My dad was a pastor and I realized at about age ten that the Bible was just a book of stories, not the word of God. By my mid teens I figured out that probably around 30% of the people in our church were like me. They didn't believe either but were stuck there for whatever reason, usually family pressure. With the kids in our church, probably more like 80%. Their bodies were still in church, but their brains had left. Out of all my buddies from church that I still have contact with, only one goes to church willingly. The rest of them either don't go, or they only go to church because they don't want to get divorced.

I myself stopped going to church shortly after moving out of my parents house. I hated the hurt that some leaders caused, the lack of connection and listening to the people of the church by those that made the calls.
I remember very vividly the time our pastor hired a young couple to be our new youth leaders when we already had a great youth leader that was a member of the church already, she was a new believer and was doing an amazing job and needed that herself as much as we did. The second that pastor basically replaced her, he sent a message that she wasn't good enough or trustworthy.
Not only did it push her away, she stopped going to church because she didn't want to see that pastor or here his niceties. She fell away and her and her husband's marriage fell apart because she wanted nothing to do with god or church anymore, but her husband did.
In the end it ruined the church, it fell apart faster and faster even though the core believers kept fighting for decades keeping it going, in the end it closed its doors in 2018.
This is why I don't go to church. I don't trust them to listen to the people, but yet forge the decisions with the scripture, the word of God. Without prayer and discernment there can only be pain and mistakes.

Well I'm hardly young anymore but I stopped attending formal service simply because of all of the petty behavior I experienced from supposed Christian adults. I really came to loathe all of the busy bodies who wanted to get into every aspect of of your business. No privacy from those folk. Then they wanted to preach about how you should live your life, which was ultimately the way they lived theirs. Hated that with a passion. Leave me alone, don't attempt to involve yourself in my life, stick to your own. And don't give advice unless I ask for it, which I won't, so that means to keep your mouth shut. Most folk I met at church just couldn't do that, they wanted to be all up in your business and way up at that. So I stopped going.

When I was a Catholic they actually had spies in the church, iam not joking. Some of the women would sit in designated spots watching to see if there where occultist, witches in the church. When I asked this woman what do you look at people for, she said some people take the Holy Host meaning the wafer and spit it into a handkerchief or walk out of the church with it. She said that we get people from the occult that take the Holy Host and use it for a satanic ritual. I asked the priest is this true that you have spies in the church and he said yes , I enlist people to do that because the host is sacred. All I can say to this is the Catholic church is a mental institution. They are all crazy.

What you have stated is exactly why I only go to church during visiting hours, I go and pray/meditate whatever on my own so I don't have to deal with these crazy so-called Christians! I'm here to seek/speak to God and perhaps to a priest/vicar whoever, not anyone else.
But here's something interesting, I AM a young person, I do not describe myself as a Christian but an agnostic, but I would say I'm culturally Christian and miss many aspects of the faith that I was raised. I truly value the sanctuary that churches provide in this instance and I'm not the only young person using church in this way. Often times when I go during non-service times, I am not the only other young person there, but the few times I have been compelled to go to an actual Sunday service, I almost always am (apart from the super fundamentalists who I find insufferable to be around and who always make me regret showing up on Sundays). So I think that we are going to Church, just by ourselves.

Some were brought up in a religious environment and then had questions that weren't answered to their satisfaction. You can't make people believe, and it doesn't make you a good/bad person either way. I believe there's a possibility of a god/gods but that it's unlikely. One of the reasons that I no longer attend an organized religion church is because Churches are run by people. Work responsibilities as mentioned was the first issue mentioned in this story. Paying the bills in today's world is more important than attending church as often as elders in "some" churches say you should doesn't wash. My first responsibility is to keep the lights on, pay the bills, keep food on the table. Attending church 3 or 4 times a week doesn't happen very much in today's world. At one time, the "man of the house" was the only person that had a job to pay the bills. Those days are long gone. Every family I know has both parents working and children work part time jobs in addition to going to school. We live in the world we have today, not the world there was of yesteryear. I can talk to God at home as well as in church.

I must have read so many of people's comments on here only to say to myself?, we really are in trouble if we dont repent pray and get into God's Word only then will we fill our empty voids and finally find Wisdom and Understanding with peace in our hearts. Our children are using their parents as role models by being lovers of themselves at an early age and because their young parents dont know any better the introduction of technology and its access to unfiltered society wisdom on a secular level at their finger tips is making them believe "HEY" we can be creators of fulfillment ourselves? Children as old as 3 and up are being introduced to a screen for fulfillment and identity, yes I am talking about that CPU that fits into everyone's hands. No, I am wrong?, leave your phones off for a day or even a week and see how long one can go without that distraction? This technology continues to infiltrate our churches even the pastor uses one at the pulpit (a tablet as a Bible).
Problem with that knowledge at our fingertips really isnt knowledge at all. Because all this will one day pass away (when we die) but God's Word will always endure. There are so many situations linked to that CPU it is pulling us away from quality time with our kids and ourselves. Everyone has a church inside them, your body is the temple of the Lord and 3 or more in fellowship God is in the midst😁✌

Many years ago I knew a woman that was a missionary. I asked her if she sinned and how often. This woman told me maybe once a week! Wow! It is not a missionary, minister or a confident member of church that is close to GOD. It is the person with humility and the convincing of the Holy Spirit to bring us to repenting for our sins. The church I used to attend had a confirmation program that, it my opinion, was too much.
It was a 2-year program. The youth pastor expected every missed class to be made up.
Students had to either sing in choir or help out with Sunday School.
They also had to help out twice in 7th grade and 8th grade with the homeless program.
Lastly, they had to attend church once a month and fill out a sheet, with the high points of the sermon, the list of hymns sung, and any additional speakers (e.g., head of finance talking about how short the stewardship campaign is).
When I went through confirmation in the mid 1970s, it was 4 overnight retreats, and the high school choir had been disbanded due to a reduction in sanctuary services.
There is an old saying that 10% of a congregation does 90% of the work. So, my former church was trying to get confirmation students to understand that every congregation member should do some work.
But, between schoolwork, sports, other school clubs, school music, and such, church is going to lose, if too much is expected. That has long term effects.
My church also expected every last kid to sing in choir, from pre-school to high school. That can turn off kids.

Ask the typical teenager how much classic literature they have read. It seems to me they're preoccupied with Snapchat and Instagram and don't seem too concerned with the educational opportunities they're afforded. Nor do I see a desire for them to help in their communities. Do you hear young people today talking about joining the Peace corps or helping out at the hospital? From what I’ve seen down here in the Bible Belt, it appears that most people around my age (26) are too interested in living for themselves. They would rather party all night on Saturday and sleep in on Sunday. They “believe” in God and they might even pray when a relative gets diagnosed with cancer or a friend is injured in a car wreck, but they surely don’t believe in God in the sense of having a real spiritual relationship with Jesus Christ. My wife and I are the only couple under 30 in our little country church and the average age in our congregation is probably 65. I grew up in this same church and there were probably thirty or so kids my age when I was younger. I’m the only one who regularly attends and participates in the church now. There might be five out of that group who have moved and may attend somewhere else, but most still live in the same area and don’t attend church anywhere. It’s sad what’s happening to our small country churches. People don’t support them like they used to.
