  • SO ANNOYING ! Our Watch Pet Peeves ! feat: TGV from The Urban Gentry
    In this episode of Federico Talks Watches I am joined once again by TGV from The Urban Gentry. Today we discuss our most annoying pet peeves when it comes to watches. Things we wish watchmakers would stop doing. Such as using pins instead of screws in bracelets and making lugs a very awkward size. Let us know what your biggest watch pet peeves are!

      Uhm I don't think so. Because all the Watches that cost some thousands have a worth of maybe 300-500 Euro :D If you are interested in the Technology behind the watches you will see that Brands like Rolex, Breitling etc. are so cheap like Iphone, Adidas or other Brands of different Products. And all the people (excuse me) buy that shit for much money and nothing stand behind the Brand. Simple Rule: "We buy things we don't need, to impress people we don't like"

    Keep Me Where the Light Is. I followed John Mayer to HODINKEE "Talking Watches" quite some time ago. Then fell down the horological rabbit hole and eventually found TGV and then Federico. I love HODINKEE as entertainment and a great source of information, but I don't live in that neighborhood. You guys, on the other hand, are much more relatable and also highly informative and entertaining at the same time. I love your vids, am a Subscriber to both of your channels, and thank you both for the great information you provide. Keep up the great job!

    Good video guys. I hate the lack of micro adjustment on bracelet clasps. Not particular to any brand, I have a number of watches with this "problem". e.g. my Eterna Kontiki which probably has one of the best quality bracelet/clasp combos I have come across can become a bit tight in the summer.

    The box that comes with the Frederique Constant Runabout is pretty ridiculous, but it comes with a nice model boat.
    My big pet peeves are a date window on a vintage style watch, especially if it's in an awkward location on the dial, like at 4 o'clock, and dress watches bigger than 40mm.

    • @FedericoTalksWatches
      @FedericoTalksWatches  7 лет назад

      Yeah I feel you on the date window... I wonder how much less the watch would cost if they didnt include the boat

    1. Big boxes. Why on earth do I get huge boxes? What am I going to do with them, build a barricade?
    2. No AR-coating, especially on sports watches. Really, Rolex? Really?
    3. Price increases. We've been an Omega-family since the 50's, we know the price of these things.

    5:45 I made that mistake putting a 20 mm nato on a 22mm lug. It acted like a strap wrench and pulled the bottom pin out. The strap slid up and when placed under tension gripped the pin. Then when it slid down it carried the middle of the pin with it compressing the bottom spring and allowing the relaxed top spring tip to jump out of the lug hole.

    Pet peeve of mine is mismatching date wheel colour and dial colour. The Omega Aqua Terra with the "white" dial is guilty of this. Because of the teak effect the dial can look cream coloured whilst the date wheel is pure white. They have a similar problem with the black dial version which, to my eyes, sometimes can look dark brown. This version has the black date wheel and the two almost never look the same colour!

    One thing that really gets me is a poor bracelet on a £500+ watch. Two things: Hollow end links and cheap stamped clasps! The Tag F1 GMT has a horrible cheap clasp and hollow end links, on a watch of that price? Not on!

  • @1000lightyrs
    @1000lightyrs 7 лет назад

    Sorry Federico, I switched off soon as I heard your first peev. Pins are awesome. I've adjusted literally dozens of Omega, TAGHeuer etc. They are very secure, and I've done it all with a 10 buck watch tool set I picked up from Hong Kong! Omega screws - now those thing are MAJOR peeves. Stupid tiny little things that can easily be butchered or lost (Grand Seiko the same). But if you're gonna go with screws, do it like Rolex - those are nice big meaty screws. But having said that, I've even had a Rolex screw that wouldn't budge (on a 2006 Explorer), whereas I've NEVER had a pin I couldn't carefully tap out with my $10 tool set!

    This is one which has less to do with the watches themselves and more with actually wearing a watch: the crud (oils, dead skin, god knows what) that builds up in watch bracelets and casebacks. I feel like I only need to wear a watch for a week or two before it appears. I should wash it away, but if the watch isn't fully water proof, it's a bit of a hassle.

    I don't get watch brands that offer the same watch in 44mm and the same watch in 41mm at exactly the same price point. If your getting less material you should pay less. I understand people have different wrist sizes. Brietling is a perfect example. With the Colt automatic and in the super oceans. Love the watches. Just not the price points sometimes.

    I suspect that the main reason Patek don't put screws in their 5711 is so that we have to go back to the dealers and get them resized, instead of doing it themselves with screws.

    My wrist is just under 8 inches. I have big forearms that I think makes the watch look just fine on me. The watch is large but I don't find it clownish. #1 most annoying pet peeve... When the watch hasn't been finely tuned at the factory, and you have a watch that runs too fast or too slow. And you have to adjust the time every couple of days.

  • @5RustyBin
    @5RustyBin 7 лет назад +1

    just thought of another ;) - to draw an analogy between the watch and car industries.... Many car manufacturers to get your business offer "first service free" - now wouldn't THAT be nice on an entry level Rolex?And another - when brands market a 38mm watch as a ladies range (Breitling transocean 38 and Omega Speedy automatic are examples). If the watch looks good on you its unisex for god sake.Omega planet Ocean also has NO clasp adjustment at all - just a diver extension of 2 full links - so its 2 full links or nothing which is hopeless frankly.

      its the micro adjustmet to allow comfort from wrist expansion due to heat that I mean. On holiday 90 degrees in and out pool - your wrist does swell. bracelet sizing and clasp micro adjustment are different things

    • @FedericoTalksWatches

      Movement architecture... That is the only reason... Maybe the way the movement was designed just didnt allow for it... Not a good excuse though

    Size-wise, exactly - size for function. I'm with TGV on the oddball lug width sizes. I had a Chopard Mille Miglia and it's 19mm width drove me nuts. One that annoys me is non-drilled lugs. Drilled lugs make changing straps so easy. And - to me - they don't ruin the look. Take a look at Grand Seiko for example - drilled lugs and they look fine. Ciao, John

    We share many pet peeves. One that i wanted to mention is when people exclusively use wrist size to determine appropriate size of the watch, completely forgetting body size and built that does not always fully coincides with wrist size. Also when determining watch size people do not take into consideration type of watch (dress, diver, pilot, field...) And I get totally pissed when people compare (duel) watches from two different levels (Sinn and Seiko fan boys are frequent culprits) . Love you videos buddy! BIG LIKE!

    Propietary lugs . Thickness . Size .... Why in the world a dress watch would come with an automatic movement ; hand winding the watch is part of the ritual of dressing up un wearing it , besides , that makes the watch unnecessarily thick for the cuffs . That stupid crownlike thing on the left side of the Omega Seamaster .

  • @lshin80
    @lshin80 7 лет назад +5

    It really pisses me off that watches nowadays are oriented towards big sizes. A dress watch should not be too showy... a 40mm dress watch is ok for large wrists, but on a 6 inches wrist it looks inappropriate.
    So each dress watch shoud be available in at least two differents sizes for different wrists (e.g. 36mm and 40mm).

    SO ANNOYING...when the "Watcherati" mispronounce Patek--and props here to Federico for getting it right! Antoni Patek was Polish, not French or Swiss. His first company was Patek Czapek, pronounced PAH-teck CHAH-peck. They made pocket watches designed with Polish historical themes. Frenchman Phillippe came in much later. We Poles don't get a whole lot of credit for much, so at least pronounce the man's name correctly. Baseball fans, think of KC Royals legend Freddie Patek to get it right. (We'll give TGV a pass since he's half Brit-half Italian and all mixed up.)

    I recently got a Speedmaster Professional It is my first luxury watch. I am the second owner, but my Speedy is in mint condition. Like you discussed, it doesn't hack, which I think is a little disappointing.. Also, it comes in the special presentation box, which I love! Yes, it is big, but it definitely adds to the experience, for me that is.. However I can understand that some people prefer a smaller standard box.

    It is super annoying how some watches don't have half links on the bracelet! With those watches, it either fits or it doesn't.

    How about when watch makers use large sub dials which partly cover the numerals and instead of designing their way out of it they just butcher the number. It,s a form of design illiteracy. It,s akin to a photo in a magazine obscuring the text because they were too incompetent to re size either the image or the text. !!

    The size of a watch to me should match its use and style, I agree some watches look ridiculous, no matter who is wearing it.

    My biggest Pet peeve is the mispronunciation of German words:
    Glashütte -> glaas hooota
    Lange Und Söhne -> long eh oond souhne

    I don't like when subdials cut too much of the hour markers. I don't like watches over $150 that don't have sapphire crystals. Orient I can forgive with the Bambino, but Junghans? I love you but shame! I don't like low lume on my watches. Every watch should have tritium or SuperLuminova equivalent. The exception is full-lume dials because I don't wanna wear a flashlight on my wrist. Side Note: My favorite watch packaging is Cartier with the red boxes. 100% lovely.
