
***** What I am trying to point out is that the technology is in its very early days. If we were to go back to the early days of any technology you would find similar comments about the unsuitability or non-sensibility of that technology even with something as ubiquitous as radio, but because people persisted through the criticism they turned it into something great. I'm not claiming to know where this technology will go. Will I drop money on these early experiments? No, but am I excited for where the potential this technology could lead to in 20-30 or even a 100 years? Yes.
***** He has a point. Meanwhile, at the dawn of electricity Edison tried his hardest to prove that Alternating Current was dangerous, useless, and that Tesla got it wrong. Do you know what electricity we use today? You guessed it; A/C.
You guys are all so smart and civil in your communication. Sending all of you some internet hugs.
