The surprising power of Ground Vehicles in Star Citizen
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 авг 2024
- So do ground vehicles suck? I hear a lot of people call ground vehicles useless or a cash grab, but I wanted to put them to the test - particularly with the arrival of the new Anvil Centurion - and look at what uses we could find for them.

---August 2022 Giveaway Rules------------------------------------------------------------------
Due to the support the community has given me I'd like to give something back, so we're doing a monthly ship giveaway. This month (August 2022) will be an Origin 315p with LTI.
- The ship is a standalone item for the game Star Citizen. It does not include a game package and you will need one to play the game. The recipient will require a Star Citizen account to claim the gift which will be sent to the winner via email.
- To enter you simply need to comment on any video released during August 2022 on the channel before the competition closes at Midnight (UTC) on 31st August. You can enter multiple times by commenting on multiple videos but only one entry will be counted per video.
- A random number generator will be used to select which video the winner is drawn from, then used again to select a winner from the list of unique commenters.
- The prize is an Origin 315p - there is no guarantee that if you seek to exchange it with CIG (the games developer) for store credit that this will be equal to the list price of the ship.
- There is no alternative to the prize.
- Once notified you have 3 months to claim your prize. If you don't claim it it will be returned to the prize pool.

I've got to say, attacking Jumptown with some friends only using ground vehicles is a blast. Using Cyclones brings me back to storming the beaches of the Silent Cartographer from C.E., buzzing around jumptown blasting machine guns to mow down infantry and using ballsistas, cyclones, and tanks to take out ships.
Nice- totally agree, the ground game feels really good and does have its advantages. Their just often overlooked because of the inconvenience.
@@LoudGuns I think the inconvenience is mainly due to the way they're spawned in. Right now, you have to fly to a location with a ground vehicle spawner, then run out, spawn the vehicles, and then manually load them yourself, all before you can head out to your destination. It's a lot of extra time and work when you could alternatively just take a ship directly to your destination.
But CIG have said that eventually we'll be able to spawn ground vehicles directly into your ship from the hangar terminal. I think once that's implemented, we're going to see a lot more ground vehicles in use.
@@bobL761 yeah that will definitely make the whole process much smoother - what you don’t always see in these vids is the behind the scenes of people doing all the logistics to make the events happen and that really is a throttle on us at the moment.
I hope they make planetary shield generators. So you can have bases and outposts where there is an actual shield protecting the base from bombing and ship weapons. Then you would either have to conduct a prolonged bombardment of the base to wear down the shield, or you would need ground attack options. Dropships could get soldiers in quick to disable the shield, or you could drop off ground vehicles further away to invade the base if the anti-air is too spicy for dropships.
remember reach from halo? they did that
Planetside had base shields somewhat like this, if I recall. Made for very fun infiltrator gameplay.
I agree ground vehicles have a rock solid place in the future - in 2021 cgi said they are planning areas you can't get to by ship because of weather or AA, that means you either go on foot or in a vehicle, and with physicalized inventory hitting eventually you won't be able to carry much on foot :p
Yeah that’d be amazing - I even love non-combat vehicles like the ursa rover, but we just need the game reasons to use that sort of thing. Good shout on the weight issues as well!
They need cave missions where you drive an ursa into to rescue and npc or retrieve something. That would be soo cool. Maybe have it a couple miles long or kms whatever and man....really neat shit....or maybe the skys are too hectic too much wind or lightning and storming and you have to set down to get to where you need to go. This game has so much potential to be beyond special. I really want it to get there.
That was a hell of a lot of fun to be part of the making of the video and getting some clips in it.
One of my favourite events to date - was so fun! And thank you for the crispy clips!!
This is my favorite type of video of yours, examining the gameplay possibilities within Star Citizen. I saw a lot of complaints about the Centurion being "useless" when it was revealed, and I just couldn't wrap my head around it. The thing is essentially a stealth hammerhead turret on wheels, and it doesn't have the ammo limitations of the ballista or other AA ground vehicles.
I used to love playing anti-air units back in my Planetside 2 days, and one thing I learned from that time is that good AA units are exponential force multipliers. A single AA MAX or Lightning Tank on its own isn't going to make a huge difference on the battlefield. But spread just a few of them out properly, and you can completely lock down the airspace around any ground facility, no matter how many aircraft the enemy throws at you. I imagine the Centurion will fill a similar role once we have more scenarios where ground bases are under siege.
Yeah i think the cost aspect could be big, having a vehicle take out a ship costing maybe 100x that is huge even if a few ground forces fall in the process. I also see myself just on AA shift at some outpost feel like it could be fun. Anyway great vid!
Damn didn’t even really think of that, but in the future where there’s a potential cost implication the value of the hardware could be a big deal.
Great vid! love the empire strikes back comparison. Hope Cig sees fit to add a jumptown esque large scale ground assault phase 1 mission. With ariel support coming into play later.
Yeah I’d love to see a mission to assault an installation with massive AA defences, find an IFFI like in siege of Orison, then have the ability to reinforce by air to finish the mission.
I had a mission some time back where I had to collect a package from a pirate outpost on Microtech. I had a few issues, notably that I clipped through the terrain after dealing with the cutlass guarding the area. As it turned out, the outpost was about 40 km outside of New Babbage, so after respawning, I proceeded to grab my Anvil Spartan, and drove through the taiga and over a mountain to the camp. The remaining pirates opened fire as soon as I arrived, but shotguns and assault rifles aren't all that effective against an armored APC. My ballistic gatlings on the other hand were overkill even for their heavy armor troops. Pretty much the first time I used my Spartan in any kind of combat.
that was a great review of the ground vehicles, and that ground combat event was a great idea. I remember folks talking about being able to paint your own ships as a planned feature when I first was getting in to SC, and I would love for that to be implemented. I'd happily shell out for colours I could apply myself similar to warframe, rather than the skin model cig has right now.
Great video. I've fallen in love with the Cyclone AA since it's concept. Ground clearance, agility, countermeasures, emp, missiles... Can't wait to be in a column covering my teammates.
The value for atmospheric bombers will definitely be found in subduing these ground vehicles.
And then when OPFOR has a nice ground-based air defence screen going on, you get some mates, a few Cyclones and a batch of railguns to go all Western Desert 1942. If they give us designators that could be even more fun!
Definitely looking forward to the use of ground vics in the future as org claims occur and sites host more quest locations outside of stations and cities.
As if all the spaceships weren't enough, as a new player it all seems overwhelming at first, thanks for the helpful videos.
Good vid. It would be interesting to see more ground battles with less air impact, especially on the relatively random terrain rather than on sculpted maps like in other games. So not just hold some preselected point by CIG, but players find their own strongholds that other players are forced to attack to take their resources.
Yeah - I think if there were planets in the future with very limited flying zones that could set the scene for some incredible ground battles!
I've always been amazed by the ground vehicles power in this game
Great vid never knew ground vehicle could be so helpful loved the back ground footage really shows how much time and effort you put into your vid’s
Your friendly Citizen,
Gameruler
I haven't used the ground combat vehicles but I've found the golf carts a blast to drive around the various areas.
Love it! Centurion were so fun to use at JT. Really excited to see what they do about making stuff like that more common
One thing I was always a bit sad about was that they didn’t do more with caves. I felt that if some of the caves had a tonne of gems etc they could’ve created organic jumptown sessions.
Thanks for the really fun idea of a vehicle gauntlet run. Going to see if the org I'm in will give that idea a go.
It was a great night - so much laughter as we slayed each other 😆
Very large capital ships or stations could also be a nice event that uses ground vehicles to establish a beachhead inside docking areas. I could also see a use inside larger cave systems that they've already mentioned
My issue with the ROC in particular is I would like to see mouse steering. The Mule seemed a lot better to drive and the Cyclone was okay.
The Cyclone RC drives really well compared to everything else. Completely different handling
They seem to be going in the right direction with ground gameplay. I can only hope that this time next year ground vehicles will be seen as invaluable.
I’d agree, and as long as we get more objective control type missions I think we’ll see that for sure.
I'm excited to see how combined arms play out in this.
I look forward to seeing more variety of ground vehicles or maybe even ships that can be deployed on ground as a fixed sentry platform!
Damn that would be awesome - like a ship that has no weapons until it lands and deploys. Then transforms into an AA platform .
Excited to see how far ground vehicles develop
awsome vid great content and I love the way you set up your videos keep it up!!!
Cheers Zaky!
I do think they have a future.
A PvE use would also be nice. Who wouldn’t enjoy missions to go fight in big tank battles?
Well done on this analysis. I feel that as the game progresses, real world strategy and tactics may over take video game tactics in success rates. Getting server populations large enough to mount full scale offense and defensice postions will be amazing.
Thanks mate! Yeah I’m in the camp of acknowledging the power of bringing real world skills and strategies in but without forgetting it’s a video game at the end of the day and it’s not 100% ever going to function like the real world.
Be interesting to see say 4 land vehicles with say a Dragon fly to scout ahead considering the the most damaging thing was the route chosen to get back
Yeah in a bigger column I’d definitely look to include some outriders. Maybe hover bikes or maybe cyclones which are that bit smaller and more nimble but can still add to the AA capabilities.
I wish my granddad invented Oreo's.
Me too….me too 😔
"Maybe you Grandad created oreos"
ground vehicles have become awesome, my friend and I blew up a npc hammerhead using only 7 rounds. also I am broke so I buy most of my stuff ingame plus it gives me objectives to work towards. :)
I've always bought all the ground vehicles, but I never have a team to deploy them. Also, there should be a resupply module that could fit in the herc so you could reload missiles and ballistics
Enjoyed this. Thank you
what i hope is that SHIPS also carry a LICENCE requirement which you can earn rank by serving as crew for another player on the ship they want to buy in game,
i mean uec is just currency but rep as a currency is far more rewarding cos you earnt it which gives it value. So earning the ablity to pilot a ship might be a good step in the right direction
Will be interesting to see what they do - personally I think something will come along to nerf the massive fleets some people have. Maybe upkeep, but yeah maybe a license system like you suggest.
I think there’s so much room to grow with land vehicles! I’m especially excited for the Ranger bikes!
For sure! The rangers look so so cool!
thx for all these infos!
Valid point on the PTW regards skins. They will be available in game (at some point) though so its not like its a permananent thing. And as everyone says we are in Alpha and those playing and paying are doing so to support the game.
Yeah - I can just easily see a future where CIG switch tack a little and say they’ll make some cosmetic items cash only (to move to a more sustainable funding model). I think this is fine for choosing which Greycat armour you want with some options available in game, but when it becomes pay for a desert camo pattern that provides an advantage I’m less sold.
Armor is going to be an interesting addition to ground vehicles as well. A vehicle on the ground is able to put on a lot of armor easily, what if an Atlas chassis which is rocking more armor than a HH and flat out ignores size 1 and 2 weapons?
For a second I was thinking of a different Atlas... sigh
Yeah- don’t know if you’re into WH40K but damn I would love a baneblade tank 😆
@@vorpalrobot for sure I had to double check, surprised they called them the same.
@@LoudGuns that’d be some multi crew fun.
Very nice good service enjoyed that a lot!
Our JT insurgency is on the record 😆
Ouch, that hurt to watch myself get blown up >.< Great video though Loud :D. GV's are defenityl going to be more of a pain once you cant just hover in atmo with the nose pointed at the GV's
Haha always great to watch yourself to 💥 consider it an out-of-body experience 😂
@@LoudGuns I think this is going to make me develop some sort of complex @_x
I'm sure they'll come into their own at some point. The second you can't get a ship someplace, they're useful. There's a million mechanics you can put in to facilitate that. WHy not expand on this though. Markerlights for infantry to lase targets for your fast air, or for your MLRS (that granted, doesn't yet exist) that you've got squirelled away. Mechanically speaking it's fairly simple to be able to cast a ping to your party when you mark a target.
They need cave missions where you drive an ursa into to rescue and npc or retrieve something. That would be soo cool. Maybe have it a couple miles long or kms whatever and man....really neat shit. This game has so much potential to be beyond special. I really want it to get there.
Good vid as usual. How often does your org get together to do these events? and is there smaller events in scale that happen more often? Im starting to look into joining an org.
We run a lot of events - there’s usually at least 4-5 a week covering various game loops and plenty of pickup groups along the way. We have a no pressure policy so you’re welcome to come and join our community on discord and get involved with events like this without any requirements to sign up to our org.
First time I've seen a set of aril armor that wasn't yellow or blue. Where'd you get it?
Ground combat gameplay definitely needs some work but could be very interesting. Would love to see missions that require a ground attack to take out AA in the future.
Great video Boss! 🙂
Cheers Rasfer!
Great video.
great vid and really showed how ground vehicles can dominate under the right circumstances
Lol @10:38, is it just me or did the pilot get flung when the ship froze?
Thank you, LG 🪐
lol this is the 5 one of your vids that I have watched in a row and they make time fly
Haha thanks Maurice! Glad you’re enjoying them
you've said it all I got nothing to add, great video.
well beside that ballista missile rack should be changeable and allow more customization... allowing you to put s9 missiles or a shitload of s3;
the rack system if kinda inefficient allowing; but well they mainly fixed to specific missile because the state of missile balance isn't there yet.
aren't there already some paint buyable in-game?!,... maybe not for the ballista yet... well imo there is a difference between a Skin and a paint job...
seriously anyone should be able to "customize" there vehicle the color/pattern they want it's just a color/pattarn,
skin would be more liek variante in the structure of the ship (the meshes), differents wing shape, different cockpit shape etc... not a different color... to me that's a means cashgrab for something that would just take 5 minutes to design... changing 2 colors on a ship, don't tell me it took a month to 3 devs to make that work!!!
and selling those 5 to 10$ is insulting to those whos work took month and the produce is sold 50$... and it's as much insulting for the players.
Specially when those paint gonna be released in-game for just few credits...
Yeah personally on the whole skins / cosmetics thing I think they do need to look at games like LoL that do it incredibly well - the skins need to be transformative. Like I want a truly bad ass looking tank with extra decorations, maybe a set of speakers for blasting out led zeppelin, kill markings etc. the colouration / paint should then just be an in game purchase.
Well apparently a a couple squads of rail guns can destroy ships almost instantly oh a liberator or kraken loaded with centurions tones and ballistas would wreck a squadron
Hell, to some extent, there are contexts where objective control is preferable to kills, because it saves resources (missiles, ammunition, meds, respawns, spare parts when they'll bea thing, etc) that then the force still has free to invest.
With that said, I'll try in the coming days to attack a drug lab with the Nova!
Plus, let's be honest: the Inferno *will* be used as an A-10 until it has capital ships to go after.
Yep, if you can control an objective without firing a shot, just by displaying enough force that the other side go “nope” and walk away - that’s the ultimate win.
@@LoudGuns I'm also wondering how rearming ground vehicles will affect things, once kinetic options become available to, say, the Centurion or the Nova
Ive not been bothered with ground stuff as Ive not found the need to use them yet. I like SC because its a Space sim not a driving one LOL but I do like them I just havent had the need.
even though I joined your discord channel I have found it hard to give the time to try and play with you guys as my work shift patterns clash to much .
May be one day
Legion crushing those ships ;)
You know it
But who was sleeping on picket duty at JT? 😆
@@LoudGuns Hush!
@@LoudGuns but who was stabbed in the back at JT? :P
@@EsvaRUclipss I’ve had my out-of-body experience and it was more stabbed in the side…..then nuked by an a2
I do think ground vehicles provide a great opportunity for skirmish that's multi-faceted I.e. orgs going head to head over a location in the sky and ground. Literally like a battle from star wars or something 🤣
Yeah- I’m looking at putting together a big ground battle at some point. Take a battlefield approach of allowing a few ships per group but then a lot more ground vehicles and infantry roles.
Did anyone try an inferno against the cens
I believe one was tried towards the end of the first run with fairly decent results, not a ship that’s in too many in game hangars though!
Whens the next jumptown
They do need some ground shields
Great video overall but on the topic of skins, the current model is antiquated. They could sell different skins that have unique effects or models on the in-game shop but not having in-game customization or at least recolor is truly a big negative for the game.
I'm hopeful they'll rework how this functions but it's more than likely going to remain in the backlog until the main game systems are completed.
Yeah I wanted to steer clear of the hex code drama so I worded that part pretty carefully 😂 my biggest issue right now is when some skins that aren’t available for anything but hard cash are giving a gameplay advantage.
I made a C788 loaded centurion. 100 rounds per gun, but the flak makes an A2 dropping a bomb suicide.
Nice! I was curious about alternative loadouts on the centurion.
I think ground vehicles will have a good space in the future so I am still ok with the efforts they put into them.
I really hope that CIG decides to add some sort of ground vehicle mission, but at the same time I feel like it may be a little difficult to balance. Do you make missions that people can feasibly do in an Ursa, so that the barrier for entry is low (but someone in like a Centurion just rolls over) or do you gear it for a Ballista, Nova, or Centurion and make it impossible for any lesser ground vehicle to survive? Also the matter of how the mission would even work, because if you made it into a reskin of the bounty hunter missions, then that would mean flying to a system, unloading your vehicle, driving to the location, fighting, driving back, loading your vehicle, taking off, and then repeat. It definitely would have to be a mission that has like waves of enemies that pays out money upon the defeat of each wave, with possibly infinite waves. In a situation like that, though, the Nova and Ballista are like immediately useless due to their VERY limited weapons, making the Centurion the only real option.
Honestly it's frustrating to think about the hurdle CIG have placed for themselves in designing a ground-to-ground and air-to-ground combat system that doesn't feel contrived. Right now there's no reason for players to fight each other in ground combat outside of like exhibitions of mechanics like this video or just simply roleplaying.
I think there’s more chance for it in dynamic events. Siege of Orison showed that when they want to they can write off flying ships - just turn the AA up to 11! So if we got an event which took place on a moon and maybe we had to fight our way into an installation / fortress with significant AA at the start that could be amazing. You could make it a sub-objective to disable the AA and allow your team to bring reinforcements in via the air.
I spent the cash to always have the ships and not have to grind to buy them over and over.
I like the ground vehicles, think they are fun, I currently only have the ROC-DS paid since i like it, yes it is bit tedious since you have to leave the drivers seat to mine, but at the same time it is way easier to drive and a lot more stable than the flipping ROC :)
Absolutely - not dissing anyone for what they’ve spent. And if somebody just really loves a ground vehicle it’s none of my business to tell them not to buy it - I feel I just have a small duty to sound a bit of caution where the $ vs UEC value is so out of kilter.
@@LoudGuns Yeah i am by no means a fast grinder of aUEC in game, so buying a mole for real money was a no brainer for me, saving up 5.1m in game will take me months, and will likely lead to burnout, so always having that ship + the Andromeda for hauling is a good start, but sure you can get all of that in game, just convenient to not have to worry about it.
@@BerraLJ honestly my main point on cash buys, and one I want to hammer home in future vids, is I just believe we all (regardless of spend) need to be on the side of good gameplay / balance decisions.
@@LoudGuns I agree.
So you think that CIG should maintain the current strength of AA or nerf it a little?
I think it’s pitched about right - there are big hurdles when it comes to ground in terms of getting the vehicles in place to begin with, and if you want to maintain mobility while you have your guns operational these are taking 2 people to crew.
You might want to recruit some folks who know how to drive into your org.
BUT the ships can see you longgg before you can see them, in your ground vehicle
not any more the shortend the EM range for gound vehicles
Your title was too lowbrow for the quality of your commentary. I almost missed what I consider a very good assessment of Star Citizens overall game direction and good insight on your part.
Never too late to make a change! Ty for the criticism and glad you enjoyed it.
Hey it me!
jt=money
Indeed it does, better still JT= drug money with explosions.
First
Finally made it once. Looking so forward to some world of tonks
🥇 is yours!!!
The tonk sucks for sure cuz there is no armor in game :/ I think a tonk should survive more then just a couple hits by any ship or vehicle gun
Yeah i think they massively increased the tanks hull hp but armour is going to be a game changer for sure.
For real, ground vehicles should be bought in game. Their in game value is much lower than their in cash value. I think most recent ones are bought as LTI tokens, but that's just my thought about them.
Yeah the $ / UEC conversion rates on them are just weak. Unless there’s something I’m missing they don’t make sense other than as LTI tokens.
well... you bring up a lot of great points, and while your test runs show that a group of light and medium fighters will struggle (especially when not properly prepared against AA) to hunt and kill Ballista/Centurions. BUT, the Centurion is terrible for no-fly zones. like completely useless against a half decent pilot. it currently only has an effective range of about 800 meters, a decent pilot can just dump fire missiles, shots ect and not be in danger.
given they (the Centurions) are only good defenses against pilots who can be easily beat anyway... well they dont do much do they?
I guess my main points are that most groups won’t be prepared because too many people write off the ground game. Also I’m not sure where you get 800 meters because like most size 4’s they were pretty effective at 1.5km. Plus I think maybe while you factor in pilot skill you don’t factor in any skill on the ground team - a good ground crew will move regularly so you’re not sure on their position, and while we did trial dumb firing missiles this wasn’t incredibly easy / accurate and the targets are very small so unless you’re dive bombing it’s usually a lost cause - all that time you’re focussed on the ground targets not on what might be coming at you from the sky.
IMO there is zero reason to buy ground or light fighters (maybe one) with real money. I would buy a daily that does a bit of everything, a prospector and a medium cargo (free max, cutty black, or Connie Taurus.). Don't be like some of us and get a damn carrack, 600i, bmm, corsair, etc lol.
man i wanna mess with ground vehicles
Thankfully they’re very cheap in aUEC terms 😆 honestly just grab a cyclone and take it out for a spin on a moon just for the fun.
@@LoudGuns yea i think i only used the roc for a living then got a prospector with some help from lions and zalizar but haven managed to get the game running recently to play with some of the toys + there more fun with friends *looks around* so that would be an issue c:
Do ground vehicles suck, No. Will i ever buy one cash, Also No.
Exactly 😝
Maybe just do a 10min mission before buying a cyclone? . . Sorry but I don't like your cash argument.
Can you point me to my cash argument because I find it very surprising that I ever suggested buying a cyclone for cash? Just timestamp it for me and I’ll check.
@@LoudGuns No, sorry. You didn't suggest buying a cyclone for cash, but you what I got it is that in game vehicles should be way more expensive to justify the store price.
The devs said real money prices do not match the in game prices and are nodtsupposed to.
I still liked the video and the topic was great.
@@LoudGuns The time stamp 2:35 till the end of the "The cash conundrum" part.
@@tomsmarkovs1946 ah all I really said was that all vehicle prices will go up (in the past the devs have guided that all in game prices are way lower than they will be and you should expect them to go up between 4-12x depending on size) but regardless I view ground vehicles (and nearly everything for that matter) on the basis of buying in game.
If anything I would argue that ground vehicle prices should be way way lower- like I’d actually consider buying a cyclone if it was something more appropriate like $5 just for the convenience.
Hercules a2 is a heavy bomber meant for coming afther the aa is taken care off, s10 bombs kinda explain that, also the second loadout of the hercules they still have to put in game is the cluster napalm bombs, not sure if they are napalm but i read that somewhere, they look like a missile rack mounted towards the ground. robertsspaceindustries.com/media/zioo7eevbaffyr/store_slideshow_large/CRUS_Starlifter_Promo_Cluster_SM01_PJ01_Grade-Squashed.jpg
I'm glad to hear ground vehicles enjoy a moderate advantage, and I hope it stays that way.
Yeah, they’re easy to write off because of the lack of mobility, but actually they offer a lot of benefits too.
