WG could give other nations whatever flying boats they had during the time (the French had a single Potez-CAMS 141 which sunk a submarine), or for situations like Pan-Asia and Pan-Am they could just reuse the JP/US stuff.
Shooting torps back then: calculate where you should aim and then launch the torpedoes. Shooting torps in wows: aim at the general direction and then play sonar ping pong with the enemy ship.

The torpedoes were fire and forget, not this weird ping pong thing. Also pretty dumb that all nations get this. This is the reason why I don't like Wargaming, they don't care about historical accuracy and they keep adding weird stuff to their games which either didn't exist or only existed in blueprints.

At least there is more we can do about it. They have to ping the same spot versus the old "general bow n stern" policy from before. That's much easier to defend from the citadel at least for most ships

@@Bezhodeft in World War II a lot of what was going on with submarines and carriers was fighting there was a reason why the class escort carriers were created their main job was to hunt the submarines. In hunting and chasing Subs was still a relatively important job that was carried out by carriers up until about the late 80s.
I was saying this because ap bombs and rockets exist and they talked about damaging subs from 10 m with no mention of how the ap version would work plus I was just fucking joking I clearly was being sarcastic I know cvs suck.
@Lurking Carrier CVS are very balanced and require dedicated time and skill to master. Play tier 10 cv or tier 8 cv then tell me if CVS are overpowered. For some ships they have over powered Anti air.

They ruin it for destroyers by stealing the ability to do spotting damage and by routinely spotting destroyers when the latter are trying to cap a point or sneak around the side of a enemy formation. They ruin it for cruisers because their AP and HE bombs and torpedoes can do significant amounts of damage to said ships. Allonwg with this they can keep a cruiser spotted at a safe distance. Making said cruiser a good target for enemy battleships. Thwy ruin it for battleships because their hard hitting AP bombs and Torpedoes do huge amounts of damage. Along with this, you know how battleships have large turning circles? When a battleship needs to amuver he often will stop shooting to go unspotted and not show his broadside during the turn. But if he is spotted by aircraft he is under danger from enemy long range HE cruisers and AP salvos from enemy battleships. Meanwhile the CV is often inaccesible untill the end of the match. Allong with this they have crazy good damage control so it is hard to set them on fire or flood them. I see two solutions to this problem. We need to either make it so that if you are spotted by CV you only appear on the mini-map and nerf the healing and damage control of CV's. There are two solutions i

You have to ping the same area twice. Just think how hard it would be to hit the same part of a ship twice. Torps are the only weapon submarines have, and seems like they will be very fragile. I don´t mind them having the deadliest torps in the game.

Yeah, your battery will recharge (slowly) to 30% if it is below 30% when submerged, but this is probably only about 1-2 ping buffer before you hit 20% and suffer the ping width penalty
They should play no part in the game. They are far too easy to use, the homing torpedo thing is totally OP, they are far too fast on the surface, sub versus sub combat is so easy its laughable. People may say "oh well this is what testing is for, to iron out these issues" but the pressure that will be put on DD players who already have to dodge attack aircraft and numerous radar ships with 12km radars is now becoming insane. This should be a co op game only for subs

the main problem is the absence of mechanic which requires subs to surface after given amount of time. This allows them to dive as long as they want and this will be beneficial to run down the clock especially if you're ahead on points
These crazy mechanics just show how submarines dont fit in this game. Submarines of ww2 era never were intended for fleet action, and rarely took part in such engagements. Look for some SH3/SH4 gameplay, just to get the idea.
Not to mention that countries used submarines totally differently from each other. U boats were commerce raiders that mostly attacked at night on the surface early in the war but transitioned to submerged attacks, where American boats were used like frigates, engaging mostly on the surface with guns because their torps were shit.
And battleships were never intended to fight constantly at point-blank ranges like in the game. The armor protection was to allow them to largely defeat incoming fire at longer ranges. When it comes to making the gameplay fun vs. historically accurate, making it fun will always win out.
With the Sonar Ping mechanic, sounds like you're gonna have to be dead on to get that damage buff and ignore torp protection, so if enemy BB moves away and you hit different spot even slightly it won't work. As with the detectability changes, that's good to know as you have to close in and be more vulnerable to torpedo, and hopefully the penalty of the battery is enough to make subs surface more.

This is a joke. Recharging underwater is a joke. You could allow snorkels at mid/higher tiers. Most WW2 subs barely managed 9 or 10 knots underwater. Obviously Type XXI was a brilliant exception on the underwater speed matter. It was actually slower surfaced, a most curious case of hull shape design.
Yeah sounds about right subs should only recharge when surfaced. But I think the idea of a snorkel to allow charging underwater be cool however I'd argue that the sub would need to be still in order to charge and also the charging underwater would be slower compared to above water meaning charging via snorkel be just a neat niche that comes in handy when it is too dangerous to surface.

The biggest counterplay issue for CVs is not a lack of depth charges, it's the lack of ability to see the depth of a sub (they can't target lock onto anything). Thus you go for the bombs on a sub you or your team just spotted having no clue you could never hit it to begin with because it was 30-50m under. It's like trying to shoot at ships knowing only their direction and not range. I'm not asking for a balance change, just a UI one that allows people to see the depth of a spotted sub without locking on.
Why WG? You clearly hate BB's enough to make them basically pointless to the game already ... If you want to throw subs into the mix as well why not just save us all the arse ache and remove BB's all together

I think you should change how Subs work underwater by having it so you use up charge underwater and you HAVE to surface to recharge the batteries I think this would make the Subs a bit more challenging to play because then players would have to learn when it's the most favorable time to surface and where they should use what and when.
My only request is that the deck guns work. I know they wont amount to much damage, but letting them set fires or cause minor damage to nearby surface ships could mean the difference between life and death. I enjoyed it when the first subs in the halloween event used theirs, how they acted more like secondary guns than primary. No matter how they're used, i still think deck guns while surfaced should be utilized somehow.
I do not understand why people complain, I prefer a thousand times that they put vehicles that if they existed like submarines, that branches of ships doubtfully existed in plans. In addition to adding more variety compared to other more complete games and no one complains, it is the opposite. I think the problem is that everyone is afraid of the new. They are the typical ones who say before it was better, when in reality, now everyone can defend themselves from the sub are made of paper and they will have to face each other.
So subs still don't have to surface? Why not? Bring back oxygen supply and force them to surface after it's depleted. Also the anti sub warfare for cruisers and battleships still seems highly flawed: if the sub can see a ship from 9 km away, but the surface ship cannot detect it at that range, then what on earth do the planes help you? And since the sub is not forced to surface there is little you can do apart from turning away, especially if there is now DD to help. Sure, you could try to push in, but the sub is most likely not alone and with the citadeling torps that's suicide. Talking about the torps - they still turn waaaaay too fast. If they are able to citadel ships, they shouldn't be that maneuverable in my opinion. Obviously it's hard to judge from a video alone and I'll have to see how gameplay develops, but I'm afraid that I will stop playing for good when they get implemented into random battles.

They already have a counter... CV's start in the back of the map wich would take the sub 20-30 minutes to get too, and even if they do reach the CV the CV is faster than subs anyways.
You are STILL not addressing one of the biggest issues with submarines; They will STILL be able to remain underwater for the whole game. There is no need to surface if the battery charges when travelling submerged. Stop allowing battery to recharge submerged. Period.
I like these changes. Makes subs more reliable in an attack, gives more feedback to targeted enemies, and fixes the problem of DDs having to work even more by giving bigger ships the ability to call in extra support. Good update all around!
To be fair. I this surprises even me who is normally very anti cv and anti sub. This all sounds and looks like an improvement. Looking forward to the test starting next few days and really Hope that subs can be added without harming the game. Bring it on. Actually slightly hyped for this.
I think it'll swing the other way around now, and the Subs will have a really hard time managing much, kinda like DD's do now days with carriers, and like wise i think a sub that manages to scare people off caps and stay alive... that'll be really helpful at the end of game.
I'm an Alpha player, been here literally since, Day One and all I heard was "No Subs" over and over again. I'm glad WOW changed their minds, I think the Subs will add a new faucet to the game and attract more players. The PBY's are are a great touch and I look forward to the new additions! It would also be interesting to have Night Battles. The Game has come far and is only getting better...

I think the homing itself should be completely removed. That way you can remove that complicated ping mechanic. In exchange, when a ship is detected by a submarine you can add a separate detected icon with a submarine icon and show which general direction they're from. Now, if that can't be removed, I highly disagree with the double ping bypassing torpedo protection. Torpedo protection is there for it's namesake. Not all ships can repair citadel damage. Seeing a Fuso calling in PBY's is just plain weird.
So ummmmmm..... 7 kilometer hydrophone......? Well bois guess submarines aren't ment to be stealthy anymore. 😔Ruined my enthusiasm... Edit: I guess it ain't that big a deal as 7 kilometers of hydrophone only applies to destroyers the natural predators of submarines who I guess should be able to out spot submarines. Gonna be really hard to carry with submarines though if your team can't keep the enemy destroyers away.

Ain't really purposed for taking out everything that stands in their way but instead plans and positions to take out what they think what the most high value target on the enemies teams is for example that one veteran player the enemy team has. Kinda sounds like a CV but more dangerous however at the expense of risking their own ship if they are submerged away from their teammates and is tethered to a certain area of the map doesn't have that incredible reach of CV. Idk a little while after these changes we will find what makes the subs useful despite being downgraded to like an infiltrating support ship.
These changes are very good, lets be honest, in the previous one, subs were way too strong and without there counter (dds) it was nearly impossible to kill them. NOW, there is a fair and good chance to do so. But one final thing, @Wargaming, pls let the subs stay as an additional ship-type in the que, meaning, that there will always be 12 vs 12 PLUS subs... If they share their place with an other type, the HP pool will sink even more and thats realy realy bad for the game! (You could also do this mechanic for CVs ==>> 12+x+y vs 12+x+y ; x = subs, y = CVs.) Bigger overall healthpool = longer games!
From the comments you'd think they made submarines worthless... But I don't have many issues other than being unable to spot ships easily. That part doesn't make much sense. The whole point of submarines is to hide underwater and have only a periscope sticking out, why is it so hard to detect ships but get detected themselves within the same range? If you slow down does your detectability go down like it would IRL? Being able to detect where you're being pinged from is a good move. Ships should be able to hear the pings and their directions, especially if they had hydrophones.

In hunting and chasing Subs was still a relatively important job that was carried out by carriers up until about the late 80s.

@Lurking Carrier CVS are very balanced and require dedicated time and skill to master. Play tier 10 cv or tier 8 cv then tell me if CVS are overpowered. For some ships they have over powered Anti air.

They ruin it for destroyers by stealing the ability to do spotting damage and by routinely spotting destroyers when the latter are trying to cap a point or sneak around the side of a enemy formation. They ruin it for cruisers because their AP and HE bombs and torpedoes can do significant amounts of damage to said ships. Allonwg with this they can keep a cruiser spotted at a safe distance. Making said cruiser a good target for enemy battleships. Thwy ruin it for battleships because their hard hitting AP bombs and Torpedoes do huge amounts of damage. Along with this, you know how battleships have large turning circles? When a battleship needs to amuver he often will stop shooting to go unspotted and not show his broadside during the turn. But if he is spotted by aircraft he is under danger from enemy long range HE cruisers and AP salvos from enemy battleships. Meanwhile the CV is often inaccesible untill the end of the match. Allong with this they have crazy good damage control so it is hard to set them on fire or flood them.
I see two solutions to this problem. We need to either make it so that if you are spotted by CV you only appear on the mini-map and nerf the healing and damage control of CV's.

If you don't want Carriers in your game go back in time and tell the Wright Brothers not to event the plane. There is a reason why the Tier 10 CV named what it is. Google the Battle of Midway. Spotting by plane only to minimap isn't a solution. If you 're going to make radio transmission show up on mini map for CV you have to do it for all boats. Not going to work. You'd be crying in another post. Damage control of the CV is fine the way it is. Once you are in range, it's done for. Which is why they get damage control. You sound like a FPS player complaining about snipers and shotguns. It's part of the game, deal with it and get better.

You have to ping the same area twice. Just think how hard it would be to hit the same part of a ship twice. Torps are the only weapon submarines have, and seems like they will be very fragile. I don´t mind them having the deadliest torps in the game.

Playing subs is easy because you are basicly asked to stay at a average distance and torpedo snipe, nothing difficult in that, and in a situation where you have teamates, even the most stupid ones, you are most likely gonna be the last ship to get attacked because your teamates will be the one actually doing frontline work, which is something this game already lacks. but yeah add more stealth hunter.
And add this that subs will needlessly extend the lenght of battles by diving and doing nothing, which has already showed in testing.

the main problem is the absence of mechanic which requires subs to surface after given amount of time. This allows them to dive as long as they want and this will be beneficial to run down the clock especially if you're ahead on points

These crazy mechanics just show how submarines dont fit in this game. Submarines of ww2 era never were intended for fleet action, and rarely took part in such engagements. Look for some SH3/SH4 gameplay, just to get the idea.
Not to mention that countries used submarines totally differently from each other. U boats were commerce raiders that mostly attacked at night on the surface early in the war but transitioned to submerged attacks, where American boats were used like frigates, engaging mostly on the surface with guns because their torps were shit.
And battleships were never intended to fight constantly at point-blank ranges like in the game. The armor protection was to allow them to largely defeat incoming fire at longer ranges.
When it comes to making the gameplay fun vs. historically accurate, making it fun will always win out.

With the Sonar Ping mechanic, sounds like you're gonna have to be dead on to get that damage buff and ignore torp protection, so if enemy BB moves away and you hit different spot even slightly it won't work.
As with the detectability changes, that's good to know as you have to close in and be more vulnerable to torpedo, and hopefully the penalty of the battery is enough to make subs surface more.
Don't know why they couldn't just get rid of this homing bullshit and just increase torp damage.

This is a joke. Recharging underwater is a joke. You could allow snorkels at mid/higher tiers. Most WW2 subs barely managed 9 or 10 knots underwater. Obviously Type XXI was a brilliant exception on the underwater speed matter. It was actually slower surfaced, a most curious case of hull shape design.
Yeah sounds about right subs should only recharge when surfaced. But I think the idea of a snorkel to allow charging underwater be cool however I'd argue that the sub would need to be still in order to charge and also the charging underwater would be slower compared to above water meaning charging via snorkel be just a neat niche that comes in handy when it is too dangerous to surface.
It should only be possible to fire Torpedos at Periscop depth.

The biggest counterplay issue for CVs is not a lack of depth charges, it's the lack of ability to see the depth of a sub (they can't target lock onto anything). Thus you go for the bombs on a sub you or your team just spotted having no clue you could never hit it to begin with because it was 30-50m under. It's like trying to shoot at ships knowing only their direction and not range. I'm not asking for a balance change, just a UI one that allows people to see the depth of a spotted sub without locking on.
Add U-406 and add on launch failure mechanic.

I think you should change how Subs work underwater by having it so you use up charge underwater and you HAVE to surface to recharge the batteries I think this would make the Subs a bit more challenging to play because then players would have to learn when it's the most favorable time to surface and where they should use what and when.

My only request is that the deck guns work. I know they wont amount to much damage, but letting them set fires or cause minor damage to nearby surface ships could mean the difference between life and death. I enjoyed it when the first subs in the halloween event used theirs, how they acted more like secondary guns than primary. No matter how they're used, i still think deck guns while surfaced should be utilized somehow.

I started playing for the subs, I'm a big fan of sub warfare movies, "Run silent, Run deep" "Das Boot" and "U-571." I can't wait.
I do not understand why people complain, I prefer a thousand times that they put vehicles that if they existed like submarines, that branches of ships doubtfully existed in plans.
In addition to adding more variety compared to other more complete games and no one complains, it is the opposite. I think the problem is that everyone is afraid of the new. They are the typical ones who say before it was better, when in reality, now everyone can defend themselves from the sub are made of paper and they will have to face each other.
So subs still don't have to surface? Why not? Bring back oxygen supply and force them to surface after it's depleted. Also the anti sub warfare for cruisers and battleships still seems highly flawed: if the sub can see a ship from 9 km away, but the surface ship cannot detect it at that range, then what on earth do the planes help you? And since the sub is not forced to surface there is little you can do apart from turning away, especially if there is now DD to help. Sure, you could try to push in, but the sub is most likely not alone and with the citadeling torps that's suicide. Talking about the torps - they still turn waaaaay too fast. If they are able to citadel ships, they shouldn't be that maneuverable in my opinion. Obviously it's hard to judge from a video alone and I'll have to see how gameplay develops, but I'm afraid that I will stop playing for good when they get implemented into random battles.

They already have a counter... CV's start in the back of the map wich would take the sub 20-30 minutes to get too, and even if they do reach the CV the CV is faster than subs anyways.

Makes subs more reliable in an attack, gives more feedback to targeted enemies, and fixes the problem of DDs having to work even more by giving bigger ships the ability to call in extra support.

I think it'll swing the other way around now, and the Subs will have a really hard time managing much, kinda like DD's do now days with carriers, and like wise i think a sub that manages to scare people off caps and stay alive... that'll be really helpful at the end of game.
I'm an Alpha player, been here literally since, Day One and all I heard was "No Subs" over and over again. I'm glad WOW changed their minds, I think the Subs will add a new faucet to the game and attract more players. The PBY's are are a great touch and I look forward to the new additions! It would also be interesting to have Night Battles. The Game has come far and is only getting better...
If they do actually make it, THEY NEED TO HAVE THEIR OWN BATTLES!!

I think the homing itself should be completely removed. That way you can remove that complicated ping mechanic. In exchange, when a ship is detected by a submarine you can add a separate detected icon with a submarine icon and show which general direction they're from. Now, if that can't be removed, I highly disagree with the double ping bypassing torpedo protection. Torpedo protection is there for it's namesake. Not all ships can repair citadel damage. Seeing a Fuso calling in PBY's is just plain weird.
How many submarine per battle each team?

Edit: I guess it ain't that big a deal as 7 kilometers of hydrophone only applies to destroyers the natural predators of submarines who I guess should be able to out spot submarines. Gonna be really hard to carry with submarines though if your team can't keep the enemy destroyers away.
I think subs will have more of a support role. No real carry potential. But not everything needs carry potential.

Ain't really purposed for taking out everything that stands in their way but instead plans and positions to take out what they think what the most high value target on the enemies teams is for example that one veteran player the enemy team has. Kinda sounds like a CV but more dangerous however at the expense of risking their own ship if they are submerged away from their teammates and is tethered to a certain area of the map doesn't have that incredible reach of CV. Idk a little while after these changes we will find what makes the subs useful despite being downgraded to like an infiltrating support ship.

These changes are very good, lets be honest, in the previous one, subs were way too strong and without there counter (dds) it was nearly impossible to kill them. NOW, there is a fair and good chance to do so. But one final thing, @Wargaming, pls let the subs stay as an additional ship-type in the que, meaning, that there will always be 12 vs 12 PLUS subs... If they share their place with an other type, the HP pool will sink even more and thats realy realy bad for the game! (You could also do this mechanic for CVs ==>> 12+x+y vs 12+x+y ; x = subs, y = CVs.) Bigger overall healthpool = longer games!
From the comments you'd think they made submarines worthless... But I don't have many issues other than being unable to spot ships easily. That part doesn't make much sense. The whole point of submarines is to hide underwater and have only a periscope sticking out, why is it so hard to detect ships but get detected themselves within the same range? If you slow down does your detectability go down like it would IRL?
Being able to detect where you're being pinged from is a good move. Ships should be able to hear the pings and their directions, especially if they had hydrophones.
Was a dumb idea back then, still a dumb idea now.
This is going to be a huge mess if these are ever put into random battles
