- New for 2024. Algoma Bear, the Equinox 2.0 Class entered service on the Great Lakes in late Spring having made her long voyage over from China via the Panama Canal.
Having been following it since the turn of the new year via Marine Traffic, I had still not been able to catch up with it as it passed through the Welland canal, mainly due to the fact it was either late at night or I was at work.
Funny thing is, I nearly missed it again today as it was Rememberance Day as the Bear entered Port Colborne just after 11am.
Anyway, this is Algoma Bear exiting lock 8 heading downbound.

Great video.
Thanks for posting this video. Enjoyed watching.
Another great video, yes a windy and cool day at the cenotaph . great turn out today.
Hi Nigel. I was one of her followers from China eagerly awaiting her arrival. The downside was, I knew once she arrived, Algoma Transport was going to the recycle yard. It surprised me how big she actually is tho. Have fun pet xx
Pet? You must be English. The Transport was a side sight over the past 10 months.
She's a beaut.
I got to see the Bear 🐻 this summer at Sault Ste Marie in July
Oh! That bear. Good one 😂
yes she is at the max size for the canal which i believe is 80' wide and 745' long
For years the standard length and breadth of Canadian Canal vessels was 730' long and 75' beam. They were called "730's." Exceptions had been made to allow wider vessels a one-way transit to the upper lakes. The lock width is 80'. I think the standards have been relaxed nowadays.
It’s sad knowing she replaced the Algoma Transport 😢
Doesn't take long to scratch up the sides. Does anyone know why ships transiting the Welland appear to deliberately scrape along the dock wall and lock side when maneuvering? I don't think this is the case for all large locks the world over, even ones with very tight clearances. Cheers!
It allows them to enter the lock without banging back and forth damaging the walls and the ship.It also makes it more efficient and speeds up the process of transiting the canal which takes approximately 9 hours
While you are there, check out a satellite view of Lakeveiw Cemetery, they have to move bodies to an identically laid out area to expand the Welland lock 7.
Now I have to go back there and get the drone over it. very interesting. Is this process happening now or was it already done in the past?
They do not discharge ballast from the anchor pocket
