Prue in her final episode gives me major Scarlet Witch vibes, once she lost Piper and was unsure of Phoebe's wellbeing, she seemingly gave up everything except her impulsiveness. And seemingly having lost everything, her recklessness made her slowly descend into madness and chaos, and honestly I adored it, wish we could've gotten an entire season with her just turning evil and batshit crazy
Now that you mention i think she would really portray the witch well like in animated series that ive known. The fierce, confidence, spunk while also capable of tenderness. No shade but i think olsen version in movies is always giving low energy, moody, guarded and always too passive or motherly and sad vibes for the wanda role that i known, but she is an amazing actress, just think she should be more suited for character like Jean or other
Good comparison there. Sadly Elizabeth Olsen had to contend with Joss Whedon writing her debut film (he apparently wanted a different actress and she'd already been cast) and there wasn't a whole lot of direction for her character up until Multiverse of Madness where she really got to shine.
I mean it looked cool as fuck when piper did it in the alternate universe Cole and Paige episode and Ngl I think Shannon could play a badass better than piper. So like imagine if they killed off piper or Phoebe and she went to a rly dark place like piper did, and we just got a whole season for her demon hunting.
In contrast, Prue losing it reminds me a bit of Willow (from Buffy TVS), as the demise of a loved one sometimes is the key to letting oneself to lose control or respect for the rules (the rules and the status quo did nothing to save or preserve a life) while falling into the powerful grieving emotions. I understand why the character was compared to Carrie too in this video-essay.
A tiny detail that I just LOVE in this episode is after Leo finds out about Piper's death, and he's crying, when Prue yells at him to go, he stands up like a soldier before orbing out. I don't know if that was Shannen's choice or Bryan's but it's SUCH a brilliant character moment for Leo and chokes me up every time
I love that I'm not the only one that caught onto that. I served in the military and so I always related with Leo and when I first saw this scene I immediately said he is following an order given as he is a soldier first.
Prue had one of my favorite subtle arcs in season 3. In season 1 she had several roles she was able to balance: Her love-life, family, work and destiny as a witch. As the seasons went on, she seemed to have somewhat of an identity crisis with every single one of these roles. She's a freelancer (which proved somewhat successful but hardly the safe routine of her previous job), she's single while her younger sisters are in serious relationships and then at the final episode she loses a sister. The tragedy is that in her final moments in the show, we see her let go of that last remaining part of her life she had kept in control: being a protector of the innocent. Every aspect of Prue's life that she had control over in Season 1, slipped out of her fingers by the end. She went from an alpha, superhero rolemodel to attacking civilians in her way.
Seeing how far Prue was wiling to go to protect her family, makes me wonder if the Elders _let_ her die. Piper addresses how absurd it is that they've come back from death multiple times, but they can't bring their sister back _this time?_ Maybe this was the Elders quelling what could have been a very dangerous, rouge witch from their view.
@@BetterWithBob Oooooh that's an interesting idea! I can't see her being too fond of the Elders (much like Piper) so I could completely see this happening.
Ooh it would've been so cool to see villain Prue. And so true how you're mentioning that Doherty directing her swan song is an interesting way to think about the way she saw Prue and her reflecting on her own past actions in it. Gah that Piper death scene does always hurts!
There's a podcast I saw a transcript of where Holly says that she was pushing to leave midway through the season and didn't get 'the call' until the end. So she may have already had it in the back of her mind :O
If you pay close attention to SHAX’s first time saying “the end” it was a huge and eerie foreshadow for the episode’s cliffhanger/conclusion as well as a foreshadow of the first Charmed ones. 😢 This episode was done so damn well and I remember watching it on the WB for the first time in shock and awe especially at the Shax scenes. That summer of 2001 I was in agony of what’s to come.
Oh yeah I caught that on the most recent rewatch. The next episode reveals that the Source gets visions from the Oracle, so it wouldn't be surprising if Shax was sent for that reason.
That episode made me ballin hard. One of the best episodes ever. I was so bummed knowing Doherty was leaving the show and there was no place for hope she gets revived somehow.
Of course Shannen directed this episode, Shannen is the one who wanted the show to continue on with darker elements and dive deeper into the witchcraft while the producers wanted to focus on the love interest and all that bs. This was the original discrepancy that pushed Shannen off the show. Many think It was because of her and Alyssa, but that was a SMALL part of her leaving, a huge part was the focus on the love storylines. I love this video because It was the first huge exploration of the dark side of the charmed ones, except the other episode in season 3 where the witch turns them evil. This is who Prue’s character was, bold, assertive and in a way still the leader even in death.
She was also fed up with the constant changing of producers, writers etc and how the network wasn't giving the studio the money they needed for all the stunts and special effects. But the press of course isn't going to report on that because a co-stars feud is what sells magazines, regardless of how embellished it is
@@BetterWithBob you just earned a new subscriber. I like smart people. Hope to see some more videos soon, you should do one on my favorite episodes of the entire franchise, when Phoebe becomes the queen of all evil. Probably my favorite character arc on this show, mainly because Phoebe like Wyatt was the only one born in the charmed house and under the nexus making her more prone to evil!
@@ronjay7831 season 4 is my favorite charmed season out of ALL the seasons lol. I love the transitions, love the story writing and character arcs. Love It
I loved this!! I never realized how Prue‘s character was being deconstructed in All Hell Breaks Loose. Will you talk about more charmed episodes in the future?
Always was my favourite episode. Not just for Prue, which was one hell of a way to go, but I thought it was interesting for Leo and Piper too. Piper has died the most on the show, rounding up to around 9 or 10 technical deaths in total, but this one was different. It's as you said in the video. Piper wasn't killed instantly by magic: she was shot and died a slow, painful, mortal kind of death. When Leo saved Piper every other time, there were very small pockets of time between her injuries and his healing them, and he was always able to hear her calls. But because he was out-of-reach, and because her death was a slow one, there was time to heal her, but all that time was spent on Phoebe's demon-boyfriend shit. In his mind, he could've been around to save Piper and spare her all that pain, but wasn't. And when you remember that one of the last things he said to her before that was 'they're (the elders) not the ones who screwed up', a dig at their failure, it feels all the more terrible. Piper and Leo weren't always the perfect couple-hell, they were both downright toxic at times, they had this amazing love story that everyone could get on-board with. But even though Piper has ultimately proven that she could survive if she lost Leo, it's pretty clear that Leo couldn't survive if he lost Piper. Death is not new to him, but neither is loss. He barely gets enough time to kiss Piper goodbye before Prue sends him away to 'make things right'. Imagine all that emotion and pain if he actually had the time to process it? Chris's death was enough to turn him against everything he knew and stood for, Piper's death could have the potential to drive him to insanity. Piper was my favourite sister and I wouldn't want her to die, but I would've loved to have been witness to that alternative universe as well. She was an integral part of the show, and the impact she's had on other characters would certainly affect their arcs in later seasons. I could see Prue turning into an even bigger demon hunter, Phoebe losing her buffer in the family feuds, Leo going absolutely insane and Paige facing the same story she did in the main story. Either way, it would've been interesting.
That's a really fascinating point. You're absolutely right that Leo would never be able to take losing Piper. We do get some shades of that in Chris's alternate future, where she's been dead for years and Leo is even more distant from his children, but that would have been intriguing to see play out.
The alt. Universe I feel could’ve been interesting is a prue, piper and paige-prue having a similar relationship w/ paige as she did phoebe while mourning the loss of her baby sister who just started figuring out who she was and getting her life on track
@@friendlyotter60 That could've been an interesting alternative universe: it could've even been a reality, had they chosen to keep Shannen Doherty instead of Alyssa Milano. We'll never get that onscreen sadly but there's always fanfic-provided you find any good ones.
It's also really interesting that Piper gets at least 2 deaths not from magic. This one, and the one in Awakened. I always think the deaths not caused by the supernatural are the most moving ones in the show.
Those were some great observations! Prue was always my fave character and I felt she was underrated, but your descriptions of her "take charge" attitude and always running first into a situation with "guns blazing" are spot on. Her love for her sisters was immeasurable and the glue that held the Haliwell sisters together. Even though the show went on for 5 more seasons, it didn't take a rocket scientist to see that the chemistry was gone with Prue/Shannen's departure. It was like having Christmas after the matriarch of the family passed; sure, the rest of the family is still there and having a good time, but you can feel that void in the room. CHARMED was still good afterward, but it never got back on the path after Prue's death. Methinks Shax's "The end" was prophetic on more than one level.
I suppose I have a different view on it since my first experience of Charmed was the Paige Era. I just enjoy both as 'different' rather than better or worse.
You know what I'm missing from this episode? So that the iconic photo of the sisters fell and broke! ( The photo that Grams took!) It would be very symbolic! Especially since this photo has never been shown again!
It wouldn't have hurt for them to show the photo frame from the back and have Piper and Phoebe show it to Paige and describe it as a photo of the 3 of them. But that photo was never mentioned at all even during the Prue era, except in flashback. We never learned whether the sisters noticed they'd changed position in it.
This is one of the wildest episode I’ve ever seen in my life, when I watch it for the first time, everyone was tweaking. Like seriously this episode went from 0 to 100 when piper got sniped in GTA, and pure starts crashing out against the innocence. What a fire episode 🔥🔥🔥
I always wondered (obviously not including the real out of show reasons), if Prue was killed as a consequence for mis-using her magic and harming innocents on the way to get Piper to the hospital. They always warned of the dire consequences that would come with personal gain, but here we see her go full-on manic using her magic to harm multiple innocent people, death seems like it would be the only consequence for such an action regardless of whether we agree with what she did or not.
Didn't time reverse though? It went back to the moment Prue and Piper was with the doctor before Shax appeared so them exposing their magic didn't happen.
@BalletBullet1 Yes but it didn't effect the underworld so the theory is it didn't effect the elders either, so they enacted the personal gain punishment.
The saddest episode. Amazingly done, at the top level. By actors, director and whole staff. It makes an impression even years after you saw it for the first time. That's really sad Prue has died here, Shannon is a great actress and the fact that she can also be a pretty good director makes her a true professional, she could offer a lot to the show but had to leave, unfortunately
Shannen acted her fucking ass off in this episode, especially the final 15 minutes. The moment Piper gets shot, it's an emotional roller coaster and she pulls it off in spades.
Shannen not knowing that this would be her last episode hits differently watching it. I wonder how they would’ve brought the sisters back in the 4th season
I watched this episode on tv. When the doors slammed at end and broke I was done. This was like early 2000s before mid season finale and having to wait for a new season for yrs lol. My teenage brain thought my family member died when Piper died it hurt
Love this flash-back to 2001. It was a GREAT episode! I forgot that Shannon D. directed it herself. Prue was my FAV character, I loved her. I was crushed to see her go...but she went out SO WELL! Thank you for this walk down memory lane. XOXO
This was just a great Anatomy of an Episode installment. I never thought about how the episode was a deconstruction of Prue, but watching her unravel was so fascinating.
These last episodes really broke my heart such a wonderful actress it's a shame she ever left the show and they should have made something for her days come back as a spirit or angel I just really enjoyed her work. Shannen Doherty is a wonderful actress and she really put a lot of life into her work!
I'm watching All Hell Breaks Loose right now, and Prue, using her powers to move the innocents out of the way, was a smart decision, because she was trying to save her sister, and the innocents were being assholes.
Don't you find it interesting that their cat died right around the time Shannen left the show? After all, the last time we saw her was in an episode with Banshee.
She comes back in Season 5 revealing that she was rewarded with a human form for her years of being the Charmed Ones' familiar. And some dialogue from Paige implies she was hanging around her loft for a while, guiding her in her early days as a witch. I assume once Paige moved in with Piper and Phoebe she left for good since they didn't need her anymore.
@@BetterWithBob In the 5th season, this role was already performed by another cat, and it was quite noticeable! In addition, we are not talking about a character, but about an actor (an actor is a cat). The cat did die at the end of season 3 and they decided not to replace it with another cat. Only in the 5th season did they bring her back for one episode to explain to the audience where she disappeared to. Because all that time she was not mentioned at all.
Realizing that two supernatural themed shows have had season finale episodes titled All Hell Breaks Loose, and in those episodes, a main character dies. Here, it's Piper Halliwell, and in Supernatural, it was Sam Winchester. It also shows two other main characters sacrificing themselves, to save them. Phoebe Halliwell, by agreeing to stay in the Underworld as her payment for the Source to get Tempus to turn back time. Dean Winchester, by selling his soul to a crossroads demon to resurrect Sam.
More than that: in both cases the older sibling makes a deal with a demon to resurrect the younger sibling, and it results in the older sibling dying instead.
There is so much to this episode and Prue this season. From the very first episode, Prue had this eerie feeling of paranoia (she tossed Phoebe when she was in the attic). Even in this episode, Prue kept having an eerie feeling, about Shax. For mean I have always felt death was looming for Prue and she could sense it. It’s fitting this season both sisters get active powers to protect them, making their need for Prue start to diminish. I know this was not the intention of the series but looking back on it, from the start it feels like Prue was always destined to die. This is truly the best Episode of the series and a fitting end to such a beloved character.
I love that fact that, instead of the trope of a character snapping, due to a minor inconvenience after so many things go wrong, Prue is made to snap when Piper is shot by a crazy woman.
If I remember correctly, this finale ep was shown in the Philippines back to back with Season 4's first ep. And I watched Season 4's first ep thinking Prue would come back eventually -- through some unexpected plot twist -- but she didn't. Then around that week, I heard the news on the radio that Rose had replaced Shannen. I was heartbroken. I've had a crush on Shannen since 90210.
I love this episode. I remember seeing this on TV and left me curious on what’s going to happen next. I guess it was time for the show to come up with something new for the next season since the story plot every week is always the same. Love Prue and Paige.
Gotta say, love the episode just wish they had followed things up a bit more clearly. As a young child growing up with this show I was extremely confused when I ended season 3 and started season 5 box set…
I don't like the season where Kaley Cuoco comes on. It's the worse season. And they already went out a limb with the 4th sister Paige. But we love Paige and she was success and it was a right fit. When Penny came in that's when my interest waned. There was a disconnect. Not with rose McGowan character though
i never realised that the passing of prue kinda splits the show between the 20th and the 21st century (she passed in late 2001 and centuries technically start on the '01 years) Growing up with the show it never clicked that this was prue's last (charmed again didn't air that much when i grew up and the mourning theme of season 4 went under my radar) so i never grasped the finale-ness of this episode but it always felt like an epic and one of the most memorable ones, i think it's that first one i remember watching (not the first i saw, but the first i remember)
I always thought the scene where she is trying to get piper to the hospital but is blocked by everyone would've been the PERFECT time for her powers to evolve in some sort of pain-invoked telekinetic radius blast blowing EVERYONE out of the way.. like when she astral projected for the first time because she was under pressure to be in two places at once, and the glimpse of what a flick of her finger could do to the attic in the future combined with the desperation to save her sister. Wasted opportunity I think
Although that would look pretty cool, it wouldn't be as effective to show how desperate she is. Sure, having a character discover a power by that power suddenly helping/saving them is always a good surprise. But here, Prue is determined to save her sister, and she chooses to use her power to hurt anyone who would prevent her from doing that. That makes much more sense, rather than having a new power doing the job for her while she's like "I didn't mean to do that, but lucky me"
This episode was when I felt the most connected to Prue. With out her guise on. She acts in a way I would. I love my family. Nothing would stop me from protecting. In the emotional flurry that is near death. I would probably do the same things she did there.
I would’ve loved to see Prue descend into Madness after Season 3 😈 Watching her take on The Government, The Source (4 payback) & whoever else got In her way not to mention finding out about Paige It could’ve been ICONIC 🎊🥳🎉
This episode is definitely one of the best in the series shannon did a great job directing the episode I was shocked watching the ending it was a great sendoff for pure
OKAY! it reminds me of the time Piper froze a demon before he crashed into the grandfather clock and she's like "we can't keep replacing that thing" that would a been me everytime lol. 😂
I watched this episode here in Mexico a year after the premiere of the fourth season in the USA and even though I had read that Prue was going to die, when I watched this episode I was very impressed, I did not know that this episode was the last of Shannen Doherty . I remember watching these scenes feeling shocked. When I watched the first episode of the fourth season I was taken aback of course
I love this episode because at this point, it hadn’t been decided on which sister would die, also I feel That this episode was supposed to have lead to a larger arc, we know that the Cole arc was changed completely in season 5 I also felt that Prue was on the onset of a larger arc in season 4, and we see some of this with Paige in season 4. Shannen is a fantastic actress as is Holly as Piper, they’re the best actresses on the show in my opinion.
I did manage to come up with some headcanon to rationalize it lol. They always said the Charmed Ones were good for covering up their own exposure risks, and the Cleaners also can't shift the balance of power because of their neutrality. The only way to remove the exposure would be to erase Prue and Piper, which would shift the balance of power to Evil. Resetting time was a solution that would benefit as many people on both sides as possible. And the fact that this is 2001, with the internet and more widespread coverage than ever before, with the Charmed Ones also only being around for three years after being inactive since 1975 - so it's possible the Cleaners never had to deal with an exposure risk that widespread before.
it would be amazing to see some back stage footage from the making of this episode, I think this is the best episode ever, (except for it being Shannen's last episode of course).
I think this is just as fine as the superb BTVS episode The Wish, and a bleak commentary on media hysteria. The cast also all bring their A game. I do wonder if Leo's crack that 'dog' Pru should be a doberman in the previous episode is an equally sly comment on Doherty's then reputation! She proved she was a great director as well as actress. RIP.
I feel like people forget that when Leo comes to heal Piper and Prue after time resets, he’s probably emotional from seeing Piper dead/by the time he gets there it’s possible Prue is already gone, but like his emotions and the knowledge he has of what happens I’m sure affected his actions. Like maybe after time reset and he got there he just had tunnel vision for Piper because like he knew what had happened.
Also, Prue went through the wall head first before Piper, whereas Piper seems to hit it shoulder first. And it's already longer than the original timeline by the time Leo presumably gets there, so Prue may have died by severe head trauma while Piper was just about hanging in there
Yeah, I cheered when I watched that scene 21 years ago where she just unleashes her power on the people. They were so annoying. Especially that reporter.
I can only imagine a what if final season would’ve looked liked if they asked (or begged) Shannen back and Prue was the final evil her sisters had to conquer. Conflict between the sisters, Prue going full warlock. Would’ve been a killer season with right writing.
It's difficult to call Prue the antagonist of the episode as she's doing her Charmed duty, protecting the innocent. It's just unfortunate that their actions had unforseen consequences
This was a great finale but I wish they'd kept Shannon on and did the fourth season how it was intended to be. Paige is a great character but I really wanted to see how things played out like who comes to save them, will Phoebe be evil, will Prue and Piper be furious at Phoebe because had she just moved on from Cole and focused on the task at hand it wouldn't have happened, Prue mental health being an arc after the elders send an angel to have her memory restored of the original timeline to show her the dangers and maybe an episode where a dark Prue emerges from her and she has to battle this other her, Piper taking lead due to Prue and Phoebe not speaking much and tired of being the middle sister.
I mentioned this in earlier comments on videos that got released later than this one but it's kinda ironic to me that you wanted to see an arc with Prue as the villain and that actually happened in the comics^^
Great observation about this last episode of Prue being all about her "mask" being taken off. She went the whole show being the one in control, the responsible one, the cerebral one, etc. This episode, she went into survival mode with IDGAF energy - it was all about protecting her sisters.
Something i never understood: if the Source resets time doesn't that mean the demon wouldn't know to detain Cole and kill Phoebe in the new timeline? Does resetting time not also reset it in the underworld too?
What pisses me off about this episode is the fact that years later you learn about magic school and such and realize the white lighters were pricks they could have orbed them out until time was reverted
The first time I watched this episode I already knew about the death since the show had been out for a few years at the time. I didn't think it would affect me that much since I already knew it was coming and I always heard it happened "off screen". However, I remember seeing the end and I remember suddenly being like "wow I can't believe she's really gone." It wasn't seeing her character on the ground motionless, but seeing the image of those doors close without her and seeing the glass shatter. It was surprisingly a very powerful way to let her fate be known.
I saw an interview with Shannen where she said none of the crew thought she was actually going to leave and they were saying things like "you're going through that wall a bit too hard" or "there's too much blood" but she was deliberately directing it with an air of finality
It’s been confirmed by Shannen that leaving the show was not her choice and she didn’t find out she wasn’t coming back until the summer just a few weeks before filming for the next season began. Shannen says that she would’ve gone bigger if she knew she was directing her final episode. I wonder what that would’ve looked like. I also think it’s interesting that Phoebe/Alyssa who was the issue behind the scenes was barely in any scenes with her sisters during that final episode.
this wasnt the first time she used her powers on innocents, in chick flick she did in the movie theater. i also dont see any fatalities in the scene where she used her powers in the driveway
This really is the best episode of the series. The complete deconstruction of Prue Halliwell should be taught in colleges. You explained it so beautifully.
Bob, do you think The Cleaners agreed to let Prue die to reverse the exposure risk, or worse, punish her for hurting/killing innocents? It’s still a neutral move on their part because Prue, Phoebe and Leo agreed first to make the deal with the Source and Tempus, which sadly led to Prue’s death.
I always thought Prue was extremely relatable in her turn in this episode. She was bringing Piper to the car and it was as if, suddenly, she saw the madness for what it was... madness. It was not longer quippy "Barbara makes you cry" And she tries to tell them to move, and realizes no one will move. She no longer sees them as innocents. She sees them as all complicit. Complicit in the creation of the chaos that caused her sister to be shot. So she does what they always do as she vanquishes the evil. I also always thought it was interesting how SWAT was there, just waiting in the wings for them to do something dangerous. It shows how, in some ways, the situation was doomed from the start. Once they were exposed, there was nothing they could do to avoid disaster.
It's also interesting to think about the ways that Piper ends up on a similar character arc as Prue in the later seasons. She feels invincible (and is for a while). She feels like she's the most powerful. She just wants to fight evil (to a self destructive degree). In a lot of ways, we actually see that it almost doesn't matter which sister is the oldest, middle, and youngest. They function the same. We get Phoebe changing from a carefree wild child to the emotional middle man, taking care of both her younger and older sister. We get Piper, the powerful and foolhardy older sister. And Paige, the younger free spirited "sexy" sister.
My mother loved Charmed, followed this show with her shit got me into it. I remember watching this as a kid and being shooooook! I was big sad! Great ep!
There is a long standing rumor this was a two part episode, but was hastily re-edited when Shannon was abruptly fired. Please help! And why was there no updated promos of the cast for seaSon 3? Please help!
i just thought about it, why did the sisters go through all this trouble helping the doctor from Shacks(spelling?) when he couldn't save Piper? Like Prue said, they were saving him because Shax was after him becasuse he was going to save a life that it didn't want to save. Maybe that life was his or Pipers. who knows.
Possibly Dr Griffiths was a decoy and Shax was really supposed to go after the Charmed Ones. The Source seemed to have the Oracle helping him out for that
I think it's interesting that you can tell a lot about a person's personality on whether their pro Prue or pro Phoebe. I once got into a friendly heated discussion over how Prue was the best and Phoebe sucked.
I take this episode and the last 3 from Game of Thrones and place them into things that don't make sense. The abandonment of Prue's arc and also having Phoebe be incredibly selfish in a time of danger.
I don't think Phoebe was being selfish. They thought Shax was dead and Dr Griffiths was safe, and Cole was an innocent in need of help, so she went down to the Underworld once she thought it was all clear. She then had to stay down there for the time being because she was in danger from exposure up there.
I do actually have a headcanon that explains why they wouldn't have intervened: They have to stay neutral and the only way to erase the exposure risk would be to erase Prue and Piper...which would shift the balance of power to Evil. So the Elders went with Tempus resetting time as a solution that would benefit everyone. I think it's said that this reset of time would kill Tempus because he was in a weakened state from the last time. So this time around they don't have that safety net. And if you think about it, the Charmed Ones didn't have their powers reawakened until 1998, and this happens in 2001, now with widespread news coverage and live TV and the internet - so possibly the Cleaners had never had an exposure risk this big before, and weren't sure what to do about it.
@@BetterWithBob well never thought of it like that still feel cheated how we never seeing Prue actually die season 4 was confusing having another sister was possible from season 2 when we learn that Patty had affair with her white lighter so that was fine with me but I guess its all just a rumour about a part 2 of hell break lose was made.
The best episode of the entire series being directed by Shannen is poetic justice to me
Prue in her final episode gives me major Scarlet Witch vibes, once she lost Piper and was unsure of Phoebe's wellbeing, she seemingly gave up everything except her impulsiveness.
I love this comparison!
I don't know if that was Shannen's choice or Bryan's but it's SUCH a brilliant character moment for Leo and chokes me up every time
Ooh that's interesting. I didn't pick up on that :O
That's a really interesting point actually
Seeing how far Prue was wiling to go to protect her family, makes me wonder if the Elders _let_ her die. Piper addresses how absurd it is that they've come back from death multiple times, but they can't bring their sister back _this time?_ Maybe this was the Elders quelling what could have been a very dangerous, rouge witch from their view.
I always wondered similar about Penny's death. Since she was about to strip the Charmed Ones' powers, the heart attack seemed a bit too convenient.
@@BetterWithBob Oooooh that's an interesting idea! I can't see her being too fond of the Elders (much like Piper) so I could completely see this happening.
@@LaviniaDeMortalium that’s really dark if you think about it
But y?
how i hate the elders existence
Ooh it would've been so cool to see villain Prue. And so true how you're mentioning that Doherty directing her swan song is an interesting way to think about the way she saw Prue and her reflecting on her own past actions in it. Gah that Piper death scene does always hurts!
There's a podcast I saw a transcript of where Holly says that she was pushing to leave midway through the season and didn't get 'the call' until the end. So she may have already had it in the back of her mind :O
if you can read the charmed comics, season ten particuarly
If you pay close attention to SHAX’s first time saying “the end” it was a huge and eerie foreshadow for the episode’s cliffhanger/conclusion as well as a foreshadow of the first Charmed ones. 😢
This episode was done so damn well and I remember watching it on the WB for the first time in shock and awe especially at the Shax scenes. That summer of 2001 I was in agony of what’s to come.
Oh yeah I caught that on the most recent rewatch. The next episode reveals that the Source gets visions from the Oracle, so it wouldn't be surprising if Shax was sent for that reason.
yes Shax was so fucking scary
That episode made me ballin hard. One of the best episodes ever. I was so bummed knowing Doherty was leaving the show and there was no place for hope she gets revived somehow.
Piper has always been my favorite sister witch. Prue grieving for her in the end tears me up everytime. Kudos to Shannon for her performance.
She acted her ASS off, especially the final 15 minutes.
It's funny because Season 4 ended up being dark
@@ronjay7831 season 4 is my favorite charmed season out of ALL the seasons lol. I love the transitions, love the story writing and character arcs. Love It
@@COSMICCFREQUENCY144 i love season 2 the most, but season 4 is really great
I loved this!! I never realized how Prue‘s character was being deconstructed in All Hell Breaks Loose.
Will you talk about more charmed episodes in the future?
New Charmed video ruclips.net/video/2Z8eKoepL1A/видео.html
Thats ridiculous.
@Kate Maloney totally totally agree!!!
You know what I'm missing from this episode? So that the iconic photo of the sisters fell and broke! ( The photo that Grams took!) It would be very symbolic! Especially since this photo has never been shown again!
You are so correct! I just realized I never noticed the picture again. Great eyes!
@@katemaloney4296 This photo was never shown again because they didn't want to pay Shannen to use her image
It wouldn't have hurt for them to show the photo frame from the back and have Piper and Phoebe show it to Paige and describe it as a photo of the 3 of them. But that photo was never mentioned at all even during the Prue era, except in flashback. We never learned whether the sisters noticed they'd changed position in it.
that photo was last seen on S3 E17 “Pre Witched” after that it was never shown again
This really was one of the best episodes ever 😭
I never understood why Darryl didn't go check on Prue and Piper after Crazy Alice shot into their house. That always bugged me.
Ooh never thought of that. Perhaps he was busy detaining her and assumed the sisters could handle it.
He was arresting along with three other officers, the lady that shot Piper from the roof of her car.
My first ever _Charmed_ episode 🙏🏻 I have loved the show ever 🥺
#Godspeed, Shannen, and we thank you 💗
So incredible that she was able to direct herself to this quality. Just think of what she might have accomplished as a director
Oh that is a dark theory :O
That’s what I tell myself… that her death was PERMANENT because of her actions
Shannon directed some of my fave eps. What a talent!
Shannen acted her fucking ass off in this episode, especially the final 15 minutes. The moment Piper gets shot, it's an emotional roller coaster and she pulls it off in spades.
Pipers “death” had me torn tf up
same that entire scene makes me cry everytime:(
Shannen not knowing that this would be her last episode hits differently watching it.
Aha I can't even imagine
Love your Charmed videos, it's a show that needs more content here on You Tube. Keep 'em coming!

Love this flash-back to 2001. It was a GREAT episode! I forgot that Shannon D. directed it herself. Prue was my FAV character, I loved her. I was crushed to see her go...but she went out SO WELL! Thank you for this walk down memory lane. XOXO

No Shannen, no charmed. I was so sad when she left the show. One of Hollywood finest actresses. The way Shannen delivered till the end. Outstanding!
Too bad the show lasted for 5 more seasons. LOL
@@BooneEricawent downhill after Shannen left
This was just a great Anatomy of an Episode installment. I never thought about how the episode was a deconstruction of Prue, but watching her unravel was so fascinating.
The idea only came to me ten years ago or so and it stayed with me ever since
This gets emotional! This episode has hunted me for years.
Wow, what an amazing review!!!
Thank you!
These last episodes really broke my heart such a wonderful actress it's a shame she ever left the show and they should have made something for her days come back as a spirit or angel I just really enjoyed her work. Shannen Doherty is a wonderful actress and she really put a lot of life into her work!
New Charmed video ruclips.net/video/2Z8eKoepL1A/видео.html
I'm watching All Hell Breaks Loose right now, and Prue, using her powers to move the innocents out of the way, was a smart decision, because she was trying to save her sister, and the innocents were being assholes.
R.I.P. Shannen D.
R.I.P Shannen! You Were A Legend and an Icon! ❤🙏🏽
I'm still annoyed that Prue was killed off. Sue me.. I took it personally
Same here.
Zzz me too I didn’t watch it after she left it just wasn’t the same
There is so much to this episode and Prue this season.
Very well said!
RIP Shannen Doherty
Goddamn sad
human killing piper was so sad and upsetting
11:13 you sir are a menace 🤦🏾♂️🤣😂
Can't say I blame her tho. Homegirl is like this is my last day. Lemme give em something they will remember lol
Basically like her own personal version of The Purge lol
I love that fact that, instead of the trope of a character snapping, due to a minor inconvenience after so many things go wrong, Prue is made to snap when Piper is shot by a crazy woman.
And even then it's a desperation move when the crowds literally won't get out of the way to let her drive Piper to the hospital.
My Favorite Show
I just ran into this channel. Love it!! Please keep it coming❤
OMG IM FIRST, and yess MORE CHARMED CONTENT
Your wish is my command lol
The Hospital scene with Piper's death almost doesn't feel like a Charmed moment with that kind of intensity.
Shannen put her heart and soul into that sequence in fron and behind the camera. It was unbelievable.
Piper (Holly) was particularly beautiful in this episode. Ifk, if it's because of the hairstyle, makeup or the mauve shirt , or a mix
Gotta say, love the episode just wish they had followed things up a bit more clearly. As a young child growing up with this show I was extremely confused when I ended season 3 and started season 5 box set…
Ah yes that'd be a confusing transition lol
I don't like the season where Kaley Cuoco comes on. It's the worse season. And they already went out a limb with the 4th sister Paige. But we love Paige and she was success and it was a right fit. When Penny came in that's when my interest waned. There was a disconnect. Not with rose McGowan character though
i never realised that the passing of prue kinda splits the show between the 20th and the 21st century (she passed in late 2001 and centuries technically start on the '01 years)
Growing up with the show it never clicked that this was prue's last (charmed again didn't air that much when i grew up and the mourning theme of season 4 went under my radar) so i never grasped the finale-ness of this episode but it always felt like an epic and one of the most memorable ones, i think it's that first one i remember watching (not the first i saw, but the first i remember)
That makes much more sense, rather than having a new power doing the job for her while she's like "I didn't mean to do that, but lucky me"
One of my favorite episodes...O.G. charmed had some of the best villains in TV history and some of the more interesting characters
Well said 🙂
This episode was when I felt the most connected to Prue. With out her guise on. She acts in a way I would. I love my family. Nothing would stop me from protecting. In the emotional flurry that is near death. I would probably do the same things she did there.
i am so desperate for a Buffy video
I have part of a draft written for one on The Wish episode (my favourite one) :)
@@BetterWithBob me too because it brings Anya, one of my favourite characters back
I would’ve loved to see Prue descend into Madness after Season 3 😈
Watching her take on The Government, The Source (4 payback) & whoever else got In her way not to mention finding out about Paige It could’ve been ICONIC 🎊🥳🎉
This episode is definitely one of the best in the series shannon did a great job directing the episode I was shocked watching the ending it was a great sendoff for pure
The amount of furniture that had to be replaced every episode though… there credit had to be A1
OKAY! it reminds me of the time Piper froze a demon before he crashed into the grandfather clock and she's like "we can't keep replacing that thing" that would a been me everytime lol.
Great points. I never realized how impulsive Prudence was.
"Barbara makes you cry" - Piper... one of the little things that makes you think they grew up together and know each other...
I love this episode because at this point, it hadn’t been decided on which sister would die, also I feel
That this episode was supposed to have lead to a larger arc, we know that the Cole arc was changed completely in season 5
I also felt that Prue was on the onset of a larger arc in season 4, and we see some of this with Paige in season 4.
Shannen is a fantastic actress as is Holly as Piper, they’re the best actresses on the show in my opinion.
Gotta wonder why the Cleaners didn't get involved in this? They've been assigned to the Charmed Ones since the beginning, correct?
Oh yes, the best episode of Charmed. Shannen did an amazing job. 🖤
New Charmed video ruclips.net/video/2Z8eKoepL1A/видео.html
Prue going full Carrie will forever be epic!
May have written a scene for myself to perform not so subtly inspired by that 😉
it would be amazing to see some back stage footage from the making of this episode, I think this is the best episode ever, (except for it being Shannen's last episode of course).
This is my favorite episode. I always watch it back to back with season 4 premier.
Damn.... my first heartbreak :( I was in seventh grade then.
RIP.
charmed was so amazing charmed videos are great two
I feel like people forget that when Leo comes to heal Piper and Prue after time resets, he’s probably emotional from seeing Piper dead/by the time he gets there it’s possible Prue is already gone, but like his emotions and the knowledge he has of what happens I’m sure affected his actions.
JESUS CHRIST BOB! Jumpscare much? I was not prepared for that snap.
Great observation about this last episode of Prue being all about her "mask" being taken off.
She went the whole show being the one in control, the responsible one, the cerebral one, etc.
This episode, she went into survival mode with IDGAF energy - it was all about protecting her sisters.
People can go on and say she was obsessed with killing demons, but one thing can never be taken away, and that was she was a true big sister.
But no, they just watched😢theyre evil
Part 2 of this episode please🙏🙏🙏
There is no second part. Unless you mean the Charmed Again two parter that opens Season 4
@13:33: Even as a 12 year old, I thought this should have been the last scene ever of the show. It would have given charmed even more of a cultstatus.
4:34 so it's basically the same reason that some vampires are pissed at Dracula in a few stories because his book let's slip how vampires are killed.
Every episode Shannon directed was *chefs choice*
this wasnt the first time she used her powers on innocents, in chick flick she did in the movie theater. i also dont see any fatalities in the scene where she used her powers in the driveway
This really is the best episode of the series. The complete deconstruction of Prue Halliwell should be taught in colleges. You explained it so beautifully.
If Charmed ever got taught in colleges I would die happy lol. Thank you for watching :)
All out prue is amazing. And would not know he directed her own end, thats fantastic. And seeing her break, what a way to go.
Lmao at that Point they were not innocents 😂
My mother loved Charmed, followed this show with her shit got me into it. I remember watching this as a kid and being shooooook! I was big sad! Great ep!
There is a long standing rumor this was a two part episode, but was hastily re-edited when Shannon was abruptly fired. Please help! And why was there no updated promos of the cast for seaSon 3? Please help!
I've read a supposed script for a death scene and I doubt it's legit. I feel as though it would have surfaced by now if it were true.
Shannen Doherty said in one of the comic-cons where she assisted that she would’ve changed her way of dead.
This is my favorite Charmed episode.
You're definitely not alone in that department ;)
i just thought about it, why did the sisters go through all this trouble helping the doctor from Shacks(spelling?) when he couldn't save Piper?
Where where the cleaners in this. There are lot of rumours that there a part 2 of hell breaks lose where we see Prue die
I do actually have a headcanon that explains why they wouldn't have intervened:
They have to stay neutral and the only way to erase the exposure risk would be to erase Prue and Piper...which would shift the balance of power to Evil.
