  • St. Lawrence Seaway workers are on strike.
The seaway links the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes through a system of 15 locks between Lake Erie and Montreal.
The locks close to me are the ones located on the Welland Canal here in the Niagara Region.
This canal links Lake Ontario to Lake Erie.
Join me as I venture out on to lake Erie to see some of these stranded ships close up.

That is a really nice compliment, many thanks. I take pride in this sort of video making. but it's not something i can do frequently, unless more things like this happen close to the Region i live in. I'll be looking to do more this year.

Most people are ignorant of the impact that shipping has on our economy. They're about to find out. God bless those who put out to sea 🌹⚓

Keep me updated. If you come to RI I will certainly be your tour guide on Narragansett Bay and beyond. I could give you recommendations on where to stay, put-in, etc... Have a great winter and safe travels the rest of the way if you go out more this year. Love your videos!

Awesome video! It must have been great being out there among all those big ships. I always thought it would be a great experience to work on one of those Great Lakes Frieghters. The Lake Erie water looked beautiful that day!

It was nice being out there, a little choppy but the water was still quite warm.
There is something about Ships and Planes that I like getting close too

Hopefully they won't take too long to air this out! It will be a disaster if they end up trapped over winter. I remember well the night the boat collided with the lift bridge in Port Robinson. That was disruptive enough!

As of today I heard the strike is over. Thank you for doing this video. A little scary being on the water looking up at them. It was sad seeing the Joseph Thompson the barge being dismantled. The lower lakes ship had a fire that’s why unfortunately she’s there. Happy Halloween 🎃

I was at a Jordan beach this morning checking out the 15 or so anchored off the top of the canal. Bizarre... so Vancouver-like. Also passed a couple of picket lines and honked in support.

You wouldn't expect to see ships getting scrapped in Canada when it's so much easier to change the flag of convenience and send them to India to be broken up.

I see these on the "boat watch" app in real time. It's always curious to me as I grew up on Lake Erie. As far as the Dutch ship, I got to talk to a fellow radio amateur who was on the HAPPY DYNAMIC (not in Lake Erie, but in the Atlantic) several years ago from my home which is now in Central Ohio, and I think that the same company might own both of these ships? I wonder how many radio amateurs might be on those ships in Lake Erie? I hold all of the commercial radio licenses as well, GMDSS (satellite), Telegraph, Radar Endorsement , but alas I went down a different career path. Perhaps monitoring the Lake Erie maritime radio traffic might be of interest to you or others in these pursuits, both with the "boat watch" app and online, and by radio. I think that they primarily use VHF on the Lakes, and maybe some HF too. Or? In these modern days, satellite to talk to their companies . All the Best! 73 DE W8LV BILL

Nah, they want to work, but for increased pay and under better conditions. Collective bargaining is OK as long as the union doesn't go off the rails into political advocacy beyond its purpose.
