MY FIRST TIME AT THIS LOCK - MV GREENWING
An unplanned stop at Lock 3, my first time filming from here and do you know what? it was a great location.
Join me as I film the MV Greenwing as she enters Lock 3 on her downbound journey on the Welland Canal towards Lake Ontario.
An absolutely fascinating location that is part of the Welland Canal Museum.

RIDING NEXT TO ONEGO NEVA
Просмотров 57912 часов назад
Back in October of 2024, Onega Neva passed through Port Colborne. She was quite a neat and tidy looking vessel, nearly a third of the size of most of the Salties (Ocean going ships) that pass through. I just managed to catch up with the ship as she entered Port Colborne off Lake Erie. Enjoy the video, includes drone footage. Onego Neva: Built in 2008 by Yichang Shipyard in Yichang, China. It sa...

New for 2024. Algoma Bear, the Equinox 2.0 Class entered service on the Great Lakes in late Spring having made her long voyage over from China via the Panama Canal. Having been following it since the turn of the new year via Marine Traffic, I had still not been able to catch up with it as it passed through the Welland canal, mainly due to the fact it was either late at night or I was at work. I decided to stay close to home for a video. Riding out to Port Colborne from Crystal Beach and on the way back I stay close to the shoreline. This area is great for any Jetski (PWC) rider to explore, but be careful, there is a lot of shallow areas. On this video, I will highlight some of those areas to keep in mind.

SHIPS! POLSTEAM DABIE ON THE ST LAWRENCE
@Lake Erie Vlogger will you catch the cuyahoga if she comes to Port Colburn to the breakers?
The locks are so amazing and it's crazy how long they have been in operation. Lock 3 is a great viewing location, I can't believe this was your first time there for a video. The time lapse was great, can't wait to see the museum. Thanks for sharing!
Enjoyed your video very much! Thank you!
No free alcohol on an Irish airline??? Seems almost blasphemous.
Great video and I too had no clue there was a viewing area behind the museum. Driven past it many times always say we have to visit museum but we haven’t so far. Definitely stopping now. Thks so much Nigel
Another great perspective video. A timelapse at night watching a ship go through would be amazing. The peace and quiet with just the subtle noise of the ship. It's good to see the crew interact with the people watching, I am going to have to go and check it out next spring or summer when I am in st kitts for the day.
My wife and I love going there to watch the ships pass through the locks. BTW, currently eight ships anchored out north of the canal. Quite a sight to see.
Another well done video! Thank you! I enjoy these so much. Like you, didn't know there was a viewing area, I assumed all of that was restricted, too close to the ships and all.
What’s your license plate say? we can’t figure it out. Thanks ( saw you on the QEW lol)
In Dec. 1939 the German pocket battleship Graf Spe sought refuge in Montevideo, Uruguay. Three British cruisers waited outside. The captain scuttled his ship rather than surrender. Known as the Battle of the River Plate. There's even a movie made about it.
@@John-dm2ik Hi John. I will watch the movie soon. Not of German descent but I admire their intelligence and contribution to world history from cars to our landing on the moon. We brought over 100 prisoners to Alabama who were engineers and their talent and ours put us on the moon in the 60s. The Apollo program was the result. Jack
It’s too bad about the typical Canadian government’s overreaction with regard to security in cases where it’s unwarranted (ridiculous 8 foot iron bars 5 inches apart)And where it’s really necessary…there’s nothing.
Now that was a great video
My favorite part about the Welland Canal is the fact that you can literally get right up close and personal with the ships and crew. Don't worry, chat will fundraise your bail to get you out of the Welland Canal jail lol.
New to your trips improves my geographic knowledge and living in Albany NY near the canal often witness these barges now I have been a guest. Your presentation was professional including your voiceover. Jack
Welcome to the neighborhood ! I've lived near this area for most of my life, and it's one of my favourite spots.
Lock 3 is a great place to watch the ships go through , the three yellow things on the top of the lock wall on opposite side are electro magnets , designed to hold ship in place First tried on lock 8 , where they were ripped right out of the wall , back to the drawing board lol
I was told it was told those things worked by suction, not magnets.
You were right , auto mooring system , many years ago I worked at lock eight and was told by someone who should have known it was magnetic , I stand corrected @@John-dm2ik
@@John-dm2ik Correct, they're basically huge suction cups. They hold the ship in place via vacuum
Great to see you are still filming !
Another great video, i have been at lock 3 many times and had picnics there
Awesome capture from the drone with the Pilot boat passing, always a treat to see Port Colburne.
The port here is a great viewing area. I could sit down there for hours.
Thks for video. Yes we had an amazing fall n so far the cold n snow is holding off.
I think we will see our firth snow tonight. If the winds are light on Friday, I'll try and get some video over at Hamilton
Paints not making them money and when you owned by creditors they only care about making as much as they can.
Thanks for sharing your experience with me Scott on the west coast I really feel like I am watching from your perspective Have a great day today
Thanks Scott, I can't wait until April 2025 for when i can get back out on the water. My seadoo is being winterized Friday. I have plans for next spring.
Nice video ❤❤❤
Slow that down a bit- was that Justin Trudeau dancing on the bow?😮
Back somewhere around 2008, winter, I helped install the hydraulic pressure lines that open and close the big gates and spill ways underneath all that concrete. It was pretty neat to see the working mechanisms behind the operation of the locks. Cool time-lapse 👍
I also question the forward smoke stack story. That would mean the exhaust would have to be piped forward about 700 feet from the engine room to the bow, and that seems inefficient, possibly dangerous and isn't logical. The reason given is that the stack at the rear interferes with the unloading gear, but the Spruceglen isn't a self-unloader. Also, having the smoke discharge at the rear would get into the crew quarters, and that doesn't make sense either. When underway the exhaust blows away off the stern and is not a problem for the crew. The small exhaust pipe on the bow is for the generator for the bow thrusters as mentioned here is a much more logical explanation. I'd question where you got that information Nigel.
What you just saw is a mirror image of CSL Birchglen Spruceglen is her sister ship
Can you provide a little more explanation about the forward smoke stack? It seems a little strange to pipe exhaust from the engines at the stern all the way to the bow. Also, your video showed smoke coming out of the conventional stack at the rear of the vessel especially as it accelerated out into Lake Erie. I still thoroughly enjoyed the video! Thanks.
Hi John, I had to do some digging to find out about the forward smoke funnel / stack. I could not find any information specifically to this particular vessel. Though i did find this.. "Bulk carriers like the CSL Whitefish are equipped with conveyor belts and unloading booms that often extend from the stern. Positioning the funnel forward keeps the exhaust system away from this equipment, reducing interference and the risk of soot contamination during unloading operations. A forward funnel reduces the chance of exhaust smoke obstructing visibility from the bridge, which is often located near the stern or midship. This is particularly important during operations in confined waterways, ports, or near other vessels. Positioning the funnel at the bow keeps exhaust emissions away from crew accommodation areas, typically located at the stern. This improves air quality and overall habitability for the crew. This design is typical for many vessels in the CSL Group's fleet and other similar self-unloading carriers, prioritizing efficiency, safety, and operational performance." Now what would be nice is if a crew member from CSL could answer this.
I thought the smoke stack on the bow was for the diesel engine that ran the generator that supplied the power for the electric bow thrusters ,is that what you ment or did i miss that. great video.
I thought it was a lookout 🤷🏼♂️ great footage either way!!
thats what i thought
This looks like a blast, friend! Sure enjoyed the ride, and also just watched your trip up the Niagara river - thanks for sharing...
❤️
After the canal was widened and deepened, barges were towed by motor vessels so towpaths for mules were no longer needed.
I am fascinated by these locks, thanks.
I love my brother,a great guy on all accounts ,but he has always struggled with operating equipment of all kinds. But hes done extremely well for himself so he decided to buy a 21 foot $120,000 scarab jet boat last summer. Beautiful custom. Great times on the inland lakes. But he and the wife thought it would be a good idea to go out on lake Erie. Started ok , weather picked up. They made it in alright but bri was shook up!! That pretty boat will never see a Great lake again. Gotta respect the big waters.
What Garmin do you use
Very nice. You are spot on about exploring in a Sea Doo. Took my Sea Doo in to be winterized this week. My first ride was on April 15th. Good season here in Rhode Island. Thanks for sharing.
YOU SHOULD TRY SEEING HOW CLOSE YOU CAN GET TO THE EDGE OF THE HORSESHOE FALLS WITHOUT GOING OVER.
THAT LOOKS LIKE SO MUCH FUN NIGEL. HAVE YOU EVER TRIED IT WHEN ITS HAILING ? THANKS FOR SHARING DUDE.
No, but that heavy rain hurt, I could only imagine how the hail would feel. Since this was filmed, I now have a crash helmet on standby
Thks again wow she sure is scuffed up. Definitely needs a little paint Liked the picture you took of her in the lock
I always enjoy your videos very much, even though you had mic challenges. I especially enjoyed the bow shot in the lock! Thank you for all your hard work!
Always enjoy another "Welland Canal Specialitst" production. You can really see where all the scuff marks come from on the ships when you see how narrow the locks are from ship level. Did notice on the closeups the Plimsoll markings were in feet. Usually, the Canadian vessels are in meters or some have both on their scales. Always interesting finds in your vids.
For a fifty-year-old girl, they should give her a break and give her a respray. She has been such a workhorse. Great video! Loved the shot of going into the lock and grabbing that picture. Where she is slowly coming out of the lock is a wonderful scene! Thank you for sharing this with us!
Last month the Robert S Pierson lost its rudder on Lake Superior shortly after departing the Algoma steel mill at the Soo. It was towed to a repair facility in Superior, WI. Repair didn't take long.
Over all shipping tonnage on the great lakes is down from last yr, and i have heard that a few companies are putting their less used ships into early winter layup.
At Lock 7 the other day there was a post on the wall showing last months figures. Everything was down except oil and chemical. Interesting for sure
Another great video Nigel . I love the Welland canal . Grew up beside it and spent many years in construction working on the canal . Mostly in the winter when it was closed . It is the coldest place on earth in the winter lol brrrrr . I know it intemitly from lock one to eight . FYI , locks one , two , and three have hydro electric power generating stations . Built roughly fifteen years ago . Located at the south east side at the overflow gates , one of your drone shots show it , small building built from the water up the wall . I live in the beach and maybe one day I will run into you and we can chat about all my bone chilling experiences , got some cool picks too , have an awesome day Nigel 👍
That would be great. Coffee?
@@NigelHayI will get together any pics I can find and will be in touch in the near future , you should see the locks when there empty , walking under those gates is something

Lake Erie is known to be The Quickest to rouse in a Storm, all because it’s the shallowest lake.
The poor baby needs some TLC.
The price difference between the 170 and the 325 Ltd is only about $5k (USD). Isn’t it worth it to just get the 325 and then you’ll never wonder how fast it could have gone? Or is the 325 just dumb overkill for a middle-aged man who is just going out for leisure runs?
The 170 is excellent I don't need bells and whistles and 325hp.
I so miss snow. We moved to Georgia for my late husbands job and Im now kinda stuck here. So this video is wonderful cause I can see water and snow!!! Thank you.
When I first got started ship watching just a few years ago, I couldn't figure out why the Canadian ship had such paint scrapes all over them. Having never seen any video of Welland Canal, it confused me. Now I COMPLETELY understand! Those are some very close quarters 😊
There is very little room on either side of the ship, If you are in the area, have you checked out Lock 3 and the viewing area at the museum?
@@NigelHay I have not, I haven't visited Canada since my wedding, over 30 years ago. It looks as though we need to make that trip.
